Abstract:The current status of measurements of the nucleon structure functions and their understanding is reviewed. The fixed target experiments E665, CCFR and NMC and the HERA experiments H1 and ZEUS are discussed in some detail. The extraction of parton momentum distribution functions from global fits is described, with particular attention paid to much improved information on the gluon momentum distribution. The status of α s measurements from deep inelastic data is reviewed. Models and nonperturbative approaches for the parton input distributions are outlined. The impact on the phenomenology of QCD of the data at very low values of the Bjorken x variable is discussed in detail. Recent advances in the understanding of the transition from deep inelastic scattering to photoproduction are summarized. Some brief comments are made on the recent HERA measurements of the ep NC and CC cross-sections at very high Q 2 .

Abstract:The current status of global QCD analysis of parton distribution functions of the nucleon is reviewed. Recent progress made in determining various features of the parton structure of the nucleon, as well as outstanding open questions are discussed. These include: the small-$x$ and large-$x$ behavior of the partons, particularly the gluon; the differentiation of $u$ and $d$ quarks; the strangeness sea ($s+\bar{s}$), the strangeness asymmetry ($s-\bar{s}$); and the heavy quark distributions $c$ and $b$. Important issues about assessing the uncertainties of parton distributions and their physical predictions are considered. These developments are all critical for the physics programs of HERA II, Tevatron Run II, RHIC, and LHC.
Parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions of spin-1 hadrons

Abstract:Structure functions of the spin-1 deuteron will be investigated experimentally from the late 2020's at various facilities such as Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, nuclotron-based ion collider facility, and electron-ion colliders. We expect that a new high-energy spin-physics field could be created by these projects. In this paper, the current theoretical status is explained for the structure functions of spin-1 hadrons, especially on parton distribution functions, transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions, and fragmentation functions. Related multiparton distribution functions are also shown.

Theoretical perspective for the future experiments on parton densities

Abstract:I explain the current status of parton-distribution-function (PDF) studies and future experimental prospects on their determinations. First, unpolarized PDFs of the nucleon are introduced as a field of precision QCD physics including higher-order $\alpha_s$ corrections. Second, nuclear PDFs and polarized nucleonic PDFs are discussed. Third, the determination of fragmentation functions is explained. Forth, the three-dimensional (3D) structure functions are discussed in connection with the origin of the nucleon spin and gravitational form factors of hadrons. By the 3D structure functions, gravitational sources and the origin of nucleon mass could be clarified in the microscopic level of quarks and gluons. Furthermore, 3D structure studies of hadrons could be used for clarifying internal structure of exotic hadron candidates, nuclear composition of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, and color-entanglement phenomena. The PDF field will be developed further along with progress in other fields of science.

Abstract:Some new development in nuclear structure studies are reviewed briefly. Nuclear supersymmetry put forward in 1980 has been tested in odd - odd nucleus in 1999. In nuclear algebraic models, the problem of reduction in collectivity has been solved. There have been extensive analytic formulas for eletromagnetic transitions in octupole vibration in algebraic model, and they are convenient in analysing nuclear data. It is found that (158)Gd is the best experimental example for octupole vibration so far. In nuclear shell model, Monto Carlo shell model and projected shell model have made considerable advancement. Finally, an outlook for nuclear structure in 21st century is made briefly.

Abstract:We review the present status of polarized structure functions measured in deep-inelastic scattering. We discuss the x and Q^2 dependence of the structure function g_1, and how it can be used to test perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order and beyond. We summarize the current knowledge of polarized parton distributions, in particular the determination of the first moment of the quark and gluon distributions and the axial charge of the nucleon. We critically examine what future experiments could teach us on the polarized structure of the nucleon.

Abstract:We present a model based on a dipole picture with a hard and a soft pomeron in which large dipoles couple to the soft pomeron and small dipoles couple to the hard pomeron. The parameters in the model are fixed by proton-proton scattering and the proton structure function. The model is then applied successfully to the proton charm structure function, the proton longitudinal structure function, J/psi photoproduction, deep virtual Compton scattering, the real photon-proton total cross section, the real photon-photon cross section, and the photon structure function. Differences between our predictions and data on charm production in real photon-photon interactions and the virtual gamma-gamma cross section are discussed.

