Abstract:The paper presents a 2D phenomenological model to characterize the magneto-mechanical coupled behavior and its temperature dependences for martensitic variant reorientation in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys. A set of state variables are chosen to describe different microscopic mechanisms, and the evolution rules for the state variables are determined by minimizing the thermodynamic potential. The modified Landau free energy function is employed to account for the hysteretic switching between martensitic variants. It is assumed that the local switching thresholds are distributed due to the non-uniform internal stress throughout the specimen. The governing equation for martensite reorientation is then homogenized by taking this distribution property into account. The concept of density reassignment is also deployed to improve the modeling accuracy for partial reorientations. To validate the model capability, the model formulation is numerically implemented for the typical loading condition (i.e., uniaxial stress and a perpendicular magnetic field). As one of the superiorities, the temperature-dependent properties are remarked for the proposed model as well. Comparisons between the model predictions and the experimental results demonstrate the model capability in addressing the magneto-mechanical couplings and the temperature dependences of martensite reorientation.
A model of phase transition from austenite to martensite in single-crystal NiMnGa alloys

Abstract:A model is presented for the description of shape memory effect due to the thermoelastic martensite transformation induced by temperature, stress and magnetic field in ferromagnetic NiMnGa alloys. A cosine model on the basis of thermodynamic principle is developed to describe the structural distortion of the lattice in the complex coupled field. The magnetic-field-induced stress is introduced and the equivalence principal is employed for the mechanical and magnetoelastic deformation to represent the reorientation of the martensitic variants. The comparison between the theoretical and experimental results shows that the theory provides a good quantitative description of the material peculiar behavior.
Magnetostriction in Antiferromagnets

Abstract:We consider magnetostriction in magnetic materials. Starting from a microscopic lattice model of the magneto-elastic coupling, we derive the continuum magnetostriction Hamiltonian in cubic ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. In ferromagnets, our results agree with established results. In antiferromagnets, we find a new central contribution which reflects the spin ordering. The additional term is essential in certain antiferromagnets where magnetic moments order in antiparallel ferromagnetic planes characterized by a normal axis. In such antiferromagnets, we predict that the magnetostrictive strain depends on the direction of the normal axis. Our findings are relevant for materials such as NiO and CoO, where there is a new spin-structure dependent strain, but not in RbMnF$_3$. We propose an experimental procedure to verify the importance of our findings in NiO that can be readily generalized to other materials. We also generalize the theory to include long-wavelength magnetoelastic coupling. We expect that the spin-structure dependent term critically affects the magnon-phonon coupling.

Abstract:The antiperovskite functional compound CuNMn3 exhibits magnetostriction below the non-collinear ferromagnetic (FM)-paramagnetic (PM) transition (accompanied by a martensitic transformation). After the substitution of Mn for Cu, martensitic transformation is decoupled from FM transition. Meanwhile, the tetragonality of the martensitic phase and the magnetostriction are weakened. The combined analysis indicates that the spin, charge, and lattice are closely coupled around martensitic transformation temperature (TMS). The low-temperature martensitic phase is associated with a metastable magnetic state characterized by small magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Additionally, the depression of TMS with introducing the Mn dopant is revelatory for the development of low-temperature negative thermal expansion material. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Electrically-driven phase transition in magnetite nanostructures

Abstract:Magnetite (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$), an archetypal transition metal oxide, has been used for thousands of years, from lodestones in primitive compasses[1] to a candidate material for magnetoelectronic devices.[2] In 1939 Verwey[3] found that bulk magnetite undergoes a transition at T$_{V}$ $\approx$ 120 K from a high temperature "bad metal" conducting phase to a low-temperature insulating phase. He suggested[4] that high temperature conduction is via the fluctuating and correlated valences of the octahedral iron atoms, and that the transition is the onset of charge ordering upon cooling. The Verwey transition mechanism and the question of charge ordering remain highly controversial.[5-11] Here we show that magnetite nanocrystals and single-crystal thin films exhibit an electrically driven phase transition below the Verwey temperature. The signature of this transition is the onset of sharp conductance switching in high electric fields, hysteretic in voltage. We demonstrate that this transition is not due to local heating, but instead is due to the breakdown of the correlated insulating state when driven out of equilibrium by electrical bias. We anticipate that further studies of this newly observed transition and its low-temperature conducting phase will shed light on how charge ordering and vibrational degrees of freedom determine the ground state of this important compound.

Abstract:Abstract Magneto‐caloric materials offer the possibility to design environmentally friendlier thermal management devices compared to the widely used gas‐based systems. The challenges to develop this solid‐state based technology lie in the difficulty of finding materials presenting a large magneto‐caloric effect over a broad temperature span together with suitable secondary application parameters such as low heat capacity and high thermal conductivity. A series of compounds derived from the PbFCl structure is investigated using a combination of computational and experimental methods focusing on the change of cell volume in magnetic and non‐magnetic ground states. Scaling analysis of the magnetic properties determines that they are second order phase transition ferromagnets and that the magnetic entropy change is driven by the coupling of magneto‐elastic strain in the square‐net through the magnetic transition determined from neutron and synchrotron X‐ray diffraction. The primary and secondary application related properties are measured experimentally, and the c/a parameter is identified as an accurate proxy to control the magnetic transition. Chemical substitution on the square‐net affords tuning of the Curie temperature over a broad temperature span between 252 and 322 K. A predictive machine learning model for the c/a parameter is developed to guide future exploratory synthesis.

