Abstract:Wavy-structured two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PC) is possessed of isofrequency contours of rectangular form and is therefore capable of self-collimation. The self-guiding phenomenon is studied by calculating the intensity of the electromagnetic waves through slabs of the PC. Superlensing based on self-collimation of wavy-structured 2DPC is also investigated by analyzing the field pattern where point source is used. The full width at half maximum of image point is calculated to be 0.28λ. The position of the image is always located in the near-field domain of the slab. Image quality degrades gradually as the slab thickness or the source-slab distance increases.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on the development of the self-collimation phenomenon in photonic crystal structures for integrated optics applications. In addition, detailed numerical analysis, design procedures, fabrication and characterization techniques are included. Applications presented in this paper include: channelless waveguiding, orthogonal bending of light, tunable beam splitter, all-optical analog-to-digital converter, reconfigurable optical switch, chemical/gas sensor and a three-dimensional optical interconnect bus.
Nonlinear photonic crystals near the supercollimation point

Abstract:We uncover a strong coupling between nonlinearity and diffraction in a photonic crystal at the supercollimation point. We show this is modeled by a nonlinear diffraction term in a nonlinear schroedinger type equation, in which the properties of solitons are investigated. Linear stability analysis shows solitons are stable in an existence domain that obeys the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterium. In addition, we investigate the influence of the nonlinear diffraction on soliton collision scenarios.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the theoretical and experimental results for self-collimation in low-index-contrast photonic crystals (PhCs) in the millimeter-wave (MMW) region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The design of the PhCs is based on their equifrequency contours and the two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulation results. In the experiments, the MMW PhCs are fabricated in Rexolite slabs by a CNC micro-milling system. A MMW imaging system is built based on a vector network analyzer. The input source is launched either through a waveguide or a monopole, while the field distribution is acquired by scanning a monopole antenna over the surface of the photonic crystal to detect the profile of the evanescent waves. In both cases, we have observed and characterized the self-collimation effect for both the amplitude and phase of the propagating electromagnetic wave in low-index-contrast photonic crystals.

Abstract:Lithography-free layered dielectric media play an important role in photonic platforms and open up new possibilities in the design of devices with large-scale compatibilities. In this work, we propose a hybrid structure consisting of phononic thin layer and Weyl semimetallic photonic crystals (WSMPhCs). Manipulation of electromagnetic (EM) waves and the interactions between different optical modes are presented, which is highly demanded for both fundamental research and practical applications. The weak and strong coupling effects result in hybrid polariton modes, of which the dispersion can be quantitatively described by a coupled harmonic oscillator (CHO) model. In the Kretschmann coupling proposal, when the incident angle is smaller than the critical angle ( =25 ) of total internal reflection, a weak coupling is generated. However, when the incident angle is larger than , anticrossing resluts from strong coupling can be observed. We believe that the use of easily manufactured WSM elements and the tunable hybridization of multiple optical modes will enable the manipulation of light-matter interactions with more flexibility in the mid-infrared (MIR) range, and can significantly improve the functional properties of various devices.

Weak Measurements of Light Chirality with a Plasmonic Slit

Abstract:We examine, both experimentally and theoretically, an interaction of tightly focused polarized light with a slit on a metal surface supporting plasmon-polariton modes. Remarkably, this simple system can be highly sensitive to the polarization of the incident light and offers a perfect quantum-weak-measurement tool with a built-in post-selection in the plasmon-polariton mode. We observe the plasmonic spin Hall effect in both coordinate and momentum spaces which is interpreted as weak measurements of the helicity of light with real and imaginary weak values determined by the input polarization. Our experiment combines advantages of (i) quantum weak measurements, (ii) near-field plasmonic systems, and (iii) high-numerical aperture microscopy in employing spin-orbit interaction of light and probing light chirality.

Abstract:Periodically structured materials can sustain both optical and mechanical excitations which are tailored by the geometry. Here we analyze the properties of dispersively coupled planar photonic and phononic crystals: optomechanical crystals. In particular, the properties of co-resonant optical and mechanical cavities in quasi-1D (patterned nanobeam) and quasi-2D (patterned membrane) geometries are studied. It is shown that the mechanical Q and optomechanical coupling in these structures can vary by many orders of magnitude with modest changes in geometry. An intuitive picture is developed based upon a perturbation theory for shifting material boundaries that allows the optomechanical properties to be designed and optimized. Several designs are presented with mechanical frequency ~ 1-10 GHz, optical Q-factor Qo > 10^7, motional masses meff 100 femtograms, optomechanical coupling length LOM < 5 microns, and a radiation-limited mechanical Q-factor Qm > 10^7.

Abstract:We present and experimentally validate self-collimation in planar photonic crystals as a new means of achieving structureless confinement of light in optical devices. We demonstrate the ability to arbitrarily guide and route light by exploiting the dispersive characteristics of the photonic crystal. Propagation loss as low as 2.17 dB/mm is measured, and the experimental validation of routing structures are presented.

