Abstract:Observed and simulated galaxies exhibit a significant variation in their velocity dispersion profiles. We examine the inner and outer slopes of stellar velocity dispersion profiles using integral field spectroscopy data from two surveys, SAMI (for $z < 0.115$) and CALIFA (for $z < 0.03$), comparing them with results from two cosmological hydrodynamic simulations: Horizon-AGN (for $z = 0.017$) and NewHorizon (for $z\lesssim1$). The simulated galaxies closely reproduce the variety of velocity dispersion slopes and stellar mass dependence of both inner and outer radii ($0.5\,r_{50}$ and $3\,r_{50}$) as observed, where $r_{50}$ stands for half-light radius. The inner slopes are mainly influenced by the relative radial distribution of the young and old stars formed in-situ: a younger center shows a flatter inner profile. The presence of accreted (ex-situ) stars has two effects on the velocity dispersion profiles. First, because they are more dispersed in spatial and velocity distributions compared to in-situ formed stars, it increases the outer slope of the velocity dispersion profile. It also causes the velocity anisotropy to be more radial. More massive galaxies have a higher fraction of stars formed ex-situ and hence show a higher slope in outer velocity dispersion profile and a higher degree of radial anisotropy. The diversity in the outer velocity dispersion profiles reflects the diverse assembly histories among galaxies.

Velocity of Galaxies with Different Luminosity

Abstract:We present the first determination of the pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies at different luminosity with the final release of the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). Our result surprisingly shows that the random velocities of the faint galaxies are very high, around 700, reaching similar values as the brightest galaxies. At intermediate luminosities slightly brighter than the characteristic luminosity M_⋆, the velocities exhibit a well defined steep minimum near 400. The result challenges the current halo model of galaxies of Yang et al. that was obtained by matching the clustering and luminosity function of 2dFGRS, and can be an important constraint in general on theories of galaxy formation, e.g., the semi-analytical model. Combining the observed luminosity dependence of clustering, our result implies that quite a fraction of faint galaxies are in massive halos of galaxy clusters as the brightest ones, but most of the M_⋆ galaxies are in galactic halos.
Galaxy Pairwise Velocity Distributions on Non-Linear Scales

Abstract:The redshift-space correlation function $\xi_s$ for projected galaxy separations $\simless 1h^{-1}$ Mpc can be expressed as the convolution of the real-space correlation function with the galaxy pairwise velocity distribution function (PVDF). An exponential PVDF yields the best fit to the $\xi_s$ measured from galaxy samples of different redshift surveys. We show that this exponential PVDF is not merely a fitting function but arises from well defined gravitational processes. Two ingredients conspire to yield a PVDF with a nearly exponential shape: (i) the number density $n(\sigma)$ of systems with velocity dispersion $\sigma$; (ii) the unrelaxed dynamical state of most galaxy systems. The former ingredient determines the exponential tail and the latter the central peak of the PVDF. We compare the $\xi_s$ measured on non-linear scales from galaxy samples of the CfA redshift surveys with different models of the PVDF convolved with the measured real-space correlation function. This preliminary comparison indicates that the agreement between model and observations depends strongly on both the underlying cosmological model and the internal dynamics of galaxy systems. Neither parameter dominates. Moreover, the agreement depends sensitively on the accuracy of the galaxy position and velocity measurements.
Constraints on the Velocity Profiles of Galaxies from Strong Lensing Statistics and Semi-Analytical Modelling of Galaxy Formation

Abstract:Semi-analytical models of galaxy formation can be used to predict the evolution of the number density of early-type galaxies as a function of the circular velocity at the virial radius, V-c,V-vir. Gravitational lensing probability and separation distribution on the other hand are sensitive to the velocity dispersion (or circular velocity) at about the effective radius. We adopt the singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE) lens model to estimate the velocity dispersion at the effective radius. The velocity dispersion from strong lensing based on the SIE, sigma(SIE) is then closely related to the observational central stellar velocity dispersion, sigma(cent); we have empirically sigma(SIE) approximate to sigma(cent). We use radio lenses from the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey and the PMN-NVSS Extragalactic Lens Survey to study how the velocity dispersions, sigma(SIE), are related to V-c,V-vir; if the galaxy were a singular isothermal sphere up to the virial radius, V-c,V-vir = root 2 sigma(SIE). When we include both the lensing probability and separation distribution as our lensing constraints, we find sigma(SIE)/(200 km s(-1)) = [(1.17(-0.26)(+0.40)) v(c,vir)/(200 km s(-1))](0.22)(+0.05)(-0.04) for 200 km s(-1) less than or similar to sigma(SIE) less than or similar to 260 km s(-1); at sigma(SIE) = 200km s(-1)' the ratio root 2 sigma(SIE)/V-c,V-vir is about 1.65(-0.37)(+0.57) [68 per cent confidence limit (CL)] but decreases to 0.65(-0.12)(+0-15) (68 per cent CL) for Or SIE = 260 km s(-1). These results are consistent with those of Seljak obtained from galaxy-galaxy weak lensing for galaxies of around L-*. However, our results clearly suggest that the ratio must vary significantly as sigma(SIE) is varied and are marginally discrepant with the Seljak results at sigma(SIE) = 260 km s(-1). The scaling sigma(SIE) proportional to V-c,vir(0.22 +/- 0.05) is broadly consistent with those from galaxy occupation statistics studies and the most recent galaxy-galaxy weak lensing study. We discuss briefly the implications of our results for galaxy formations and structures. These constraints can be significantly strengthened when larger lens samples become available and the accuracy of semi-analytical model predictions improves.

