Abstract:The Yangtze River Basin (YRB) experienced an unprecedented heatwave during the midsummer (July and August) of 2022, posing a great threat to human health, the natural environment, and the social economy. Therefore, understanding the causes of this extreme heatwave in the YRB is of scientific and practical importance. The present study finds the anomaly of western Antarctic warming occurred in the spring of 2022, shows a significant correlation with anomalous air temperature over the YRB. Western Antarctic warming induces increased high-latitude sea surface temperature (SST) over the South Atlantic and South Indian Ocean during midsummer, favoring the poleward shift of mid-latitude wave train. In response, the Mascarene High moves poleward, which accounts for southward movements of summer monsoon circulation systems and the ascending branch of Hadley circulation. Those anomalies weaken the Asian-Australian monsoon as well as the New Guinea cross-equatorial flow, further weakening the East Asian monsoon circulation and causing reduced water vapor transported to the YRB. Furthermore, the intensified descending motion of the Hadley circulation promotes the expansion of the middle-level western Pacific subtropical high towards the west and the eastward displacement of the upper-level south Asian high. These atmospheric phenomena are accountable for the unprecedented heatwave experienced in the YRB during the midsummer of 2022.
