Abstract:A novel method using high-power laser as a circular deflector is proposed for the measurement of femtosecond (fs) and sub-fs electron beam. In the scheme, the electron beam interacts with a laser pulse operating in a radially polarized doughnut mode (TEM 01*) in a helical undulator, generating angular kicks along the beam in two directions at the same time. The phase difference between the two angular kicks makes the beam form a ring after a propagation section with appropriate phase advance, which can reveal the current profile of the electron beam. Detailed theoretical analysis of the method and numerical results with reasonable parameters are both presented. It is shown that the temporal resolution can reach up to similar to 100 attosecond, which is a significant improvement for the diagnostics of ultrashort electron beam.
Optical Manipulation of Relativistic Electron Beams using THz Pulses

Abstract:There are implementations and proposals for using microwave or optical radiation for electron acceleration, undulation, deflection, and spatial as well as temporal focusing. Using terahertz (THz) radiation in such applications can be superior to microwave or optical radiation since THz pulses can be generated with significantly smaller temporal jitter to the electron bunch to be manipulated as compared to microwave pulses, and contrary to the optical pulses, the much larger wavelength of THz pulses compares well with typical sizes of electron bunches. Recently generation of ultrashort THz pulses with 1 MV/cm focused electric field was demonstrated, and it is predicted that THz pulses with even 100 MV/cm focused field will be possible. According to the first results of our analytical and numerical studies this field strength is high enough for manipulation of relativistic electron beams by polarised THz pulses in various geometries. It is possible, e.g., to construct a 30 cm long THz undulator for saturated FEL working at 9.6 nm wavelength using electron bunches with 100 MeV energy and 0.42 nC charge.

Abstract:In modern high-gain free-electron lasers, ultra-fast photon pulses designed for studying chemical, atomic and biological systems are generated from a serial of behaviors of high-brightness electron beam at the time-scale ranging from several hundred femtoseconds to sub-femtosecond. Currently, radiofrequency transverse deflectors are widely used to provide reliable, single-shot electron beam phase space diagnostics, with a temporal resolution of femtosecond. Here, we show that the time resolution limitations caused by the intrinsic beam size in transverse deflectors, can be compensated with specific transverse-to-longitudinal coupling elements. For the purpose, an undulator with transverse gradient field is introduced before the transverse deflector. With this technique, a resolution of less than 1fs root mean square has been theoretically demonstrated for measuring the longitudinal profile and/or the micro-bunching of the electron bunch.

Study of achromatic beamline design for laser-driven femtosecond electron beams

Abstract:BackgroundThe electron beams produced by laser plasma acceleration have excellent quality for pulse lengths of the order of fs. Due to the existence of a strong laser field, there are difficulties in direct applications, and more applications need to transmit the electron beams to the application terminal. The energy spread leads to the generation of energy chirp of the electron beam in the transmission.PurposeThis study aims to explore the design of the beam optics to compress the pulse length and keep it on the fs scale.MethodsAn achromatic beamline consisting of bending magnets and quadrupole magnets was designed to compress the pulse length of electron beams. Critical parameters of an achromatic beamline were given by a derived formula. Transformation matrix was employed to investigate the differences of the pulse lengths in achromatic transmission and non-achromatic transmission. The pulse lengths of electron beams with different energies were scanned with different deflection angles (0.3 rad, 0.6 rad, 0.9 rad) and deflection radii (0.15 m, 0.25 m, 0.35 m) to study the influence of beamline parameters. Finally, the magnetic field gradients of the quadrupole lens were adjusted to realize the compression of electron beams with different energies in a beamline.ResultsComparing to non-achromatic transmission, the pulse lengths of electrons with the same energy and different initial divergence angles can be compressed effectively in the achromatic beamline. The larger the deflection angle or the deflection radius, the longer the pulse duration of the electron beam with higher energy (>25 MeV). By adjusting the magnetic field gradients of the quadrupole lens, the pulse lengths can be reduced from more than 100 fs to around 20 fs at higher energies.ConclusionsUsing a fixed-size achromatic beamline, combined with magnetic field strength adjustment, the pulse lengths of electron beams with different energies can be kept on the order of fs after transmission.
Electron Acceleration Using Twisted Laser Wavefronts

