Abstract:Let K be a non-trivial knot in the 3-sphere and let Y(r) be the 3-manifold obtained by surgery on K with surgery-coefficient a rational number r. We show that there is a homomorphism from the fundamental group of Y(r) to SU(2) with non-cyclic image if r is less than or equal to 2.

Abstract:Abstract We study closed connected orientable 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery along the oriented components of a link, introduced and considered by Motegi and Song (2005) and Ichihara et al. (2008). For such manifolds, we find a finite balanced group presentation of the fundamental group and describe exceptional surgeries. This allows us to construct an infinite family of tunnel number one strongly invertible hyperbolic knots with three parameters, which admit toroidal surgeries and Seifert fibered surgeries. Among the obtained results, we mention that for every integer $$n >5$$ n > 5 there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots in the 3–sphere, whose $$(n-2)$$ ( n - 2 ) and $$(n+1)$$ ( n + 1 ) -surgeries are toroidal, and $$(n-1)$$ ( n - 1 ) and n -surgeries are Seifert fibered.

Abstract:Let K be a fibered knot in the 3-sphere. We show that if the monodromy of K is sufficiently complicated, then Dehn surgery on K cannot yield a lens space. Work of Yi Ni shows that if K has a lens space surgery then it is fibered. Combining this with our result we see that if K has a lens space surgery then it is fibered and the monodromy is relatively simple.

Abstract:A surgery on a knot in 3-sphere is called SU(2)-cyclic if it gives a manifold whose fundamental group has no non-cyclic SU(2) representations. Using holonomy perturbations on the Chern-Simons functional, we prove that the distance of two SU(2)-cyclic surgery coefficients is bounded by the sum of the absolute values of their numerators. This is an analog of Culler-Gordon-Luecke-Shalen's cyclic surgery theorem.

Abstract:Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called cosmetic if they yield homeomorphic three-manifolds. We show for a certain family of null-homologous knots in any closed orientable three-manifold, if the knot admits cosmetic surgeries with a pair of positive surgery coefficients, then the coefficients are both greater than $1$. In addition, for this family of knots, we show that $1/q$ Dehn surgery for $q$ at least $2$ is not homeomorphic to the original three-manifold. The proofs of these results use the mapping cone formula for the Heegaard Floer homology of Dehn surgery in terms of the knot Floer homology of the knot; we provide a new proof of this formula for integer surgeries in $\text{Spin}^c$ structures with nontorsion first Chern class.

Abstract:We provide new examples of 3-manifolds with weight one fundamental group and the same integral homology as the lens space $L(2k,1)$ which are not surgery on any knot in the three-sphere. Our argument uses Furuta's 10/8-theorem, and is simple and combinatorial to apply.

Abstract:We study Dehn surgeries on null-homotopic knots that yield fibred $3$--manifolds when an additional (but natural) homological restriction is imposed. The major tool used is Gabai's theory of sutured manifold decomposition. Such surgeries are negative examples to a question of Michel Boileau. Another result we will prove is about surgeries which reduce the Thurston norm of a fibred manifold.

Abstract:In this article, we apply slope detection techniques to study properties of toroidal $3$-manifolds obtained by performing Dehn surgeries on satellite knots in the context of the $L$-space conjecture. We show that if $K$ is an $L$-space knot or admits an irreducible rational surgery with non-left-orderable fundamental group, then the JSJ graph of its exterior is a rooted interval. Consequently, any rational surgery on a composite knot has a left-orderable fundamental group. This is the left-orderable counterpart of Krcatovich's result on the primeness of $L$-space knots, which we reprove using our methods. Analogous results on the existence of co-orientable taut foliations are proved when the knot has a fibred companion. Our results suggest a new approach to establishing the counterpart of Krcatovich's result for surgeries with co-orientable taut foliations, on which partial results have been achieved by Delman and Roberts. Finally, we prove results on left-orderable $p/q$-surgeries on knots with $p$ small.

Abstract:A consequence of the Cabling Conjecture of Gonzalez-Acuña and Short is that Dehn surgery on a knot in $S^3$ cannot produce a manifold with more than two connected summands. In the event that some Dehn surgery produces a manifold with three or more connected summands, then the surgery parameter is bounded in terms of the bridge number by a result of Sayari. Here this bound is sharpened, providing further evidence in favour of the Cabling Conjecture.

Abstract:Previous work of the authors establishes a criterion on the fundamental group of a knot complement that determines when Dehn surgery on the knot will have a fundamental group that is not left-orderable. We provide a refinement of this criterion by introducing the notion of a decayed knot; it is shown that Dehn surgery on decayed knots produces surgery manifolds that have non-left-orderable fundamental group for all sufficiently positive surgeries. As an application, we prove that sufficiently positive cables of decayed knots are always decayed knots. These results mirror properties of L-space surgeries in the context of Heegaard Floer homology.

