Abstract:A virtual string is a scheme of self-intersections of a closed curve on a surface. We introduce virtual strings and study their geometric properties and homotopy invariants. We also discuss connections between virtual strings, Gauss words, and virtual knots.

Abstract:Virtual knots arise in the study of Gauss diagrams and Vassiliev invariants of usual knots. The group of virtual braids on n strings VB n and its Burau representation to GL n Z[t,t -1 ] also can be considered. The homological properties of the series of groups VB n and its Burau representation are studied. The following splitting of infinite loop spaces is proved for the plus-construction of the classifying space of the virtual braid group on the infinite number of strings: [Formula: see text] where Y is an infinite loop space. Connections with K * Z are discussed.

Abstract:We discuss Vassiliev invariants for virtual knots, expanding upon the theory of quantum virtual knot invariants developed in [1] . In particular, following the theory of quantum invariants we work with 'rotational' virtual knots. We define chord diagrams, weight systems, and give examples of Lie algebra weight systems of rotational virtual knots. We end with a discussion of extended quantum invariants, which capture information that standard quantum invariants of rotational virtuals cannot.

Abstract:We use virtual neighborhood technique to establish GW-invariants, Quantum cohomology, equivariant GW-invariants, equivariant quantum cohomology and Floer cohomology for general symplectic manifold. We also establish GW-invariants for a family of symplectic manifolds. As a consequence, we prove Arnold conjecture for nondegenerate Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms.

Abstract:For classical knots, there is a concept of (semi)meander diagrams; in this short note we generalize this concept to virtual knots and prove that the classes of meander and semimeander diagrams are universal (this was known for classical knots). We also introduce a new class of invariants for virtual knots -- virtual $k$-arc crossing numbers.

Abstract:The motivation for this work is to construct a map from classical knots to virtual ones. What we get in the paper is a series of maps from knots in the full torus (thickened torus) to flat-virtual knots. We give definition of flat-virtual knots and presents Alexander-like polynomial and (picture-valued) Kauffman bracket for them.

Abstract:We formulate conjectures generalizing some known results to the category of virtual Legendrian knots. This includes statements relating virtual Legendrian knots to ordinary Legendrian knots, non-existence of positive virtual Legendrian self isotopy for the class of the fiber of $ST^*M$ and the conjectural relation of virtual Legendrian isotopy to causality in generalized spacetimes. We prove the conjectures in the case of $2$-dimensional $M$ and $(2+1)$-dimensional spacetimes. We also formulate and prove the version of the Arnold's $4$ cusp conjecture for virtual isotopies.

On Free Knots and Links

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

Abstract:We introduce a method of constructing the virtual cycle of any scheme associated with a tangent-obstruction complex. We apply this method to constructing the virtual moduli cycle of the moduli of stable maps from n-pointed genus g curves to any smooth projective variety. As an application, we give an algebraic definition of GW-invariants for any smooth projective variety.

Abstract:Virtual knot theory is a generalization of knot theory which is based on Gauss chord diagrams and link diagrams on closed oriented surfaces. A twisted knot is a generalization of a virtual knot, which corresponds to a link diagram on a possibly non-orientable surface. In this paper, we discuss an invariant of twisted links which is obtained from the JKSS invariant of virtual links by use of double coverings. We also discuss some properties of double covering diagrams.

Abstract:Cobordism of virtual string links on $n$ strands is a combinatorial generalization of link cobordism. There exists a bijection between virtual string links up to cobordisms and elements of the group $\mathbb{Z}^{n(n-1)}$. This paper also shows that virtual string links up to unwelded equivalence are classified by those groups. Finally, the related theory of welded string link cobordism is defined herein and shown to be trivial for string links with one component.

