Abstract:We analyze a science collaboration network, i.e. a network whose nodes are scientists with edges connecting them for each paper published together. Furthermore we develop a model for the simulation of discontiguous small-world networks that shows good coherence with the empirical data.

Abstract:Scientific collaboration network gives a nice description for communications among scientists. In order to show the status of the research in Econophysics, we have collected papers in Econophysics and constructed a network of scientific communication to integrate idea transportation among econophysicists by collaboration, citation and personal discussion. Inspired by scientific collaboration networks, especially our empirical analysis of econophysicists network, an evolutionary model for weighted networks is proposed. The model shows the scale-free phenomena in degree and vertex weight distribution. The results of short term evolution are consistent well qualitatively with the empirical results.

Abstract:In this paper, by considering the collaborative scientific behaviors, a model for evolving hyper-network is proposed based on the hypergraph theory. We study analytically the dynamics of authors’ hyper-degree using mean-field approach. Results of both theoretical and numerical studies indicate that such a hyper-degree distribution follows a power-law decay, with the exponentγ=1+ LM , where LM suggests the author growth rate of an evolving scientific network. In addition, empirical studies on ten-year journal data of Science China and Acta Physica Sinica from 2003 to 2012, shows that the present model can find good agreement with the empirical data. The proposed model may shed some light on the in-depth understanding of the structure and scientific collaboration networks.

Abstract:Collaboration networks arise when we map the connections between scientists which are formed through joint publications. These networks thus display the social structure of academia, and also allow conclusions about the structure of scientific knowledge. Using the computer science publication database DBLP, we compile relations between authors and publications as graphs and proceed with examining and quantifying collaborative relations with graph-based methods. We review standard properties of the network and rank authors and publications by centrality. Additionally, we detect communities with modularity-based clustering and compare the resulting clusters to a ground-truth based on conferences and thus topical similarity. In a second part, we are the first to combine DBLP network data with data from the Dagstuhl Seminars: We investigate whether seminars of this kind, as social and academic events designed to connect researchers, leave a visible track in the structure of the collaboration network. Our results suggest that such single events are not influential enough to change the network structure significantly. However, the network structure seems to influence a participant's decision to accept or decline an invitation.

Abstract:In order to reveal the intrinsic properties of scientific collaboration networks, a new local-world evolution model on a scientific collaboration network is proposed by analysing the network growth mechanism. The act degree as the measurement of preferential attachment is taken, and the local-world information of nodes is taken into account. Analysis and simulation show that the node degree and the node strength obey the power-law distribution. Low average path length and high clustering coefficient are approved. Experiment indicates that the model can depict efficiently the topological structure and statistical characteristics of real-life scientific collaboration networks.

Abstract:The author collaboration complex network is presented and analyzed.It is found that the largest connected collaboration sub-network appears to be a scale-free network,and it behaves some like a small-world.Other characters such as the degree distributions,the cluster coefficients,and the average distance in this sub-network are discussed.

Abstract:The large amounts of publicly available bibliographic repositories on the web provide us great opportunities to study the scientific behaviors of scholars. This paper aims to study the way we collaborate, model the dynamics of collaborations and predict future collaborations among authors. We investigate the collaborations in three disciplines including physics, computer science and information science,and different kinds of features which may influence the creation of collaborations. Path-based features are found to be particularly useful in predicting collaborations. Besides, the combination of path-based and attribute-based features achieves almost the same performance as the combination of all features considered. Inspired by the findings, we propose an agent-based model to simulate the dynamics of collaborations. The model merges the ideas of network structure and node attributes by leveraging random walk mechanism and interests similarity. Empirical results show that the model could reproduce a number of realistic and critical network statistics and patterns. We further apply the model to predict collaborations in an unsupervised manner and compare it with several state-of-the-art approaches. The proposed model achieves the best predictive performance compared with the random baseline and other approaches. The results suggest that both network structure and node attributes may play an important role in shaping the evolution of collaboration networks.
Data-driven modeling of collaboration networks: A cross-domain analysis