Abstract:Abstract Resistivity measurements are widely exploited to uncover electronic excitations and phase transitions in metallic solids. While single crystals are preferably studied to explore crystalline anisotropies, these usually cancel out in polycrystalline materials. Here we show that in polycrystalline Mn 3 Zn 0.5 Ge 0.5 N with non-collinear antiferromagnetic order, changes in the diagonal and, rather unexpected, off-diagonal components of the resistivity tensor occur at low temperatures indicating subtle transitions between magnetic phases of different symmetry. This is supported by neutron scattering and explained within a phenomenological model which suggests that the phase transitions in magnetic field are associated with field induced topological orbital momenta. The fact that we observe transitions between spin phases in a polycrystal, where effects of crystalline anisotropy are cancelled suggests that they are only controlled by exchange interactions. The observation of an off-diagonal resistivity extends the possibilities for realising antiferromagnetic spintronics with polycrystalline materials.

Abstract:The magnetic and structural transitions were investigated for a MnCoSi-based material system. MnCoSi has a double helical magnetic configuration and undergoes a structural transition between orthorhombic and hexagonal phases around 1165 K, while paramagnet Ni5Ge3 has a stable hexagonal structure. By chemically alloying MnCoSi with Ni5Ge3, magnetostructural transitions occurring between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, which can be induced by magnetic field, were obtained near room temperature. A relatively large magnetic entropy change (-21 J/kg K) was observed under a field of 5 T in (MnCoSi)(0.86)(Ni5Ge3)(0.14). (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We propose a model for non isothermal ferromagnetic phase transition based on a phase field approach, in which the phase parameter is related but not identified with the magnetization. The magnetization is split in a paramagnetic and in a ferromagnetic contribution, dependent on a scalar phase parameter and identically null above the Curie temperature. The dynamics of the magnetization below the Curie temperature is governed by the order parameter evolution equation and by a Landau-Lifshitz type equation for the magnetization vector. In the simple situation of a uniaxial magnet it is shown how the order parameter dynamics reproduces the hysteresis effect of the magnetization.

Abstract:Abstract We solve the magnetostriction strains for B20 helimagnets in the skyrmion crystal phase. By taking MnSi as an example, we reproduce its temperature–magnetic field ( T – B ) phase diagrams within a thermodynamic potential incorporating magnetoelastic interactions. The calculation shows that the normal strain ε 33 undergoes a sudden jump through a conical-skyrmion phase transition at any temperature. The corresponding experimental measurements for MnSi agree quantitatively well with the calculation.

Abstract:Thermally driven transitions between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases are characterized by critical behavior with divergent susceptibilities, long-range correlations, and spin dynamics that can span kHz to GHz scales as the material approaches the critical temperature $\mathrm{T_c}$, but it has proven technically challenging to probe the relevant length and time scales with most conventional measurement techniques. In this study, we employ scanning nitrogen-vacancy center based magnetometry and relaxometry to reveal the critical behavior of a high-$\mathrm{T_c}$ ferromagnetic oxide near its Curie temperature. Cluster analysis of the measured temperature-dependent nanoscale magnetic textures points to a 3D universality class with a correlation length that diverges near $\mathrm{T_c}$. Meanwhile, the temperature-dependent spin dynamics, measured through all optical relaxometry suggest that the phase transition is in the XY universality class. Our results capture both static and dynamic aspects of critical behavior, providing insights into universal properties that govern phase transitions in magnetic materials.

Abstract:Magnetostructural transition and the associated magnetocaloric effect were investigated for Mn1-xNi1-xCo2xSi1-xGex system. Co and Ge co-substitution drastically reduces the structural transition temperature from 1200 K to below room temperature. The magnetostructural transition occurring between a ferromagnetic and a paramagnetic state with a sharp jump in magnetization was realized, which is tunable in a broad Curie-temperature window spanning room temperature by altering the composition. Relatively large magnetic entropy changes and broad working temperature ranges were observed. These results suggest that the Mn1-xNi1-xCo2xSi1-xGex system can be an attractive platform for the tunable magnetostructural transition and the magnetocaloric effect. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The magnetic and structural transformations in the nickel crystal within the temperature range 470 < T< 631 K is studied on the basis of general phenomenological theory of spin-orbit phase transitions. A new phase transition at Tls \approx 570 K conditioned by cooperative relativistic interactions effect is prognosticated and the experimental information validating the existence of phase transition is presented.