Abstract:Virtual knot theory, introduced by Kauffman, is a generalization of classical knot theory of interest because its finite-type invariant theory is potentially a topological interpretation of Etingof and Kazhdan's theory of quantization of Lie bi-algebras. Classical knots inject into virtual knots, and flat virtual knots is the quotient of virtual knots which equates the real positive and negative crossings, and in this sense is complementary to classical knot theory within virtual knot theory. We completely classify flat virtual tangles with no closed components (pure tangles). This classification can be used as an invariant on virtual pure tangles and virtual braids.

New invariants for virtual knots via spanning surfaces

Abstract:We define three different types of spanning surfaces for knots in thickened surfaces. We use these to introduce new Seifert matrices, Alexander-type polynomials, genera, and a signature invariant. One of these Alexander polynomials extends to virtual knots and can obstruct a virtual knot from being classical. Furthermore, it can distinguish a knot in a thickened surface from its mirror up to isotopy. We also propose several constructions of Heegaard Floer homology for knots in thickened surfaces, and give examples why they are not stabilization invariant. However, we can define Floer homology for virtual knots by taking a minimal genus representative. Finally, we use the Behrens-Golla $\delta$-invariant to obstruct a knot from being a stabilization of another.

Abstract:For a virtual $n$-link $K$, we define a new virtual link $VD(K)$, which is invariant under virtual equivalence of $K$. The Dehn space of $VD(K)$, which we denote $DD(K)$, therefore has a homotopy type which is an invariant of $K$. We show that the quandle and even the fundamental group of this space are able to detect the virtual trefoil. We also consider applications to higher-dimensional virtual links.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the enumeration of virtual numbers of immersed nodal curves along certain Calabi-Yau K3 fibrations. By using the concept of cosmic strings, we verify the modularity conjeture of the generating function of immersed nodal curves from String theory (Harvey-Moore). Based on the theory defining virtual numbers of nodal curves on algebraic surface (applying to a pencil of lattice polarized K3), a mathematical definition of virtual numbers of immersed rational curves (so-called Gopakumar-Vafa numbers) for Calabi-Yau K3 fibrations is given and it is shown to match up with string theory prediction.

Abstract:We determine the lower central series of the virtual braid group VBn and of the kernels of two different projections of VBn in Sn: the normal closure of the Artin braid group Bn, that we will denote by Hn, and the so-called virtual pure braid group VPn, which is related to Yang Baxter equation. We describe relations between Hn and VPn and we provide a connection between virtual pure braids and the finite type invariant theory for virtual knots defined by Goussarov, Polyak and Viro.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the virtual string links via a probabilistic interpretation. This representation can be used to distinguish some virtual string links from classical string links. In order to study the algebraic structure behind this probabilistic interpretation we introduce the notion of virtual flat biquandle. Abstract:This paper introduces two virtual knot theory “analogues” of a well-known family of invariants for knots in thickened surfaces: the Grishanov–Vassiliev finite-type invariants of order two. The first, called the three loop isotopy invariant, is an invariant of virtual knots while the second, called the three loop framed isotopy invariant, is a regular isotopy invariant of framed virtual knots. The properties of these invariants are investigated at length. In addition, we make precise the informal notion of “analogue”. Using this formal definition, it is proved that a generalized three loop invariant is a virtual knot theory analogue of a generalization of the Grishanov–Vassiliev invariants of order two.

Abstract:This paper is an exposition of the new subject of String Topology. We present an introduction to this exciting new area, as well as a survey of some of the latest developments, and our views about future directions of research. We begin with reviewing the seminal paper of Chas and Sullivan, which started String Topology by introducing a BV-algebra structure on the homology of a loop space of a manifold, then discuss the homotopy theoretic approach to String Topology, using the Thom-Pontrjagin construction, the cacti operad, and fat graphs. We review quantum field theories and indicate how string topology fits into the general picture. Other topics include an open-closed version of string topology, a Morse theoretic interpretation, relation to Gromov-Witten invariants, and "brane'' topology, which deals with sphere spaces. The paper is a joint account of the lecture series given by each of us at the 2003 Summer School on String Topology and Hochschild Homology in Almeria, Spain.
