Abstract:In this paper, we estimate the number of event topologies that have the potential to be produced in $pp$ collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) without violating kinematic and other constraints. We use numerical calculations and combinatorics, guided by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of Standard Model (SM) processes. Then, we set the upper limit on the probability that new physics may escape detection, assuming a model-agnostic approach. The calculated probability is unexpectedly large, and the fact that the LHC has not found new physics until now is not entirely surprising. We argue that the optimal direction for maximizing the chances of finding new physics is to use unsupervised machine learning for anomaly detection or algorithms designed for event classification.

Abstract:Neutral long-lived particles (LLPs) are highly motivated by many BSM scenarios, such as theories of supersymmetry, baryogenesis, and neutral naturalness, and present both tremendous discovery opportunities and experimental challenges for the LHC. A major bottleneck for current LLP searches is the prediction of SM backgrounds, which are often impossible to simulate accurately. In this paper, we propose a general strategy for obtaining differential, data-driven background estimates in LLP searches, thereby notably extending the range of LLP masses and lifetimes that can be discovered at the LHC. We focus on LLPs decaying in the ATLAS Muon System, where triggers providing both signal and control samples are available at the LHC Run-2. While many existing searches require two displaced decays, a detailed knowledge of backgrounds will allow for very inclusive searches that require just one detected LLP decay. As we demonstrate for the $h \to X X$ signal model of LLP pair production in exotic Higgs decays, this results in dramatic sensitivity improvements for proper lifetimes $\gtrsim 10$ m. In theories of Neutral Naturalness, this extends reach to glueball masses far below the $\bar b b$ threshold. Our strategy readily generalizes to other signal models, and other detector subsystems. This framework therefore lends itself to the development of a systematic, model-independent LLP search program, in analogy to the highly successful simplified-model framework of prompt searches.

Abstract:In this article, we present the strategy of analysis for searching the dark matter particles produced in association with the Standard Model Higgs boson ( h ) predicted within the "2HDM + a" model in the CMS (LHC) experiment. The strategy is optimized for analysis using the 2018 data for pp collisions at 13 TeV corresponding to an integral luminosity of ~60 fb –1 . It is shown that the maximum sensitivity to the expected signal can be achieved by introducing two categories of analysis corresponding to large and small values of the transverse momentum of the h boson.

Abstract:Supersymmetry (SUSY) provides elegant solutions to several problems in the Standard Model and searches for SUSY particles are an important component of the LHC physics program. The latest results from electroweak and strong SUSY searches are reported here, conducted by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The searches target multiple final states and different assumptions about the decay mode of the produced SUSY particles, including searches for both R-parity conserving models and R-parity violating models, and their possible connections with the recent observation of the flavour and muon g-2 anomalies. The talk will also highlight the employment of novel analysis techniques, including advanced machine learning techniques and special object reconstruction, that are necessary for many of these analyses to extend the sensitivity reach to challenging regions of the phase space.

Abstract:A bstract We propose a new strategy to look for long-lived particles (LLP) at the LHC. The LLPs are produced at one experiment, but its decay products are detected by a detector at another experiment. We use a confining Hidden Valley scenario as a benchmark. Through showering and hadronization, the multiplicity of hidden mesons can be large, and their decay products, dimuon as chosen in this study, are typically too soft to pass triggers in traditional LHC searches. We find the best acceptance is achieved if we produce LLPs at collision points at the LHCb and ALICE experiments, and use the muon chamber of ATLAS for detection. This new search is cost-efficient since it does not require a new detector to be built. Meanwhile, it can provide coverage of interesting parameter space, which is complementary to other proposed LLP searches.

Abstract:Particles beyond the Standard Model can generally have life times that are long compared to Standard Model particles at the weak scale. When produced at the Large Hadron Collider, such long-lived particles can decay far from the primary interaction vertex and possibly themselves interact with the detector material, leading to a wide variety of detector signatures. Such long- lived particle signatures are distinctly different from those associated with searches for promptly decaying beyond-the-Standard Model particles that constitute the bulk of searches for new physics at the Large Hadron Collider, often requiring dedicated analysis and reconstruction techniques. This contribution will provide an overview for searches for long-lived particles performed by the ATLAS Collaboration and present latest results using 13 TeV proton–proton collision data from Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider.

