Abstract:Vortex rings are remarkably stable structures that occur in a large variety of systems, such as in turbulent gases (where they are at the origin of weather phenomena)<a href="/articles/s41567-020-01057-3#ref-CR1">1</a>, fluids (with implications for biology)<a href="/articles/s41567-020-01057-3#ref-CR2">2</a>, electromagnetic discharges<a href="/articles/s41567-020-01057-3#ref-CR3">3</a> and plasmas<a href="/articles/s41567-020-01057-3#ref-CR4">4</a>. Although vortex rings have also been predicted to exist in ferromagnets<a href="/articles/s41567-020-01057-3#ref-CR5">5</a>, they have not yet been observed. Using X-ray magnetic nanotomography<a href="/articles/s41567-020-01057-3#ref-CR6">6</a>, we imaged three-dimensional structures forming closed vortex loops in a bulk micromagnet. The cross-section of these loops consists of a vortex–antivortex pair and, on the basis of magnetic vorticity (a quantity analogous to hydrodynamic vorticity), we identify these configurations as magnetic vortex rings. Although such structures have been predicted to exist as transient states in exchange ferromagnets<a href="/articles/s41567-020-01057-3#ref-CR5">5</a>, the vortex rings we observe exist as static configurations, and we attribute their stability to the dipolar interaction. In addition, we observe stable vortex loops intersected by point singularities<a href="/articles/s41567-020-01057-3#ref-CR7">7</a> at which the magnetization within the vortex and antivortex cores reverses. We gain insight into the stability of these states through field and thermal equilibration protocols. The observation of stable magnetic vortex rings opens up possibilities for further studies of complex three-dimensional solitons in bulk magnets, enabling the development of applications based on three-dimensional magnetic structures.

Pseudospin Vortex Ring with a Nodal Line in Three Dimensions

Abstract:We present a model of a topological semimetal in three dimensions whose energy spectrum exhibits a nodal line acting as a vortex ring; this in turn is linked by a pseudospin structure akin to that of a smoke ring. Contrary to a Weyl point node spectrum, the vortex ring gives rise to Skyrmionic pseudospin patterns in cuts on both sides of the nodal ring plane; this pattern covers the full Brillouin zone, thus leading to a fully extended chiral Fermi arc and a new, "maximal," anomalous Hall effect in a 3D semimetal. Tuning a model parameter shrinks the vortex ring until it vanishes, giving way to a pair of Weyl nodes of opposite chirality. This establishes a connection between two distinct momentum-space topologies-that of a vortex ring (a circle of singularity) and a monopole-antimonopole pair (two point singularities). We present the model both as a low-energy continuum and a two-band tight-binding lattice model. Its simplicity permits an analytical computation of its Landau level spectrum.

Abstract:In this paper we show that the vortex states can be created not only in magnetically soft "small" (with the dipolar and exchange energy competition) cylindrical dots, but also in magnetically saturated "big" (when the exchange is neglected) cylindrical dots. A property associated with a vortex structure becomes evident from an analysis of confinement phenomena of magnetic oscillations in a ferrite disk with a dominating role of magnetic-dipolar (non-exchange-interaction) spectra. In this case the scalar (magnetostatic-potential) wave functions may have a phase singularity in a center of a dot. A non-zero azimuth component of the flow velocity demonstrates the vortex structure. The vortices are guaranteed by the chiral edge states of magnetic-dipolar modes in a quasi-2D ferrite disk.
Vortex Rings in two Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract:We study the structure of the vortex core in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We demonstrate that the order parameter may not vanish and the symmetry may not be restored in the core of the vortex. In this case such vortices can form vortex rings known as vortons in particle physics literature. In contrast with well-studied superfluid $^4He$, where similar vortex rings can be stable due to Magnus force only if they move, the vortex rings in two-component BECs can be stable even if they are at rest. This beautiful effect was first discussed by Witten in the cosmic string context, where it was shown that the stabilization occurs due to condensation of the second component of the field in the vortex core. This second condensate trapped in the core may carry a current along the vortex ring counteracting the effect of string tension that causes the loop to shrink. We speculate that such vortons may have been already observed in the laboratory. We also speculate that the experimental study of topological structures in BECs can provide a unique opportunity to study cosmology and astrophysics by doing laboratory experiments.
Phase Field Simulation of Magnetization Vortex in Ferromagnetic Nanomaterials

