Abstract:Non-conjugated polymer-derived functional nanocomposites are one of the important ways to develop multifunctional hybrids. By increasing the degree of crosslinking, their photophysical properties can be improved. PbS is a class of narrow bandgap infrared active materials. To avoid aggregation and passivation of the surface defects of PbS nanomaterials, a large number of organic and inorganic ligands are usually used. In this study, PbS/C composite nanosheets were synthesized with Pb2+ ion-crosslinked sodium alginate gel by one-pot carbonization. The resulting nanosheets were coated on untreated A4 printing paper, and the electrodes were the graphite electrodes with 5B pencil drawings. The photocurrent signals of the products were measured using typical 650, 808, 980, and 1064 nm light sources. The results showed that the photocurrent switching signals were effectively extracted in the visible and near-infrared regions, which was attributed to the mutual passivation of defects during the in situ preparation of PbS and carbon nanomaterials. At the same time, the resulting nanocomposite exhibited electrical switching responses to the applied strain to a certain extent. The photophysical and defect passivation mechanisms were discussed based on the aggregation state of the carbon hybrid and the interfacial electron interaction. This material would have potential applications in broadband flexible photodetectors, tentacle sensors, or light harvesting interdisciplinary areas. This study provided a facile approach to prepare a low-cost hybrid with external stimulus response and multifunctionality. These results show that the interfacial charge transfer is the direct experimental evidence of interfacial interaction, and the regulation of interfacial interaction can improve the physical and chemical properties of nanocomposites, which can meet the interdisciplinary application. The interdisciplinary and application of more non-conjugated polymer systems in some frontier areas will be expanded upon.
Synthesis and Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence of PbS Nanospheres.

Abstract:The uniform PbS nanospheres with an average diameter of 110 nm were synthesized via a sonochemical approach using PVP as a template reagent in aqueous solution. The chemiluminescence of the as-prepared PbS induced by electrochemical method was investigated. Stable electrogenerated chemiluminescence was first observed from the PbS nanospheres in the existence of peroxodisulfate ions.
Probing Excitons in Ultrathin PbS Nanoplatelets with Enhanced Near-Infrared Emission

Abstract:Strongly quantum-confined 2D colloidal PbS nanoplatelets (NPLs) are highly interesting materials for near-infrared optoelectronic applications. Here, we use ultrafast transient optical absorption spectroscopy to study the characteristics and dynamics of photoexcited excitons in ultrathin PbS NPLs with a cubic (rock-salt) structure. The NPLs are synthesized at near room temperature from lead oleate and thiourea precursors and show an optical absorption onset at 680 nm (1.8 eV) as well as photoluminescence at 720 nm (1.7 eV). By treating PbS NPLs with CdCl2 in a post-synthetic step, their photoluminescence quantum yield is strongly enhanced from 1.4 % to 19.4 %. The surface treatment leads to an increased lead to sulfur ratio in the structures and associated reduced non-radiative recombination. Exciton-phonon interactions in pristine and CdCl2 treated PbS NPLs at frequencies of 1.8 and 2.2 THz are apparent from coherent oscillations in the measured transient absorption spectra. This study is an important step forward in unraveling and controlling the optical properties of IV-VI semiconductor NPLs.

Abstract:This work demonstrates the surface plasmon (SP)-exciton coupling effect on the photoluminescence (PL) enhancement in CsPbBr3 nanocrystal (NC) at PMMA/Ag nanostructure (NS) in wide spectral range excitation. The spectra dependent time resolved PL measurement reveals that the emission photons are from the recombination of localized excitons and the PL enhancement can be attributed to the near-field effect, which is also supported by evidence that the enhancements are nearly the same in the whole excitation wavelength from 200 nm to 900 nm. The non-spectral dependence of the enhancement factor suggests that there is the same dynamic process of hot electrons in CsPbBr3 NC in multiphoton excitation. The hot electrons will relax into localized exciton states, and the electric field generated by SPs will enhance the radiative recombination of excitons. This work will have benefits for revealing dynamics of hot electron relaxing and interactions in multi-photon absorption, as well as the inner mechanism of SP coupling effects.
Enhancing Luminescence and Photostability of CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals Via Surface Passivation with Silver Complex

