Abstract:Recent studies have shown that quasinormal modes suffer from spectral instabilities, a frailty of black holes that leads to disproportional migration of their spectra in the complex plane when black-hole effective potentials are modified by minuscule perturbations. Similar results have been found with the mathematical notion of the pseudospectrum which was recently introduced in gravitational physics. Environmental effects, such as the addition of a thin accretion disk or a matter shell, lead to a secondary bump that appears in the effective potential of black hole perturbations. Regardless of the environment's small contribution to the effective potential, its presence can completely destabilize the fundamental quasinormal mode and may potentially affect black hole spectroscopy. Here, we perform a comprehensive analysis of such phenomenon for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Schwarzschild-de Sitter, and Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes by considering the potential for a test scalar field with the addition of a tiny bump sufficiently away from the photon sphere. We find a qualitatively similar destabilization pattern for photon sphere, complex, scalar quasinormal modes in all cases, and a surprising spectral stability for dominant scalar, purely imaginary, de Sitter and near-extremal modes that belong to different families of the spectrum. For Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes, we re-evaluate the validity of the strong cosmic censorship and find that the addition of a realistic bump in the effective potential cannot prevent its violation due to a combination of the spectral stability of dominant de Sitter and near-extremal modes for small cosmological constants and an ineffective migration of the photon sphere modes that dominate the late-time ringdown signal for sufficiently large cosmological constants.

Abstract:We discuss FLRW-cosmologies with negatively-curved spatial slices that induce a late-time stabilization of all the moduli of an effective field theory through Hubble friction, independently of the moduli-space curvature. This holds for pure moduli, which appear ubiquitously in string compactifications. Crucially, the cosmological solutions approach a Milne universe. Hence, the mechanism we describe in fact corresponds to late-time moduli stabilization in Minkowski spacetime.

Stochastic Dark Matter: Covariant Brownian Motion from Planckian Discreteness

Abstract:Quantum gravity has long remained elusive from an observational standpoint. Developing effective cosmological models motivated by the fundamental aspects of quantum gravity is crucial for bridging theory with observations. One key aspect is the granularity of spacetime, which suggests that free particles would deviate from classical geodesics by following a covariant Brownian motion. This notion is further supported by swerves models in causal set theory, a discrete approach to quantum gravity. At an effective level, such deviations are described by a stochastic correction to the geodesic equation. We show that the form of this correction is strictly restricted by covariance and the mass-shell condition. Under minimal coupling to curvature, the resulting covariant Brownian motion is unique. The process is equivalently described by a covariant diffusion equation for the distribution of massive particles in their relativistic phase space. When applied to dark matter particles, covariant Brownian motion results in spontaneous warming at late times, suppressing the matter power spectrum at small scales in a time-dependent manner. Using bounds on the diffusion rate from CMB and growth history measurements of $f\sigma_8$, we show that the model offers a resolution to the $S_8$ tension. Future studies on the model's behavior at non-linear cosmological scales will provide further constraints and, therefore, critical tests for the viability of stochastic dark matter.

Perturbing the perturbed: Stability of quasinormal modes in presence of a positive cosmological constant

Abstract:In this work, we wish to address the question -- whether the quasi-normal modes, the characteristic frequencies associated with perturbed black hole spacetimes, central to the stability of these black holes, are themselves stable. Though the differential operator governing the perturbation of black hole spacetimes is self-adjoint, the boundary conditions are dissipative in nature, so that the spectral theorem becomes inapplicable, and there is no guarantee regarding the stability of the quasi-normal modes. We have provided a general method of transforming to the hyperboloidal coordinate system, for both asymptotically flat and asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes which neatly captures the dissipative boundary conditions, and the differential operator becomes non-self-adjoint. Employing the pseudospectrum analysis and numerically implementing the same through Chebyshev's spectral method, we present how the quasi-normal modes will drift away from their unperturbed values under external perturbation of the scattering potential. Intriguingly, for strong enough perturbation, even the fundamental quasi-normal mode, associated with gravitational perturbations, drifts away from its unperturbed position for asymptotically de Sitter black holes, in stark contrast to the case of asymptotically flat black holes. Besides presenting several other interesting results, specifically for asymptotically de Sitter black holes, we also discuss the implications of the instability of the fundamental quasi-normal mode on the strong cosmic censorship conjecture.