We provide an overview of a selected number of searches for new fermions and new bosons with the ATLAS and CMS experiments. Abstract:We propose a search strategy at the HL-LHC for a new neutral particle $X$ that couples to $W$-bosons, using the process $p p \rightarrow W^{\pm} X (\rightarrow W^{+} W^{-})$ with a tri-$W$-boson final state. Focusing on events with two same-sign leptonic $W$-boson decays into muons and a hadronically decaying $W$-boson, our method leverages the enhanced signal-to-background discrimination achieved through a machine-learning-based multivariate analysis. Using the heavy photophobic axion-like particle (ALP) as a benchmark, we evaluate the discovery sensitivities on both production cross section times branching ratio $\sigma(p p \rightarrow W^{\pm} X) \times \textrm{Br}(X \rightarrow W^{+} W^{-})$ and the coupling $g_{aWW}$ for the particle mass over a wide range of 170-3000 GeV at the HL-LHC with center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV and integrated luminosity $\mathcal{L} = 3$ $\textrm{ab}^{-1}$. Our results show significant improvements in discovery sensitivity, particularly for masses above 300 GeV, compared to existing limits derived from CMS analyses of Standard Model (SM) tri-$W$-boson production at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. This study demonstrates the potential of advanced selection techniques in probing the coupling of new particles to $W$-bosons and highlights the HL-LHC's capability to explore the physics beyond the SM.

New Long Lived Particles Searches in Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC

Abstract:We show that heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide a promising environment to search for signatures with displaced vertices in well-motivated New Physics scenarios. Compared to proton collisions, they offer several advantages, i) the number of parton level interactions per collision is larger, ii) there is no pile-up, iii) the lower instantaneous luminosity compared to proton collisions allows to operate the LHC experiments with very loose triggers, and iv) there are new production mechanisms that are absent in proton collisions. In the present work we focus on the third point and show that the modification of the triggers alone can increase the number of observable events by orders of magnitude if the long lived particles are predominantly produced with low transverse momentum. Our results show that collisions of ions lighter than lead are well-motivated from the viewpoint of searches for New Physics. We illustrate this for the example of heavy neutrinos in the Neutrino Minimal Standard Model.

Exploiting exotic LHC datasets for long-lived new particle searches

Abstract:Motivated by the expectation that new physics may manifest itself in the form of very heavy new particles, most of the operation time of the LHC is devoted to $pp$ collisions at the highest achievable energies and collision rates. The large collision rates imply tight trigger requirements that include high thresholds on the final-state particles' transverse momenta $p_{T}$ and an intrinsic background in the form of particle pileup produced by different collisions occurring during the same bunch crossing. This strategy is potentially sub-optimal for several well-motivated new physics models where new particles are not particularly heavy and can escape the online selection criteria of the multi-purpose LHC experiments due to their light mass and small coupling. A solution may be offered by complementary datasets that are routinely collected by the LHC experiments. These include heavy ion collisions, low-pileup runs for precision physics, and the so-called 'parking' and 'scouting' datasets. While some of them are motivated by other physics goals, they all have the usage of mild $p_{T}$ thresholds at the trigger-level in common. In this study, we assess the relative merits of these datasets for a representative model whose particular clean signature features long-lived resonances yielding displaced dimuon vertices. We compare the reach across those datasets for a simple analysis, simulating LHC data in Run 2 and Run 3 conditions with the Delphes simulation. We show that the scouting and parking datasets, which afford low-$p_{T}$ trigger thresholds by only using partial detector information and delaying the event reconstruction, respectively, have a reach comparable to the standard $pp$ dataset with conventional thresholds. We also show that heavy ion and low-pileup datasets are far less competitive for this signature.

Abstract:Search for BSM phenomena is one of the fundamental goals of the LHC experiments. Many BSM models foresee long-lived particles which decay far from the production vertex and a big effort has been done both by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations to detect these long-lived particles. A specific, widely studied, example for such searches is made through the measurement of displaced vertices produced by a narrow resonance decaying to a muon pair. This paper will first analyze what has been done so far and will try to evaluate if there are improvements which may allow enhancing the discovery potential at LHC for such particles. The outcome of this work is that while long-lived particles decaying more than 1 cm from the primary vertex have been carefully studied by ATLAS and CMS, the region within a few millimeters from the primary vertex may have been partially neglected. A new approach for searching such resonances, fully based on data, will then be proposed which allows minimizing systematic uncertainties while keeping at a maximum the discovery potentiality for long-lived neutral resonances which decay a few millimeters from the primary vertex.

