Abstract:Wave functions of plane polygonal billiards are investigated. It is demonstrated that they have clear structures (superscars) related with families of classical periodic orbits which do not disappear at large energy.

Abstract:In this paper, we present our work on the integration of existing engineering applications using Grid Services. We address a visual grid framework that provides an integrated development environment for engineering computation applications. Furthermore, we demonstrate bow such services can interact with each other. These interactions enable a level of integration that assists the scientific application architect in leveraging applications running in heterogeneous runtime environments. Our framework is implemented by using the existing infrastructures and middleware, the Globus Toolkit. We test our framework for computation solid mechanics applications that require large data transferring, interactive steering, using of multiple platforms, visualization, and access via a portal with graphic interface.

Abstract:Grid computing technology is a focused field in high performance computing. This paper describes an engineering computation oriented visual grid framework VGrid, which is capable to bridge the gap between currently deployed grid services and the computational applications. Based on the Globus toolkit, and coupled with a client component, a services pool and a server component, VGrid visually performs resource discovery, task schedule, and result processing. VGrid improves the efficiency of utilization of resources by introducing a logical resource concept. VGrid applications of numerical simulations in engineering sciences are demonstrated.

Abstract:Grids, as one implementation of public computing, can be deployed by some middleware to integrate all kinds of resources across institutional boundaries, to tackle complex problems in scientific and engineering computation, data storage, scientific visualization, etc. In this paper, we propose a public computing grid framework built upon the hierarchical combination of two popular middleware products, Globus Toolkit (GT) and Sun Grid Engine (SGE). The communication between them can be conducted by Transfer-queue Over Globus (TOG). We discuss issues related to the deployment and the usage of this kind of hybrid grids. We examine it using serial programs and parallel program codes, and compare it with the grids deployed by only GT or SGE, respectively. The case studies imply that this hybrid grid is suitable for loosely coupled applications with high computational complexity.

Abstract:Grid computing is becoming a new computing infrastructure for large-scale scientific computation and cooperative work. The Globus toolkit is the most popular grid environment and de facto grid standard, and it has adopted OGSA architecture to provide applications with grid service level. This study focuses on the requirement for scientists in engineering computation field and narrows the gap between grid service and the engineering community. The engineering computation architecture supplies the users with a visual application development and deployment environment for engineering computation. The whole is characterized by grid service. At the same time, QoS driven user-centric scheduling, community-based efficient authorization and flexible task management are designed and implemented.

Abstract:Grid infrastructures that have provided wide integrated use of resources are becoming the de-facto computing platform for solving large-scale problems in science, engineering and commerce. In this evolution, desktop grid technologies allow the grid communities to exploit the idle cycles of pervasive desktop PC systems to increase the available computing power. In this paper we present DotGrid, a cross-platform grid software. DotGrid is the first comprehensive desktop grid software utilising Microsoft's .NET Framework in Windows-based environments and MONO .NET in Unix-class operating systems to operate. Using DotGrid services and APIs, grid desktop middleware and applications can be implemented conveniently. We evaluated our DotGrid's performance by implementing a set of grid-based applications.

Abstract:In the recent years, many efforts have been made for the development of the Grid,workflow systems. Currently most Grid workflow systems focus on data analysis function or specific Grid applications, while building large-scale scientific collaborative applications is still not easy for common users. In this paper, requirement of Grid workflow spanning multiple grids was introduced firstly. Then, a highly scalable, more usable Grid workflow framework is proposed. The framework provides abstract components that facilitate Grid-based workflow construction, and can integrate multiple Grids' resources into a single system with an intuitive graphical user interface. Furthermore, a prototype system based on this framework was developed, along with a simple bioinformatics application workflow as a demonstration.

Abstract:This paper proposes a computational grid platform for solving the large-scale power system applications. The platform is based on Globus Toolkit middleware and Grid Way meta-scheduler. It can enable large-scale sharing of computational resources across institutional boundary. This paper first discusses the architecture and each component of the platform, and then the test bed is described. Finally, the test results of probabilistic load flow (PLF) by Monte-Carlo simulation are presented. The test results show that the computational Grid system can provide comparable performance.

Abstract:With the rapid development of science and technology in the information era, science & engineering computation has introduced to the field of high performance computing higher and more demands, namely, super computation capabilities, large quantity of data, over long period of calculation course, etc. The fast growth of grid technologies brings about possibility of resolving the above-mentioned challenges and demands. The paper based on grid technologies, puts forward a solution model to science & engineering computing. The solution addresses key issues of science & engineering computation. Meanwhile, utilizing Globus Toolkit(Release 2.2), one of the major implementations of grid computing, together with other techniques, as middleware, we build a computational grid across LANs in Peking University campus network. Some samples of science & engineering computing running on this grid produce satisfactory results. Application experiences demonstrate its feasibility and practical utility.

Abstract:Grids collect the geographically distributed heterogeneous resources and use their aggregated power to solve large-scale scientific problems. In order to aggregate scientific computing libraries and parallel programming environments, a Grid computing agent is introduced. The agent acts as the middleware of grid computing. It coordinates several parallel programming environments to support the heterogeneous parallel computing and integrates scientific computing libraries to deliver the efficient solution of large problems. The agent consists of four modules: (1) parallel compilation module for compiling, debugging, and distributing codes. (2) parallel execution module for resource scheduling, application program execution and result redirection. (3) scientific computing module as a graphical user interface which is implemented by integrating Matlab and NetSolve [1]. (4) resource management module providing a single system image for the whole system. Based on the agent, a web portal is developed which provides a uniform service entry for end users. This approach improves the system usability significantly.

Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing

Abstract:Computational Grids, coupling geographically distributed resources such as PCs, workstations, clusters, and scientific instruments, have emerged as a next generation computing platform for solving large-scale problems in science, engineering, and commerce. However, application development, resource management, and scheduling in these environments continue to be a complex undertaking. In this article, we discuss our efforts in developing a resource management system for scheduling computations on resources distributed across the world with varying quality of service. Our service-oriented grid computing system called Nimrod-G manages all operations associated with remote execution including resource discovery, trading, scheduling based on economic principles and a user defined quality of service requirement. The Nimrod-G resource broker is implemented by leveraging existing technologies such as Globus, and provides new services that are essential for constructing industrial-strength Grids. We discuss results of preliminary experiments on scheduling some parametric computations using the Nimrod-G resource broker on a world-wide grid testbed that spans five continents.

Abstract:Grid computing is a new arising technology which gets computer from different locations to work together with various data resources. Because of its high capability, Grid has contributed to a plenty of areas. When computing for a special objective, typically a series of algorithms are needed. As conventional algorithm bases were built for just specific areas, a Multifunctional Grid-Algorithm-Base (MGAB) providing a suite of kernel algorithms is proposed in this paper. In this base, each algorithm is deployed as an individual Grid Service. A predefined execution of a sequence of available algorithms/Grid Services is controlled by a workflow engine which serves as a means of orchestration of services composed Into workflows described by the BPEL standard language. Based on the Grid, equipped by an appropriate workflow engine, the sequence of algorithms will be executed easily and fluently. Non-Invasive Glucose Measurement is the first application of the MGAB, which shows that this approach is very efficient. In the future, more and more applications in numerous fields can benefit from the MGAB.

To achieve the performance of applications in the grid environment, careful resource management is needed. Protein alignment analysis, a typical bio-grid computing application, is a computing intensive, data parallel application, which needs data storage resources and large computing resources. This paper proposes an integrated resource management framework for bio-grid computing. We demonstrate that this kind of applications can benefit from resource management framework.

Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing

Abstract:The availability of powerful microprocessors and high-speed networks as commodity components has enabled high performance computing on distributed systems (wide-area cluster computing). In this environment, as the resources are usually distributed geographically at various levels (department, enterprise, or worldwide) there is a great challenge in integrating, coordinating and presenting them as a single resource to the user; thus forming a computational grid. Another challenge comes from the distributed ownership of resources with each resource having its own access policy, cost, and mechanism. The proposed Nimrod/G grid-enabled resource management and scheduling system builds on our earlier work on Nimrod and follows a modular and component-based architecture enabling extensibility, portability, ease of development, and interoperability of independently developed components. It uses the Globus toolkit services and can be easily extended to operate with any other emerging grid middleware services. It focuses on the management and scheduling of computations over dynamic resources scattered geographically across the Internet at department, enterprise, or global level with particular emphasis on developing scheduling schemes based on the concept of computational economy for a real test bed, namely, the Globus testbed (GUSTO).

Abstract:Grid is an infrastructure that involves the integrated and collaborative use of computers, networks, databases and scientific instruments owned and managed by multiple organizations. Grid applications often involve large amounts of data and/or computing resources that require secure resource sharing across organizational boundaries. This makes Grid application management and deployment a complex undertaking. Grid middlewares provide users with seamless computing ability and uniform access to resources in the heterogeneous Grid environment. Several software toolkits and systems have been developed, most of which are results of academic research projects, all over the world. This chapter will focus on four of these middlewares--UNICORE, Globus, Legion and Gridbus. It also presents our implementation of a resource broker for UNICORE as this functionality was not supported in it. A comparison of these systems on the basis of the architecture, implementation model and several other features is included.

Abstract:Molecular Dynamics(MD) is computational study through simulating in detail the interatomic interactions in protein. Currently, there is no better simulating algorithm due to the demand on accuracy. However, a ensemble/distributed dynamics method is developed to run the simulation in parallel on many distributed computers on the internet. The objective of this research is to design and code a reliable framework to run molecular dynamics computing in a distributed environment to make use of the contributed CPU time better and to fasten the computing process of computing. We have sucessfully implemented the framework with Web Service and Java, and have extended this framework transparent to applications for further use on our grid computing environment. The experiments demonstrated that the MD simulation will successfully run on this framework.

Abstract:The main focus of grid is the resource sharing at substrate level. With present existing tool kits, however, great efforts still need to be made to implement resource sharing at higher level, such as publishing grid services on grid substrates. In this paper, we present construction platform for specific computing grid (CPSCG), a system that renders the ease and speediness for users to construct a computing grid. Shared computational resources are wrapped to Web services and exported as grid services with little human labor in CPSCG. Abstract:This paper has implemented the grid version of molecular mechanics calculation.Nowadays almost all the chemistry pro- grams are written in programming language such as FORTRAN,C/C++ and run on local computer.This paper gives a solution to ap- ply JNI technique and Globus Toolkit 4 to encapsulate the molecular mechanics programs then to publish it on Internet.Java and Web Service are used without any change of the calculation kernel.It is a good example that shows how to pert the classical chemistry pro- grams to grid environment.