Abstract:We analyze large-scale data sets about collaborations from two different domains: economics, specifically 22.000 R&D alliances between 14.500 firms, and science, specifically 300.000 co-authorship relations between 95.000 scientists. Considering the different domains of the data sets, we address two questions: (a) to what extent do the collaboration networks reconstructed from the data share common structural features, and (b) can their structure be reproduced by the same agent-based model. In our data-driven modeling approach we use aggregated network data to calibrate the probabilities at which agents establish collaborations with either newcomers or established agents. The model is then validated by its ability to reproduce network features not used for calibration, including distributions of degrees, path lengths, local clustering coefficients and sizes of disconnected components. Emphasis is put on comparing domains, but also sub-domains (economic sectors, scientific specializations). Interpreting the link probabilities as strategies for link formation, we find that in R&D collaborations newcomers prefer links with established agents, while in co-authorship relations newcomers prefer links with other newcomers. Our results shed new light on the long-standing question about the role of endogenous and exogenous factors (i.e., different information available to the initiator of a collaboration) in network formation.

Scientific Collaboration Network Based on MATCH Communications in Mathematical and in Computer Chemistry

Abstract:Using the database of scientific papers published in MATCH Communications in Mathematical and in Computer Chemistry from 2000 to 2012, by combining complex network theory and social network analysis, we construct the network of collaboration between scientists. In the network two scientists are connected if they have coauthored one or more papers together. At the same time, we study a variety of statistical properties of the network, including average path length between scientists, degree distribution, clustering coefficient, betweenness, existence and size of a giant component of connected scientists. The result shows that the scientific collaboration network is a non-connected network and presents the network characteristic of scale-free and small-world.

Abstract:Co-authorship in publications within a discipline uncovers interesting properties of the analysed field. We represent collaboration in academic papers of computer science in terms of differently grained networks, including those sub-networks that emerge from conference and journal co-authorship only. We take advantage of the network science paraphernalia to take a picture of computer science collaboration including all papers published in the field since 1936. We investigate typical bibliometric properties like scientific productivity of authors and collaboration level in papers, as well as large-scale network properties like reachability and average separation distance among scholars, distribution of the number of scholar collaborators, network resilience and dependence on star collaborators, network clustering, and network assortativity by number of collaborators.

Modelling tipping-point phenomena of scientific coauthorship networks

Abstract:In a range of scientific coauthorship networks, tipping points are detected in degree distributions, correlations between degrees and local clustering coefficients, etc. The existence of those tipping points could be treated as a result of the diversity of collaboration behaviours in scientific field. A growing geometric hypergraph built on a cluster of concentric circles is proposed to model two typical collaboration behaviours, namely the behaviour of leaders and that of other members in research teams. The model successfully predicts the tipping points, as well as many common features of coauthorship networks. For example, it realizes a process of deriving the complex scale-free property from the simple yes/no experiments. Moreover, it gives a reasonable explanation for the emergence of tipping points by the difference of collaboration behaviours between leaders and other members, which emerges in the evolution of research teams. The evolution synthetically addresses typical factors of generating collaborations, such as academic impacts, the homophily of authors, and the communications between research teams, etc.
A Model of Densifying Collaboration Networks

Abstract:Research collaborations provide the foundation for scientific advances, but we have only recently begun to understand how they form and grow on a global scale. Here we analyze a model of the growth of research collaboration networks to explain the empirical observations that the number of collaborations scales superlinearly with institution size, though at different rates (heterogeneous densification), the number of institutions grows as a power of the number of researchers (Heaps' law) and institution sizes approximate Zipf's law. This model has three mechanisms: (i) researchers are preferentially hired by large institutions, (ii) new institutions trigger more potential institutions, and (iii) researchers collaborate with friends-of-friends. We show agreement between these assumptions and empirical data, through analysis of co-authorship networks spanning two centuries. We then develop a theoretical understanding of this model, which reveals emergent heterogeneous scaling such that the number of collaborations between institutions scale with an institution's size.

Abstract:AbstractScientific collaboration is essential in solving problems and breeding innovation. Coauthor network analysis has been utilized to study scholars' collaborations for a long time, but these studies have not simultaneously taken different collaboration features into consideration. In this paper, we present a systematic approach to analyze the differences in possibilities that two authors will cooperate as seen from the effects of homophily, transitivity, and preferential attachment. Exponential random graph models ERGMs are applied in this research. We find that different types of publications one author has written play diverse roles in his/her collaborations. An author's tendency to form new collaborations with her/his coauthors' collaborators is strong, where the more coauthors one author had before, the more new collaborators he/she will attract. We demonstrate that considering the authors' attributes and homophily effects as well as the transitivity and preferential attachment effects of the coauthorship network in which they are embedded helps us gain a comprehensive understanding of scientific collaboration.