Abstract:The construction of knots via annular twisting has been used to create families of knots yielding the same manifold via Dehn surgery. Prior examples have all involved Dehn surgery where the surgery slope is an integral multiple of 2. In this note we prove that for any integer $n$ there exist infinitely many different knots in $S^3$ such that $n$-surgery on those knots yields the same manifold. In particular, when $|n|=1$ homology spheres arise from these surgeries. In addition, when $n \neq 0$ the bridge numbers of the knots constructed tend to infinity as the number of twists along the annulus increases.

Abstract:Boyer, Gordon, and Watson have conjectured that an irreducible rational homology 3-sphere is an L-space if and only if its fundamental group is not left-orderable. Since Dehn surgeries on knots in $S^3$ can produce large families of L-spaces, it is natural to examine the conjecture on these 3-manifolds. Greene, Lewallen, and Vafaee have proved that all 1-bridge braids are L-space knots. In this paper, we consider three families of 1-bridge braids. First we calculate the knot groups and peripheral subgroups. We then verify the conjecture on the three cases by applying the criterion developed by Christianson, Goluboff, Hamann, and Varadaraj, when they verified the same conjecture for certain twisted torus knots and generalized the criteria of Clay and Watson and of Ichihara and Temma.

Abstract:This paper concerns the Dehn surgery construction, especially those Dehn surgeries leaving the manifold unchanged. In particular, we describe an oriented 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold X with a pair of slopes r_1, r_2 such that the Dehn filled manifolds X(r_1), X(r_2) are oppositely oriented copies of the lens space L(49,18), and there is no homeomorphism h of X such that h(r_1)=h(r_2).

Abstract:A knot in the 3-sphere is called an L--space knot if it admits a nontrivial Dehn surgery yielding an L--space. Like torus knots and Berge knots, many L--space knots admit also a Seifert fibered surgery. We give a concrete example of a hyperbolic, L-space knot which has no exceptional surgeries, in particular, no Seifert fibered surgeries.

Abstract:Surgery exact triangles in various 3-manifold Floer homology theories provide an important tool in studying and computing the relevant Floer homology groups. These exact triangles relate the invariants of 3-manifolds, obtained by three different Dehn surgeries on a fixed knot. In this paper, the behavior of $SU(N)$-instanton Floer homology with respect to Dehn surgery is studied. In particular, it is shown that there are surgery exact tetragons and pentagons, respectively, for $SU(3)$- and $SU(4)$-instanton Floer homologies. It is also conjectured that $SU(N)$-instanton Floer homology in general admits a surgery exact $(N+1)$-gon. An essential step in the proof is the construction of a family of asymptotically cylindrical metrics on ALE spaces of type $A_n$. This family is parametrized by the $(n-2)$-dimensional associahedron and consists of anti-self-dual metrics with positive scalar curvature. The metrics in the family also admit a torus symmetry.

Abstract:We examine certain symmetries in the deficiencies of a rational surgery on a knot in $S^3$ by comparing the $\text{Spin}^c$-structures on the rational surgery with those on a related integral surgery. We then provide an application of these symmetries in the form of a theorem that obstructs Dehn surgeries in $S^3$. This last part unifies and generalises theorems by Greene underlying his work on the cabling conjecture, the lens space realisation problem, and the unknotting number of alternating 3-braids.

Abstract:We introduce a new method of detecting when the fundamental group of a Dehn surgery on a knot admits a left-ordering, a method which is particularly useful for 2-bridge knots. As an illustration of this method, we show that all Dehn surgeries on the knot $6_2$ with slope in the interval $(-4, 8)\cap\mathbb{Q}$ have left-orderable fundamental groups by exhibiting a family of hyperbolic $\widetilde{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-representations of the knot complement group.

Abstract:We use Dehn surgery methods to construct infinite families of hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere satisfying a weak form of the Turaev--Viro invariants volume conjecture. The results have applications to a conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum, and Ueno about quantum representations of surface mapping class groups. We obtain an explicit family of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes acting on surfaces of any genus and with one boundary component that satisfy the conjecture.

Abstract:We give an estimate for Manolescu's $\kappa$-invariant of a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ by the data of a spin 4-orbifold bounded by $Y$. By an appropriate choice of a 4-orbifold, sometimes we can restrict and determine the value of $\kappa$. We give such examples in case of Dehn surgeries along knots in $S^3$.
