Abstract:We prove a version of the Khinchin–Groshev theorem for Diophantine approximation of matrices subject to a congruence condition. The proof relies on an extension of the Dani correspondence to the quotient by a congruence subgroup. This correspondence together with a multiple ergodic theorem are used to study rational approximations in several congruence classes simultaneously. The result in this part holds in the generality of weighted approximation but is restricted to simple approximation functions.

Abstract:Diophantine approximation is traditionally the study of how well real numbers are approximated by rationals. We propose a model for studying Diophantine approximation in an arbitrary totally bounded metric space where the rationals are replaced with a countable hierarchy of "well‐spread" points, which we refer to as abstract rationals. We prove various Jarník–Besicovitch type dimension bounds and investigate their sharpness.

Abstract:We establish a new connection between metric Diophantine approximation and the parametric geometry of numbers by proving a variational principle facilitating the computation of the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of many sets of interest in Diophantine approximation. In particular, we show that the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the set of singular m×n matrices are both equal to mn(1−1m+n), thus proving a conjecture of Kadyrov, Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss, and Margulis as well as answering a question of Bugeaud, Cheung, and Chevallier. Other applications include computing the dimensions of the sets of points witnessing conjectures of Starkov and Schmidt.

Effective Results in The Metric Theory of Quantitative Diophantine Approximation

Abstract:Many results related to quantitative problems in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation are asymptotic, such as the number of rational solutions to certain inequalities grows with the same rate almost everywhere modulo an asymptotic error term. The error term incorporates an implicit constant that varies from one point to another. This means that applications of these results does not give concrete bounds when applied to, say a finite sum, or when applied to counting the number of solutions up to a finite point for a given inequality. This paper addresses this problem and makes the tools and their results effective, by making the implicit constant explicit outside of an exceptional subset of Lebesgue measure at most $\delta>0$, an arbitrarily small constant chosen in advance. We deduce from this the fully effective results for Schmidt's Theorem, quantitative Koukoulopoulos-Maynard Theorem and quantitative results on $M_{0}$-sets; we also provide effective results regarding statistics of normal numbers and strong law of large numbers.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the probabilistic theory of Diophantine approximation in projective space over a completion of Q. Using the projective metric studied by Bombieri, van der Poorten, and Vaaler we prove the analogue of Khintchine's Theorem in projective space. For finite places and in higher dimension, we are able to completely remove the condition of monotonicity and establish the analogue of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture.

Inhomogeneous Diophantine Approximation on $M_0$-sets

Abstract:We prove new quantitative Schmidt-type theorem for Diophantine approximations with restraint denominators on fractals (more precisely, on $M_0$-sets). Our theorems introduce a sharp balance condition between the growth rate of the sequence of denominators and the decay rate of the Fourier transform of a Rajchman measure. Among the other things, this allows applications to sequences of denominators of polynomial growth. In particular, we infer new inhomogeneous Khintchine-Järnik type theorems with restraint denominators for a broad family of denominator sequences. Furthermore, our results provide non-trivial lower bounds for Hausdorff dimensions of intersections of two sets of inhomogeneously well-approximable numbers with restraint denominators.

Dimension of Diophantine approximation and applications

Abstract:In this paper we construct a new family of sets via Diophantine approximation, in which the classical examples are endpoints. Our first application is on their Hausdorff dimension. We show a recent result of Ren and Wang, known sharp on orthogonal projections in the plane, is also sharp on $A+cB$, $c\in C$, thus completely settle this ABC sum-product problem. Higher dimensional examples are also discussed. In addition to Hausdorff dimension, we also consider Fourier dimension. In particular, now for every $0\leq t\leq s\leq 1$ we have an explicit construction in $\mathbb{R}$ of Hausdorff dimension $s$ and Fourier dimension $t$, together with a measure $\mu$ that captures both dimensions. In the end we provide a perspective of Knapp's example and treat our Diophantine approximation as its analog in $\mathbb{R}$, that naturally leads to the sharpness of Mockenhaupt-Mitsis-Bak-Seeger Fourier restriction theorem. These are alternatives of recent examples due to Fraser-Hambrook-Ryou. In particular, to deal with the non-geometric case we construct measures of "Hausdorff dimension" $a$ and Fourier dimension $b$, even if $a<b$. This clarifies some difference between sets and measures.

