Abstract:We discuss certain homological properties of graded algebras whose trivial modules admit nonpure resolutions. Such algebras include both of Artin-Schelter regular algebras of types (12221) and (13431). Under certain conditions, a module with nonpure resolution is decomposed to form an extension by two modules with pure resolutions.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a standard graded commutative algebra over a field $k$, let $K$ be its Koszul complex viewed as a differential graded $k$-algebra, and let $H$ be the homology algebra of $K$. This paper studies the interplay between homological properties of the three algebras $R$, $K$, and $H$. In particular, we introduce two definitions of Koszulness that extend the familiar property originally introduced by Priddy: one which applies to $K$ (and, more generally, to any connected differential graded $k$-algebra) and the other, called strand-Koszulness, which applies to $H$. The main theoretical result is a complete description of how these Koszul properties of $R$, $K$, and $H$ are related to each other. This result shows that strand-Koszulness of $H$ is stronger than Koszulness of $R$, and we include examples of classes of algebras which have Koszul homology algebras that are strand-Koszul.

From total positivity to pure free resolutions

Abstract:Using the Jacobi-Trudi identity as a base, we establish parallels between the theory of totally positive integer sequences and Koszul algebras. We then focus on the case of quadric hypersurface rings and use this parallel to construct new analogues of Schur modules. We investigate some of their Lie-theoretic properties (and in more detail in a followup article) and use them to construct pure free resolutions for quadric hypersurface rings which are completely analogous to the construction given by Eisenbud, Fløystad, and Weyman in the case of polynomial rings.

Abstract:We construct two families of free resolutions that resolve the ideals of certain opposite Schubert varieties restricted to the big open cell. We conjecture that these examples have genericity properties translating to structure theorems for perfect ideals with given Betti numbers, extending the well-known theorem of Buchsbaum and Eisenbud on Gorenstein ideals of codimension three.

Koszul homomorphisms and universal resolutions in local algebra

Abstract:We define a local homomorphism $(Q,k)\to (R,\ell)$ to be Koszul if its derived fiber $R \otimes^{\mathsf{L}}_Q k$ is formal, and if $\operatorname{Tor}^Q(R,k)$ is Koszul in the classical sense. This recovers the classical definition when $Q$ is a field, and more generally includes all flat deformations of Koszul algebras. The non-flat case is significantly more interesting, and there is no need for examples to be quadratic: all complete intersection and all Golod quotients are Koszul homomorphisms. We show that the class of Koszul homomorphisms enjoys excellent homological properties, and we give many more examples, especially various monomial and Gorenstein examples. We then study Koszul homomorphisms from the perspective of $\mathrm{A}_\infty$-structures on resolutions. We use this machinery to construct universal free resolutions of $R$-modules by generalizing a classical construction of Priddy. The resulting (infinite) free resolution of an $R$-module $M$ is often minimal, and can be described by a finite amount of data whenever $M$ and $R$ have finite projective dimension over $Q$. Our construction simultaneously recovers the resolutions of Shamash and Eisenbud over a complete intersection ring, and the bar resolutions of Iyengar and Burke over a Golod ring, and produces analogous resolutions for various other classes of local rings.

On the Koszul Algebra for Trivariate Monomial Ideals

Abstract:We will describe how we can identify the structure of the Koszul algebra for trivariate monomial ideals from minimal free resolutions. We use recent work of L. Avramov, where he classifies the behavior of Bass numbers of embedding codepth 3 commutative local rings. His classification relies on a corresponding classification of their respective Koszul algebras, which is comprised of 5 categories. Using Avramov's classification of the Koszul algebra, along with their respective Bass series we will learn how to identify the Koszul algebra structure by inspecting the minimal free resolution of the quotient ring. We give a complete classification of the Koszul algebra for generic monomial ideals and offer several examples. In addition we will describe a class of ideals with a specific Koszul algebra structure which was previously unknown.

Abstract:We study associative graded algebras which have a ``complete flag'' of cyclic modules with linear free resolutions, i.e., algebras over which there is a cyclic Koszul module with every admissible number of relations (from zero up to the number of generators of the algebra). Commutative algebras with the same property has been studied in several papers by A. Conca and others. Here we present a non-commutative version. We introduce the concept of Koszul filtration in non-commutative algebras and study its connections with Koszul algebras and algebras with quadratic Groebner bases. Also, here are considered several examples, such as ``Groebner flags'', generic algebras, and algebras with one relation. A generalization of the concept Koszul filtration (generalized Koszul, or rate, filtration) leads to algebras with finite Backelin's rate and to coherent algebras. One of our main results is that every algebra with Koszul filtration (or with finite rate filtration) has rational Hilbert series.

