Abstract:Statistical thermodynamics of small systems shows dramatic differences from normal systems. Parallel to the recently presented steady-state thermodynamic formalism for master equation and Fokker-Planck equation, we show that a ``thermodynamic'' theory can also be developed based on Tsallis' generalized entropy $S^{(q)}=\sum_{i=1}^N(p_i-p_i^q)/[q(q-1)]$ and Shiino's generalized free energy $F^{(q)}=[\sum_{i=1}^Np_i(p_i/\pi_i)^{q-1}-1]/[q(q-1)]$, where $\pi_i$ is the stationary distribution. $dF^{(q)}/dt=-f_d^{(q)}\le 0$ and it is zero iff the system is in its stationary state. $dS^{(q)}/dt-Q_{ex}^{(q)} = f_d^{(q)}$ where $Q_{ex}^{(q)}$ characterizes the heat exchange. For systems approaching equilibrium with detailed balance, $f_d^{(q)}$ is the product of Onsager's thermodynamic flux and force. However, it is discovered that the Onsager's force is non-local. This is a consequence of the particular transformation invariance for zero energy of Tsallis' statistics.

Abstract:This paper reviews a new theory for non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. This gives the non-equilibrium analogue of the Boltzmann probability distribution, and the generalization of entropy to dynamic states. It is shown that this so-called second entropy is maximized in the steady state, in contrast to the rate of production of the conventional entropy, which is not an extremum. The relationships of the new theory to Onsager's regression hypothesis, Prigogine's minimal entropy production theorem, the Langevin equation, the formula of Green and Kubo, the Kawasaki distribution, and the non-equilibrium fluctuation and work theorems, are discussed. The theory is worked through in full detail for the case of steady heat flow down an imposed temperature gradient. A Monte Carlo algorithm based upon the steady state probability density is summarized, and results for the thermal conductivity of a Lennard-Jones fluid are shown to be in agreement with known values. Also discussed is the generalization to non-equilibrium mechanical work, and to non-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics. As examples of the new theory two general applications are briefly explored: a non-equilibrium version of the second law of thermodynamics, and the origin and evolution of life.

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics governs the direction of heat transport, which provides the foundational definition of thermodynamic Clausius entropy. The definitions of entropy are further generalized for the phenomenological heat transport models in the frameworks of classical irreversible thermodynamics and extended irreversible thermodynamics (EIT). In this work, entropic functions from mathematics are combined with phenomenological heat conduction models and connected to several information-geometrical conceptions. The long-time behaviors of these mathematical entropies exhibit a wide diversity and physical pictures in phenomenological heat conductions, including the tendency to thermal equilibrium, and exponential decay of nonequilibrium and asymptotics, which build a bridge between the macroscopic and microscopic modelings. In contrast with the EIT entropies, the mathematical entropies expressed in terms of the internal energy function can avoid singularity paired with nonpositive local absolute temperature caused by non-Fourier heat conduction models.

Abstract:The physical foundations of a variety of emerging technologies --- ranging from the applications of quantum entanglement in quantum information to the applications of nonequilibrium bulk and interface phenomena in microfluidics, biology, materials science, energy engineering, etc. --- require understanding thermodynamic entropy beyond the equilibrium realm of its traditional definition. This paper presents a rigorous logical scheme that provides a generalized definition of entropy free of the usual unnecessary assumptions which constrain the theory to the equilibrium domain. The scheme is based on carefully worded operative definitions for all the fundamental concepts employed, including those of system, property, state, isolated system, environment, process, separable system, system uncorrelated from its environment, and parameters of a system. The treatment considers also systems with movable internal walls and/or semipermeable walls, with chemical reactions and/or external force fields, and with small numbers of particles. The definition of reversible process is revised by introducing the new concept of scenario. The definition of entropy involves neither the concept of heat nor that of quasistatic process; it applies to both equilibrium and nonequilibrium states. The role of correlations on the domain of definition and on the additivity of energy and entropy is discussed: it is proved that energy is defined and additive for all separable systems, while entropy is defined and additive only for separable systems uncorrelated from their environment; decorrelation entropy is defined. The definitions of energy and entropy are extended rigorously to open systems. Finally, to complete the discussion, the existence of the fundamental relation for stable equilibrium states is proved, in our context, for both closed and open systems.

Abstract:Some 80-90 years ago, George A. Linhart, unlike A. Einstein, P. Debye, M. Planck and W. Nernst, has managed to derive a very simple, but ultimately general mathematical formula for heat capacity vs. temperature from the fundamental thermodynamical principles, using what we would nowadays dub a "Bayesian approach to probability". Moreover, he has successfully applied his result to fit the experimental data for diverse substances in their solid state in a rather broad temperature range. Nevertheless, Linhart's work was undeservedly forgotten, although it does represent a valid and fresh standpoint on thermodynamics and statistical physics, which may have a significant implication for academic and applied science.