Abstract:The authors design a photonic crystal Mach-Zehnder interferometer by utilizing the self-collimated beams and the bending and splitting mechanisms of line defects. Using this interferometer, they investigate the phase shift of the reflected and transmitted self-collimated beams over the line defects. In addition, on the basis of the intensity-asymmetric unidirectional-output design, they demonstrate that such interferometers can function as an intensity detector or an ultrafast optical switch when the material of photonic crystal is nonlinear.
Towards ultrafast subnanojoule solitonic nonlinear directional coupler based on soft glass dual-core photonics crystal fibers

Abstract:We demonstrate narrow band spectral intensity switching in dual-core photonic crystal fibers made of highly nonlinear glass under femtosecond excitation. The fibers expressed dual-core asymmetry, thus the slow and fast fiber cores were unambiguously distinguished according to their dispersion profiles. The asymmetry effect on the dual-core propagation in anomalous dispersion region was studied both experimentally and numerically. The experimental study was carried out using femtosecond laser amplifier system providing tunable pulses in range of 1500 nm - 1800 nm. The obtained results unveiled, that it is possible to improve nonlinearly the coupling between the two waveguides by excitation of the fast fiber core. The results were obtained in regime of high-order soliton propagation and were verified numerically by the coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations model. The spectral analysis of the radiation transferred to the non-excited core revealed the role of effects such as third order dispersion, soliton compression and spectral dependence of the coupling efficiency. The simulation results provide reasonable agreement with the experimentally observed spectral evolutions in the both fiber cores. Under 1800 nm excitation, narrow band spectral intensity switching was registered with contrast of 23 dB at 10 mm fiber length by changing the excitation pulse energy in sub-nanojoule range.
The all-angle self-collimating phenomenon in photonic crystals with rectangular symmetry

Abstract:We propose a two-dimensional photonic crystal of rectangular symmetry with rather straight iso-frequency lines over the whole first Brillouin zone along the Gamma X direction to realize all-angle self-collimation. By tracking the spatial evolution and transmission efficiency of the collimated beam along the propagating direction, it is found that the beam spreading and propagation loss are negligible for incident angles within +/-85 degrees. The self-collimating behaviors in the rectangular and square lattices are compared and the differences between them are investigated. As an application, a Y-shaped beam splitter with transmission efficiencies for both branches as high as 43.8% is constructed by combining two rotated rectangular structures.

Abstract:In recent years, there have been rapid advances in the parallel fields of electronic and photonic topological crystals. Topological photonic crystals in particular show promise for coherent transport of light and quantum information at macroscopic scales. In this work, we apply for the first time the recently developed theory of “topological quantum chemistry” to the study of band structures in photonic crystals. This method allows us to design and diagnose topological photonic band structures using only group theory and linear algebra. As an example, we focus on a family of crystals formed by elliptical rods in a triangular lattice. We show that the symmetry of Bloch states in the Brillouin zone can determine the position of the localized photonic wave packets describing groups of bands. By modifying the crystal structure and inverting bands, we show how the centers of these wave packets can be moved between different positions in the unit cell. Finally, we show that for shapes of dielectric rods, there exist isolated topological bands which do not admit a well-localized description, representing the first physical instance of “fragile” topology in a truly noninteracting system. Our work demonstrates how photonic crystals are the natural platform for the future experimental investigation of fragile topological bands.

Abstract:We investigate the interaction between a light beam and a two-dimensional photonic lattice that is photo-induced in a photorefractive crystal using partially coherent light. We demonstrate that this interaction process is associated with a host of new phenomena including lattice dislocation, lattice deformation, and creation of structures akin to optical polarons. In addition, two-dimensional discrete solitons are realized in such partially coherent photonic lattices.

Abstract:Hollow-core photonic-crystal waveguides filled with cold atoms can support giant optical nonlinearities through nondispersive propagation of light tightly confined in the transverse direction. Here we explore electromagnetically induced transparency is such structures, considering a pair of counterpropagating weak quantum fields in the medium of coherently driven atoms in the ladder configuration. Strong dipole-dipole interactions between optically excited, polarized Rydberg states of the atoms translate into a large dispersive interaction between the two fields. This can be used to attain a spatially homogeneous conditional phase shift of π for two single-photon pulses, realizing a deterministic photonic phase gate, or to implement a quantum nondemolition measurement of the photon number in the signal pulse by a coherent probe, thereby achieving a heralded source of single- or few-photon pulses.

Abstract:Concurrent spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) processes have proved to be an appealing approach for engineering the path-entangled photonic state with designable and tunable spatial modes. In this work, we propose a general scheme to construct high-dimensional path entanglement and demonstrate the basic properties of concurrent SPDC processes from domain-engineered quadratic nonlinear photonic crystals, including the spatial modes and the photon flux, as well as the anisotropy of spatial correlation under noncollinear quasi-phase-matching geometry. The overall understanding about the performance of concurrent SPDC processes will give valuable references to the construction of compact path entanglement and the development of new types of photonic quantum technologies.

Abstract:Anisotropy plays a key role in science and engineering. However, the interplay between the material and engineered photonic anisotropies has hardly been explored due to the vastly different length scales. Here we demonstrate a matter-light hybrid system, exciton-polaritons in a 2D antiferromagnet, CrSBr, coupled with an anisotropic photonic crystal (PC) cavity, where the spin, atomic lattice, and photonic lattices anisotropies are strongly correlated, giving rise to unusual properties of the hybrid system and new possibilities of tuning. We show exceptionally strong coupling between engineered anisotropic optical modes and anisotropic excitons in CrSBr, which is stable against excitation densities a few orders of magnitude higher than polaritons in isotropic materials. Moreover, the polaritons feature a highly anisotropic polarization tunable by tens of degrees by controlling the matter-light coupling via, for instance, spatial alignment between the material and photonic lattices, magnetic field, temperature, cavity detuning and cavity quality-factors. The demonstrated system provides a prototype where atomic- and photonic-scale orders strongly couple, opening opportunities of photonic engineering of quantum materials and novel photonic devices, such as compact, on-chip polarized light source and polariton laser.
