Abstract:The ouflowing proper motions of fifteen knots in the dominant northwestern lobe of the high-excitation poly-polar planetary nebula NGC 6302 have been determined by comparing their positions relative to those of faint stars in an image taken at the San Pedro Martir Observatory in 2007 to those in a South African Astronomical Observatory archival plate obtained by Evans in 1956. The Hubble-type expansion of this lobe is now directly confirmed in a model independent way from these measurements. Furthermore, an unambiguous distance to NGC 6302 of 1.17 +/- 0.14 kpc is now determined. Also all the velocity vectors of the fifteen knots (and two others) point back to the central source. An eruptive event from within the central torus, approximately 2200 years previously must have created the high speed lobes of NGC 6302.

Abstract:NGC 7009 is a fascinating example of a high‐excitation, elliptical planetary nebula (PN) containing circumnebular rings, and FLIERs and jets along the major axis. We present visual spectroscopy along multiple position angles through the nucleus, taken with the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional (Mexico); mid‐infrared (MIR) spectroscopy and imaging acquired using the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and Spitzer Space Telescope (SST), and narrow‐band imaging obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The data show that the mid‐infrared (MIR) continuum is dominated by a broad ≈100 K continuum, and a strong excess attributable to crystalline silicate emission. The primary peaks in this excess are similar to those observed in Forsterite and clino‐ and ortho‐enstatite. The MIR images, by contrast, appear to be dominated by ionic transitions, with the 8.991 μm transition of [Ar iii] being important in the 8.0‐μm band. The morphology and size of the envelope are found to vary with wavelength, with the largest dimensions occurring at 8.0 μm – a trend which is also reflected in an increase in the 8.0 μm/4.5 μm and 5.8 μm/4.5 μm ratios with distance from the nucleus. The visual spectroscopy permits us to map density and temperature throughout the shell, and confirm that the lowest values of ne are located close to the ansae, where densities appear to be of the order of 900–2600 cm−3. We provide mean line intensities for 116 transitions in six regions of the shell, and use mapping to confirm a systematic increase in excitation in the outer portions of the envelope. We finally use the ground‐based spectroscopy, and ratioing of HST images to investigate the presence of shocks in the ansae and interior envelope. It is concluded that line ratios in the ansae may be partially consistent with shock excitation, although these features are primarily dominated by photoionization. We also note evidence for shock excitation at the limits of the interior elliptical shell, and for multiple bow‐shock structures centred upon the ansae. The orientations of the easterly bow‐shocks may have varied over time, indicating precession of the collimating engine at a rate of deg yr−1, whilst the outward splaying of the westerly ‘jet’ appears consistent with shock refraction modelling. We finally note that HST observations of the halo rings show them to have widths of the order of ∼1–3 arcsec, and steep changes in surface brightness consistent with local shock activity.

Differential Proper-Motion Measurements of The Cygnus Egg Nebula: The Presence of Equatorial Outflow

Abstract:We present the results of differential proper-motion analyses of the Egg Nebula (RAFGL 2688, V1610 Cyg) based on the archived two-epoch optical data taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. First, we determined that the polarization characteristics of the Egg Nebula is influenced by the higher optical depth of the central regions of the nebula (i.e., the "dustsphere" of about 1000 AU radius), causing the nebula illuminated in two steps -- the direct starlight is first channeled into bipolar cavities and then scattered off to the rest of the nebula. We then measured the amount of motion of local structures and the signature concentric arcs by determining their relative shifts over the 7.25 yr interval. Based on our analysis, which does not rely on the single-scattering assumption, we concluded that the lobes have been excavated by a linear expansion along the bipolar axis for the past 400 yr, while the concentric arcs have been generated continuously and moving out radially at about 10 km/s for the past 5,500 yr, and there appears to be a colatitudinally-increasing trend in the radial expansion velocity field of the concentric arcs. There exist numerical investigations into the mass-loss modulation by the central binary system, which predict such a colatitudinally-increasing expansion velocity field in the spiral-shock trails of the mass-loss ejecta. Therefore, the Egg Nebula may represent a rare edge-on case of the binary-modulated circumstellar environs, corroborating the previous theoretical predictions.