Abstract:Let $E\subset [0,1]$ be a set that supports a probability measure $\mu$ with the property that $|\widehat{\mu}(t)|\ll (\log |t|)^{-A}$ for some constant $A>2.$ Let $\mathcal{A}=(q_n)_{n\in \N}$ be a positive, real-valued, lacunary sequence. We present a quantitative inhomogeneous Khintchine-type theorem in which the points of interest are restricted to $E$ and the denominators of the shifted fractions are restricted to $\mathcal{A}.$ Our result improves and extends a previous result in this direction obtained by Pollington-Velani-Zafeiropoulos-Zorin (2022). We also show that the Dirichlet non-improvable set VS well-approximable set is of positive Fourier dimension.

Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Diophantine Approximation in local function fields via Bruhat-Tit trees

Abstract:We use the theory of arithmetic quotients of the Bruhat-Tits tree developed by Serre and others to obtain Dirichlet-style theorems for Diophantine approximation on global function fields. This approach allows us to find sharp values for the constants involved and, occasionally, explicit examples of badly approximable quadratic irrationals. Additionally, we can use this method to easily compute the measure of the set of elements that can be written as the limit of a sequence of ``better than expected'' approximants. All these results can be easily obtained via continued fractions when they are available, so that quotient graphs can be seen as a partial replacement of them when this fails to be the case.

Abstract:We show that if ℒ is a line in the plane containing a badly approximable vector, then almost every point in ℒ does not admit an improvement in Dirichlet's theorem. Our proof relies on a measure classification result for certain measures invariant under a non-abelian two dimensional group on the homogeneous space SL_3(ℝ)/SL_3(ℤ). Using the measure classification theorem, we reprove a result of Shah about planar nondegenerate curves (which are not necessarily analytic), and prove analogous results for the framework of Diophantine approximation with weights. We also show that there are line segments in ℝ^3, which do contain badly approximable points, and for which all points do admit an improvement in Dirichlet's theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach to prove effective results in Diophantine approximation. This approach involves measures of local positivity of divisors combined with Faltings's version of Siegel's lemma instead of a zero estimate such as Dyson's lemma. We then use it to prove an effective theorem on the simultaneous approximation of two algebraic numbers satisfying an algebraic equation with complex coefficients.

Abstract:We extend the parametric geometry of numbers (initiated by Schmidt and Summerer, and deepened by Roy) to Diophantine approximation for systems of $m$ linear forms in $n$ variables, and establish a new connection to the metric theory via a variational principle that computes fractal dimensions of a variety of sets of number-theoretic interest. The proof relies on two novel ingredients: a variant of Schmidt's game capable of computing the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of any set, and the notion of templates, which generalize Roy's rigid systems. In particular, we compute the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the set of singular systems of linear forms and show they are equal, resolving a conjecture of Kadyrov, Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss and Margulis, as well as a question of Bugeaud, Cheung and Chevallier. As a corollary of Dani's correspondence principle, the divergent trajectories of a one-parameter diagonal action on the space of unimodular lattices with exactly two Lyapunov exponents with opposite signs has equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions. Other applications include quantitative strengthenings of theorems due to Cheung and Moshchevitin, which originally resolved conjectures due to Starkov and Schmidt respectively; as well as dimension formulas with respect to the uniform exponent of irrationality for simultaneous and dual approximation in two dimensions, completing partial results due to Baker, Bugeaud, Cheung, Chevallier, Dodson, Laurent and Rynne.