Abstract:The idea of ``dynamically'' generated parton distribution functions, based on regular initial conditions at low momentum scale, is reanalyzed with particular emphasize paid to its compatibility with the factorization mechanism. Basic consequences of this approach are discussed and compared to those of the conventional approach, employing singular initial distribution functions.

Abstract:<p>The correlation between structure and function lies at the heart of materials science and engineering. Especially, modern functional materials usually contain inhomogeneities at an atomic level, endowing them with interesting properties regarding electrons, phonons, and magnetic moments. Over the past few decades, many of the key developments in functional materials have been driven by the rapid advances in short‐range crystallographic techniques. Among them, pair distribution function (PDF) technique, capable of utilizing the entire Bragg and diffuse scattering signals, stands out as a powerful tool for detecting local structure away from average. With the advent of synchrotron X‐rays, spallation neutrons, and advanced computing power, the PDF can quantitatively encode a local structure and in turn guide atomic‐scale engineering in the functional materials. Here, the PDF investigations in a range of functional materials are reviewed, including ferroelectrics/thermoelectrics, colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) magnets, high‐temperature superconductors (HTSC), quantum dots (QDs), nano‐catalysts, and energy storage materials, where the links between functions and structural inhomogeneities are prominent. For each application, a brief description of the structure‐function coupling will be given, followed by selected cases of PDF investigations. Before that, an overview of the theory, methodology, and unique power of the PDF method will be also presented.</p>

Structure functions in the polarized Drell-Yan processes with spin-1/2 and spin-1 hadrons: I. general formalism

Abstract:We discuss general formalism for the structure functions which can be investigated in the polarized Drell-Yan processes with spin-1/2 and spin-1 hadrons. To be specific, the formalism can be applied to the proton-deuteron Drell-Yan processes. Because of the spin-1 nature, there are new structure functions which cannot be studied in the proton-proton reactions. Imposing Hermiticity, parity conservation, and time-reversal invariance, we find that 108 structure functions exist in the Drell-Yan processes. However, the number reduces to 22 after integrating the cross section over the virtual-photon transverse momentum Q_T or after taking the limit Q_T->0. There are 11 new structure functions in addition to the 11 ones in the Drell-Yan processes of spin-1/2 hadrons. The additional structure functions are associated with the tensor structure of the spin-1 hadron, and they could be measured by quadrupole spin asymmetries. For example, the structure functions exist for "intermediate" polarization although their contributions vanish in the longitudinal and transverse polarization reactions. We show a number of spin asymmetries for extracting the polarized structure functions. The proton-deuteron reaction may be realized in the RHIC-Spin project and other future ones, and it could be a new direction of next generation high-energy spin physics.

Abstract:Analyses of the pion valence-quark distribution function (DF), , which explicitly incorporate the behaviour of the pion wave function prescribed by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), predict , $$\beta (\zeta \gtrsim m_p)>2$$ , where $$m_p$$ is the proton mass. Nevertheless, more than forty years after the first experiment to collect data suitable for extracting the $$x\simeq 1$$ behaviour of , the empirical status remains uncertain because some methods used to fit existing data return a result for that violates this constraint. Such disagreement entails one of the following conclusions: the analysis concerned is incomplete; not all data being considered are a true expression of qualities intrinsic to the pion; or QCD, as it is currently understood, is not the theory of strong interactions. New, precise data are necessary before a final conclusion is possible. In developing these positions, we exploit a single proposition, viz. there is an effective charge which defines an evolution scheme for parton DFs that is all-orders exact. This proposition has numerous corollaries, which can be used to test the character of any DF, whether fitted or calculated.

Abstract:Nucleon structure functions, as measured in lepton-nucleon scattering, have historically provided a critical observable in the study of partonic dynamics within the nucleon. However, at very large parton momenta it is both experimentally and theoretically challenging to extract parton distributions due to the probable onset of non-perturbative contributions and the unavailability of high precision data at critical kinematics. Extraction of the neutron structure and the d-quark distribution have been further challenging due to the necessity of applying nuclear corrections when utilizing scattering data from a deuteron target to extract free neutron structure. However, a program of experiments has been carried out recently at the energy-upgraded Jefferson Lab electron accelerator aimed at significantly reducing the nuclear correction uncertainties on the d-quark distribution function at large partonic momentum. This allows leveraging the vast body of deuterium data covering a large kinematic range to be utilized for d-quark parton distribution function extraction. We present new data from experiment E12-10-002 carried out in Jefferson Lab Hall C on the deuteron to proton cross-section ratio at large BJorken-x. These results significantly improve the precision of existing data, and provide a first look at the expected impact on quark distributions extracted from global parton distribution function fits.