Proper-Motion Measurements of the Cygnus Egg Nebula

Abstract:We present the results of proper-motion measurements of the dust shell structure in the Egg Nebula (AFGL 2688, CRL 2688, V1610 Cyg), based on the archived two-epoch imaging-polarimetry data in the 2 micron band taken with NICMOS on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. We measured the amount of motions of local structures in the nebula by determining their relative shifts over an interval of 5.5 years. The dynamical age of the nebula is found to be roughly 350 years based on the overall motion of the nebula that exhibits a Hubble-law-esque linear relation between the measured proper motion and the projected radial distance from the origin of the expansion. By adopting the de-projected velocity of 45 km/s at the tips of the bipolar lobes, our proper-motion measurements indicate that the distance to the Egg Nebula is about 420 pc and that the lobes are inclined at 7.7 degrees with respect to the plane of the sky. The refined distance estimate yields the luminosity of the central star of 3.3 x 10^3 L_sun, the total shell mass of 1.2 M_sun, and the mass loss rate (the upper limit) of 3.6 x 10^(-3) M_sun/yr. Assuming 0.6 M_sun central post-AGB stellar mass, the initial mass of the Egg is 1.8 M_sun. Upon analysis, we also discovered that the central star of the Egg Nebula has proper motion of its own at the rate of (14, -10) mas/yr.

Abstract:We present proper motion measurements for more than $0.55$ million main-sequence stars, by comparing astrometric positions of matched stars between the multi-band imaging datasets from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Survey and the SDSS Stripe 82. In doing this we use $3$ million galaxies to recalibrate the astrometry and set up a common reference frame between the two catalogues. The exquisite depth and the nearly $12$ years of time baseline between HSC and SDSS enable high-precision measurements of statistical proper motions for stars down to $i\simeq 24$. A validation of our method is demonstrated by the agreement with the $Gaia$ proper motions, to the precision better than $0.1$ mas yr$^{-1}$. To retain the precision, we make a correction of the subtle effects due to the differential chromatic refraction in the SDSS images based on the comparison with the $Gaia$ proper motions against colour of stars, which is validated using the SDSS spectroscopic quasars. Combining with the photometric distance estimates for individual stars based on the precise HSC photometry, we show a significant detection of the net proper motions for stars in each bin of distance out to $100$ kpc. The two-component tangential velocities after subtracting the apparent motions due to our own motion display rich phase-space structures including a clear signature of the Sagittarius stream in the halo region of distance range $[10,\ 35]$ kpc. We also measure the tangential velocity dispersion in the distance range $5-20$ kpc and find that the data are consistent with a constant isotropic dispersion of $80\pm 10\ {\rm km/s}$. More distant stars appear to have random motions with respect to the Galactic centre on average.
The OSACA Database and a Kinematic Analysis of Stars in the Solar Neighborhood

Abstract:We transformed radial velocities compiled from more than 1400 published sources, including the Geneva--Copenhagen survey of the solar neighborhood (CORAVEL-CfA), into a uniform system based on the radial velocities of 854 standard stars in our list. This enabled us to calculate the average weighted radial velocities for more than 25~000 HIPPARCOS stars located in the local Galactic spiral arm (Orion arm) with a median error of +-1 km/s. We use these radial velocities together with the stars' coordinates, parallaxes, and proper motions to determine their Galactic coordinates and space velocities. These quantities, along with other parameters of the stars, are available from the continuously updated Orion Spiral Arm CAtalogue (OSACA) and the associated database. We perform a kinematic analysis of the stars by applying an Ogorodnikov-Milne model to the OSACA data. The kinematics of the nearest single and multiple main-sequence stars differ substantially. We used distant (r\approx 0.2 kpc) stars of mixed spectral composition to estimate the angular velocity of the Galactic rotation -25.7+-1.2 km/s/kpc, and the vertex deviation,l=13+-2 degrees, and detect a negative K effect. This negative K effect is most conspicuous in the motion of A0-A5 giants, and is equal to K=-13.1+-2.0 km/s/kpc.

