Abstract:Strong flares of TeV gamma-ray emission up to a level of ~5 Crab were detected by the Whipple 10 m atmospheric Cerenkov telescope from the BL Lacertae object 1ES1959+650 during May - July 2002. We report here the results of follow up observations during 2002 - 2003.

Abstract:In 2003 April-May, the blazar 1ES 1959+650 showed an increased level of X-ray activity. This prompted a multiwavelength observation campaign with the Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope, the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer, the Bordeaux Optical Observatory, and the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory. We present the multiwavelength data taken from 2003 May 2 to June 7 and compare the source characteristics with those measured during observations taken during the years 2000 and 2002. The X-ray observations gave a data set with high signal-to-noise ratio light curves and energy spectra; however, the gamma-ray observations did not reveal a major TeV gamma-ray flare. Furthermore, we find that the radio and optical fluxes do not show statistically significant deviations from those measured during the 2002 flaring periods. While the X-ray flux and X-ray photon index appear correlated during subsequent observations, the apparent correlation evolved significantly among the years 2000, 2002, and 2003. We discuss the implications of this finding for the mechanism that causes the flaring activity.

Abstract:In observations made with the Whipple 10 m telescope. 1ES 1959+650 (z = 0.048) was caught in a high flaring state in May 2002, concurrent with a high X-ray state. and in June 2002, for which there was no corresponding X-ray flare. The spectra for both of those occasions are well fitted by a power law of differential spectral index similar to -2.8. The relative stability of the spectral index for those flares argues strongly in favour of a two-component model as to the emission zones for the two radiation regimes.Markarian 421 (z = 0.031) was observed to be in a high flaring state, at levels of >= 3 Crab., during March and April 2004. The average spectrum over this time period shows evidence for a cut-off in the spectrum at similar to 5 TeV, similar to a cut-off seen during an equivalently strong episode of flaring activity in 2001. The continued appearance of this feature indicates a long term stability, either in the physical conditions at the source. or in the intervening medium (such as attenuation on the extra-galactic infra-red background radiation).
Highlights from the Whipple 10-m Blazar Monitoring Program

Abstract:Approximately 25 blazars are know to emit VHE (E>100 GeV) gamma rays. Understanding these powerful objects requires long-term, intense, monitoring observations since they exhibit strong, rapid and irregular variability across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The Whipple 10-m Gamma-ray Telescope, the world's fourth most sensitive VHE telescope, is used primarily to perform such monitoring in the VHE band. The 10-m monitoring program focuses in particular on Mrk 421, Mrk 501, H 1426+428, 1ES 1959+650 and 1ES 2344+514, with observations performed every moonless night that each source is visible. Upon detection of a flare, alerts are sent to VERITAS and the astronomical community to trigger ToO observations, as was the case for one of the brightest-ever VHE flares of Mrk 421 in 2008. In addition to flaring alerts, the 10-m program is used to create long-term light curves, with unprecedented VHE sampling, that can be combined with other multi-frequency observations to better understand blazars. Highlights from the recent Whipple 10-m blazar program will be presented.

Abstract:We report on observations of the sky region around the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source (TeV J2032+ 4130) carried out with the Whipple Observatory 10 m atmospheric Cerenkov telescope for a total of 65.5 hr between 2003 and 2005. The standard two-dimensional analysis developed by the Whipple collaboration for a stand-alone telescope reveals an excess in the field of view at a pretrial significance level of 6.1 sigma. The measured position of this excess is alpha = 20(h)32(m)27(s), delta = 41 degrees 39'17" (J2000.0). The estimated integral flux for this gamma-ray source is about 8% of the Crab Nebula flux. The data are consistent with a pointlike source. Here we present a detailed description of the standard two-dimensional analysis technique used for the analysis of data taken with the Whipple Observatory 10 m telescope and the results for the TeV J2032+ 4130 campaign. We include a short discussion of the physical mechanisms that may be responsible for the observed gamma-ray emission, based on possible association with known astrophysical objects, in particular, Cygnus OB2.

Abstract:We report on observations of Markarian 421 made with the Whipple 10m Cerenkov telescope and the RXTE satellite during a multi-wavelength campaign in December 2002 and January 2003, initiated by a Whipple target of opportunity. The observations revealed several flares with flux levels between 1 and 2 times the flux of the Crab Nebula. We will discuss the temporal properties, including evidence of X-ray/TeV gamma-ray flux correlation.

