Abstract:The influence of the multi-boson effects on pion multiplicities, single-pion spectra and two-pion correlation functions is discussed in terms of an analytically solvable model. It is argued that spectacular multi-boson effects are likely to be observed only in the rare events containing sufficiently high density fluctuations. The possibilities of unlike particle correlations for a study of the space-time asymmetries in particle production, including the sequence of particle emission, are demonstrated.

The effect of non-equal emission times and space-time correlations on (anti-) nuclei production

Abstract:Light (anti-) nuclei are a powerful tool both in collider physics and astrophysics. In searches for new and exotic physics, the expected small astrophysical backgrounds at low energies make these antinuclei ideal probes for, e.g., dark matter. At the same time, their composite structure and small binding energies imply that they can be used in collider experiments to probe the hadronisation process and two-particle correlations. For the proper interpretation of such experimental studies, an improved theoretical understanding of (anti-) nuclei production in specific kinematic regions and detector setups is needed. In this work, we develop a coalescence framework for (anti-) deuteron production which accounts for both the emission volume and momentum correlations on an event-by-event basis. This framework goes beyond the equal-time approximation, which has been commonly assumed in femtoscopy experiments and (anti-) nucleus production models until now. Using PYTHIA~8 as an event generator, we find that the equal-time approximation leads to an error of O(10%) in low-energy processes like $\Upsilon$ decays, while the errors are negligible at LHC energies. The framework introduced in this work paves the way for tuning event generators to (anti-) nuclei measurements.

The imprint of conservation laws on correlated particle production

Abstract:The study of event-by-event fluctuations of net-baryon number in a subspace of full phase space is a promising direction for deciphering the structure of strongly interacting matter created in head-on collisions of relativistic heavy nuclei. Such fluctuations are generally suppressed by exact baryon number conservation. Moreover, the suppression is stronger if baryon number is conserved locally. In this report we present a conceptually new approach to quantify correlations in rapidity space between baryon-antibaryon, baryon-baryon, and antibaryon-antibaryon pairs and demonstrate their impact on net-baryon number fluctuations. For the special case of Gaussian rapidity distributions, we use the Cholesky factorization of the covariance matrix, while the general case is introduced by exploiting the well-known Metropolis and Simulated Annealing methods. The approach is based on the use of the canonical ensemble of statistical mechanics for baryon number and can be applied to study correlations between baryons as well as strange and/or charm hadrons. It can also be applied to describe relativistic nuclear collisions leading to the production of multi-particle final states. One application of our method is the search for formation of proton clusters at low collision energies emerging as a harbinger of the anticipated first-order chiral phase transition. In a first step, the results obtained are compared to the recent measurements from the CERN ALICE collaboration. Such investigations are key to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter and baryon production mechanisms at energy scales from several GeV to several TeV.

Abstract:This study explores the transverse momentum ($p_T$) dependencies of Symmetric and Asymmetric Correlations (SC and ASC) with one and two particles of interest in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV. Leveraging the AMPT model, the investigation delves into the sensitivity of these correlations to the final state effects, providing valuable insights into their potential for constraining the final state effects' $p_T$ dependencies. The HIJING model is employed as a benchmark for non-flow correlations, shedding light on their impact on interpreting SC and ASC data. Moreover, the study points out that differential SC and ASC with one and two particles of interest (POIs) typically incorporate contributions from event-plane angle fluctuations. Consequently, this work highlights the significance of SC and ASC with one and two POIs as valuable tools for investigating the $p_T$ nature of the final state effects and advocates for comprehensive experimental measurements across various beam energies and system sizes to enhance our understanding and provide additional constraints for theoretical models.