Abstract:Using plasma mirror injection we demonstrate, both analytically and numerically, that a circularly polarized helical laser pulse can accelerate highly collimated dense bunches of electrons to several hundred MeV using currently available laser systems. The circular-polarized helical (Laguerre-Gaussian) beam has a unique field structure where the transverse fields have helix-like wave-fronts which tend to zero on-axis where, at focus, there are large on-axis longitudinal magnetic and electric fields. The acceleration of electrons by this type of laser pulse is analysed as a function of radial mode number and it is shown that the radial mode number has a profound effect on electron acceleration close to the laser <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://axis.Using" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations a circular-polarized helical laser beam with power of 0.6 PW is shown to produce several dense attosecond bunches. The bunch nearest the peak of the laser envelope has an energy of 0.47 GeV with spread as narrow as 10\%, a charge of 26 pC with duration of $\sim 400$ as, and a very low divergence of 20 mrad}. The confinement by longitudinal magnetic fields in the near-axis region allows the longitudinal electric fields to accelerate the electrons over a long period after the initial reflection. Both the longitudinal E and B fields are shown to be essential for electron acceleration in this scheme. This opens up new paths towards attosecond electron beams, or attosecond radiation, at many laser facilities around the world.

Abstract:A scheme where a laser locked THz source is used to manipulate the longitudinal phase space of an ultrashort electron beam using an IFEL interaction is investigated. The efficiency of THz source based on the pulse front tilt optical rectification scheme is increased by cryogenic cooling to achieve sufficient THz power for compression and synchronization. Start-to-end simulations describing the evolution of the beam from the cathode to the compression point after the undulator are presented.
Structured free-space optical fields for transverse and longitudinal control of electron matter waves

Abstract:Controlling free-electron momentum states is of high interest in electron microscopy to achieve momentum and energy resolved probing and manipulation of physical systems. Free-electron and light interactions have emerged as a powerful technique to accomplish this. Here, we demonstrate both longitudinal and transverse phase control of a slow electron wavepacket by extending the Kapitza-Dirac effect to spatially-structured pulsed laser beams. This extension enables both inelastic and elastic stimulated Compton scattering. The interaction reveals the formation of distinct electron transverse momentum orders, each demonstrating a comb-like electron energy spectrum. By exerting complete control over light parameters, including wavelength, field intensity, pulse duration, and spatial mode order, as well as their combinations, it is possible to coherently control the population of these electron energy-momentum states that are separated by a few meV energy and multiple photon momentum orders. This free-space electron-light interaction phenomenon possesses the capability to coherently control the energy and momentum of electron beams in electron microscopes. Moreover, it has the potential to facilitate the selective probing of various material excitations, including plasmons, excitons, and phonons, and performing Talbot-Lau matter-wave interferometry with transversely shaped electron beams.

Generation of Isolated Subfemtosecond Electron Bunches by the Diffraction of a Polarization-Tailored Intense Laser Beam

Abstract:We propose utilizing a polarization-tailored high-power laser pulse to extract and accelerate electrons from the edge of a solid foil target to produce isolated subfemtosecond electron bunches. The laser pulse consists of two orthogonally polarized components with a time delay comparable to the pulse duration, such that the polarization in the middle of the pulse rapidly rotates over 90° within few optical cycles. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that when such a light pulse diffracts at the edge of a plasma foil, a series of isolated relativistic electron bunches are emitted into separated azimuthal angles determined by the varying polarization. In comparison with most other methods that require an ultrashort drive laser, we show the proposed scheme works well with typical multicycle (∼30 fs) pulses from high-power laser facilities. The generated electron bunches have typical durations of a few hundred attoseconds and charges of tens of picocoulombs.

Abstract:The generation and control of relativistic electron beams well suited for ultrafast electron diffraction application has rapidly advanced, greatly benefiting from the overlap in techniques and expertise with the accelerator community. However, imaging the diffracted MeV electrons with high detection efficiency has remained an under-explored area. In this paper, we report on a quantitative study of the imaging of MeV electrons using a detection system consisting of a phosphor screen, a lens-coupling optics, and a charge-coupled device camera. It is shown that every MeV electron in the beam yields a signal well above the camera noise. With this detection efficiency, only ∼105 electrons per pulse are needed to obtain a high quality single-shot diffraction pattern from a crystalline sample. We measured that such a low charge beam can be as short as 30 fs rms. Further, we discuss the possibility of compressing these electron beams to sub-5 fs rms bunch length by velocity bunching using a short high gradient rf accelerating structure scheduled to be installed next year at the UCLA Pegasus Laboratory. This opens the possibility of single-shot determinations of structural changes in many ultrafast physical processes like nonequilibrium phonon dynamics or relaxation pathways in systems with strong electron-phonon coupling.
Coherent femtosecond low-energy single-electron pulses for time-resolved diffraction and imaging: A numerical study

