Abstract:Transport through molecular quantum dots coupled to a single vibration mode is studied in the case with strong coupling to the leads. We use an expansion in the correlation between electrons on the molecule and electrons in the leads and show that the tunneling broadening is strongly suppressed by the combination of the Pauli principle and the quantization of the oscillator. As a consequence the first Frank-Condon step is sharper than the higher order ones, and its width, when compared to the bare tunneling strength, is reduced by the overlap between the groundstates of the displaced and the non-displaced oscillator.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the tunneling broadening of vibrational sidebands in molecular transistors, especially under strong - coupling conditions. Specifically, the author studied the change in transmission characteristics caused by the interaction between electrons and molecular vibration modes when electrons are transmitted through molecular quantum dots under strong coupling to electrodes. ### Main problems: 1. **Influence of tunneling broadening**: When electrons pass through molecular quantum dots, how does the broadening caused by the tunneling effect affect the shape and width of the vibrational sidebands? 2. **Role of the Pauli exclusion principle**: The inhibitory effect of the Pauli exclusion principle and oscillator quantization on tunneling broadening. 3. **Characteristics of the Frank - Condon steps**: The reason why the first Frank - Condon step is sharper than the higher - order steps and the relationship between its width and the bare tunneling strength. ### Research background: - **Field of molecular electronics**: In recent years, the field of molecular electronics has reignited interest in strong electron - phonon coupling transmission phenomena in mesoscopic systems. - **Experimental progress**: Some experiments have demonstrated transmission through a single molecule and observed the existence of vibrational sidebands (Frank - Condon peaks). - **Theoretical challenges**: Theoretically, there are two main methods for dealing with the tunneling problem of a single energy level coupled to phonon modes: the kinetic equation method in the weak tunneling limit and the many - body theory method in the strong tunneling limit. ### Contributions of this paper: - **A new approximate method in the strong tunneling limit**: The author proposed a new approximate method, which takes into account the Fermi - sea effect but ignores the correlation effects between conduction - band electrons. - **Analytical results**: Obtained a simple analytical expression (see equation (38)) that describes the inhibitory effect of tunneling broadening. - **Numerical verification**: Verified the validity of this approximation through numerical calculations and compared it with the single - particle approximation (SPA). ### Conclusions: - **Inhibition of tunneling broadening**: The combination of the Pauli exclusion principle and oscillator quantization significantly restricts the phase space of tunneling broadening, making the Frank - Condon steps narrower than expected. - **Scope of application**: This approximate method is accurate in the single - particle limit and the weak tunneling limit, and can also provide reasonable physical conclusions in the case of strong tunneling. ### Related formulas: - **Expansion of the Green function**: \[ G_R(\omega)=\sum_{n,n'}\frac{(1 - \bar{n})N_n+\bar{n}N_{n'}}{\omega + E_{nn'}-\epsilon_0-\Sigma_{nn'}(\omega)}|f_{nn'}|^2 \] - **Self - energy term**: \[ \Sigma_{nn'}(\omega)=\sum_l\left(\Lambda_e^{ln'}(\omega)|f_{nl}|^2+\Lambda_h^{nl}(\omega)|f_{ln'}|^2\right) \] These formulas and theoretical analyses provide an important theoretical basis for understanding the transmission characteristics in molecular transistors.
