Abstract:Novae are cataclysmic variable binary systems in which a white dwarf primary is accreting material from a low mass companion. The importance of this accretion takes on added significance if the WD can increase its mass to reach the Chandrasekhar limit thus exploding as a Type Ia supernova. In this study we accrete material of Solar composition onto carbon-oxygen white dwarfs of 0.70, 1.00 and 1.35 Msun with accretion rates from 1.6e-10 to 1.6e-6 Msun per yr. We have utilized the MESA stellar evolution code for our modeling and evolve them for many nova cycles or, in some cases, evolution to a red giant stage. Differing behaviors occur as a function of both the WD mass and the accretion rate. For the lower WD masses, the models undergo recurrent hydrogen flashes at low accretion rates; for higher accretion rates, steady-burning of hydrogen occurs and eventually gives way to recurrent hydrogen flashes. At the highest accretion rates, these models go through a steady-burning phase but eventually transition into red giants. For the highest white dwarf mass recurrent hydrogen flashes occur at lower accretion rates but for higher rates the models exhibit steady-burning interspersed with helium flashes. We find that for all our models that undergo recurrent hydrogen flashes, as well as the steady-burning models that exhibit helium flashes, the mass of the WD continues to grow toward the Chandrasekhar limit. These results suggest that the accretion of Solar abundance material onto carbon-oxygen white dwarfs in cataclysmic variable systems, the single degenerate scenario, is a viable channel for progenitors of Type Ia supernova explosions.

Abstract:In this chapter we consider the processes which can lead to X-ray emission from different types of cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). CVs are semi-detached, binary star systems where material is transferred from the donor star (also known as the companion or secondary star) onto the white dwarf primary. CVs are divided into several sub-classes based on the observed phenomenology in the optical and X-ray bands, which, in turn, is largely defined by the magnetic field strength of the accretor. In non-magnetic systems, a variety of observed behaviours are identified, depending on the accretion rate: novae, dwarf novae, nova-like variables, symbiotic binaries and supersoft sources are all examples of non-magnetic CVs. In magnetic systems (polars and intermediate polars, or AM Her and DQ Her systems, respectively), the accretion flow is channelled to polar regions, and the observational appearance is different. X-rays are typically produced through hot or energetic processes, and in CVs they are formed via shocks (within a boundary layer or accretion column, or through interactions either internal to the nova ejecta, or between the ejecta and a stellar wind) or from hydrogen burning (either steady fusion, or a thermonuclear runaway). All of these different types of accreting white dwarfs are discussed here, considering both spectral and temporal variability in the different populations.

Abstract:<p>Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) are compact binaries with white dwarf (WD) primaries. CVs and other accreting WD binaries (AWBs) are useful laboratories for studying accretion flows, gas dynamics, outflows, transient outbursts, and explosive nuclear burning under different astrophysical plasma conditions. They have been studied over decades and are important for population studies of galactic X-ray sources. Recent space- and ground-based high resolution spectral and timing studies, along with recent surveys indicate that we still have observational and theoretical complexities yet to answer. I review accretion in nonmagnetic CVs in the light of X-ray observations. I present X-ray diagnostics of accretion in dwarf novae and the disk outbursts, the nova-like systems, and the state of the research on the disk winds and outflows in the nonmagnetic CVs together with comparisons and relations to classical and recurrent nova systems, AM CVns and Symbiotic systems. I discuss how the advective hot accretion flows (ADAF-like) in the inner regions of accretion disks (merged with boundary layer zones) in nonmagnetic CVs explain most of the discrepancies and complexities that have been encountered in the X-ray observations. I stress how flickering variability studies from optical to X-rays can be probes to determine accretion history and disk structure together with how the temporal and spectral variability of CVs are related to that of LMXBs and AGNs. Finally, I discuss the nature of accretion in nonmagnetic WDs in terms of ADAF-like accretion flows, and elaborate on the solutions it brings and its complications, constructing an observational framework to motivate new theoretical calculations that introduce this flow-type in disks, outflow and wind models together with disk-instability models of outbursts and nova outbursts in AWBs and WD physics, in general.</p>

An accretion model for the eclipsing cataclysmic variable PG0859+415

Abstract:The emission lines found in the majority of cataclysmic variables are generally used as tracers of accretion flows which dominate the light at optical wavelengths. It has been suggested from previous observations that the eclipsing nova-like variable PG0859+415 shows individualistic orbital characteristics which are inconsistent with canonical models of stellar accretion. We present spectrophotometry of this star which suggest that the standard picture is not in conflict with observation. We provide evidence that the shallow optical eclipses are of an extended bright spot rather than the accretion disc, and that the low-excitation lines are dominated by a transient absorption component, perhaps a result of the bright spot or accretion stream eclipsing the disc. We argue that this object may be another nova-like variable displaying long-term or cyclic variations in mass-transfer rate from the secondary star.