Abstract:We numerically investigate the properties of coherent femtosecond single electron wave packets photoemitted from nanotips in view of their application in ultrafast electron diffraction and non-destructive imaging with low-energy electrons. For two different geometries, we analyze the temporal and spatial broadening during propagation from the needle emitter to an anode, identifying the experimental parameters and challenges for realizing femtosecond time resolution. The simple tip-anode geometry is most versatile and allows for electron pulses of several ten of femtosecond duration using a very compact experimental design, however, providing very limited control over the electron beam collimation. A more sophisticated geometry comprising a suppressor-extractor electrostatic unit and a lens, similar to typical field emission electron microscope optics, is also investigated, allowing full control over the beam parameters. Using such a design, we find ∼230 fs pulses feasible in a focused electron beam. The main limitation to achieve sub-hundred femtosecond time resolution is the typical size of such a device, and we suggest the implementation of more compact electron optics for optimal performance.

Abstract:Herein, we propose a technique for megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction that can achieve a few-femtosecond time resolution. The technique modulates a relativistic electron beam using two radially polarized laser pulses of varying frequencies, which enable the condensation of the electrons into an ultrashort pulse. Moreover, our study shows that this technique can suppress the arrival-time jitter of the electron beam at the sample location. Numerical simulations show that using realistic laser parameters corresponding to the current gigawatt-power-level laser systems, a 3.3-fs (rms over 45% charge) electron beam can be obtained and the arrival-time jitter can be 1.35 fs (rms). This technique may have a considerable impact on ultrafast electron diffraction, microscopy, and other ultrafast research facilities that require few-femtosecond electron beams with a small time jitter.

Abstract:The fast-paced development of laser-wakefield electron acceleration has recently culminated in the generation of electron beams with extreme characteristics, including femtosecond-scale duration, mrad divergence, and high-energy. It is now customary to attain tens to hundreds of pC of charge with an energy of hundreds of MeV per particle with small-scale commercial laser systems, with multi-GeV electron beams being demonstrated from cm-scale accelerators. The interaction of such electron beams with either a solid target or the focus of a second high-power laser can result in the generation of high-quality positron beams and MeV-photon beams. The unrivaled properties of these secondary sources make them ideal for both fundamental and practical applications. In the present article, some of their main characteristics will be discussed, with particular emphasis on their potential applications in fundamental and applied physics. A discussion of potential future developments enabled by near-term laser facilities will also be presented.

Laser-driven pointed acceleration of electrons with preformed plasma lens

Abstract:The simultaneous laser-driven acceleration and angular manipulation of the fast electron beam is experimentally demonstrated. The bunch of multi-MeV energy charged particles is generated during the propagation of the femtosecond laser pulse through the near-critical plasma slab accompanied by plasma channeling. Plasma is formed by the controlled breakdown of a thin-tape target by a powerful nanosecond prepulse. The electron beam pointing approach is based on the refraction of a laser pulse in the presence of a strong radial density gradient in the breakdown of the tape with a small displacement of the femtosecond laser beam relative to the breakdown symmetry axis. A shift of several micrometers makes it possible to achieve beam deflection by an angle up to 10 degrees with acceptable beam charge and spectrum conservation. This opens up opportunities for in-situ applications for scanning objects with an electron beam and the multistage electron beam energy gain in consecutive laser accelerators without bulk magnetic optics for particles. Experimental findings are supported by numerical Particle-In-Cell calculations of laser-plasma acceleration and hydrodynamic simulations.

Optical Excitations with Electron Beams: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract:Free electron beams such as those employed in electron microscopes have evolved into powerful tools to investigate photonic nanostructures with an unrivaled combination of spatial and spectral precision through the analysis of electron energy losses and cathodoluminescence light emission. In combination with ultrafast optics, the emerging field of ultrafast electron microscopy utilizes synchronized femtosecond electron and light pulses that are aimed at the sampled structures, holding the promise to bring simultaneous sub-Angstrom--sub-fs--sub-meV space-time-energy resolution to the study of material and optical-field dynamics. In addition, these advances enable the manipulation of the wave function of individual free electrons in unprecedented ways, opening sound prospects to probe and control quantum excitations at the nanoscale. Here, we provide an overview of photonics research based on free electrons, supplemented by original theoretical insights, and discussion of challenges and opportunities. In particular, we show that the excitation probability by a single electron is independent of its wave function, apart from a classical average over the transverse beam density profile, whereas the probability for two or more modulated electrons depends on their relative spatial arrangement, thus reflecting the quantum nature of their interactions. We derive first-principles analytical expressions that embody these results and have general validity for arbitrarily shaped electrons and any type of electron-sample interaction. We conclude with perspectives on various exciting directions for disruptive approaches to non-invasive spectroscopy and microscopy, the possibility of sampling the nonlinear optical response at the nanoscale, the manipulation of the density matrices associated with free electrons and optical sample modes, and applications in optical modulation of electron beams.