Abstract:This work explores the dynamical stability of cosmological models where dark matter and dark energy can non-minimally couple to spacetime (scalar) curvature. Two different scenarios are presented here. In the initial case, only dark matter sector is coupled to curvature in the presence of a quintessence scalar field. In the second case both dark matter and the quintessence field are coupled to curvature. It is shown that one can get an accelerating expansion phase of the universe in both the cases. The nature of the fixed points show that there can be stable or unstable phases where the curvature coupling vanishes and dark energy and dark matter evolve independently. On the other hand there can be stable accelerating expansion phases where both the components are coupled to curvature.

Spatial Curvature from Super-Hubble Cosmological Fluctuations

Abstract:We revisit how super-Hubble cosmological fluctuations induce, at any time in the cosmic history, a non-vanishing spatial curvature of the local background metric. The random nature of these fluctuations promotes the curvature density parameter to a stochastic quantity for which we derive novel non-perturbative expressions for its mean, variance, higher moments and full probability distribution. For scale-invariant Gaussian perturbations, such as those favored by cosmological observations, we find that the most probable value for the curvature density parameter $\Omega_\mathrm{K}$ today is $-10^{-9}$, that its mean is $+10^{-9}$, both being overwhelmed by a standard deviation of order $10^{-5}$. We then discuss how these numbers would be affected by the presence of large super-Hubble non-Gaussianities, or, if inflation lasted for a very long time. In particular, we find that substantial values of $\Omega_\mathrm{K}$ are obtained if inflation lasts for more than a billion e-folds.

Scale invariant curvature perturbations from a spontaneously decaying scalar field

Abstract:The evolution of superhorizon curvature perturbations in a two-component interacting universe is considered. It is found that adiabatic modes conserve the total curvature perturbation $\zeta$, unless there are stages in which the rate of dissipation of one component into another is not constant. Moreover, our result shows that when the rate is varying it is possible for 'isocurvature' perturbations generated during reheating to alter the amplitude of an adiabatic curvature mode even when the mode is outside the horizon. Specifically, if an indefinitely large rate $\Gamma$ for massive particles decaying into photons develops rapidly amid vanishingly small initial values (before decay) of the total curvature $\zeta_i$ and Newtonian potential $\Phi_i$, such that the product $\Gamma\zeta_i$ and $\Gamma\Phi_i$ become a pair of finite and universal constants for all superhorizon scales afterwards, Harrison-Zel'dovich scale-invariant power spectrum could be synthesized from a homogeneous state without inflation at all.

Generic transverse stability of kink structures in atomic and optical nonlinear media with competing attractive and repulsive interactions

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence and stability of one-dimensional (1D) topological kink configurations immersed in higher-dimensional bosonic gases and nonlinear optical setups. Our analysis pertains, in particular, to the two- and three-dimensional extended Gross-Pitaevskii models with quantum fluctuations describing droplet-bearing environments but also to the two-dimensional cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation containing higher-order corrections to the nonlinear refractive index. Contrary to the generic dark soliton transverse instability, the kink structures are generically robust under the interplay of low-amplitude attractive and high-amplitude repulsive interactions. A quasi-1D effective potential picture dictates the existence of these defects, while their stability is obtained through linearization analysis and direct dynamics in the presence of external fluctuations showcasing their unprecedented resilience. These generic (across different models) findings should be detectable in current cold atom and optics experiments. They also offer insights towards controlling topological excitations and their usage in topological quantum computers.

Stochastic Dark Matter from Curvature Perturbations

Abstract:We investigate the production of dark matter from curvature perturbations produced during inflation or in standard cosmology, for example during first order phase transitions. Perturbations break Weyl flatness of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric, allowing conformally coupled fields -- in particular fermions studied here -- to be produced even in the massless limit. Particle production can be computed by studying the Bogoliubov transformation induced by the stochastic background. For perturbations generated during inflation, we present a closed formula for the resulting abundance of particles that depends solely on the power spectrum of curvature perturbations at the end of inflation. This production mechanism can be dominant especially if the amplitude of curvature perturbations is enhanced for modes that exit the horizon towards the end of inflation. In the simplest scenario, the critical dark matter abundance is reproduced for $M \gtrsim 10^{6}$ GeV.