Recent progresses on the application of the covariant density functional theory as well as its extensions by the group in Beijing for a series of interests and hot topics in nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure are reviewed, including the rapid neutron-capture process, Th/U chronometer, halo and giant halo in density dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov, and neutron halo in deformed nuclei.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of a (sizable) nonperturbative contribution to the charm parton distribution function (PDF) in a nucleon, theoretical issues arising in its interpretation, and its potential impact on LHC scattering processes. The "fitted charm" PDF obtained in various QCD analyses contains a process-dependent component that is partly traced to power-suppressed radiative contributions in DIS and is generally different at the LHC. We discuss separation of the universal component of the nonperturbative charm from the rest of the radiative contributions and estimate its magnitude in the CT14 global QCD analysis at the next-to-next-to leading order in the QCD coupling strength, including the latest experimental data from HERA and the Large Hadron Collider. Models for the nonperturbative charm PDF are examined as a function of the charm quark mass and other parameters. The prospects for testing these models in the associated production of a Z boson and a charm jet at the LHC are studied under realistic assumptions, including effects of the final-state parton showering.

Impressions of Parton Distribution Functions

Abstract:Parton distribution functions (DFs) have long been recognised as key measures of hadron structure. Today, theoretical prediction of such DFs is becoming possible using diverse methods for continuum and lattice analyses of strong interaction (QCD) matrix elements. Recent developments include a demonstration that continuum and lattice analyses yield mutually consistent results for all pion DFs, with behaviour on the far valence domain of light-front momentum fraction that matches QCD expectations. Theory is also delivering an understanding of the distributions of proton mass and spin amongst its constituents, which varies, of course, with the resolving scale of the measuring probe. Aspects of these developments are sketched herein.

Polarized Structure Functions: Theory and Phenomenology

Abstract:We review the theory of polarized structure functions measured in deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, focusing on the most recent developments. We concentrate on the structure function $g_1$, emphasizing the phenomenological problems related to the extraction of the proton and neutron $g_1(x,Q^2)$ from the data, and to the determination of its moments, especially the first moment. In particular, we discuss the theoretical and experimental uncertainties due to the $Q^2$ dependence of the data, small and large $x$ extrapolations, QCD loop corrections, higher twist corrections, and, in connection to neutron experiments, nuclear effects. We also discuss the current status of the sum rules satisfied by the first moment of $g_1$ and their theoretical interpretation.

Spin-dependent Parton Distributions from Polarized Structure Function Data

Abstract:In the past year, polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments at CERN and SLAC have obtained structure function measurements off proton, neutron and deuteron targets at a level of precision never before achieved. The measurements can be used to test the Bjorken and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules, and also to obtain information on the parton distributions in polarized nucleons. We perform a global leading-order QCD fit to the proton deep inelastic data in order to extract the spin-dependent parton distributions. By using parametric forms which are consistent with theoretical expectations at large and small $x$, we find that the quark distributions are now rather well constrained. We assume that there is no significant intrinsic polarization of the strange quark sea. The data are then consistent with a modest amount of the proton's spin carried by the gluon, although the shape of the gluon distribution is not well constrained, and several qualitatively different shapes are suggested. The spin-dependent distributions we obtain can be used as input to phenomenological studies for future polarized hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron colliders.

Abstract:The need for accurate and precise polarised parton distribution functions (PDFs) is becoming increasingly crucial in view of the Electron-Ion Collider experimental program foreseen in the coming years. Two global PDF determinations at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy have been recently presented, MAPPDFpol1.0 and BDSSV24. I review the former and I provide a comparative discussion of other PDF sets accurate to next-to-leading order. I show that differences between these PDF sets, due to the choice of experimental and methodological input, exceed differences due to perturbative accuracy.
