Abstract:We explore the class of triples (M, nabla, P) where M is a manifold, nabla is an affine connection in M and P is a G-structure in M. Inside this class there are infinitesimally homogeneous manifolds, characterized by having G-constant curvature, torsion and inner torsion. For each matrix Lie group G subgroup of GL(Rn) there is a class of infinitesimally homogeneous manifolds with structure group G. In this paper we characterize the classes of infinitesimally homogeneous manifolds for some specific values of the structure group G including: identity group, finite groups, diagonal group, special linear group, orthogonal group and unitary group.

Partial AHS-Structures, their Cartan description and partial BGG sequences

Abstract:G-structures and Cartan geometries are two major approaches to the description of geometric structures (in the sense of differential geometry) on manifolds of some fixed dimension $n$. We show that both descriptions naturally extend to the setting of manifolds of dimension $\geq n$ which are endowed with a distinguished involutive distribution $F$ of rank $n$. The resulting ``partial'' structures are most naturally interpreted as smooth families of standard G-structures or Cartan geometries on the leaves of the foliation defined by $F$. We prove that for the special class of AHS-structures (also known as $|1|$-graded parabolic geometries) the construction of a canonical Cartan geometry associated to a G-structure extends to this general setting. As an application, we prove that for partial AHS-structures there is an analog of the machinery of BGG sequences. This constructs sequences of differential operators of arbitrarily high order intrinsic to the structures. Under appropriate flatness conditions, these sequence are fine resolutions of sheaves which locally can be realized as pullbacks of sheaves on local leaf spaces for the foliation defined by $F$.

The Geometry and Superconformal Algebras of String Compactifications with a $G$-structure

Abstract:In this thesis we study string compactifications on manifolds equipped with a $G$-structure, placing a special emphasis on the interplay between geometry and physics. We follow two complementary approaches. In the first part of the thesis we adopt a sigma model perspective and focus on the worldsheet superconformal field theory. We consider compactifications on 7-dimensional Extra Twisted Connected Sum (ETCS) G$_2$ manifolds as well as 8-dimensional Generalized Connected Sum (GCS) Spin(7) manifolds. We find that the geometric construction is reproduced in the worldsheet algebra via a diamond of algebra inclusions. In the second part of the thesis we change gears and consider string compactifications from a supergravity point of view. In particular, we focus on compactifications of the heterotic string down to three spacetime dimensions preserving minimal supersymmetry $\mathcal{N}=1$, which are described by the heterotic G$_2$ system. We construct new families of AdS$_3$ solutions to this system on homogeneous 3-Sasakian manifolds with squashed metrics.

Generalised Spin$^r$ Structures on Homogeneous Spaces

Abstract:Spinorial methods have proven to be a powerful tool to study geometric properties of spin manifolds. Our aim is to continue the spinorial study of manifolds that are not necessarily spin. We introduce and study the notion of $G$-invariance of spin$^r$ structures on a manifold $M$ equipped with an action of a Lie group $G$. For the case when $M$ is a homogeneous $G$-space, we prove a classification result of these invariant structures in terms of the isotropy representation. As an example, we study the invariant spin$^r$ structures for all the homogeneous realisations of the spheres.

Cartan media: geometric continuum mechanics in homogeneous spaces

Abstract:We present a geometric formulation of the mechanics of a field that takes values in a homogeneous space \mathbb{X} on which a Lie group G acts transitively. This generalises the mechanics of Cosserat media where \mathbb{X} is the frame bundle of Euclidean space and G is the special Euclidean group. Kinematics is described by a map from a space-time manifold to the homogeneous space. This map is characterised locally by generalised strains (representing spatial deformations) and generalised velocities (representing temporal motions). These are, respectively, the spatial and temporal components of the Maurer-Cartan one-form in the Lie algebra of G. Cartan's equation of structure provides the fundamental kinematic relationship between generalised strains and velocities. Dynamics is derived from a Lagrange-d'Alembert principle in which generalised stresses and momenta, taking values in the dual Lie algebra of G, are paired, respectively, with generalised strains and velocities. For conservative systems, the dynamics can be expressed completely through a generalised Euler-Poincare action principle. The geometric formulation leads to accurate and efficient structure-preserving integrators for numerical simulations. We provide an unified description of the mechanics of Cosserat solids, surfaces and rods using our formulation. We further show that, with suitable choices of \mathbb{X} and G, a variety of systems in soft condensed matter physics and beyond can be understood as instances of a class of materials we provisionally call Cartan media.

Abstract:This article consists of some loosely related remarks about the geometry of G_2-structures on 7-manifolds and is partly based on old unpublished joint work with two other people: F. Reese Harvey and Steven Altschuler. Much of this work has since been subsumed in the work of Hitchin \cite{MR02m:53070} and Joyce \cite{MR01k:53093}. I am making it available now mainly because of interest expressed by others in seeing these results written up since they do not seem to have all made it into the literature. A formula is derived for the scalar curvature and Ricci curvature of a G_2-structure in terms of its torsion. When the fundamental 3-form of the G_2-structure is closed, this formula implies, in particular, that the scalar curvature of the underlying metric is nonpositive and vanishes if and only if the structure is torsion-free. This version contains some new results on the pinching of Ricci curvature for metrics associated to closed G_2-structures. Some formulae are derived for closed solutions of the Laplacian flow that specify how various related quantities, such as the torsion and the metric, evolve with the flow. These may be useful in studying convergence or long-time existence for given initial data.