Abstract:Magnetization vortices in ferromagnetic nanostructures have attracted considerable attention due to their potential application in nanoscale memory devices. A magnetization vortex with in-plane curling magnetization and out-of-plane magnetization at the core is a unique stable state. The out-of-plane magnetization at the core can be switched from an upward state to a downward state or from a downward state to an upward state by a magnetic field or a spin-polarized current. This switchable property makes magnetization vortex a promising candidate for memory cells in future non-volatile data-storage devices. In this work, a real-space phase field model is developed to investigate the switching behavior of magnetization vortex in ferromagnetic nanostructures subjected to different mechanical strains. Based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation, the phase field model takes into account the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction of magnetizations, which includes the coupling between the magnetization and magnetization gradient. The governing equations in the phase field model are solved simultaneously by means of a nonlinear finite elements method, which can be employed to simulate magnetization vortex without periodic boundary condition. The phase field simulations demonstrate that the vortex polarity of a circular ferromagnetic nanodot can be switched by torsion when the sign of the torsion is opposite to that of vortex chirality, whereas switching does not take place if the sign of torsion is the same as that of vortex chirality. The magneto-elastic coupling and demagnetization field play a decisive role in the polarity switching, which involves an intriguing interplay of magnetization, strain and demagnetization. The results suggest another way to control vortex polarity and vortex stability by mechanical field other than magnetic field and electric current. It is also found that the DM interaction has significant influence on the structure of the magnetization vortex. The DM interaction induces an out-of-plane magnetization on the edge of the vortex and enlarges the size of the vortex core. The magnitude of the out-of-plane magnetization at the vortex core and the edge increases with the increase of DM constant. Besides, the handedness of magnetization vortex also changes when the sign of DM constant changes.
Large vortex state in ferromagnetic disks

Abstract:Magnetic vortices in soft ferromagnetic nano-disks have been extensively studied for at least several decades both for their fundamental (as a "live" macroscopic realization of a field theory model of an elementary particle) as well as applied value for high-speed high-density power-independent information storage. Here it is shown that there is another stable vortex state with large thickness-dependent core profile in nano-scale ferromagnetic disks of several exchange lengths in size. Its energy is computed numerically (in the framework of Magnetism@home distributed computing project) and its stability is studied analytically, which allows to plot it on magnetic phase diagram. In cylinders of certain geometries large vortices exist on par with classical ones, while being separated by an energy barrier, controllable by tuning the geometry and material of ferromagnetic disk. They can be an excellent candidate for magnetic information storage not only because the resulting disk sizes are among the smallest, able to support magnetic vortices, but also because it is the closest to the classical vortex state of all other known metastable states of magnetic nano-cylinder. It means that memory, based on switching between these two types of magnetic vortices, may, potentially, achieve the highest possible rate of switching.

Abstract:The distribution of vortices at low magnetic fields in single crystals of multiband BaFe${}_{2\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{x}}$Ni${}_{\mathrm{x}}$As${}_{2}$ (x $=$ 0.1 and x $=$ 0.16) superconductors is studied by Bitter decoration. Highly inhomogeneous vortex patterns, including vortex stripes and vortex clusters, are observed. The origin of these inhomogeneous vortex arrays is likely to be due to strong flux pinning, as suggested by magnetization measurements performed at high fields. Alternative possible scenarios, such as type-1.5 superconductivity due to multiband effect, are also discussed.

Abstract:Vortex-like inhomogeneities that can appear in ferromagnetic films with strong easy-plane uniaxial anisotropy in the presence of antidotes in the form of artificial nanoscale holes or nonmagnetic inclusions are investigated. Peculiarities of the structure of such type of nanoobjects are considered for various geometries of holes, and the effect of demagnetizing fields on vortex-like inhomogeneities localized near one, two, or four holes is analyzed. It is shown that the analytic estimates obtained here are in all cases in good agreement with the results of numerical simulation.