Theoretical Modeling of the Thermal State of Accreting White Dwarfs Undergoing Classical Novae

Abstract:White dwarfs experience a thermal renaissance when they receive mass from a stellar companion in a binary. For accretion rates < 10^-8 Msun/yr, the freshly accumulated hydrogen/helium envelope ignites in a thermally unstable manner that results in a classical novae (CN) outburst and ejection of material. We have undertaken a theoretical study of the impact of the accumulating envelope on the thermal state of the underlying white dwarf (WD). This has allowed us to find the equilibrium WD core temperatures (T_c), the classical nova ignition masses (M_ign) and the thermal luminosities for WDs accreting at rates of 10^-11 - 10^-8 Msun/yr. These accretion rates are most appropriate to WDs in cataclysmic variables (CVs) of P_orb <~ 7 hr, many of which accrete sporadically as dwarf novae. We have included ^3He in the accreted material at levels appropriate for CVs and find that it significantly modifies the CN ignition mass. We compare our results with several others from the CN literature and find that the inclusion of ^3He leads to lower M_ign for <Mdot> >~ 10^-10 Msun/yr, and that for <Mdot> below this the particular author's assumption concerning T_c, which we calculate consistently, is a determining factor. Initial comparisons of our CN ignition masses with measured ejected masses find reasonable agreement and point to ejection of material comparable to that accreted.

Eruptive novae in symbiotic systems

Abstract:We conduct numerical simulations of multiple nova eruptions in detached, widely separated symbiotic systems that include an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion to investigate the impact of white dwarf (WD) mass and binary separation on the evolution of the system. The accretion rate is determined using the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton method, incorporating orbital momentum loss caused by factors such as gravitational radiation, magnetic braking, and drag. The WD in such a system accretes matter coming from the strong wind of an AGB companion until it finishes shedding its envelope. This occurs on an evolutionary time scale of $\approx 3 \times 10^5$ years. Throughout all simulations, we use a consistent AGB model with an initial mass of $1.0 \mathrm {M_\odot}$ while varying the WD mass and binary separation, as they are the critical factors influencing nova eruption behavior. We find that the accretion rate fluctuates between high and low rates during the evolutionary period, significantly impacted by the AGB's mass loss rate. We show that unlike novae in cataclysmic variables, the orbital period may either increase or decrease during evolution, depending on the model, while the separation consistently decreases. Furthermore, we have identified cases in which the WDs produce weak, non-ejective novae and experience mass gain. This suggests that provided the accretion efficiency can be achieved by a more massive WD and maintained for long enough, they could potentially serve as progenitors for type Ia supernovae.

Abstract:Recent results are presented and discussed regarding the EUV and X-ray emission of nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables. Emphasis is given to high accretion rate systems (novalike variables and dwarf novae in outburst), and to a number of apparent discrepancies between observations and the theory of the boundary layer between the accretion disk and the surface of the white dwarf. Discussed are EUV and X-ray light curves, dwarf nova oscillations, and spectra, with new and previously unpublished results on SS Cyg and OY Car.

Abstract:Accreting white dwarfs in Cataclysmic variables (CVs) show short-period (tens of minutes) brightness variations that are consistent with non-radial oscillations similar to gravity (g) modes observed in isolated white dwarfs (WDs). GW Librae, a dwarf nova, was the first CV in which non-radial oscillations were observed and continues to be the best studied accreting WD displaying these pulsations. Unlike isolated WDs, accreting WDs rotate rapidly, with spin periods comparable to or shorter than typical low-order oscillation periods. Accreting WDs also have a different relationship between their interior temperature and surface temperature. The surface temperature of an accreting WD varies on a months to year timescale between dwarf novae accretion events, allowing study of how this temperature change effects g-mode behavior. Here we show results from adiabatic seismological calculations for accreting WDs, focusing on low-order ($\ell=1$) modes. We demonstrate how g-modes vary in response to temperature changes in the subsurface layers due to a dwarf nova accretion event. These calculations include rotation non-perturbatively, required by the high spin rate. We discuss the thermal history of these accreting WDs, and compare the seismological properties with and without rotation. Comparison of $g$-mode frequencies to observed objects may allow inference of features of the structure of the WD such as mass, surface abundance, accretion history, and more. The variation of mode frequencies during cooling after an outburst provides a novel method of identifying modes.