Abstract:We have conducted a wide-field optical survey of NGC 5128 (Cen A), the nearest large elliptical galaxy (3.5 Mpc). From UBVRI imaging and spectroscopic follow-up, we have identified and obtained kinematics for 125 new globular clusters out to a projected radius of 40 kpc. We also extend our survey of field star kinematics in NGC 5128, and now possess a total of 736 radial velocities for planetary nebulae out to a projected radius of 80 kpc.•The PNe sample along the photometric major axis shows significant rotational support out to 80 kpc.•The blue globular clusters seem to possess little or no angular momentum.•The kinematics of the red globular cluster sample show some evidence for rotation around an axis common to that of the field stars.
Star Proper Motions Based on Two-epoch Observations from the SDSS and DESI Imaging Surveys

Abstract:In this study, we present the construction of a new proper motion catalog utilizing the photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) imaging surveys, with a median time baseline of about 13 years. To mitigate systematic errors, the DESI galaxy positions are employed to establish a reference frame and to correct the position-, magnitude-, and color-dependent discrepancies between SDSS and DESI imaging datasets. Spanning 12,589 square degrees, the catalog encompasses about 206.6 million non-Gaia objects down to $m_r \sim$ 23. Based on 734k quasars, the assessment of the global systematic errors in DESI-SDSS proper motion catalog yields values of 0.14 mas yr$^{-1}$ for $\mu_{\alpha *}$ and 0.11 mas yr$^{-1}$ for $\mu_{\delta}$. The catalog exhibits a precision surpassing 3.7 mas yr$^{-1}$, albeit varying with position, color, and magnitude. An additional evaluation employing approximately 5,300 distant star samples yields an overall precision of approximately 3.0 and 2.9 mas yr$^{-1}$ for $\mu_{\alpha *}$ and $\mu_{\delta}$, respectively. Further comparisons with proper motions from SDSS Stripe 82 reveal a strong consistency between the two datasets. As a practical application, we utilize fainter non-Gaia objects in our catalog to update the proper motions of 17 star clusters. The resulting proper motions for these clusters exhibit excellent consistency with those derived from Gaia data. Our proper motion measurements, characterized by a deeper limiting magnitude, stands as a valuable complement to the Gaia dataset. The catalog is publicly available at \url{

Rummaging inside the Eskimo's parka: Variable asymmetric PN fast wind and a binary nucleus?

Abstract:We report on high-resolution optical time-series spectroscopy of the central star of the `Eskimo' planetary nebula NGC~2392. Datasets were secured with the ESO 2.3m in 2006 March and CFHT 3.6m in 2010 March to diagnose the fast wind and photospheric properties of the central star. The HeI and HeII recombination lines reveal evidence for clumping and temporal structures in the fast wind that are erratically variable on timescales down to ~ 30 min. (i.e. comparable to the characteristic wind flow time). We highlight changes in the overall morphology of the wind lines that cannot plausibly be explained by line-synthesis model predictions with a spherically homogeneous wind. Additionally we present evidence that the UV line profile morphologies support the notion of a high-speed, high-ionization polar wind in NGC~2392. Analyses of deep-seated, near-photospheric absorption lines reveals evidence for low-amplitude radial velocity shifts. Fourier analysis points tentatively to a ~ 0.12-d modulation in the radial velocities, independently evident in the ESO and CFHT data. We conclude that the overall spectroscopic properties support the notion of a (high inclination) binary nucleus in NGC~2392 and an asymmetric fast wind.