Abstract:Flexible ferromagnetic rings are spin-chain magnets, in which the magnetic and mechanical subsystems are coupled. The coupling is achieved through the tangentially oriented anisotropy axis. The possibility to operate the mechanics of the nanomagnets by controlling their magnetization is an important issue for the nanorobotics applications. A minimal model for the deformable curved anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnetic wire is proposed. An equilibrium phase diagram is constructed for the closed loop geometry: (i) A vortex state with vanishing total magnetic moment is typical for relatively large systems; in this case the wire has the form of a regular circle. (ii) A topologically trivial onion state with the planar magnetization distribution is realized in small enough systems; magnetic loop is elliptically deformed. By varying geometrical and elastic parameters a phase transition between the vortex and onion states takes place. The detailed analytical description of the phase diagram is well confirmed by numerical simulations.

Coherent Structures in Interacting Vortex Rings

Abstract:We investigate experimentally the nonlinear structures that develop from interacting vortex rings induced by a sinusoidally oscillating ellipsoidal disk in fluid at rest. We vary the scaled amplitude or Keulegan-Carpenter number 0.3 < N-KC = 2 pi Lambda/c < 1.5, where A is the oscillation amplitude and c is the major diameter of the disk, and the scaled frequency or Stokes number 100 < beta = f c(2)/nu < 1200, where f is the frequency of oscillation and. is the kinematic viscosity. Broadly consistent with global linear stability analyses, highly organized nonlinear structures with clear azimuthal wave number emerge as sequential vortex rings are shed from the disk. These organized structures exhibit wave numbers ranging from m = 2 to m = 9 and can be further divided into two distinct classes, distinguished by the phase and symmetry properties above and below the disk. We find some discrepancies between experiments and linear stability analysis, due to the inherent nonlinear mechanisms in the experiments, particulary on the boundary between the two branches, presenting unevenly distributed flow structures along the azimuthal direction.

Abstract:The correlation between magnetic spin structure and geometry in nanoscale chemically synthesized Fe3O4 rings has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. We find primarily the flux closure vortex states but in rings with thickness variations, an effective stray field occurs. Using tomography, we determine the complete three-dimensional geometries of thicker rings. A direct correlation between the geometry and the magnetization which points out of plane in the thickest parts of the ring yielding an intermediate magnetic state between the vortex state and the tube state is found. The interaction between exchange coupled rings leads to antiparallel vortex states and extended onion states.

Abstract:The existence of nonlinear objects of the vortex type in two-dimensional magnetic systems presents itself as one of the most promising candidates for the construction of nanodevices, useful for storing data, and for the construction of reading and writing magnetic heads. The vortex appears as the ground state of a magnetic nanodisk whose magnetic moments interact via dipole-dipole potential?. In this work it is investigated the conditions for the formation of vortices in nanodisks in triangular, square, and hexagonal lattices as a function of the size of the lattice and of the strength of the dipole interaction D. Our results show that there is a "transition" line separating the vortex state from a capacitor like state. This line has a finite size scaling form depending on the size, L, of the system as Dc=D0 +1/A(?1+B*L^2)?. This behavior is obeyed by the three types of lattices. Inside the vortex phase it is possible to identify two types of vortices separated by a constant, D=Dc, line: An in-plane and an out-of-plane vortex. We observed that the out-of-plane phase does not appear for the triangular lattice. In a two layer system the extra layer of dipoles works as an effective out-of-plane anisotropy inducing a large S^z component at the center of the vortex. Also, we analyzed the mechanism for switching the out-of-plane vortex component. Contrary to some reported results, we found evidences that the mechanism is not a creation-annihilation vortex anti-vortex process.

Abstract:Magnetic-dipolar-mode (MDM) oscillations in a quasi-2D ferrite disk show unique dynamical symmetry properties resulting in appearance of topologically distinct structures. Based on the magnetostatic (MS) spectral problem solutions, in this paper we give an evidence for eigen MS power-flow-density vortices in a ferrite disk. Due to these circular eigen power flows, the MDMs are characterized by MS energy eigen states. It becomes evident that the reason of stability of the vortex configurations in saturated ferrite samples is completely different from the nature of stability in magnetically soft cylindrical dots. We found a clear correspondence between analytically derived MDM vortex states and numerically modeled electromagnetic vortices in quasi-2D ferrite disks.