Abstract:We present measurements of the pairwise velocity dispersion (PVD) for different classes of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). For a sample of about 200 000 galaxies with redshifts in the interval 0.01 < z < 0.3, and r-band magnitudes M-0.1r between - 16 and - 23, we study the dependence of the PVD on galaxy properties such as luminosity, stellar mass (M-*), colour (g - r), 4000-angstrom break strength (D-4000), concentration index (C), and stellar surface mass density (mu(*)). The luminosity dependence of the PVD is in good agreement with the results of Jing & Borner for the two-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey catalogue, once the photometric bandpass difference between the two surveys is taken into account. The value of sigma(12) measured at k = 1 h Mpc(-1) decreases as a function of increasing galaxy luminosity for galaxies fainter than L*, before increasing again for the most luminous galaxies in our sample. Each of the galaxy subsamples selected according to luminosity or stellar mass is divided into two further subsamples according to colour, D4000, C and mu(*). We find that galaxies with redder colours and higher D4000, C, and mu(*) values have larger PVDs on all scales and at all luminosities/stellar masses. The dependence of the PVD on the parameters related to recent star formation ( colour, D4000) is stronger than on the parameters related to galaxy structure (C, mu(*)), especially on small scales and for faint galaxies. The reddest galaxies and galaxies with high surface mass densities and intermediate concentrations have the highest pairwise peculiar velocities, that is, these move in the strongest gravitational fields. We conclude that the faint red population located in rich clusters is responsible for the high PVD values that are measured for low-luminosity galaxies on small scales.
PAIRWISE VELOCITIES OF GALAXIES IN THE CFA AND SSRS2 REDSHIFT SURVEYS

Abstract:(compressed version) We combine the CfA Redshift Survey (CfA2) and the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS2) to estimate the pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies $\sig12$ on a scale of $\sim 1 \hmpc$. Both surveys are complete to an apparent magnitude limit $B(0)=15.5$. Our sample includes 12,812 galaxies distributed in a volume $1.8 \times 10^6 \hmpc3$. We conclude: 1) The pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies in the combined CfA2+SSRS2 redshift survey is $\sig12=540 \kms \pm 180 \kms$. Both the estimate and the variance of $\sig12$ significantly exceed the canonical values $\sig12=340 \pm40$ measured by Davis \& Peebles (1983) using CfA1. 2) We derive the uncertainty in $\sig12$ from the variation among subsamples with volumes on the order of $7 \times 10^5$ \hmpc3. This variation is nearly an order of magnitude larger than the formal error, 36 $\kms$, derived using least-squares fits to the CfA2+SSRS2 correlation function. This variation among samples is consistent with the conclusions of Mo \etal (1993) for a number of smaller surveys and with the analysis of CfA1 by Zurek \etal (1994). 3) When we remove Abell clusters with $R\ge1$ from our sample, the pairwise velocity dispersion of the remaining galaxies drops to $295 \pm 99 \kms$. Thus the dominant source of variance in $\sig12$ is the shot noise contributed by dense virialized systems. 4) The distribution of pairwise velocities is consistent with an isotropic exponential with velocity dispersion independent of scale.