On the Generality and Persistence of Cosmological Stasis

Abstract:Hierarchical decays of $N$ matter species to radiation may balance against Hubble expansion to yield stasis, a new phase of cosmological evolution with constant matter and radiation abundances. We analyze stasis with various machine learning techniques on the full $2N$-dimensional space of decay rates and abundances, which serve as inputs to the system of Boltzmann equations that governs the dynamics. We construct a differentiable Boltzmann solver to maximize the number of stasis $e$-folds $\mathcal{N}$. High-stasis configurations obtained by gradient ascent motivate log-uniform distributions on rates and abundances to accompany power-law distributions of previous works. We demonstrate that random configurations drawn from these families of distributions regularly exhibit many $e$-folds of stasis. We additionally use them as priors in a Bayesian analysis conditioned on stasis, using stochastic variational inference with normalizing flows to model the posterior. All three numerical analyses demonstrate the generality of stasis and point to a new model in which the rates and abundances are exponential in the species index. We show that the exponential model solves the exact stasis equations, is an attractor, and satisfies $\mathcal{N}\propto N$, exhibiting inflation-level $e$-folding with a relatively low number of species. This is contrasted with the $\mathcal{N}\propto \log(N)$ scaling of power-law models. Finally, we discuss implications for the emergent string conjecture and string axiverse.

Anomalous contribution to galactic rotation curves due to stochastic spacetime

Abstract:We consider a proposed alternative to quantum gravity, in which the spacetime metric is treated as classical, even while matter fields remain quantum. Consistency of the theory necessarily requires that the metric evolve stochastically. Here, we show that this stochastic behaviour leads to a modification of general relativity at low accelerations. In the low acceleration regime, the variance in the acceleration produced by the gravitational field is high in comparison to that produced by the Newtonian potential, and acts as an entropic force, causing a deviation from Einstein's theory of general relativity. We show that in this "diffusion regime", the entropic force acts from a gravitational point of view, as if it were a contribution to the matter distribution. We compute modifications to the expectation value of the metric via the path integral formalism, and find a stochastic contribution which corresponds to a cosmological constant, anti-correlated with a contribution which has been used to fit galactic rotation curves without dark matter. We caution that a greater understanding of this effect is needed before conclusions can be drawn, most likely through numerical simulations, and provide a template for computing the deviation from general relativity which serves as an experimental signature of the Brownian motion of spacetime.

Abstract:We introduce a stochastic multi-photon dynamics on reciprocal space. Assuming isotropy, we derive the diffusion limit for a tagged photon to be a nonlinear Markov process on frequency. The nonlinearity stems from the stimulated emission. In the case of Compton scattering with thermal electrons, the limiting process describes the dynamical fluctuations around the Kompaneets equation. More generally, we construct a photon frequency diffusion process which enables to include nonequilibrium effects. Modifications of the Planck Law may thus be explored, where we focus on the low-frequency regime.

Curvaton distribution from stochastic inflation

Abstract:The curvaton paradigm can realise a part of or all the observed curvature perturbation. Based on the stochastic formalism of inflation and closed-form exact distributions therein, the distribution of the curvature perturbation is presented in an analytical manner by identifying a test field with a curvaton. The parameter space consisting of the decay rate and the mass of the curvaton is studied to discuss the probability that the curvaton can contribute to the curvature perturbation in a non-negligible way.

Abstract:Interpreting the cosmological constant as the energy of the vacuum and using a gravitational decoupling approach leads to a new Kerr--anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole. The metric of the new Kerr--AdS is simpler than the standard Kerr--AdS and exhibits richer geometry, where the effects of rotation appear as warped curvature. We investigate the relationship between unstable photon orbits and thermodynamic phase transitions in this new Kerr--AdS black hole background. We derive an exact expression for various thermodynamic properties, including mass ($M$), Hawking temperature ($T$), entropy ($S$), heat capacity ($C$), and free energy ($G$), by relating the negative cosmological constant to positive pressure through the equation $P = -\Lambda/(8 \pi) = 3/(8 \pi l^2)$, where $l$ represents the horizon radius, and by introducing its conjugate variable as the thermodynamic volume $V$. When $P < P_c$, black holes with $C_P > 0$ are thermodynamically stable, while those with $C_P \leq 0$ are unstable. Our analysis of the Gibbs free energy reveals a phase transition from small, globally unstable black holes to large, globally stable ones. Additionally, investigating the system's $P$-$V$ criticality and determining the critical exponents shows that our system shares similarities with a Van der Waals (vdW) fluid. In the reduced parameter space, we observe non-monotonic behavior of the photon sphere radius and the critical impact parameter when the pressure is below its critical value. Furthermore, we present the distribution of critical points in parameter space and derive a fitting formula for the coexistence curve.