Abstract:In 1989, the Whipple 10m telescope achieved the first indisputable detection of a TeV gamma-ray source, the Crab Nebula. Until its decommissioning in 2011, the Whipple telescope took regular measurements of the nebula. With the recent discovery of GeV gamma-ray flaring activity in the Crab Nebula, it is an opportune time to return to the Whipple telescope data set and search its extensive archive for evidence of TeV flares. A data set on the Crab Nebula spanning ten years, 2000 - 2010, is compiled and searched for day-scale flaring activity using a Bayesian-block binning algorithm. No evidence for significant flaring activity is found. Monte Carlo simulations show that low levels of flux increase on short timescales are difficult to detect. Assuming a flare duration of seven days, 99% confidence level upper limits are calculated for the possible frequency of five-fold, two-fold and 1.5-fold flares in the data set. An upper limit of 0.02 flares per year is found for the five-fold flare, and a limit of 0.27 flares per year is placed on the two-fold flare. The detection of the 1.5-fold flare is consistent with the false-positive rate of the method, and so cannot be excluded.

Abstract:We report on the VERITAS observations of the high-frequency peaked BL Lac object 1ES 1959+650 in the period 2007-2011. This source is detected at TeV energies by VERITAS at 16.4 standard deviation (sigma) significance in 7.6 hr of observation in a low flux state. A multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) is constructed from contemporaneous data from VERITAS, Fermi-LAT, RXTE PCA, and Swift UVOT. Swift XRT data is not included in the SED due to a lack of simultaneous observations with VERITAS. In contrast to the orphan gamma-ray flare exhibited by this source in 2002, the X-ray flux of the source is found to vary by an order of magnitude, while other energy regimes exhibit less variable emission. A quasi-equilibrium synchrotron self-Compton model with an additional external radiation field is used to describe three SEDs corresponding to the lowest, highest, and average X-ray states. The variation in the X-ray spectrum is modeled by changing the electron injection spectral index, with minor adjustments of the kinetic luminosity in electrons. This scenario produces small-scale flux variability of the order of less than or similar to 2 in the high energy (E > 1MeV) and very high energy (E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray regimes, which is corroborated by the Fermi-LAT, VERITAS, and Whipple 10 m telescope light curves.

Abstract:The Whipple 10 meter atmospheric Cherenkov telescope has made observations of the region known as the Cygnus arm. This region has been recently reported by the Milagro experiment to contain a diffuse TeV gamma-ray source centered at RA=308 and Dec=42. We report upper limits (using the Whipple 10 m telescope) obtained during the Fall 2004 observing season centered on RA=310 and Dec=42.65.

Observations of the Crab Nebula with the Whipple 10 m Telescope

Abstract:Due to the strong and steady TeV gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula supernova remnant, its measured flux and energy spectrum can be used to verify the calibration and data reduction methods applied to IACT data acquired over many observing seasons. This gives us confidence in the results obtained on variable TeV sources observed over the same period and in relating the sensitivity of new instruments to historical datasets. Here we present the results of an analysis of 65.3 hours of good quality data taken on the Crab Nebula between October 2000 and March 2006 with the Whipple 10m telescope. The total exposure resulted in a 46 sigma signal with 11886 selected excess events. The energy spectrum was best fit by a power law of the form dN/dE = (3.19 +/- 0.07_stat) x 10^-11 (E/TeV)^(-2.64 +/- 0.03_stat) cm^-2/s/TeV in the energy range 0.49--8 TeV. The systematic uncertainty in the flux was estimated to be 30%, with a systematic error of 0.2 in the photon index. A reasonable agreement is shown for a fit to a constant flux over the 6 years.

Abstract:Details are presented of the Whipple Observatory’s 10m atmospheric Cherenkov telescope and camera, as it evolved during the period 1997 until 2006. The design of the telescope and camera’s optical and electronic systems is discussed together with a detailed description of the four-stage GRANITE (Gamma-RAy New Imaging TElescope) upgrade program, undertaken during the same time period. The objective of the upgrade was to improve the telescope’s sensitivity for the detection of very-high-energy gamma-rays. Results from the program are provided and are briefly discussed in the context of the design of VERITAS.