Abstract:The master-equation approach is used to describe the dynamic structure property of complex networks. In this paper, we consider the scientific collaboration network model that there are multiple new scientists participant in each time. By master-equation approach, we study the node degree distribution in the scientific collaboration network model with numerical simulations verifying the feasibility of the model. It is proved that the node degree distribution of the model is a right-skewed power-law like distribution. For uncorrelated scientific collaboration network, we get the epidemic threshold of this model by actual data.

Abstract:Science is increasingly dominated by teams. Understanding patterns of scientific collaboration and their impacts on the productivity and evolution of disciplines is crucial to understand scientific processes. Electronic bibliography offers a unique opportunity to map and investigate the nature of scientific collaboration. Recent work have demonstrated a counter-intuitive organizational pattern of scientific collaboration networks: densely interconnected local clusters consist of weak ties, whereas strong ties play the role of connecting different clusters. This pattern contrasts itself from many other types of networks where strong ties form communities while weak ties connect different communities. Although there are many models for collaboration networks, no model reproduces this pattern. In this paper, we present an evolution model of collaboration networks, which reproduces many properties of real-world collaboration networks, including the organization of tie strengths, skewed degree and weight distribution, high clustering and assortative mixing.

Abstract:Collaboration patterns offer important insights into how scientific breakthroughs and innovations emerge in small and large research groups. However, links in traditional networks account only for pairwise interactions, thus making the framework best suited for the description of two-person collaborations, but not for collaborations in larger groups. We therefore study higher-order scientific collaboration networks where a single link can connect more than two individuals, which is a natural description of collaborations entailing three or more people. We also consider different layers of these networks depending on the total number of collaborators, from one upwards. By doing so, we obtain novel microscopic insights into the representativeness of researchers within different teams and their links with others. In particular, we can follow the maturation process of the main topological features of collaboration networks, as we consider the sequence of graphs obtained by progressively merging collaborations from smaller to bigger sizes starting from the single-author ones. We also perform the same analysis by using publications instead of researchers as network nodes, obtaining qualitatively the same insights and thus confirming their robustness. We use data from the arXiv to obtain results specific to the fields of physics, mathematics, and computer science, as well as to the entire coverage of research fields in the database.

Abstract:Scientific collaboration has a complex hypernetwork structure. How to construct scientific collaboration in a complex system is an open issue. In this paper, a non-uniform dynamic collaborative evolution model is proposed. In the proposed method, each scholar is viewed as a node, and each cooperation relationship is regarded as a hyperedge. This model includes three processes: adding hyperedges, entering nodes, and forming hyperedges by new nodes. It is theoretically proved that the hyperdegree distribution of nodes follows the power law distribution. Furthermore, the effects of different parameters on the proposed model are numerically simulated in this paper. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical ones. In addition, experiments show that the influence of nodes and hyperedges will affect the selection of old nodes when new nodes enter the network. This paper not only considers the construction of hyperedges with old nodes but also considers the possibility that new nodes construct new hyperedges among themselves. This model provides a reference for the research of the evolution process of scientific collaboration hypernetworks. (c) 2022 Author(s). Abstract:In this paper we present an empirical study of a few practical systems described by cooperation networks, and propose a model to understand the results obtained. We study four non-social systems, which are the Bus Route Networks of Beijing and Yangzhou, the Travel Route Network of China, Huai-Yang recipes of Chinese cooked food, and a social system, which is the Collaboration Network of Hollywood Actors. In order to explain the results related to the degree distribution, act-degree distribution and act-size distribution (especially about the degree distribution, which may be better fitted using a stretched exponential distribution (SED)), we suggest a simple model to show a possible evolutionary mechanism for the emergence of such networks. The analytic and numerical results obtained from the model are in good agreement with the empirical results.

Abstract:Inspired by scientific collaboration networks (SCN), especially our empirical analysis of econophysicists network, an evolutionary model for weighted networks is proposed. Besides a new vertex added in at every time step, old vertices can also attempt to build up new links, or to reconnect the existing links. The number of connections repeated between two nodes is converted into the weight of the link. This provides a natural way for the evolution of link weight. The path-dependent preferential attachment mechanism with local information is also introduced. It increases the clustering coefficient of the network significantly. The model shows the scale-free phenomena in degree and vertex weight distribution. It also gives well qualitatively consistent behavior with the empirical results.