On $G_2$ manifolds with cohomogeneity two symmetry

Abstract:We consider $G_2$ manifolds with a cohomogeneity two $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry group. We give a local characterization of these manifolds and we describe the geometry, including regularity and singularity analysis, of cohomogeneity one calibrated submanifolds in them. We apply these results to the manifolds recently constructed by Foscolo--Haskins--Nordström and to the Bryant--Salamon manifold of topology $S^3\times \mathbb{R}^4$. In particular, we describe new large families of complete $\mathbb{T}^2$-invariant associative submanifolds in them.

Higher Geometric Structures on Manifolds and the Gauge Theory of Deligne Cohomology

Abstract:We study smooth higher symmetry groups and moduli $\infty$-stacks of generic higher geometric structures on manifolds. Symmetries are automorphisms which cover non-trivial diffeomorphisms of the base manifold. We construct the smooth higher symmetry group of any geometric structure on $M$ and show that this completely classifies, via a universal property, equivariant structures on the higher geometry. We construct moduli stacks of higher geometric data as $\infty$-categorical quotients by the action of the higher symmetries, extract information about the homotopy types of these moduli $\infty$-stacks, and prove a helpful sufficient criterion for when two such higher moduli stacks are equivalent. In the second part of the paper we study higher $\mathrm{U}(1)$-connections. First, we observe that higher connections come organised into higher groupoids, which further carry affine actions by Baez-Crans-type higher vector spaces. We compute a presentation of the higher gauge actions for $n$-gerbes with $k$-connection, comment on the relation to higher-form symmetries, and present a new String group model. We construct smooth moduli $\infty$-stacks of higher Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell solutions, correcting previous such considerations in the literature, and compute the homotopy groups of several moduli $\infty$-stacks of higher $\mathrm{U}(1)$- connections. Finally, we show that a discrepancy between two approaches to the differential geometry of NSNS supergravity (via generalised and higher geometry, respectively) vanishes at the level of moduli $\infty$-stacks of NSNS supergravity solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply a result of the classification of a compact cohomogeneity one Riemannian manifold with a compact Lie group G to obtain a classification of compact cohomogeneity one locally conformal Kähler manifolds. In particular, we prove that the compact complex manifold is a complex one-dimensional torus bundle over a projective rational homogeneous, or cohomogeneity one manifold except of a class of manifolds with a generalized Hopf surface bundle over a projective rational homogeneous space. Additionally, it is a homogeneous compact complex manifold under the complexification GC of the given compact Lie group G under an extra condition that the related closed one form is cohomologous to zero on the generic G orbit. Moreover, the semi-simple part S of the Lie group action has hypersurface orbits, i.e., it is of cohomogeneity one with respect to the semi-simple Lie group S in that special case.

Abstract:We analyse the geometry of generic Minkowski $\mathcal{N}=1$, $D=4$ flux compactifications in string theory, the default backgrounds for string model building. In M-theory they are the natural string theoretic extensions of $\mathrm{G}_2$ holonomy manifolds. In type II theories, they extend the notion of Calabi--Yau geometry and include the class of flux backgrounds based on generalised complex structures first considered by Graña et al. (GMPT). Using $\mathrm{E}_{7(7)}\times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry we show that these compactifications are characterised by an $\mathrm{SU}(7)\subset\mathrm{E}_{7(7)}$ structure defining an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent space, and with a vanishing moment map, corresponding to the action of the diffeomorphism and gauge symmetries of the theory. The Kähler potential on the space of structures defines a natural extension of Hitchin's $\mathrm{G}_2$ functional. Using this framework we are able to count, for the first time, the massless scalar moduli of GMPT solutions in terms of generalised geometry cohomology groups. It also provides an intriguing new perspective on the existence of $G_{2}$ manifolds, suggesting possible connections to Geometrical Invariant Theory and stability.

Abstract:<p>Heterogeneous-structured materials are a new class of metallic materials that have recently emerged due to development of advanced processing and structural/architectural design techniques. These materials are made of heterogeneous domains having different constitutive behaviors and achieve superior mechanical properties, such as extra strengthening and work hardening, that are not accessible to conventional homogeneous-structured materials. Here we review recent experimental, theoretical and computational studies on microstructures, mechanical properties and deformation behaviors of heterogeneous-structured metals/alloys, highlighting the relationships between structural heterogeneity and mechanical property improvements, as well as some perspectives towards achieving fundamental understanding of plastic deformation based on strain gradient theory.</p>

Abstract:In this work we will classify physically admissible manifold structures by the use of Waldhausen categories. These categories give rise to algebraic K -Theory. Moreover, we will show that a universal K -spectrum is necessary for a physical manifold being admissible. Application to the generalized structure of D -branes are also provided. This might give novel insights in how the manifold structure in String and M -Theory looks like.