Abstract:Until the recent advent of Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and deep multi-object spectroscopy, it has been difficult to obtain 6D phase space information for large numbers of stars beyond 4 kpc, in particular towards the Galactic Centre, where dust and crowding are significant. We combine line-of-sight velocities from the Abundances and Radial velocity Galactic Origins Survey (ARGOS) with proper motions from Gaia DR2 to obtain a sample of similar to 7000 red clump stars with 3D velocities. We perform a large-scale stellar kinematics study of the Milky Way bulge to characterize the bulge velocity ellipsoids in 20 fields. The tilt of the major-axis of the velocity ellipsoid in the radial-longitudinal velocity plane, or vertex deviation, is characteristic of non-axisymmetric systems and a significant tilt is a robust indicator of non-axisymmetry or bar presence. We compare the observations to the predicted kinematics of an N-body boxy-bulge model formed from dynamical instabilities. In the model, the l(v) values are strongly correlated with the angle (alpha) between the bulge major-axis and the Sun-Galactic centre line of sight. We use a maximum likelihood method to obtain an independent measurement of alpha, from bulge stellar kinematics alone, performing a robust error analysis. The most likely value of a given our model is alpha = (29 +/- 3)degrees, with an additional systematic uncertainty due to comparison with one specific model. In Baade's window, the metal-rich stars display a larger vertex deviation (lv = -40 degrees) than the metal-poor stars (l(v) = 10 degrees) but we do not detect significant l(v)-metallicity trends in the other fields.
Updated Proper Motion of the Neutron Star in the Supernova Remnant Cassiopeia A

Abstract:In this paper, we present updated estimates of the velocity of the neutron star (NS) in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A using over two decades of Chandra observations. We use two methods: (1) recording the NS positions from dozens of Chandra observations, including the astrometric uncertainty estimates on the data points, but not correcting the astrometry of the observations; and (2) correcting the astrometry of the 13 Chandra observations that have a sufficient number of point sources with identified Gaia counterparts. For method #1, we observe a heliocentric velocity of 275 ± 121 km s −1 , with an angle of 177° ± 22° east of north. For method #2, we observe a heliocentric velocity of 436 ± 89 km s −1 at an angle of 158° ± 12°. Correcting for galactic rotation and the Sun's peculiar motion decreases these estimates to 256 km s −1 at 167° and 433 km s −1 at 151°, respectively. Both of our estimates match with the explosion-center-estimated velocity of ∼350 km s −1 and the previous 10 yr baseline proper-motion measurement of 570 ± 260 km s −1 , but our use of additional data over a longer baseline has led to a smaller uncertainty by a factor of 2–3. Our estimates rule out velocities ≳600 km s −1 and better match with simulations of Cassiopeia A that include NS kick mechanisms.

HST Proper Motion of Andromeda III: Another Satellite Co-orbiting The M31 Satellite Plane

Abstract:We measure the absolute proper motion of Andromeda III using ACS/WFC and WFPC2 exposures spanning an unprecedented 22-year time baseline. The WFPC2 exposures have been processed using a deep-learning centering procedure recently developed as well as an improved astrometric calibration of the camera. The absolute proper motion zero point is given by 98 galaxies and 16 Gaia EDR3 stars. The resulting proper motion is $(\mu_{\alpha} , \mu_{\delta}) = (-10.5\pm12.5, 47.5\pm12.5)~\mu$as yr$^{-1}$. We perform an orbit analysis of And III using two estimates of M31's mass and proper motion. We find that And III's orbit is consistent with dynamical membership to the Great Plane of Andromeda system of satellites although with some looser alignment compared to the previous two satellites NGC 147 and NGC 185. And III is bound to M31 if M31's mass is $M_{\mathrm{vir}}\geq 1.5\times10^{12}\,M_{\odot}$.

Feeding Versus Feedback in AGN from Near-Infrared IFU Observations XI: NGC 2110

Abstract:We present a two-dimensional mapping of the gas flux distributions, as well as of the gas and stellar kinematics in the inner 220 pc of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2110, using K-band integral field spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini NIFS at a spatial resolution of ~24pc and spectral resolution of ~40 km/s. The H2 emission extends over the whole field-of-view and is attributed to heating by X-rays from the AGN and/or by shocks, while the Brgamma emission is restricted to a bi-polar region extending along the South-East-North-West direction. The masses of the warm molecular gas and of the ionized gas are ~1.4x10^3 Msun and ~1.8x10^6 Msun, respectively. The stellar kinematics present velocity dispersions reaching 250km/s and a rotation pattern reaching an amplitude of 200 km/s. The gas velocity fields present a similar rotation pattern but also additional components that we attribute to inflows and outflows most clearly observed in the molecular gas emission. The inflows are observed beyond the inner 70 pc and are associated to a spiral arm seen in blueshift to the North-East and another in redshift to the South-West. We have estimated a mass inflow rate in warm molecular gas of ~4.6x10^-4 Msun/year. Within the inner 70 pc, another kinematic component is observed in the H2 emission that can be interpreted as due to a bipolar nuclear outflow oriented along the East-West direction, with a mass-outflow rate of ~4.3x10^-4 Msun/year in warm H2.