Abstract:We demonstrate that Ag(I) complex can fix bromide on the nano crystal surface, reduce surface trap density, and as a result efficiently passivate the surface of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. This passivation makes the photoluminescence (PL) intensity increase several times. The PL kinetics study clearly shows that the decay lifetime increased after the passivation. TEM and XPS analyses demonstrated the existence of Ag on the nanocrystal surface. In addition, we utilize single-particle spectroscopy combined with in situ light analysis to further confirm the PL enhancement effect. On the contrary, the passivation leads to the extraordinary photostability of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, with 80% PL intensity retained after UV illumination for 5 days under ambient conditions.
Enhanced Photoluminescence Properties of Bismuth Sulfide Nanocrystals with Core-Shell Ag@SiO_2

Abstract:A novel self-assembled hybrid nanocompound consisting of bismuth sulfide nanocrystals (Bi2S3 NCs) and Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) is used to study the enhancement of photoluminescence by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Ag@SiO2 core-shell NPs were prepared by deposition of silica onto the surface of Ag NPs through the sol-gel method and followed by surface modification via 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane for the coming conjugation with Bi2S3 NCs. We propose the photoluminescence enhancement by the LSPR effect through adjusting the thickness of silica shell and the Ag@SiO2 NP concentration. By modulating the thickness of the silica shell and the concentration of Ag NPs, the maximum enhancement of a 5.7 fold can be reached with the thickness of an SiO2 shell at 22.5 nm. A clear red shift of the emission peaks in the Bi2S3 NCs-Ag@SiO2 NPs hybrid structures is observed. Such a metal-enhanced Bi2S3 quantum dot (QD) fluorescence system may have promising applications in optoelectronic device.

Fluorescence enhancement of PbS colloidal quantum dots from silicon metasurfaces sustaining bound states in the continuum

Abstract:PbS colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) can be considered a promising lighting material, but their emission performance is mired by defect sites, strong photo-induced activity, and interaction with the environment. Here, we utilize periodic silicon metasurface sustaining a symmetry-protected bound state in the continuum to enhance the near-infrared emission of PbS CQDs at room temperature. In the experimental investigation, it is observed that the fluorescence of the coated PbS CQDs is enhanced by 10 times by the fabricated metasurface, and the emission peak has a quality factor up to 251 at wavelength 1408 nm. Meanwhile, the potential of this work in sensing is demonstrated by showing that the enhanced emission is disturbed by the introduction of sparse gold nanoparticles. In all, this work confirms that dielectric metasurfaces sustaining bound states in the continuum can be adopted to efficiently improve the emission performance of PbS CQDs which may find various practical applications including on-chip silicon-based optical sources and integrated sensors.

The surface chemistry of colloidal lead halide perovskite nanowires

Abstract:This study explored the interplay between the ligand–surface chemistry of colloidal CsPbBr3 nanowires (NWs) and their optical properties. The ligand equilibrium was probed using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and by perturbing the equilibrium via dilution, the gradual removal of ligands from the CsPbBr3 surface was observed. This removal was correlated with an increase in the surface defect density, as suggested by a broadening of the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum, a decrease in the PL quantum yield (PLQY), and quenching of the PL decay. These results highlight similar surface binding between the traditional CsPbBr3 quantum dots and our NWs, thereby expanding the scope of well-established ligand chemistry to a relatively unexplored nanocrystal morphology. By controlling the dilution factor, it was revealed that CsPbBr3 NWs achieve a PLQY of 72% ± 2% and a relatively long average PL lifetime of 400 ± 10 ns, without relying on additional surface passivation techniques, such as ligand exchange.

Abstract:PbS-doped glasses are prepared. Absorption and luminescence spectra show that both the absorption and infrared emission can be tuned widely by thermal treatment conditions. Optical amplification at 1300 nm is observed, and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) spectrum is also measured to confirm the optical gain from PbS quantum dots.
Acceleration of Near-IR Emission through Efficient Surface Passivation in Cd3P2 Quantum Dots

Abstract:Fast near-IR (NIR) emitters are highly valuable in telecommunications and biological imaging. The most established NIR emitters are epitaxially grown InxGa1-xAs quantum dots (QDs), but epitaxial growth has several disadvantages. Colloidal synthesis is a viable alternative that produces a few NIR-emitting materials, but they suffer from long photoluminescence (PL) times. These long PL times are intrinsic in some NIR materials (PbS, PbSe) but are attributed to emission from bright trapped carrier states in others. We show that Cd3P2 QDs possess substantial trap emission with radiative times >101 ns. Surface passivation through shell growth or coordination of Lewis acids is shown to accelerate the NIR emission from Cd3P2 QDs by decreasing the amount of trap emission. This finding brings us one step closer to the application of colloidally synthesized QDs as quantum emitters.