On the classification of discrete conformal structures on surfaces

Abstract:Glickenstein \cite{Glickenstein} and Glickenstein-Thomas \cite{GT} introduced the discrete conformal structures on surfaces in an axiomatic approach and studied its classification. In this paper, we give a full classification of the discrete conformal structures on surfaces, which completes Glickenstein-Thomas' classification. As a result, we find some new classes of discrete conformal structures on surfaces, including some of the generalized circle packing metrics introduced by Guo-Luo \cite{GL2}. The relationships between the discrete conformal structures on surfaces and the 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry are also discussed.

Classifying bi-invariant 2-forms on infinite-dimensional Lie groups

Abstract:A bi-invariant differential 2-form on a Lie group G is a highly constrained object, being determined by purely linear data: an Ad-invariant alternating bilinear form on the Lie algebra of G. On a compact connected Lie group these have an known classification, in terms of de Rham cohomology, which is here generalised to arbitrary finite-dimensional Lie groups, at the cost of losing the connection to cohomology. This expanded classification extends further to all Milnor regular infinite-dimensional Lie groups. I give some examples of (structured) diffeomorphism groups to which the result on bi-invariant forms applies. For symplectomorphism and volume-preserving diffeomorphism groups the spaces of bi-invariant 2-forms are finite-dimensional, and related to the de Rham cohomology of the original compact manifold. In the particular case of the infinite-dimensional projective unitary group PU(H) the classification invalidates an assumption made by Mathai and the author about a certain 2-form on this Banach Lie group.

$G_2$ Integrable Point Characterization via Isotropic Spin-3 Chains

Abstract:We investigate the physical properties of $G_2$-symmetric integrable chains with local degrees of freedom in the fundamental representation; given the typical connection between integrability and critical points, we test the model's properties against a hypothesis of conformal-invariant long-distance behavior. Leveraging an embedding between the $G_2$ exceptional Lie algebra and $SU(2)$-symmetric chains with local spin-3 representations, we perform numerical analyses via exact diagonalization (ED) targeted at specific spin sectors, as well as via non-Abelian density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). A basic study of the momentum-resolved ED spectrum suggests the low-energy system is effectively described by a $(G_2)_1$ Wess--Zumino--Witten (WZW) theory, but we find challenges in further numerical characterization of conformal data. The study and control of the phenomenology of this model may have implications for the development of accessible models for Fibonacci anyons.

Abstract:We provide the complete classification of seven-dimensional manifolds endowed with a closed non-parallel G$_2$-structure and admitting a transitive reductive group G of automorphisms. In particular, we show that the center of G is one-dimensional and the manifold is the Riemannian product of a flat factor and a non-compact homogeneous six-dimensional manifold endowed with an invariant strictly symplectic half-flat SU(3)-structure.

Abstract:We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for warped AdS$_2$ solutions of Type II supergravity to preserve ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry, in terms of bispinors. Such solutions generically support an SU$(3)$-structure on their internal manifold M$_8$, which can experience an enhancement to a G$_2$-structure. We perform an SU$(3)$-structure torsion classes analysis and express the fluxes and other physical fields in terms of these, in general. We use our results to derive two new classes of AdS$_2$ solutions. In (massive) Type IIA supergravity we derive an ${\mathcal N}=1$ supersymmetric class for which M$_8$ decomposes as a weak G$_2$-manifold foliated over an interval and which is locally defined in terms of a degree three polynomial. In Type IIB supergravity we find a class of AdS$_2\times\text{S}^2\times\text{CY}_2\times\Sigma_2$ solutions preserving small ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetry, governed by a harmonic function on $\Sigma_2$ and partial differential equations reminiscent of D3-D7-brane configurations.

Abstract:An explicit classification of simply connected compact homogeneous CR manifolds G/L of codimension one, with non-degenerate Levi form, is given. There are three classes of such manifolds: a) the standard CR homogeneous manifolds which are homogeneous S^1-bundles over a flag manifold F, with CR structure induced by an invariant complex structure on F; b) the Morimoto-Nagano spaces, i.e. sphere bundles $S(N)\subset TN$ of a compact rank one symmetric space N = G/H, with the CR structure induced by the natural complex structure of $TN = G^\C/H^\C$; c) the following manifolds: $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_{n-2}$, $SU_p\times SU_q/T^1 \cdot U_{p-2}\cdot U_{q-2}$, $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_{n-4}$, $SO_{10}/T^1\cdot SO_6$, $E_6/T^1\cdot SO_8$; these manifolds admit canonical holomorphic fibrations over a flag manifold (F,J_F) with typical fiber S(S^k), where k = 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9, respectively; the CR structure is determined by the invariant complex structure J_F on F and by an invariant CR structure on the typical fiber, depending on one complex parameter.