Planetary Nebula NGC 2818: Revealing its complex 3D morphology

Abstract:We carry out an advanced morpho-kinematic analysis of the Planetary Nebula (PN) NGC 2818, whose complex morphology is described by a basic bipolar component, filamentary structures and a knotty central region. We performed an upgrated 3D Morpho-kinematic (MK) model by employing the SHAPE software, combining for the first time in PNe optical 2D spatially resolved echelle spectra and Fabry-Perot data cubes. The best-fitting 3D model of NGC 2818 successfully reconstructs the main morphology, considering one bipolar component, radial filamentary structures, and an equatorial component as the geometrical locus of the group of cometary knots. The model shows that the equatorial component has the lower expansion velocity of the system at 70 $\pm$ 20 km/s. The velocity of the bipolar component is 120 $\pm$ 20 km/s, while all the filamentary structures were found to expand at higher velocities of 180 $\pm$ 20 km/s. Moreover, Fabry-Perot data revealed for the first time a north-eastern filament expanding at a mean velocity of 80 $\pm$ 20 km/s, while its equivalent counterpart in the southwestern region was confirmed by a new detected substructure in the echelle data. A new detected knotty structure at velocity -40 $\pm$ 20 km/s is also reported, as expelled material from the fragmented eastern lobe of the nebula. We interpret the overall structure of NGC 2818 as the result of the evolution of a binary system that underwent the common envelope phase, in conjunction with the ejections of a magnetized jet, misaligned with respect to the symmetry axis of the bipolar/elliptical shell.

Cluster kinematics and stellar rotation in NGC 419 with MUSE and adaptive optics

Abstract:We present adaptive optics (AO) assisted integral-field spectroscopy of the intermediate-age star cluster NGC 419 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. By investigating the cluster dynamics and the rotation properties of main sequence turn-off stars (MSTO), we demonstrate the power of AO-fed MUSE observations for this class of objects. Based on 1 049 radial velocity measurements, we determine a dynamical cluster mass of 1.4+/-0.2x10^5 M_sun and a dynamical mass-to-light ratio of 0.67+/-0.08, marginally higher than simple stellar population predictions for a Kroupa initial mass function. A stacking analysis of spectra at both sides of the extended MSTO reveals significant rotational broadening. Our analysis further provides tentative evidence that red MSTO stars rotate faster than their blue counterparts. We find average V sin i values of 87+/-16 km/s and 130+/-22 km/s for blue and red MSTO stars, respectively. Potential systematic effects due to the low spectral resolution of MUSE can reach 30 km/s but the difference in V sin i between the populations is unlikely to be affected.

A Morpho-Kinematic Study of the Enigmatic Emission Nebula NGC 6164/5 Surrounding the Magnetic O-type Star HD 148937

Abstract:HD 148937 is a peculiar massive star (Of?p) with a strong magnetic field (1kG). The hourglass-shaped emission nebula NGC 6164/5 surrounds this star. This nebula is presumed to originate from episodic mass-loss events of the central O-type star, but the detailed formation mechanism is not yet well understood. Grasping its three-dimensional structure is essential to uncover the origin of this nebula. Here we report the high-resolution multi-object spectroscopic observation of NGC 6164/5 using the GIRAFFE on the 8.2m Very Large Telescope. Integrated intensity maps constructed from several spectral lines delineate well the overall shape of this nebula, such as the two bright lobes and the inner gas region. The position-velocity diagrams show that the two bright lobes are found to be redshifted and blueshifted, respectively, while the inner region has multiple layers. We consider a geometric model composed of a bilateral outflow harboring nitrogen-enriched knots and expanding inner shells. Its spectral features are then simulated by using a Monte-Carlo radiative transfer technique for different sets of velocities. Some position-velocity diagrams from simulations are very similar to the observed ones. According to the model that best reproduces the observational data, the two bright lobes and the nitrogen-enriched knots are moving away from HD 148937 at about 120 km s$^{-1}$. Their minimum kinematic age is estimated to be about 7,500 years. We discuss possible formation mechanisms of this nebula in the context of binary interaction.