Abstract:Mott metal-insulator transitions possess electronic, magnetic, and structural degrees of freedom promising next generation energy-efficient electronics. We report a previously unknown, hierarchically ordered state during a Mott transition and demonstrate correlated switching of functional electronic properties. We elucidate in-situ formation of an intrinsic supercrystal in a Ca2RuO4 thin film. Machine learning-assisted X-ray nanodiffraction together with electron microscopy reveal multi-scale periodic domain formation at and below the film transition temperature (TFilm ~ 200-250 K) and a separate anisotropic spatial structure at and above TFilm. Local resistivity measurements imply an intrinsic coupling of the supercrystal orientation to the material's anisotropic conductivity. Our findings add an additional degree of complexity to the physical understanding of Mott transitions, opening opportunities for designing materials with tunable electronic properties.

Magnetostructural Phase Transition Assisted by Temperature in Ag–αMnO2: a Density Functional Theory Study

Abstract:A crystalline material formed by parallel chains of silver atoms inside one-dimensional tunnels of hollandite manganese dioxide, Ag-αMnO2, is investigated through first-principles total energy calculations. Two different magnetic phases have been identified; one structure containing linear Ag chains with an antiferromagnetic ordering in the direction perpendicular to the MnO2 tunnels for T = 0 K (I4/m) and another configuration with zigzag Ag chains in a non-magnetic regime for higher temperatures (P21/c). According to phonon dispersions, both structures are stable. On the other hand, the structure with linear Ag chains in the non-magnetic state is unstable. A critical temperature of Tc≃ 125 K for the magnetostructural phase transition between the two stable structures I4/m and P21/c is predicted.
A Nonlinear Constitutive Model of Magneto-Thermo-Mechanical Coupling for Giant Magnetostrictive Materials

Abstract:The magnetostrictive strain-applied field curve typical of giant magnetostrictive materials is nonlinear and it is affected notably by prestress and temperature. A constitutive model to describe these properties is suggested in this paper. The model considered here is built on the Gibbs free energy function G(σij,Mk,T). Thermodynamic relations are used to obtain the constitutive expressions. Results based on the model show that the nonlinear property of magnetostrictive strain, the magnetization, and Young’s modulus under different prestress and temperature are in excellent agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the proposed model is convenient to be used in engineering applications since the parameters referred to the model can all be easily determined by experiments.
Phase Transition and Magneto-caloric Properties of Perovskites Pr$_{0.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$MnO$_{3}$: Modeling versus Experiments

Abstract:Experimental data obtained with the perovskite compounds Pr$_{0.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$MnO$_{3}$ show that the magnetization decreases with increasing temperature $T$ and undergoes a very sharp phase transition to the paramagnetic phase. The sharp transition in a system with a strong disorder is very rare, if not non-existent, in the theory of phase transition in systems of short-range pairwise exchange interactions. To understand this remarkable property, we introduce a model including a multispin (cluster-like) interaction between Mn ions, in addition to the usual pairwise exchange terms between these ions and the Mn-Pr interactions. We carry out Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Due to the doping, Mn$^{4+}$ with $S=3/2$ has the concentration of Pr$^{3+}$ ($S=1$) and Mn$^{3+}$ with $S=2$ has the Sr concentration. After attempts with different spin models and various Hamiltonians, we find that the many-state Ising spin model reproduces most of the experimental results. For the Hamiltonian, we find that pairwise interactions alone between ions cannot reproduce the sharp transition and the magnetization below $T_C$. We have to include a multispin interaction as said above. We fit the MC results with experimental data, and we estimate values of various exchange interactions in the system. These values are found to be in the range of those found in perovskite manganite compounts. We also study the applied-field effect on the magnetization in the temperature region below and above the transition temperature $T_C$. We calculate the magnetic entropy change $|\Delta S_m|$ and the Relative Cooling Power, for magnetic field from 1 to 3 Tesla. Our simulation results are in good agreement with experiments.

Abstract:Phase transitions of ferroelectromagnetic mode systems are studied by Monte Carlo simulation method. The results show that both magnetoelectric coupling and electrical field can result in a weak ferromagnetic order. Anomalous behaviors of the magnetization and polarization and their susceptibilities near the critical point are observed. A mean-field approach is developed to explain the simulated results, showing a qualitative consistency between them.

Abstract:The effect of an external magnetic field on the structural and magnetic properties of bond frustrated ZnCr2Se4 at low temperatures is investigated using magnetization, dielectric constants and thermal conductivity experiments. With an increase in the magnetic field H, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T-N is observed to shift progressively toward lower temperatures. The corresponding high temperature cubic (Fd<(3)overbar>m) to low temperature tetragonal (I4(1)amd) structural transition is tuned simultaneously due to the inherent strong spin-lattice coupling. In the antiferromagnetic phase, an anomaly at H-C2 defined as a steep downward peak in the derivative of the M-H curve is clearly drawn. It is found that T-N versus H and H-C2 versus T exhibit a consistent tendency, indicative of a field-induced tetragonal (I4(1)amd) to cubic (Fd (3) over barm) structural transition. The transition is further ubstantiated by the field-dependent dielectric constant and thermal conductivity measurements. We modify the T-H phase diagram, highlighting the coexistence of the paramagnetic state and ferromagnetic clusters between 100K and T-N.