Abstract:We consider improvements of Dirichlet's Theorem on space of matrices $M_{m,n}(R)$. It is shown that for a certain class of fractals $K\subset [0,1]^{mn}\subset M_{m,n}(R)$ of local maximal dimension Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be improved almost everywhere. This is shown using entropy and dynamics on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups.
Proving the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture without GCD graphs

Abstract:We present a novel proof of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture in metric Diophantine approximation. Our proof is heavily motivated by the ideas of Koukoulopoulos-Maynard's breakthrough first argument, but simplifies and strengthens several technical aspects. In particular, we avoid any direct handling of GCD graphs and their `quality'. We also consider the metric quantitative theory of Diophantine approximations, improving the $(\log \Psi(N))^{-C}$ error-term of Aistleitner-Borda and the first named author to $\exp(-(\log \Psi(N))^{\frac{1}{2} - \varepsilon})$.

Abstract:Let $\theta\in\mathbb{R}^d$. We associate three objects to each approximation $(p,q)\in \mathbb{Z}^d\times \mathbb{N}$ of $\theta$: the projection of the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d+1}$ to the hyperplane of the first $d$ coordinates along the approximating vector $(p,q)$; the displacement vector $(p - q\theta)$; and the residue classes of the components of the $(d + 1)$-tuple $(p, q)$ modulo all primes. All of these have been studied in connection with Diophantine approximation problems. We consider the asymptotic distribution of all of these quantities, properly rescaled, as $(p, q)$ ranges over the best approximants and $\epsilon$-approximants of $\theta$, and describe limiting measures on the relevant spaces, which hold for Lebesgue a.e. $\theta$. We also consider a similar problem for vectors $\theta$ whose components, together with 1, span a totally real number field of degree $d+1$. Our technique involve recasting the problem as an equidistribution problem for a cross-section of a one-parameter flow on an adelic space, which is a fibration over the space of $(d + 1)$-dimensional lattices. Our results generalize results of many previous authors, to higher dimensions and to joint equidistribution.

A sharper multivariate Christol's theorem with applications to diagonals and Hadamard products

Abstract:We provide a new proof of the multivariate version of Christol's theorem about algebraic power series with coefficients in finite fields, as well as of its extension to perfect ground fields of positive characteristic obtained independently by Denef and Lipshitz, Sharif and Woodcok, and Harase. Our proof is elementary, effective, and allows for much sharper estimates. We discuss various applications of such estimates, in particular to a problem raised by Deligne concerning the algebraicity degree of reductions modulo $p$ of diagonals of multivariate algebraic power series with integer coefficients.

Abstract:A classical theorem due to Mattila (see \cite{Mat84}; see also \cite{M95}, Chapter 13) says that if $A,B \subset {\Bbb R}^d$ of Hausdorff dimension $s_A, s_B$, respectively, with $s_A+s_B \ge d$, $s_B>\frac{d+1}{2}$ and $dim_{\mathcal H}(A \times B)=s_A+s_B\ge d$, then $$ dim_{\mathcal H}(A \cap (z+B)) \leq s_A+s_B-d$$ for almost every $z \in {\Bbb R}^d$, in the sense of Lebesgue measure. In this paper, we replace the Hausdorff dimension on the left hand side of the first inequality above by the upper Minkowski dimension, replace the Lebesgue measure of the set of translates by a Hausdorff measure on a set of sufficiently large dimension and replace the translation and rotation group by a more general variable coefficient family of transformations. Interesting arithmetic issues arise in the consideration of sharpness examples. These results are partly motivated by those in \cite{EIT11} and \cite{IJL10} where in the former the classical regular value theorem from differential geometry was investigated in a fractal setting and in the latter discrete incidence theory is explored from an analytic standpoint. Fourier Integral Operator bounds and other techniques of harmonic analysis play a crucial role in our investigation. We also consider, in the spirit of the Furstenberg conjecture, inverse problems for intersections by asking how small a dimension of a set can be given that the dimension of its intersections with a suitably well-curved family of manifolds is bounded from below by a given threshold. Finally, we shall discuss applications of our estimates to the problem of estimating the number of solutions of systems of diophantine equations over integers.
