Abstract:The attenuation length and refractive index of liquid xenon for intrinsic scintillation light (178nm) have been measured in a single experiment. The value obtained for attenuation length is 364 +- 18 mm. The refractive index is found to be 1.69 +- 0.02. Both values were measured at a temperature of 170 +- 1 K.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
Judging from the text content you provided, this paper mainly focuses on the structural stability of biomacromolecules (such as proteins) and their changes under different environmental conditions. The following is a specific summary of the problems that the paper attempts to solve: ### Problems the paper attempts to solve 1. **Influencing factors of protein structure stability**: - Research on the structural stability of proteins under different environmental conditions (such as temperature, pH value, ionic strength, etc.). - Explore how these environmental factors affect the protein folding and unfolding processes. 2. **Relationship between protein dynamics and function**: - Analyze the relationship between the dynamic characteristics of proteins (such as conformational changes, flexible regions, etc.) and their biological functions. - Research the dynamic behaviors of proteins when performing specific functions and how these behaviors are affected by external conditions. 3. **Mechanisms of protein - protein interactions**: - Explore the interaction mechanisms between proteins and other biomacromolecules (such as DNA, RNA, other proteins). - Research the effects of these interactions on protein structure and function. 4. **Protein design and engineering**: - Use computational simulation and experimental data to optimize protein design in order to improve its stability and functionality. - Develop new protein engineering methods to meet specific application requirements (such as drug development, industrial enzyme preparations, etc.). 5. **Protein aggregation and diseases**: - Research the relationship between abnormal protein aggregation (such as amyloid protein aggregation) and neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease). - Explore how to prevent or treat related diseases by regulating protein aggregation. ### Formula examples In order to describe these problems more precisely, the following formulas may be involved in the text: - **Thermodynamic stability**: \[ \Delta G=\Delta H - T\Delta S \] where \(\Delta G\) is the change in Gibbs free energy, \(\Delta H\) is the enthalpy change, \(\Delta S\) is the entropy change, and \(T\) is the temperature. - **Protein folding rate**: \[ k_f = A e^{-\frac{E_a}{RT}} \] where \(k_f\) is the folding rate constant, \(A\) is the frequency factor, \(E_a\) is the activation energy, \(R\) is the gas constant, and \(T\) is the absolute temperature. - **Protein aggregation model**: \[ J = k_n C^n + k_m C^m \] where \(J\) is the aggregation rate, \(C\) is the protein concentration, \(k_n\) and \(k_m\) are the nucleation and growth rate constants, and \(n\) and \(m\) are the corresponding reaction orders. ### Conclusion Through the above research, the paper aims to deeply understand the relationship between protein structure and function, reveal the behavioral laws of proteins under different environmental conditions, and provide theoretical basis and technical support for protein engineering and disease treatment.