Abstract:We summarize broadband observations of the TeV-emitting blazar 1ES 1959+650, including optical R-band observations by the robotic telescopes Super-LOTIS and iTelescope, UV observations by Swift UVOT, X-ray observations by the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT), high-energy gamma-ray observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations by VERITAS above 315 GeV, all taken between 17 April 2012 and 1 June 2012 (MJD 56034 and 56079). The contemporaneous variability of the broadband spectral energy distribution is explored in the context of a simple synchrotron self Compton (SSC) model. In the SSC emission scenario, we find that the parameters required to represent the high state are significantly different than those in the low state. Motivated by possible evidence of gas in the vicinity of the blazar, we also investigate a reflected-emission model to describe the observed variability pattern. This model assumes that the non-thermal emission from the jet is reflected by a nearby cloud of gas, allowing the reflected emission to re-enter the blob and produce an elevated gamma-ray state with no simultaneous elevated synchrotron flux. The model applied here, although not required to explain the observed variability pattern, represents one possible scenario which can describe the observations. As applied to an elevated VHE state of 66% of the Crab Nebula flux, observed on a single night during the observation period, the reflected-emission scenario does not support a purely leptonic non-thermal emission mechanism. The reflected emission model does, however, predict a reflected photon field with sufficient energy to enable elevated gamma-ray emission via pion production with protons of energies between 10 and 100 TeV.

Abstract:The blazar 1ES 1959+650 was observed in a flaring state with the Whipple 10 m Imaging Atmospheric Cerenkov Telescope in 2002 May. A spectral analysis has been carried out on the data from that time period, and the resulting very high energy gamma-ray spectrum (E greater than or equal to 316 GeV) can be well fitted by a power law of differential spectral index alpha = 2.78 +/- 0.12(stat) +/- 0.21(sys). On 2002 June 4, the source flared dramatically in the gamma-ray range without any coincident increase in the X-ray emission, providing the first unambiguous example of an "orphan'' gamma-ray flare from a blazar. The gamma-ray spectrum for these data can also be described by a simple power-law fit with alpha = 2.82 +/- 0.15(stat) +/- 0.30(sys). There is no compelling evidence for spectral variability or for any cutoff to the spectrum.

Abstract:We report the detection of very high-energy γ-ray emission from the intermediate-frequencypeaked BLLacertae object WComae (z = 0.102) by VERITAS, an array of four imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes. The source was observed between January and April 2008. A strong outburst of γ-ray emission was measured in the middle of March, lasting for only four days. The energy spectrum measured during the two highest flare nights is fit by a power-law and is found to be very steep, with a differential photon spectral index of Γ = 3.81±0.35stat±0.34syst. The integral photon flux above 200 GeV during those two nights corresponds to roughly 9% of the flux from the Crab Nebula. Quasi-simultaneous Swift observations at X-ray energies were triggered by the VERITAS observations. The spectral energy distribution of the flare data can be described by synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) or external-Compton (EC) leptonic jet models, with the latter offering a more natural set of parameters to fit the data. Abstract:The intermediate-frequency peaked BL Lacertae (IBL) object 3C 66A is detected during 2007-2008 in VHE ( very high energy; E > 100 GeV) gamma rays with the VERITAS stereoscopic array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. An excess of 1791 events is detected, corresponding to a significance of 21.2 standard deviations (sigma), in these observations (32.8 hr live time). The observed integral flux above 200 GeV is 6% of the Crab Nebula's flux and shows evidence for variability on the timescale of days. The measured energy spectrum is characterized by a soft power law with photon index Gamma = 4.1 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 0.6(sys). The radio galaxy 3C 66B is excluded as a possible source of the VHE emission.

Abstract:Gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations at very high energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) can impose tight constraints on some GRB emission models. Many GRB afterglow models predict a VHE component similar to that seen in blazars and plerions, in which the GRB spectral energy distribution has a double-peaked shape extending into the VHE regime. VHE emission coincident with delayed X-ray flare emission has also been predicted. GRB follow-up observations have had high priority in the observing program at the Whipple 10m Gamma-ray Telescope and GRBs will continue to be high priority targets as the next generation observatory, VERITAS, comes on-line. Upper limits on the VHE emission, at late times (> 4 hours), from seven GRBs observed with the Whipple Telescope are reported here.