Abstract:Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0 and let G be a symplectic or general linear group over k . We consider induced modules for G under the assumption that p is bigger than the greatest hook length in the partitions involved. We give explicit constructions of left resolutions of induced modules by tilting modules. Furthermore, we give injective resolutions for induced modules in certain truncated categories. We show that the multiplicities of the indecomposable tilting and injective modules in these resolutions are the coefficients of certain Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. We also show that our truncated categories have a Kazhdan-Lusztig theory in the sense of Cline, Parshall and Scott. This builds further on work of Cox-De Visscher and Brundan-Stroppel.

Abstract:Given a commutative algebra $\mathcal O$, a proper ideal $\mathcal I$, and a resolution of $\mathcal O/ \mathcal I$ by projective $\mathcal O $-modules, we construct an explicit Koszul-Tate resolution. We call it the arborescent Koszul-Tate resolution since it is indexed by decorated trees. When the $ \mathcal O$-module resolution has finite length, only finitely many operations are needed in our constructions -- this is to be compared with the classical Tate algorithm, which requires infinitely many such computations if $ \mathcal I$ is not a complete intersection. As a by-product of our construction, the initial projective $\mathcal O $-module resolution becomes equipped with an explicit $A_\infty$-algebra.

Noncommutative resolutions of AS-Gorenstein isolated singularites

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate noncommutative resolutions of (generalized) AS-Gorenstein isolated singularities. Noncommutative resolutions in graded case are achieved as the graded endomorphism rings of some finitely generated graded modules, which are seldom $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebras but bounded-below $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebras. So, the paper works on locally finite bounded-below $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebras. We first define and study noncommutative projective schemes after Artin-Zhang, and define noncommutative quasi-projective spaces as the base spaces of noncommutative projective schemes. The equivalences between noncommutative quasi-projective spaces are proved to be induced by so-called modulo-torsion-invertible bimodules, which is in fact a Morita-like theory at the quotient category level. Based on the equivalences, we propose a definition of noncommutative resolutions of generalized AS-Gorenstein isolated singularities, and prove that such noncommutative resolutions are generalized AS regular algebras. The center of any noncommutative resolution is isomorphic to the center of the original generalized AS-Gorenstein isolated singularity. In the final part we prove that a noncommutative resolution of an AS-Gorenstein isolated singularity of dimension $d$ is given by an MCM generator $M$ if and only if $M$ is a $(d-1)$-cluster tilting module. A noncommutative version of the Bondal-Orlov conjecture is also proved to be true in dimension 2 and 3.

Infinite free resolutions over numerical semigroup algebras via specialization

Abstract:Each numerical semigroup $S$ with smallest positive element $m$ corresponds to an integer point in a polyhedral cone $C_m$, known as the Kunz cone. The faces of $C_m$ form a stratification of numerical semigroups that has been shown to respect a number of algebraic properties of $S$, including the combinatorial structure of the minimal free resolution of the defining toric ideal $I_S$. In this work, we prove that the structure of the infinite free resolution of the ground field $\Bbbk$ over the semigroup algebra $\Bbbk[S]$ also respects this stratification, yielding a new combinatorial approach to classifying homological properties like Golodness and rationality of the poincare series in this setting. Additionally, we give a complete classification of such resolutions in the special case $m = 4$, and demonstrate that the associated graded algebras do not generally respect the same stratification.

Abstract:Given a finitely generated module $M$ over a Noetherian local ring $R$, one would like to know when the corresponding associated graded module has a pure resolution over $G_{\mathfrak{m}}(R)$. In this article, we identify a complex of free $G_{\mathfrak{m}}(R)$-modules, arising from given free resolution of $M$ over $R$, which is a resolution of $G_{\mathfrak{m}}(M)$ if and only if $G_{\mathfrak{m}}(M)$ is a pure $G_{\mathfrak{m}}(R)$-module. We also give several applications of the purity of $G_{\mathfrak{m}}(M)$ in this paper.