Electron-assisted manipulation of polaritonic light-matter states

Abstract:Thanks to their exceptional spatial, spectral and temporal resolution, highly-coherent free-electron beams have emerged as powerful probes for material excitations, enabling their characterization even in the quantum regime. Here, we investigate strong light-matter coupling through monochromatic and modulated electron wavepackets. In particular, we consider an archetypal target, comprising a nanophotonic cavity next to a single two-level emitter. We propose a model Hamiltonian describing the coherent interaction between the passing electron beam and the hybrid photonic-excitonic target, which is constructed using macroscopic quantum electrodynamics and fully parameterized in terms of the electromagnetic Dyadic Green's function. Using this framework, we first describe electron-energy-loss and cathodoluminescence spectroscopies, and photon-induced near-field electron emission microscopy. Finally, we show the power of modulated electrons beams as quantum tools for the manipulation of polaritonic targets presenting a complex energy landscape of excitations.

Abstract:Abstract We demonstrate an all-optical method for controlling the transverse motion of an ionization injected electron beam in a laser plasma accelerator by using the transversely asymmetrical plasma wakefield. The laser focus shape can control the distribution of a transversal wakefield. When the laser focus shape is changed from circular to slanted elliptical in the experiment, the electron beam profiles change from an ellipse to three typical shapes. The three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation result agrees well with the experiment, and it shows that the trajectories of these accelerated electrons change from undulating to helical. Such an all-optical method could be useful for convenient control of the transverse motion of an electron beam, which results in synchrotron radiation from orbit angular momentum.

Abstract:Abstract The development of the femtosecond laser (fs laser) with its ability to provide extremely rapid athermal ablation of materials has initiated a renaissance in materials science. Sample milling rates for the fs laser are orders of magnitude greater than that of traditional focused ion beam (FIB) sources currently used. In combination with minimal surface post-processing requirements, this technology is proving to be a game changer for materials research. The development of a femtosecond laser attached to a focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (LaserFIB) enables numerous new capabilities, including access to deeply buried structures as well as the production of extremely large trenches, cross sections, pillars and TEM H-bars, all while preserving microstructure and avoiding or reducing FIB polishing. Several high impact applications are now possible due to this technology in the fields of crystallography, electronics, mechanical engineering, battery research and materials sample preparation. This review article summarizes the current opportunities for this new technology focusing on the materials science megatrends of engineering materials, energy materials and electronics.
Free-Space Optical Modulation of Free Electrons in the Continuous-Wave Regime

Abstract:The coherent interaction between free electrons and optical fields can produce free-electron compression and push the temporal resolution of ultrafast electron microscopy to the attosecond regime. However, a large electron-light interaction is required to attain a strong compression, generally necessitating short light and electron pulses combined with optical scattering at nanostructures. Here, we theoretically investigate an alternative configuration based on stimulated Compton scattering, whereby two counterpropagating Gaussian light beams induce energy jumps in a colinear electron beam by multiples of their photon-energy difference. Strong recoil effects are produced by extending the electron-light interaction over millimetric distances, enabling a dramatic increase in temporal compression and substantially reshaping the electron spectra for affordable laser powers. Beyond its fundamental interest, our work introduces a practical scheme to achieve a large temporal compression of continuous electron beams without involving optical scattering by material structures.

Femtosecond Dynamics of Fast Electron Pulses in Relativistic Laser-Foil Interactions

Abstract:We report the femtosecond time-resolved dynamics of relativistic electron pulses in ultraintense laser-foil interactions, by characterizing the terahertz self-radiation with single-shot ultrabroadband interferometry. Experimental measurements together with theoretical modeling reveal that the electron pulses inherit the duration of the driving laser pulse. We also visualize the electron recirculation dynamics, where electrons remain trapped inside the self-generated electrostatic potential well and rebound back and forth around the thin foil for hundreds of femtoseconds. Our results not only demonstrate an in situ , real-time metrology scheme for electron bursts, but also have important implications for understanding and manipulating the time-domain properties of laser-driven particle and radiation sources. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.155001 © 2024 American Physical Society