Abstract: A larger than expected forward-backward asymmetry in rapidity is observed in top quark pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron. The asymmetry is seen in both the top quark distribution $A_{FB}^t$ and in the distribution of charged leptons $A_{FB}^\ell$ from top quark decay. In this paper, we study the kinematic and dynamic aspects of the tight relationship of the two observables arising from the spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. We also consider two benchmark new physics models, an axigluon model and a flavor-changing $W^\prime$ model. These models could explain the values of both $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$. We emphasize the value of both measurements, and we conclude that a model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks is favored by the present data.
Long Range Energy-energy Correlator at the LHC

Abstract:We study the forward-backward azimuthal angular correlations of hadrons in association with multi-particle production in the central rapidity region in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. We apply the nucleon energy-energy correlator framework, where the spinning gluon distribution introduces a nontrivial $\cos(2\phi)$ asymmetries. We will demonstrate that the fundamental helicity structure of QCD amplitudes predicts a unique power counting rule: $\cos(2\phi)$ asymmetry starts at ${O}(\alpha_s^2)$ order for dijet, ${O}(\alpha_s)$ for three jet and ${O}(1)$ for four (and more) jet productions. Our results will help us to understand the long standing puzzle of nearside ridge behavior observed in high multiplicity events of $pp$ collisions at the LHC.

Studying baryon production using two-particle angular correlations

Abstract:Latest measurements of $\Delta\eta\Delta\varphi$ correlations of identified particles show differences in particle production between baryons and mesons. The correlation functions for mesons exhibit the expected peak dominated by effects of mini-jet fragmentation and are reproduced well by general purpose Monte Carlo generators. For baryon pairs (where both particles have the same baryon number) a surprising near-side anti-correlation structure is observed instead of a peak, implying that two such particles are rarely produced with similar momentum. These results present a challenge to the contemporary models and there is no definite theoretical explanation of the observation. In this proceedings an overview of the latest baryon correlation measurements yielding startling results are presented.

Time-reversal-odd phenomena in QCD

Abstract:Single-spin asymmetries were long thought to vanish in high-energy scattering processes because of their specific time-reversal behavior. Time-reversal-odd phenomena, however, appear naturally when one includes effects of intrinsic transverse momenta of partons. The partons, quarks and gluons, enter the description of high-energy scattering processes in correlators which contain quark and gluon fields. The correlators, parameterized in terms of distribution and fragmentation functions, constitute matrix elements of non-local field configurations. For transverse momentum dependent (TMD) correlators the non-locality is along a light-front, in contrast to the non-locality along the light-cone for collinear correlators, integrated over transverse momenta. The TMD correlators require a careful treatment to assure color gauge invariance, leading to nontrivial gauge links connecting the parton fields. These give rise to time-reversal-odd phenomena, showing up as single spin and azimuthal asymmetries. The gauge links, arising from multi-gluon initial and final state interactions, depend on the color flow in the process, which has consequences for issues like universality and factorization.

Abstract:We present the first experimental method to directly correlate initial participant asymmetry with final-state multiplicity to quantify contribution of preferential emission to the rapidity-odd component of pseudorapidity distribution of produced particles in heavy-ion collisions. Within a transport model simulation, the correlator displays an increase from mid to large rapidities and from central to peripheral collisions. It also displays sensitivity to spectator dynamics, with its magnitude decreasing as more spectators undergo evaporation or fragmentation. The proposed correlator provides a powerful experimental tool to constrain particle production mechanisms and the space-time evolution of spectator matter in heavy-ion collisions

Features of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations based on event-by-event analysis in smoothed particle hydrodynamics

Abstract:We examine the space-time structure of the particle-emitting sources with fluctuating initial conditions in smoothed particle hydrodynamics. The two-pion correlation functions of single events for the sources exhibit event-by-event fluctuations. The large event-by-event fluctuations and wide distributions of the error-inverse-weighted fluctuations between the HBT correlation functions of single and mixed events are important features for the sources with the fluctuating initial conditions. The root-mean-square of the weighted fluctuations is a signal to detect the inhomogeneity of the systems produced in high energy heavy ion collisions.

Abstract:Recent studies have shown a potential correlation between the entanglement of initial state partons in elementary particle collisions, as conceptualized by contemporary quantum and particle theory, and the final state multiplicity distribution of hadrons produced in experiments like those at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It has been proposed that this relation between states can be demonstrated in a measurement of entropy. By showing equality between entanglement entropy in the initial state and thermodynamic entropy in the final state, we hope to demonstrate that not only is entanglement the driving mechanism behind matter generation, but also the thermal-like behavior seen in high energy particle collisions.