Hopf-Galois module structure of tamely ramified radical extensions of prime degree

Abstract:Let $ K $ be a number field and let $ L/K $ be a tamely ramified radical extension of prime degree $ p $. If $ K $ contains a primitive $ p^{th} $ root of unity then $ L/K $ is a cyclic Kummer extension; in this case the group algebra $ K[G] $ (with $ G=\mbox{Gal}(L/K) $) gives the unique Hopf-Galois structure on $ L/K $, the ring of algebraic integers $ \mathfrak{O}_L $ is locally free over $ \mathfrak{O}_{K}[G] $ by Noether's theorem, and Gómez Ayala has determined a criterion for $ \mathfrak{O}_L $ to be a free $ \mathfrak{O}_{K}[G] $-module. If $ K $ does not contain a primitive $ p^{th} $ root of unity then $ L/K $ is a separable, but non-normal, extension, which again admits a unique Hopf-Galois structure. Under the assumption that $ p $ is unramified in $ K $, we show that $ \mathfrak{O}_L $ is locally free over its associated order in this Hopf-Galois structure and determine a criterion for it to be free. We find that the conditions that appear in this criterion are identical to those appearing in Gómez Ayala's criterion for the normal case.

Combinatorial free chain complexes over quotient polynomial rings

Abstract:We present a procedure that constructs, in a combinatorial manner, a chain complex of free modules over a polynomial ring in finitely many variables, modulo an ideal generated by quadratic monomials. Applying this procedure to two specific rings and one family of rings, we demonstrate that the resulting chain complex is indeed an exact chain complex and thus a free resolution. Utilizing this free resolution, we show that, for these rings, the injective dimension is infinite, as modules over itself. Finally, we propose the conjecture that this procedure always yields a free resolution.

Abstract:A very first step to develop non-commutative algebraic geometry is the arithmetic of polynomials in non-commuting variables over a commutative field, that is, the study of elements in free associative algebras. This investigation is presented as a natural extension of the classical theory in one variable by using Leavitt algebras, which are localizations of free algebras with respect to the Gabriel topology defined by an ideal of codimension 1. In particular to any polynomial in n non-commuting variables with non-zero constant term we associate a finite-dimensional module over the free algebra of rank n, which turns out to be simple if and only if the polynomial is irreducible. This approach leads to new insights in the study of the factorization of polynomials into irreducible ones and other related topics, such as an algorithm to divide polynomials or to compute the greatest common divisor between them, or a description of similar polynomials. The case of polynomials with zero constant term reduces to an open question whether the intersection of nonunital subalgebras of codimension 1 in a free associative algebra is trivial, that is, 0.

Abstract:We extend recent results in order to construct projective resolutions for modules over twisted tensor products of truncated polynomial rings. We begin by taking note of the conditions necessary to think of these algebras as a type of Ore extension. We then use this parallel with Ore extensions to develop a method for constructing projective resolutions. Finally, we use the new construction to compute a resolution for a family of examples.

Resolutions as directed colimits

Abstract:A general principle suggests that "anything flat is a directed colimit of countably presentable flats". In this paper, we consider resolutions and coresolutions of modules over a countably coherent ring $R$ (e.g., any coherent ring or any countably Noetherian ring). We show that any $R$-module of flat dimension $n$ is a directed colimit of countably presentable $R$-modules of flat dimension at most $n$, and any flatly coresolved $R$-module is a directed colimit of countably presentable flatly coresolved $R$-modules. If $R$ is a countably coherent ring with a dualizing complex, then any F-totally acyclic complex of flat $R$-modules is a directed colimit of F-totally acyclic complexes of countably presentable flat $R$-modules. The proofs are applications of an even more general category-theoretic principle going back to an unpublished 1977 preprint of Ulmer. Our proof of the assertion that every Gorenstein-flat module over a countably coherent ring is a directed colimit of countably presentable Gorenstein-flat modules uses a different technique, based on results of Saroch and Stovicek. We also discuss totally acyclic complexes of injectives and Gorenstein-injective modules, obtaining various cardinality estimates for the accessibility rank under various assumptions.

Abstract:For the almost complete intersection ideals $(x_1^2, \dots, x_n^2, (x_1 + \cdots + x_n)^k)$, we compute their reduced Gröbner basis for any term ordering, revealing a combinatorial structure linked to lattice paths, elementary symmetric polynomials, and Catalan numbers. Using this structure, we classify the weak Lefschetz property for these ideals. Additionally, we provide a new proof of the well-known result that the squarefree algebra satisfies the strong Lefschetz property. Finally, we compute the Betti numbers of the initial ideals and construct a minimal free resolution using a Mayer-Vietoris tree approach.