Abstract:Coated CdSe/CdS nanocrystals have been synthesized through a new reaction routine in micelle solution. High-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images demonstrated the monodispersity and core-shell structure of CdSe/CdS nanocrystals. After CdSe nanocrystals were passivated by CdS shell, the reduced photoluminescence (PL) intensity of surface states and enhanced band-edge emission have been observed. The enhanced photo-chemical stability of coated CdSe/CdS nanocrystals has also been demonstrated from photo oxidation experiments. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Growth and photoluminescence properties of PbS nanocubes

Abstract:This paper reports the synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals of PbS through a facile and inexpensive synthetic route between lead acetate [Pb(Ac)2·3H2O] and dithioglycol (HSCH2CH2SH) without any surfactant. The products were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The size of cube-shaped PbS nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the relative amount of Pb(Ac)2·3H2O and dithioglycol. Smaller cube-shaped PbS nanocrystals were obtained at higher sulfur content in the reaction system. The nanometre-sized single crystals of PbS measure ~83 nm × 59 nm × 22 nm and 39 nm × 10 nm × 7 nm, for lead acetate:dithioglycol ratios of 1:0.375 (denoted as PbS-1) and 1:1.5 (denoted as PbS-2), respectively, when a mixture of NaOH solution of lead acetate and ethyl alcohol solution of dithioglycol is maintained at 220 °C for 4 h in a Teflon-lined autoclave. XRD patterns and HRTEM images confirm the crystalline structure of the PbS crystals. TEM helped to determine the dimension of the single crystals. Raman, XPS and IR helped to further demonstrate the purity of the as-synthesized samples. The optical absorption spectra of suspensions of the these crystals in glycol show shifts in absorption band edge for as-prepared sample PbS-1 from 246 to 271 nm and for PbS-2 from 246 to 275 nm, after four days of storage, respectively. The photoluminescence peaks from the two samples are located at 434 and 433 nm for photoexcitation radiation of 315–355 nm, thus exhibiting a Stokes shift compared with band edge energy. The principal contribution of this work is that the nanometre-size PbS single crystals are prepared without using a surfactant or templating agent. The formation of a five-membered ring via the chelation between the Pb2+ ion and dithioglycol is considered to be crucial in this mechanism.

In situ passivation for high-quality PbS colloidal quantum dots synthesized using a PbBr2 precursor

Abstract:PbS quantum dots (QDs) have received considerable attention due to their broad and tunable absorption spectra, and because of the in situ passivation effect from PbBr 2 , the PbS QDs synthesized by PbBr 2 precursor aroused many scholars' interest. However, its synthesis process is complex, and the reaction mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we simplified the synthesis process by introducing oleic acid (OA) and 1-octadecene (ODE) into the lead precursor solution. Monodisperse PbS QDs ranging in size from 3.6 nm to 5.4 nm were synthesized successfully by adjusting the contents of ODE and oleylamine. Moreover, the use of PbBr 2 as a lead precursor effectively reduced the surface defects of the PbS QDs by replacing surface hydroxyl (OH) groups. This resulted in improvement of the photoluminescence (PL) decay lifetime and stability of the QDs. Finally, the synthesized QDs were successfully applied in the solar cells. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of leveraging the advantages of PbS QDs, particularly in the photovoltaic industry.

Abstract:With a tunable size-dependent photoluminescence (PL) over a wide infrared wavelength range, lead chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) have attracted significant scientific and technological interest. Nevertheless, the investigation of intrinsic exciton photophysics at the single-QD level has remained a challenge. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of PL properties for individual core/shell PbS/CdS QDs emissive near 1.0 eV. In contrast to the sub-meV spectral linewidths observed for II/VI QDs, PbS/CdS QDs are predicted to possess broad homogeneous linewidths. Performing spectroscopy at cryogenic (4 K) temperatures, we provide direct evidence confirming theoretical predictions, showing that intrinsic linewidths for PbS/CdS QDs are in the range of 8-25 meV, with an average of 16.4 meV. In addition, low-temperature, single-QD spectroscopy reveals a broad low-energy side emission attributable to optical as well as localized acoustic phonon-assisted transitions. By tracking single QDs from 4 K to 250 K we were able to probe tempera-ture-dependent evolutions of emission energy, linewidth and line shape. Finally, polariza-tion-resolved PL imaging showed that PbS/CdS QDs are characterized by a 3D emission dipole, in contrast with the 2D dipole observed for CdSe QDs.