Digging Deeper for New Physics in the LHC Data

Abstract:In this paper we describe a novel, model-independent technique of "rectangular aggregations" for mining the LHC data for hints of new physics. A typical (CMS) search now has hundreds of signal regions, which can obscure potentially interesting anomalies. Applying our technique to the two CMS jets+MET SUSY searches, we identify a set of previously overlooked $\sim 3\sigma$ excesses. Among these, four excesses survive tests of inter- and intra-search compatibility, and two are especially interesting: they are largely overlapping between the jets+MET searches and are characterized by low jet multiplicity, zero $b$-jets, and low MET and $H_T$. We find that resonant color-triplet production decaying to a quark plus an invisible particle provides an excellent fit to these two excesses and all other data -- including the ATLAS jets+MET search, which actually sees a correlated excess. We discuss the additional constraints coming from dijet resonance searches, monojet searches and pair production. Based on these results, we believe the wide-spread view that the LHC data contains no interesting excesses is greatly exaggerated.

Searching for Lepton Flavor Violation with the CMS Experiment

Abstract:Searches for lepton flavor violation (LFV) stand at the forefront of experimental particle physics research, offering a sensitive probe to many scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model. The high proton-proton collision energy and luminosity provided by the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the excellent CMS detector performance allow for an extensive program of LFV searches. This article reviews a broad range of LFV searches conducted at the CMS experiment using data collected in LHC Run 2, including $\tau\to3\mu$ decays, Higgs boson decays, and top quark production and decays. In each analysis, the online and offline event selections, signal modeling, background suppression and estimation, and statistical interpretation are elucidated. These searches involve various final state particles in a large transverse momentum range, showcasing the capability of the CMS experiment in exploring fundamental questions in particle physics.

Abstract:The properties of 125 GeV new particle,which was discovered in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider(LHC),are found to be consistent with those of the Higgs boson in the standard model(SM).Hereafter the new particle is dubbed as SM-like Higgs boson.However there is still spacious room for physics beyond the SM(BSM)due to the limited energy and luminosity of the LHC.With more data,experiments will scrutinize whether the new particle is indeed the SM one or not.At the same time,one believes that discovery of the SMlike Higgs boson is just the start of the new era of particle physics.The predominant topic is whether there are other new Higgs bosons as speculated in various BSM models.In this short review,we will describe the current status of Higgs physics at the LHC and several BSM models which contain more Higgs sectors.In literatures,there are numerous studies on extended Higgs sector and a comprehensive review is beyond the scope of this review.Instead,we will present two latest studies on Higgs physics:(1)how to detect the charged Higgs boson and measure tan b after including the top polarization information,and(2)how to discover the extra neutral Higgs boson via the pair production of SM-like Higgs boson.

Abstract:In Profumo di SUSY, we presented evidence that CMS&ATLAS may have already registered a handful of deftly camouflaged supersymmetry events at the LHC in the multijet channels. Here, we explore the prospect for corroboration of this suggestion from 5 additional CMS&ATLAS search strategies targeting the production of light stops & gluinos at lower jet counts, which variously depend on heavy flavor tagging and the inclusion or exclusion of associated leptons. The current operating phase of the 7TeV LHC is highly conducive to the production of gluinos & light stops, given the supersymmetric particle mass hierarchy M_t_1<M_g<M_q that naturally evolves from the dynamics of the model named No-Scale FSU5 that we presently study. Moreover, some tension persists against the SM data-driven and MC generated background predictions in certain LHC searches of this variety. We demonstrate that the 1-sigma overlap of the allowed supersymmetric event production for these seven search methodologies roundly envelops the most favorable phenomenological subspace of FSU5, while handily generating a 125GeV Higgs boson mass. In order to test the statistical significance of any correlations across the simulated FSU5 collider response in these seven search strategies, we implement a multi-axis chi^2 fitting procedure, yielding a best overall match in the vicinity of M1/2=610GeV, corresponding to light stop & gluino masses of approximately 665GeV and 830GeV. Consequently, we suggest that FSU5 is a better global fit to the studied LHC data than the SM alone, and moreover that its predictions appear to be meaningfully correlated with observed low-statistics excesses across a wide variety of specialized search strategies. We suspect the already collected 5/fb will be sufficient to either condense or disperse the delicate aroma of stops and gluinos that suffuses the early search.