Abstract:The hydrogen-rich envelopes accreted by white dwarf stars from their red dwarf companions lead to thermonuclear runaways observed as classical nova eruptions peaking at up to 1 Million solar luminosities. Virtually all nova progenitors are novalike binaries exhibiting high rates of mass transfer to their white dwarfs before and after an eruption. It is a puzzle that binaries indistinguishable from novalikes, but with much lower mass transfer rates, and resulting dwarf nova outbursts, co-exist at the same orbital periods. Nova shells surrounding several dwarf novae demonstrate that at least some novae become dwarf novae between successive nova eruptions, though the mechanisms and timescales governing mass transfer rate variations are poorly understood. Here we report simulations of the multiGyr evolution of novae which self-consistently model every eruption's thermonuclear runaway, mass and angular momentum losses, feedback due to irradiation and variable mass transfer, and orbital size and period changes. The simulations reproduce the observed wide range of mass transfer rates at a given orbital period, with large and cyclic changes in white dwarf-red dwarf binaries emerging on kyr to Myr timescales. They also demonstrate that deep hibernation, (complete stoppage of mass transfer for long periods), occurs only in short-period binaries; that initially very different binaries converge to become nearly identical systems; that while almost all prenovae should be novalike binaries, dwarf novae should also occasionally be observed to give rise to novae; and that the masses of white dwarfs decrease only slightly while their red dwarf companions are consumed.

The high-accretion-rate states of (non-magnetic) CVs can be divided into the short-lived outbursts (∼a week), typical of dwarf novae (DNe), and the long-lived (and sometimes perpetual) high states of nova-like (NL) CVs. Since both sorts of high-state occur in approximately steady-state accretion discs with similar properties and accretors, we would expect them to display similar spectral energy distributions. However, previous analyses based on UV spectra from the International Ultraviolet Explorer have shown that their spectral energy distributions are different. We perform a re-analysis of the data using up to date calibrations and distance (and thus dereddening) estimates to test whether this difference persists and whether it is statistically significant over the sample. We find that it does persist, and it is statistically significant. We propose routes to investigating this discrepancy further and discuss the implications this has for other accreting systems, such as X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei, and protoplanetary discs.

White Dwarf Mass Growth in Cataclysmic Variables: Roles of Dwarf Novae

Abstract:The disc instability mechanism (DIM) is widely accepted to account for the transient behaviour of dwarf novae (DNe), which experience short outbursts separated by long quiescence. The duty cycle (the ratio between the outburst duration and the recurrence time) determines the amount of accreted mass by the white dwarf (WDs) during outbursts, thus playing an important role in the long-term binary evolution. Employing the code of Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics, we systemically investigate the influence of the duty cycles on the evolution of DNe and the mass growth of accreting carbon-oxygen (CO) WDs. Our calculations show that, while the DIM can considerably influence the accretion process, efficient WD-mass growth requires a particular range of the duty cycle. For WDs with the initial masses of 0.6, 0.7 and 1.1 $M_\odot$, these duty cycles are 0.006$\,\leq$$d$$\,\leq$0.007, $d$\,=\,0.005 and $d$\,=\,0.003, and the accumulated mass of the WDs can reach 0.1, 0.13 and 0.21 $M_\odot$, respectively. In all of our simulations, no CO WDs can grow their masses to the explosion mass of Type Ia supernovae of about $1.38~M_\odot$. Because of a much short timescale of the outburst state, the final donor-star masses and orbital periods are insensitive to the duty cycles. Therefore, we propose that the DIM in DNe could alleviate the WD mass problem to some extent.

Accretion Variability as a Guide to Stellar Mass Assembly

Abstract:Variable accretion in young stellar objects reveals itself photometrically and spectroscopically over a continuum of timescales and amplitudes. Most dramatic are the large outbursts (e.g., FU Ori, V1647 Ori, and EX Lup type events), but more frequent are the less coherent, smaller burst-like variations in accretion rate. Improving our understanding of time-variable accretion directly addresses the fundamental question of how stars gain their masses. We review variability phenomena, as characterized from observations across the wavelength spectrum, and how those observations probe underlying physical conditions. The diversity of observed lightcurves and spectra at optical and infrared wavelengths defies a simple classification of outbursts and bursts into well-defined categories. Mid-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths are sensitive to lower-temperature phenomena and more embedded, younger sources, and it is currently unclear if observed flux variations probe similar or distinct physics relative to the shorter wavelengths. We highlight unresolved issues and emphasize the value of spectroscopy, multiwavelength studies, and ultimately patience in using variable accretion to understand stellar mass assembly.