Abstract:We present new central stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 428 galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of bright, northern galaxies. Of these, 142 have no previously published measurements, most being relatively late-type systems with low velocity dispersions (≲100 km s−1). We provide updates to a number of literature dispersions with large uncertainties. Our measurements are based on a direct pixel-fitting technique that can accommodate composite stellar populations by calculating an optimal linear combination of input stellar templates. The original Palomar survey data were taken under conditions that are not ideally suited for deriving stellar velocity dispersions for galaxies with a wide range of Hubble types. We describe an effective strategy to circumvent this complication and demonstrate that we can still obtain reliable velocity dispersions for this sample of well-studied nearby galaxies.
The Pairwise Velocity Distribution Function of Galaxies in the LCRS, 2dF, and SDSS Redshift Surveys

Abstract:A comparison of the galaxy pairwise velocity distribution functions determined from the three largest publicly available galaxy redshift surveys is presented. This is the first direct comparison of this function across these surveys using an identical method. It is found that the two r-band selected surveys, the LCRS (Las Campanas Redshift Survey) and the SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey), are in excellent agreement with 363 +/- 44 km/sec and 357 +/- 17 km/sec respectively. The b-band selected 2dF survey gives slightly lower results with 331 +/- 19 km/sec. This difference is expected given the sampling biases in the different surveys although it is not highly significant. These results and analysis of subsets of data indicate that the method is stable to singular features in each survey such as the prevalence of rich clusters. The technique utilizes a Fourier-space deconvolution of the redshift-space distortions in the correlation function in the sigma(rp)-pi basis, which has been previously described. This method returns the entire distribution function rather than just the second moment. In all cases the distribution function is well-characterized by an exponential.

Abstract:We present measurements of the velocity dispersion profile (VDP) for galaxy groups in the final data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). For groups of given mass we estimate the redshift-space cross-correlation function (CCF) with respect to a reference galaxy sample, xi(r_p, pi), the projected CCF, w_p(r_p), and the real-space CCF, xi(r). The VDP is then extracted from the redshift distortion in xi(r_p, pi), by comparing xi(r_p, pi) with xi(r). We find that the velocity dispersion (VD) within virial radius (R_200) shows a roughly flat profile, with a slight increase at radii below ~0.3 R_200 for high mass systems. The average VD within the virial radius, sigma_v, is a strongly increasing function of central galaxy mass. We apply the same methodology to N-body simulations with the concordance Lambda cold dark matter cosmology but different values of the density fluctuation parameter sigma_8, and we compare the results to the SDSS results. We show that the sigma_v-M_* relation from the data provides stringent constraints on both sigma_8 and sigma_ms, the dispersion in log M_* of central galaxies at fixed halo mass. Our best-fitting model suggests sigma_8 = 0.86 +/- 0.03 and sigma_ms = 0.16 +/- 0.03. The slightly higher value of sigma_8 compared to the WMAP7 result might be due to a smaller matter density parameter assumed in our simulations. Our VD measurements also provide a direct measure of the dark matter halo mass for central galaxies of different luminosities and masses, in good agreement with the results obtained by Mandelbaum et al. (2006) from stacking the gravitational lensing signals of the SDSS galaxies.

The Velocity Dispersion -- Temperature Correlation from a Limited Cluster Sample

Abstract:Most studies of correlations between X-ray and optical properties of galaxy clusters have used the largest samples of data available, regardless of the morphological types of clusters included. Given the increasing evidence that morphology is related to a cluster's degree of dynamical evolution, we approach the study of X-ray and optical correlations differently. We evaluate the relationship between velocity dispersion and temperature for a limited set of galaxy clusters taken from Bird (1994), which all possess dominant central galaxies and which have been explicitly corrected for the presence of substructure. We find that $\sigma _r \propto T^{0.61 \pm 0.13}$. We use a Monte Carlo computer routine to estimate the significance of this deviation from the $\sigma _r \propto T^{0.5}$ relationship predicted by the virial theorem. We find that the simulated correlation is steeper than the observed value only 4\% of the time, suggesting that the deviation is significant. The combination of protogalactic winds and dynamical friction reproduces nearly exactly the observed relationship between $\sigma _r$ and $T$.