Abstract:We consider the Heisenberg-Euler action for an electromagnetic field in vacuum, which includes quantum corrections to the Maxwell equations induced by photon-photon scattering. We show that, in some configurations, the plane monochromatic waves become unstable, due to the appearance of secularities in the dynamical equations. These secularities can be treated using a multiscale approach, introducing a slow time variable. The amplitudes of the plane electromagnetic waves satisfy a system of ordinary differential nonlinear equations in the slow time. The analysis of this system shows that, due to the effect of photon-photon scattering, in the unstable configurations the electromagnetic waves oscillate periodically between left-hand-sided and right-hand-sided polarizations. Finally, we discuss the physical implications of this finding, and the possibility of disclosing traces of this effect in optical experiments.

Cosmological Stasis from Dynamical Scalars: Tracking Solutions and the Possibility of a Stasis-Induced Inflation

Abstract:It has recently been realized that many theories of physics beyond the Standard Model give rise to cosmological histories exhibiting extended epochs of cosmological stasis. During such epochs, the abundances of different energy components such as matter, radiation, and vacuum energy each remain fixed despite cosmological expansion. In previous analyses of the stasis phenomenon, these different energy components were modeled as fluids with fixed, unchanging equations of state. In this paper, by contrast, we consider more realistic systems involving dynamical scalars which pass through underdamping transitions as the universe expands. Indeed, such systems might be highly relevant for BSM scenarios involving higher-dimensional bulk moduli and inflatons. Remarkably, we find that stasis emerges even in such situations, despite the appearance of time-varying equations of state. Moreover, this stasis includes several new features which might have important phenomenological implications and applications. For example, in the presence of an additional "background" energy component, we find that the scalars evolve into a "tracking" stasis in which the stasis equation of state automatically tracks that of the background. This phenomenon exists even if the background has only a small initial abundance. We also discuss the intriguing possibility that our results might form the basis of a new "Stasis Inflation" scenario in which no ad-hoc inflaton potential is needed and in which there is no graceful-exit problem. Within such a scenario, the number of e-folds of cosmological expansion produced is directly related to the hierarchies between physical BSM mass scales. Moreover, non-zero matter and radiation abundances can be sustained throughout the inflationary epoch.

Scalar Perturbations in Nonsingular Universes from Interacting Vacuum

Abstract:In this paper we examine the stability of scalar perturbations in nonsingular models which emerge from an interacting vacuum component. The analysis developed in this paper relies on two phenomenological choices for the energy exchange between a nonrelativistic fluid and a vacuum component. In both scenarios it can be shown that closed models may furnish nonsingular orbits of physical interest in phase space once a decelerated past era is connected to a graceful exit to late-time acceleration. Regarding such configurations as background spacetimes we introduce scalar perturbations in order to examine the stability of these models in a high energy domain. We explicitly show that the vacuum perturbation is not an independent variable and diverges as dynamics approaches the bounce. This feature assigns a rather unstable signature to the dynamics making the choices for the energy transfer ill defined at least for nonsingular configurations at the bounce scale.

Resonant Graviton-Photon Conversion with Stochastic Magnetic Field in the Expanding Universe

Abstract:We investigate graviton-photon oscillations sourced by cosmological magnetic fields from Gertsenshtein effect. We adopt a robust perturbative approach and we find that the conversion probability from graviton to photon can be resonantly enhanced in monochromatic, multi-chromatic and scale invariant spectrum models of stochastic magnetic field fluctuations. In addition, the expansion of the Universe acts as a decoherence factor, which demands a natural discretization scheme along the line of sight. Including also decoherence from cosmic acceleration, we find that conversion probabilities for stochastic magnetic fields are completely different than results predicted from existing magnetic domain-like models in a wide range of magnetic strengths and coherence lengths. Resonances can be tested by radio telescopes as a probe of high frequency gravitational wave sources and primordial magnetogenesis mechanisms.

Abstract:We introduce a multifield dark energy model with a nonflat field-space metric, in which one field is dynamical while the others have constant spatial gradients. The model is predictive at the background level, leading to an early dark energy component at high redshifts and a suppressed fraction of late-time anisotropy. Both features have simple expressions in terms of the curvature scale of the field-space, and correspond to stable points in the phase space of possible solutions. Because of the coupling between time and space-dependent scalar fields, vector field perturbations develop tachyonic instabilities at scales below the Hubble radius, thus being potentially observable in the number count of galaxies. Overall, the presence of a nontrivial field-space curvature also leads to the appearance of instabilities on scalar perturbations, which can impact the matter density distribution at large scales. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.123539 © 2024 American Physical Society