Spin asymmetries for $C$-even quarkonium production as a probe of gluon distributions

Abstract:Within the framework of transverse momentum dependent factorization in combination with nonrelativistic QCD, we study charmonium and bottomonium production in hadronic collisions. We focus on quarkonium states with even charge conjugation, for which the color-singlet production mechanism is expected to be also dominant in the small transverse momentum region, $q_T^2 \ll 4 M_{c,b}^2$. It is shown that the distributions of linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized, longitudinally and transversely polarized protons contribute to the cross sections for scalar and pseudoscalar quarkonia in a very distinctive, parity-dependent way, whereas their effects on higher angular momentum states are strongly suppressed. We derive analytical expressions for single and double spin asymmetries, which would allow for the direct extraction of the gluon transverse momentum dependent distributions, mirroring the phenomenological studies of the Drell-Yan processes aimed at the extraction of their quark counterparts. By adopting Gaussian models for the gluon TMDs, which fulfill without saturating everywhere their positivity bounds, we provide numerical predictions for the transverse single-spin asymmetries. These observables could be measured at LHCSpin, the fixed target experiment planned at the LHC.

Abstract:Two particle azimuthal correlations are studied in 4.2A GeV C+Ta collisions observed with the 2-m propane bubble chamber exposed at JINR Dubna Synchrophasotron. The correlations are analyzed both for protons and negative pions, and their dependence on the collision centrality, rapidity and rapidity difference is investigated. It is found that protons show a weak back-to-back correlations, while a side-by-side correlations are observed for negative pions. Restricting both protons to the target or projectile fragmentation region, the side-by-side correlations are observed for protons also. Using the two particle correlation function, the flow analysis is performed and intensity of directed flow is determined without event-by event estimation of the reaction plane.
Two-particle angular correlations of identified particles in pp and p--Pb collisions at LHC energies with ALICE

Abstract:The two-particle angular correlations in the $\Delta$y,$\Delta\varphi$ space provide valuable insights into the properties of hadronization mechanisms and quark-gluon plasma properties. The correlation functions are influenced by several physical sources, including mini-jet correlations, Bose-Einstein quantum statistics, resonance decays, conservation of energy and momentum, and other factors. Each correlation source has unique properties, and therefore each correlation function has a distinct form depending on transverse momentum and/or multiplicity. Previous results from angular correlation analysis of pp collisions at the LHC energies indicate an anticorrelation for pairs of baryons of the same sign in $\Delta\eta,\Delta\varphi$ space. This contradicts the predictions of Monte Carlo models, such as PYTHIA8 and EPOS. This study aims to investigate this behavior by exploring the correlation functions of different charge combinations of the detected particles (specifically, $\rm{\pi^{\pm}}$, $\rm{K^{\pm}}$, and $\rm{p}$$\bar{\rm{p}}$) and multiplicity classes in the $\Delta$y$,\Delta\varphi$ space for pp and p--Pb collisions at LHC energies. In addition, the study includes a comparison of the results obtained from both collision systems.

Asymmetries in heavy quark pair and dijet production at an EIC

Abstract:Asymmetries in heavy quark pair and dijet production in electron-proton collisions allow studies of gluon TMDs in close analogy to studies of quark TMDs in semi-inclusive DIS. Here we present expressions for azimuthal asymmetries for both unpolarized and transversely polarized proton cases and consider the maximal asymmetries allowed. The latter are found to be rather sizeable, except in certain kinematic limits which are pointed out. In addition, we consider the small-x limit and expectations from a McLerran-Venugopalan model for unpolarized and linearly polarized gluons and from a perturbative, large transverse momentum calculation for the T-odd gluon TMDs. Comparison to related observables at RHIC and LHC is expected to provide valuable information about the process dependence of the gluon TMDs. In particular this will offer the possibility of a sign change test of the gluon Sivers TMD and two other T-odd gluon TMDs. This provides additional motivation for studies of azimuthal asymmetries in heavy quark pair and dijet production at a future Electron-Ion Collider.

Abstract:We investigate all the possible spin asymmetries that can occur in back-to-back electron-jet production with hadron observed inside a jet in electron-proton collisions. We derive the factorization formalism for all spin asymmetries and perform phenomenological studies for the future electron ion collider kinematics. We illustrate that the back-to-back electron-jet production opens up new opportunities to study transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions and distribution functions.