Measuring Stellar Velocity Dispersions in Active Galaxies

Abstract:We present stellar velocity dispersion (sigma(*)) measurements for a significant sample of 40 broad-line (type 1) active galaxies for use in testing the well-known relation black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion. The objects are selected to contain Ca II triplet, Mg I b triplet, and Ca H+K stellar absorption features in their optical spectra so that we may use them to perform extensive tests of the systematic biases introduced by both template mismatch and contamination from the active galactic nucleus (AGN). We use the Ca II triplet as a benchmark to evaluate the utility of the other spectral regions in the presence of AGN contamination. Broad Fe II emission, extending from similar to 5050 to 5520 angstrom, in combination with narrow coronal emission lines, can seriously bias sigma(*) measurements from the Mg I b region, highlighting the need for extreme caution in its use. However, we argue that at luminosities constituting a moderate fraction of the Eddington limit, when the Fe II lines are both weak and smooth relative to the stellar lines, it is possible to derive meaningful measurements with careful selection of the fitting region. In particular, to avoid the contamination of coronal lines, we advocate the use of the region 5250-5820 angstrom, which is rich in Fe absorption features. At higher AGN contaminations, the Ca H+K region may provide the only recourse for estimating sigma(*). These features are notoriously unreliable, due to a strong dependence on spectral type, a steep local continuum, and large intrinsic broadening. Indeed, we find a strong systematic trend in comparisons of Ca H+K with other spectral regions. Luckily the offset is well described by a simple linear fit as a function of sigma(*), which enables us to remove the bias and thus extract unbiased sigma(*) measurements from this region. We lay the groundwork for an extensive comparison between black hole mass and bulge velocity dispersion in active galaxies, as described in a companion paper by Greene & Ho.
Velocity dispersion function evolution from strong lensing statistics

Abstract:The redshift and size distributions of galaxy scale strong lenses depend on the evolution of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the redshift range 0.2<z<1. We use this dependence to constrain the velocity dispersion function (VDF) evolution from the Strong Lensing Legacy Survey (SL2S) sample of lenses. Our modeling of the lens population includes lens identifiability given survey parameters, and constrains the evolution of the VDF based on the redshift distributions of sources and lenses as well as the distribution of Einstein radii. We consider five different assumptions for the reference VDF at redshift zero and two sets of scaling relations for the VDF. We find that in all cases the observed lens sample favors a slow evolution of both the VDF normalization factor and the VDF characteristic velocity with redshift which is consistent with a VDF that is constant in redshift for z<1.

The SBF Survey of Galaxy Distances. II. Local and Large-Scale Flows

Abstract:We present analysis of local large scale flows using the Surface Brightness Fluctuation (SBF) Survey for the distances to 300 early-type galaxies. Our models of the distribution function of mean velocity and velocity dispersion at each point in space include a uniform thermal velocity dispersion and spherical attractors whose position, amplitude, and radial shape are free to vary. Our fitting procedure performs a maximum likelihood fit of the model to the observations. We obtain a Hubble constant of Ho = 77 +/- 4 +/- 7 km/s/Mpc, but a uniform Hubble flow is not acceptable fit to the data. Inclusion of two attractors, one of whose fit location coincides with the Virgo cluster and the other whose fit location is slightly beyond the Centaurus clusters nearly explain the peculiar velocities, but the quality of the fit can be further improved by the addition of a quadrupole correction to the Hubble flow. Although the dipole and quadrupole may be genuine manifestations of more distant density fluctuations, we find evidence that they are more likely due to non-spherical attractors. We find no evidence for bulk flows which include our entire survey volume (R < 3000 km/s); our volume is at rest with respect to the CMB. The fits to the attractors both have isothermal radial profiles (v ~ 1/r) over a range of overdensity between about 10 and 1, but fall off more steeply at larger radius. The best fit value for the small scale, cosmic thermal velocity is 180 +/- 14 km/s.
The Velocity Dispersion Function for Quiescent Galaxies in Massive Clusters from IllustrisTNG

Abstract:We derive the central stellar velocity dispersion function for quiescent galaxies in 280 massive clusters with $\log (M_{200} / M_{\odot}) > 14$ in IllustrisTNG300. The velocity dispersion function is an independent tracer of the dark matter mass distribution of subhalos in galaxy clusters. Based on the IllustrisTNG cluster catalog, we select quiescent member subhalos with a specific star formation rate $< 2 \times 10^{-11}$ yr${^-1}$ and stellar mass $\log (M_{*} / M_{\odot}) > 9$. We then simulate fiber spectroscopy to measure the stellar velocity dispersion of the simulated galaxies; we compute the line-of-sight velocity dispersions of star particles within a cylindrical volume that penetrates the core of each subhalo. We construct the velocity dispersion functions for quiescent subhalos within $R_{200}$. The simulated cluster velocity dispersion function exceeds the simulated field velocity dispersion function for $\log \sigma_{*} > 2.2$, indicating the preferential formation of large velocity dispersion galaxies in dense environments. The excess is similar in simulations and in the observations. We also compare the simulated velocity dispersion function for the three most massive clusters with $\log (M_{200} / M_{\odot}) > 15$ with the observed velocity dispersion function for the two most massive clusters in the local universe, Coma and A2029. Intriguingly, the simulated velocity dispersion functions are significantly lower for $\log \sigma_{*} > 2.0$. This discrepancy results from 1) a smaller number of subhalos with $\log (M_{*} / M_{\odot}) > 10$ in TNG300 compared to the observed clusters, and 2) a significant offset between the observed and simulated $M_{*} - \sigma_{*}$ relations. The velocity dispersion function offers a unique window on galaxy and structure formation in simulations.

Pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies at high redshift: theoretical predictions

Abstract:We investigate the feasibility of determining the pairwise velocity dispersion (PVD) for Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs), and of using this quantity as a discriminator among theoretical models. We find that when the Two Point Correlation Function over the range of observable separations is fixed, different schemes of galaxy formation will lead to significant changes in PVD, while influence of different cosmogonies is invisible. Our test with mock samples shows furthermore that one can discriminate among such models already with currently available observational samples (if the measurement error of the redshift is negligible) which have a typical error of $80\kms$. The error will be reduced by a factor of 2 if the samples are increased four times. We also show that an erroneous assumption about the geometry of the universe and different infall models only slightly change the results. Therefore the PVD will become another promising statistic to test galaxy formation models with redshift samples of LBGs.

Abstract:The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Peculiar Velocity Survey aims to measure the peculiar velocities of early and late type galaxies within the DESI footprint using both the Fundamental Plane and Tully-Fisher relations. Direct measurements of peculiar velocities can significantly improve constraints on the growth rate of structure, reducing uncertainty by a factor of approximately 2.5 at redshift 0.1 compared to the DESI Bright Galaxy Survey's redshift space distortion measurements alone. We assess the quality of stellar velocity dispersion measurements from DESI spectroscopic data. These measurements, along with photometric data from the Legacy Survey, establish the Fundamental Plane relation and determine distances and peculiar velocities of early-type galaxies. During Survey Validation, we obtain spectra for 6698 unique early-type galaxies, up to a photometric redshift of 0.15. 64\% of observed galaxies (4267) have relative velocity dispersion errors below 10\%. This percentage increases to 75\% if we restrict our sample to galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts below 0.1. We use the measured central velocity dispersion, along with photometry from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, to fit the Fundamental Plane parameters using a 3D Gaussian maximum likelihood algorithm that accounts for measurement uncertainties and selection cuts. In addition, we conduct zero-point calibration using the absolute distance measurements to the Coma cluster, leading to a value of the Hubble constant, $H_0 = 76.05 \pm 0.35$(statistical) $\pm 0.49$(systematic FP) $\pm 4.86$(statistical due to calibration) $\mathrm{km \ s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$. This $H_0$ value is within $2\sigma$ of Planck Cosmic Microwave Background results and within $1\sigma$, of other low redshift distance indicator-based measurements.

Abstract:Within the disk model framework used to approximately describe flattened galaxies, we develop an iterative method of determining column mass density from rotation curve supplemented with isotropic velocity dispersion profile. This generalizes our previous iterative method to the case when the velocity dispersion becomes important. We show on the example of UGC 6446 galaxy, that taking the velocity dispersion into account results in some observational signatures in the behavior of the local mass-to-light ratio. Along with galactic magnetic fields, this is another factor allowing to substantially reduce the local mass-to-light ratio at galactic outskirts. Taking the velocity dispersion into account may also have some consequences for the division of mass distribution between various mass components in modeling rotation curves.
The Pairwise Velocity Dispersion of Galaxies: Luminosity Dependence and a New Test of Galaxy Formation Models

Abstract:We present the first determination of the pairwise velocity dispersion (PVD) for galaxies in different luminosity intervals using the final release of the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). We have discovered quite surprisingly that the relative velocities of the faint galaxies at small separation are very high, around 700 km s(-1), reaching similar values as the brightest galaxies. At intermediate luminosities M* - 1 (M* is the characteristic luminosity of the Schechter function), the relative velocities exhibit a well-defined steep minimum near 400 km s(-1). This result has been derived using a novel method to determine the real-space power spectrum and the PVD from the redshift-space power spectrum of the 2dFGRS. Combined with the observed luminosity dependence of clustering, our result implies that quite a fraction of faint galaxies, as well as the brightest ones, are in massive halos of galaxy cluster size, but most of the M* galaxies are in galactic halos. Our observed result is compared with the current halo model of galaxies of Yang et al., which was obtained by matching the clustering and luminosity functions of the 2dFGRS. With the model parameters they favored most, the halo model seems to be unable to reproduce the luminosity dependence of the PVD, because it predicts a monotonically increasing PVD with the luminosity. We discuss a possible solution to this model by raising the faint-end slope of the conditional luminosity function in rich clusters. The PVD luminosity dependence may also be an important constraint in general on theories of galaxy formation, such as semianalytical models and hydro/N-body simulations of galaxy formation.