Abstract:A review of recent results from searches for new physics is presented. The analyses exploit data sets collected by the CMS experiment during Run 2 of the CERN LHC. Searches for exotic particles decaying into two bosons and for heavy neutral leptons, as well as a model-agnostic search based on anomaly detection are summarised. No significant sign for the presence of new physics was found. Prospects for the CMS parking strategy during Run 3 are also discussed.

Abstract:A bstract We explore the potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in detecting a signal originating from the production of a heavy SU(2) R charged gauge boson that then decays into a top-bottom quark pair via the mediation of a right-handed neutrino, pp → W R → N R l → ( l ′ tb ) l . Such a channel, that we study in the context of the minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model, contrasts with conventional smoking-gun signatures targeted experimentally and phenomenologically in which only light quarks are involved. We propose a selection strategy aimed at extracting such a top-bottom signal and we estimate the resulting sensitivity of the LHC to the model. Our results demonstrate the potential impact of such a search and we therefore urge the experimental collaborations to carry out a similar analysis in the light of present and future data.

Abstract:Many compelling beyond the Standard Model scenarios predict signals that result in unconventional charged particle trajectories. Signatures for which unusual tracks are the most conspicuous feature of the event pose significant challenges for experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), particularly for the trigger. This article presents a study of track-based triggers for a representative set of long-lived and unconventional signatures at the upcoming High Luminosity LHC, as well as resulting recommendations for the target parameters of a hardware-based tracking system. Scenarios studied include large multiplicities of low momentum tracks produced in a soft-unclustered-energy-pattern model, displaced leptons and anomalous prompt tracks predicted in a Supersymmetry model with long-lived staus, and displaced hadrons predicted in a Higgs portal scenario with long-lived scalars.

Searching for New Physics in Hadronic Final States with Run 2 Proton-Proton Collision Data at the LHC

Abstract:The symmetries of the Standard Model give rise to the forces that act on particles, and the corresponding force mediators. While the Standard Model is an excellent description of particle interactions, it has known limitations; it is therefore important to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model, potentially indicating as-of-yet unknown symmetries of nature. The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have detailed physics programmes, involving a large number of searches for new physics in hadronic final states. As the start of Run 3 of the LHC is imminent, now is a good time to review the progress made and the status of hadronic searches during Run 2 at a centre-of-mass collision energy of 13 TeV. This review provides an overview of the motivations and challenges of hadronic final states at the LHC, followed by an introduction to jet reconstruction, calibration, and tagging. Three classes of searches for new physics in hadronic final states are discussed: di-jet searches, searches for missing transverse momentum in association with another object, and searches for hadronic di-boson resonances. The complementarity of these different analysis strategies is discussed, emphasising the importance of a varied hadronic physics programme in the search for new physics.

Searching supersymmetric leptonic partner at the CERN LHC

Abstract:Motivated by the observed excess of the di-photon signal in Higgs searches, σγγ/σSM≃1.5, we argue that models with enhanced Γ(h→γγ) alone are the most favorable scenarios when the latest LHC/Tevatron results are all taken into account. We study the phenomenology of a supersymmetric scenario of light stau that predicts a 125 GeV SM-like Higgs boson with enhanced di-photon decay through light stau loops. Since it is extremely challenging to search the Drell–Yan stau pair at the LHC due to the small production rate, we focus on the parameter space with enhanced production of inclusive stau pairs, in particular, via bb¯ fusion or gaugino pairs. We study its phenomenology in both pure leptonic tau τℓ± channels and hadronic tau tagged τh channels. We find the same-sign dilepton from χ˜1±χ˜20→τℓ±τℓ±+X may significantly improve the discovery potential with even 7–8 TeV LHC of O(30fb−1) data. In the case of hadronic tau pair, we use the final state j+τhτh+E̸T to search and find that even with the most optimistic region of M2∼200–300GeV, it requires at least 50 fb−1 data of 14 TeV LHC to reach a significance of 3.5σ. Therefore, we conclude it is difficult to claim discovery only through hadronic tau based on the data by the 2012 shut-down. 5σ reach for our most optimistic region then requires 100 fb−1 data with 14 TeV running.