Synthesis of high aspect ratio quantum-size CdS nanorods and their surface-dependent photoluminescence

Abstract:Colloidal CdS nanorods with diameters near 4 nm and narrow size distributions ( approximately +/-10%) were synthesized up to 300 nm long by a sequential reactant injection technique that utilizes phosophonic acids as capping ligands. The phosphonic acid strongly passivates the nonpolar CdS surfaces and sequential reactant injection provides controlled CdS formation kinetics to enable heterogeneous and facet-selective CdS deposition on the more reactive {002} surfaces. With this process, the nanorod length can be systematically increased by increasing reactant addition to extend nanorod growth. The phosphonic acid concentration, however, is quite important, as "low" concentrations allow radial deposition and branching to occur. These high aspect ratio (>100) CdS nanorods luminesce with relatively high efficiencies of 10.8% quantum yield at room temperature. The luminescence, however, mostly arises from trap-related recombination, and the emission is significantly red-shifted from the absorption edge. Various surface passivation treatments were explored to eliminate trap emission and increase the luminescence quantum yield. Thiol and amine passivation both significantly reduced trap emission and enhanced band-edge emission, but the total luminescence quantum yields dropped significantly, with a maximum measured value of 1.5% for the amine-passivated CdS nanorods.

Abstract:High quality InP nanocrystals in the size range from 1 to 8 nm were synthesize at relatively low temperature (< 190 degrees C). The low temperature was enabled by the activation of In carboxylate precursors with fatty amines. The reduced temperature enabled the elimination of the thorough degassing step usually needed in the existing schemes. By simply varying the concentration and chain length of the ligand and activation reagents, the absorption peak position was tuned continuously from 390 to 720 nm without prolonged heating. This new synthetic scheme further enabled the direct synthesis of InP/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals in a one-pot fashion. The resulting InP/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals can emit from about 450 to 750 nm, with a quantum yield as high as over 40%. The bright core/shell nanocrystals were stable in air and could be dispersed in water with hydrophilic thiols ligands. The thiol ligand replacement did not quench the emission, and the resulting water-soluble nanocrystals were stable under ambient conditions for at least 3 months.

Abstract:The colloidal all-inorganic CsPbX3(X=I, Br, Cl) perovskite nanocrystals(NCs) with unique optical properties have attracted considerable attention in the field of semiconductor nanocrystals, but their application is hindered by stability issues caused by surface defects and environmental factors. Usually with inert layer encapsulation, the stability of CsPbX3 NCs can be significantly enhanced. However, due to the loss of highly dynamic oleic acid/oleylamine ligands, it is usually accompanied by a decrease in the photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY). Herein, we report a facile method for preparing CsPbBr3 NCs based green phosphors with high stability and bright emission. With modification of colloidal CsPbBr3 NCs by di-dodecyldimethylammonium bromide and sequent encapsulation in the as-synthesized mesoporous MOF-5, the green emitting phosphors with enhanced stability and a PLQY of 77% were obtained. The phosphors exhibit enhanced resistance against ambient oxygen, UV light, heat treatment and water. These excellent properties show the potential value of our prepared NCs as stable phosphors in light-emitting devices.

Abstract:Borosilicate glasses doped with PbO, ZnS, or PbS were fabricated to investigate the visible emissions (one located at 370 nm and another at 550 nm) observed in the PbO and ZnS codoped glass. Several series of glassy systems were designed to investigate the mechanism of above visible emissions. The absorption, photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra, and lifetime measurements were used to characterize all the emissions. The nanosecond level lifetimes for all the samples' 370 nm emissions ascribed the 370 nm emission to the glass defects. Measured lifetimes for the PbS quantum dots (QDs) in the glasses with an emission in the near‐infrared region which was about 8 μs was close to the values for the yellow emission, which confirmed the formation of PbS nanoclusters in the codoped glass was responsible for the yellow emission.
Surface Modification and Enhancement of Luminescence Due to Quantum Effects in Coated Cdse/Cuse Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Abstract:We report a new and low cost method to synthesize colloidal CdSe and coated CdSe/CuSe nanocrystals in aqueous solution. The results of structural characterization and optical measurements indicated that the good size control had been achieved. The photoluminescence study confirmed the surface passivation of CdSe core with CuSe outlayer and revealed strong enhancement of band-edge luminescence due to the quantum confinement in coated CdSe/CuSe nanocrystals.