Abstract:Hu\,1-2 is a planetary nebula that contains an isolated knot located northwestern of the main nebula, which could be related to a collimated outflow. We present a subsarcsecond H$\alpha$+[N\,{\sc ii}] image and a high-resolution, long-slit spectrum of Hu\,1-2 that allow us to identify the southeastern counterpart of the northwestern knot and to establish their high velocity ($>$ 340 km\,s$^{-1}$), collimated bipolar outflow nature. The detection of the northwestern knot in POSS red plates allows us to carry out a proper motion analysis by combining three POSS red plates and two narrow-band H$\alpha$+[N\,{\sc ii}] CCD images, with a time baseline of $\simeq$ 57 yr. A proper motion of 20 $\pm$ 6\,mas\,yr$^{-1}$ along position angle 312$^{\circ}$ $\pm$ 15$^{\circ}$, and a dynamical age of 1375$^{+590}$\llap{$_{-320}$}\,yr are obtained for the bipolar outflow. The measured proper motion and the spatio-kinematical properties of the bipolar outflow yield a lower limit of 2.7\,kpc for the distance to Hu\,1-2.

Abstract:We report the gross properties of the velocity field of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 3367. The following values were found: inclination with respect to the plane of the sky, i=30 deg; position angle (PA) of receding semi major axis PA=51 and systemic velocity V(sys)=3032 km/s. Large velocity dispersion are observed of upt o 120 km/s in the nuclear region, of up to 70 km/s near the eastern bright sources just beyond the edge of the stellar bar where three spiral arms seem to start and in the western bright sources at about 10 kpc. Deviations from normal circular velocities are observed from all the disk but mainly from the semi circle formed by the string of south western Halpha sources. An estimate of the dynamical mass is M(dyn)=2x10^11 Msolar.

Abstract:We present adaptive optics spectro-imaging observations of the RW Aur jet in optical forbidden lines, at an angular resolution of 0.4 arcsec. Comparison with HST data taken 2 years later shows that proper motions in the blueshifted and redshifted lobes are in the same ratio as their radial velocities, a direct proof that the velocity asymmetry in this jet is real and not an emissivity effect. The inferred jet inclination to the line of sight is i = 46 +/- 3 degrees. The inner knot spacing appears best explained by time variability with at least two modes: one irregular and asymmetric (possibly random) on timescales of <3-10 yr, and another more regular with ~ 20 yr period. We also report indirect evidence for correlated velocity and excitation gradients in the redshifted lobe, possibly related to the blue/red velocity and brightness asymmetry in this system.

Abstract:HD 148937 is a peculiar massive star (Of?p) with a strong magnetic field (1 kG). The hourglass-shaped emission nebula NGC 6164/5 surrounds this star. This nebula is presumed to originate from episodic mass-loss events of the central O-type star, but the detailed formation mechanism is not yet well understood. Grasping its three-dimensional structure is essential to uncovering the origin of this nebula. Here we report the high-resolution multiobject spectroscopic observations of NGC 6164/5 using the GIRAFFE on the 8.2 m Very Large Telescope. Integrated intensity maps constructed from several spectral lines delineate well the overall shape of this nebula, such as the two bright lobes and the inner gas region. The position–velocity diagrams show that the two bright lobes are found to be redshifted and blueshifted, respectively, while the inner region has multiple layers. We consider a geometric model composed of a bilateral outflow harboring nitrogen-enriched knots and expanding inner shells. Its spectral features are then simulated by using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer technique for different sets of velocities.