On the origin of the peculiar cataclysmic variable AE Aquarii

Abstract:The nova-like variable AE Aquarii is a close binary system containing a red dwarf and a magnetized white dwarf rotating with the period of 33 seconds. A short spin period of the white dwarf is caused by an intensive mass exchange between the system components during a previous epoch. We show that a high rate of disk accretion onto the white dwarf surface resulted in temporary screening of its magnetic field and spin-up of the white dwarf to its present spin period. Transition of the white dwarf to the ejector state occurred at a final stage of the spin-up epoch after its magnetic field had emerged from the accreted plasma due to diffusion. In the frame of this scenario AE Aqr represents a missing link in the chain of Polars evolution and the white dwarf resembles a recycled pulsar.

The effect of enriched accreted matter on the development of novae

Abstract:ABSTRACT The development of a nova eruption is well known to be determined by the white dwarf (WD) mass and the rate at which it accretes mass from its donor. One of the advancements in this field is the understanding that the occurrence of a nova eruption depends on the presence of heavy elements in the envelope, and that the concentration of these elements is highly dependent on the time allotted for accretion. This results in many features of the eruption being correlated with the mass fractions of heavy elements in the ejected material, however, the accreted material is always assumed to be of solar metallicity. Here, we explored the entire range of accretion rates on to a 1.25 $\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ WD for two cases of highly enriched accreted material and find enrichment to have an influence on certain features for high accretion rates, while the effect of enrichment on low accretion rates is negligible. We further find that the ignition of the thermonuclear runaway which is known to be dependent on the accumulation of a critical mass, is actually dependent on the accumulation of a critical amount of heavy elements.

Episodic mass transfer: A trigger for nova outbursts?

Abstract:High resolution spectra of postoutburst novae show multiple components of ejected gas that are kinematically distinct. We interpret the observations in terms of episodes of enhanced mass transfer originating from the secondary star that result in the formation of discrete components of circumbinary gas and accretion onto the WD that trigger nova outbursts. In this picture the concordance between absorption line velocities and emission line widths in most novae occurs as a result of the collision of the expanding nova ejecta with a larger mass of surrounding circumbinary gas. One implication of this model is that much of the accreted gas remains on the WD, leading to a secular increase in WD mass over each outburst event. Alternative scenarios to explain nova spectral evolution are possible that do not invoke circumbinary gas and a possible test of different models is proposed.

Internal Conditions of Accreting White Dwarfs

Abstract:We explain the physics of compressional heating of the deep interior of an accreting white dwarf (WD) at accretion rates low enough so that the accumulated hydrogen burns unstably and initiates a classical nova (CN). In this limit, the WD core temperature (T_c) reaches an equilibrium value (T_c,eq) after accreting an amount of mass much less than the WD's mass. Once this equilibrium is reached, the compressional heating from within the envelope exits the surface. This equilibrium yields useful relations between the WD surface temperature, accretion rate and mass that can be employed to measure accretion rates from observed WD effective temperatures, thus testing binary evolution models for cataclysmic variables.

Abstract:Interacting binaries in which a white dwarf accretes material from a companion—cataclysmic variables (CVs) in which the mass donor is a Roche-lobe filling star on or near the main sequence, and symbiotic stars in which the mass donor is a late type giant—are relatively commonplace. They display a wide range of behaviors in the optical, X-rays, and other wavelengths, which still often baffle observers and theorists alike. Here I review the existing body of research on X-ray emissions from these objects for the benefits of both experts and newcomers to the field. I provide introductions to the past and current X-ray observatories, the types of known X-ray emissions from these objects, and the data analysis techniques relevant to this field. I then summarize of our knowledge regarding the X-ray emissions from magnetic CVs, non-magnetic CVs and symbiotic stars, and novae in eruption. I also discuss space density and the X-ray luminosity functions of these binaries and their contribution to the integrated X-ray emission from the Galaxy. I then discuss open questions and future prospects.