Abstract:The rotation of a magnetic vortex in a ferromagnet with a local smooth change in the exchange interaction is considered. The frequency of this precession is found for all distances of the vortex from defect center. The rotation velocity of the vortex nonmonotonically depends on the distance to the center, reaching a maximum at a distance of the order of the characteristic dimension of the defect. The decrease in velocity at large distances agrees with the data known in the literature. Accounting of attenuation leads to the vortex escape the defect or falling onto it along a logarithmic spiral.

Abstract:Motivated by recent experiments (Vengalattore et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett. 100: 170403, 2008 ; Vengalattore et al., arXiv:0901.3800 ), we study quasi 2D ferromagnetic condensates with various aspect ratios. We find that in zero magnetic field, dipolar energy generates a local energy minimum with all the spins lie in the 2D plane forming a row of circular spin textures with alternating orientation, corresponding to a packing of vortices of identical vorticity in different spin components. In a large magnetic field, the system can fall into a long lived dynamical state consisting of an array of elliptic and hyperbolic Mermin-Ho spin textures, while the true equilibrium is an uniaxial spin density wave with a single wave-vector along the magnetic field, and a wavelength similar to the characteristic length of the long lived vortex array state.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the possibility that concentric vortex rings, with-associated circulation of opposite sign, can propagate steadily as a coherent pair. Inviscid flow considerations suggest that such a configuration, which we define as a vortex ring pair, may be possible. Numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible, laminar flow show that, although diffusion results in a continual redistribution of vorticity, a quasi-steadily propagating vortex ring pair could be attained in practice. Experiments are reported to test this idea by generating counterrotating vortex ring pairs by impulsive fluid motion through an annular orifice. Depending on the normalized impulse and the orifice radius ratio, the vortex rings are observed either (i) to propagate together until diffusive effects or vortex ring instability destroys the coherent motion, or (ii) the inner ring propagates to some maximum axial distance where it reverses its direction and returns to the orifice wall, leaving the outer ring free to continue its forward motion unabated. Numerical simulation shows that the stable flow of the vortex ring trajectories can be reasonably well reproduced. The boundary separating motion (i) from (ii) and the normalized inner ring penetration distance are found over the range of impulse and radius ratio covered by the experiments. Other observed features of vortex ring motion including self-similar trajectories of the spiral core centres during vortex sheet roll-up and ring instability are also presented.

Dynamics of coupled vortices in layered magnetic nanodots

Abstract:The spin dynamics are calculated for a model system consisting of magnetically soft, layered nanomagnets, in which two ferromagnetic (F) cylindrical dots, each with a magnetic vortex ground state, are separated by a non-magnetic spacer (N). This permits a study of the effects of interlayer magnetostatic interactions on the vortex dynamics. The system was explored by applying the equations of motion for the vortex core positions. The restoring force was calculated taking into account the magnetostatic interactions assuming a realistic surface charge free spin distribution. For tri-layer F/N/F dots with opposite chiralities and the same core polarizations (lowest energy state), two eigenmodes are predicted analytically and confirmed via micromagnetic simulations. One mode is in the sub-GHz range for submicron dot diameters and corresponds to quasi-circular rotation of the cores about the dot center. A second mode is in the MHz range corresponding to a small amplitude rotation of the mean core position. The eigenfrequencies depend strongly on the geometrical parameters of the system, suggesting that magnetostatic effects play a dominant role in determining the vortex dynamics.

Abstract:We demonstrate that a magnetic vortex generated by the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction is stable state in a spatially confined system. The properties of the locally confined magnetic vortex structure are investigated by performing Monte-Carlo simulations and theoretical calculations. The results reveal the relationship between the confinement size and the magnetic vortex size. We obtain the structural size of the most stable magnetic vortex as well as the critical size above which the magnetic vortex becomes unstable. The field required to flip the vortex core was estimated theoretically and compared with simulation results. The thermal stability of the magnetic vortex is also discussed.
