Abstract:We prove the existence and uniqueness of local in time strong solutions to the full Ericksen-Leslie system in a bounded domain in R 3 , with strong anchoring boundary condition for the director field.The proof consists of three main steps: first, we introduce a new equivalent formulation of the system, which together with the boundary condition ensures the nonlinear constraint that |n| " 1.Second, based on this new formulation, we establish the well-posedness of the linearized system and show that the nonlinear operator induced by the stress tensor terms is locally Lipschitz continuous.These results together with a fixed point argument lead to the existence of a local in time solution of the new system.Third, the hydrodynamic component of the coupled system can be reformulated as a quasi-stationary Stokes-type equation.Subsequently, we can apply the regularity theory of the generalized Stokes system and employ a bootstrap argument to improve the spatial regularity of the local in time solution.