Abstract:We present a new proposal for distinguishing heat from work based on a control-theoretic observability decomposition. We derive a Hermitian operator representing instantaneous dissipation of observable energy, and suggest a generalization of the von-Neumann entropy which can account for the model-uncertainty also present in pure states if the measured observables are informationally incomplete. In this view, the transition from a fundamental to a thermodynamic model consists in mapping the fundamental density matrix to an effective one, generally of lower dimension, encoding only what is observable given the constraints of our sensor and actuator capabilities. The generalized entropy captures the information loss incurred in this mapping. The theory is illustrated for the central spin model, where we show that the application of external controls can increase the size of thermal fluctuations and lower the entropy.

Abstract:From a new rigorous formulation of the general axiomatic foundations of thermodynamics we derive an operational definition of entropy that responds to the emergent need in many technological frameworks to understand and deploy thermodynamic entropy well beyond the traditional realm of equilibrium states of macroscopic systems. The new definition is achieved by avoiding to resort to the traditional concepts of "heat" (which restricts $a$ $priori$ the traditional definitions of entropy to the equilibrium domain) and of "thermal reservoir" (which restricts $in$ $practice$ our previous definitions of non-equilibrium entropy to the many-particle domain). The measurement procedure that defines entropy is free from intrinsic limitations and can be applied, $in$ $principle$, even to non-equilibrium states of few-particle systems, provided they are separable and uncorrelated. The construction starts from a previously developed set of carefully worded operational definitions for all the basic concepts. Then, through a new set of fully spelled-out fundamental hypotheses (four postulates and five assumptions) we derive the definitions of energy and entropy of any state, and of temperature of any stable equilibrium state. Finally, we prove the principle of entropy non-decrease, the additivity of entropy differences, the maximum entropy principle, and the impossibility of existence of a thermal reservoir.

Abstract:A complete mathematical theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics of stochastic systems in terms of master equations is presented. As generalizations of isothermal entropy and free energy, two functions of states play central roles: the Gibbs entropy $S$ and the relative entropy $F$, which are related via the stationary distribution of the stochastic dynamics. $S$ satisfies the fundamental entropy balance equation $dS/dt=e_p-h_d/T$ with entropy production rate $e_p\ge 0$ and heat dissipation rate $h_d$, while $dF/dt=-f_d\le 0$. For closed systems that satisfy detailed balance: $Te_p(t)=f_d(t)$. For open system one has $Te_p(t)=f_d(t)+Q_{hk}(t)$ where the housekeeping heat $Q_{hk}\ge 0$ was first introduced in the phenomenological nonequilibrium steady state thermodynamics. Entropy production $e_p$ consists of free energy dissipation associated with spontaneous relaxation, $f_d$, and active energy pumping that sustains the open system $Q_{hk}$. The amount of excess heat involved in the relaxation $Q_{ex}=h_d-Q_{hk} = f_d-T(dS/dt)$.

Abstract:Gibbs-Boltzmann entropy leads to systems that have a strong dependence on initial conditions. In reality, most materials behave quite independently of initial conditions. Nonextensive entropy or Tsallis entropy leads to nonextensive statistical mechanics. In this paper, we calculate the Tsallis form of Clausius inequality and then determine the upper bound for extracting work from the small system in the nonextensive statistical mechanics with mutual information. In the following, we extract mutual information and adjust Maxwell's demon with quantum feedback control.

Abstract:Statistical thermodynamics delivers the probability distribution of the equilibrium state of matter through the constrained maximization of a special functional, entropy. Its elegance and enormous success have led to numerous attempts to decipher its language and make it available to problems outside physics, but a formal generalization has remained elusive. Here we show how the formalism of thermodynamics can be applied to any stochastic process. We view a stochastic process as a random walk on the event space of a random variable that produces a feasible distribution of states. The set of feasible distributions obeys thermodynamics: the most probable distribution is the canonical distribution, it maximizes the functionals of statistical mechanics, and its parameters satisfy the same Legendre relationships. Thus the formalism of thermodynamics -- no new functionals beyond those already encountered in statistical physics -- is shown to be a stochastic calculus, a universal language of probability distributions and stochastic processes.

Abstract:For classical discrete systems under constant composition, typically referred to as substitutional alloys, we propose basic frameworks that provide thermodynamic treatment of nonlinearity in canonical ensemble, i.e., nonlinear correspondence between a set of many-body interaction and equilibrium configuration through canonical average. We see that stochastic system evolution driven by the nonlinearity itself can be naturally transformed into system evolution contacting with a single thermal bath. This transformation enables bridge two different concepts of the local nonlinearity on configuration space and non-local nonlinearity on statistical manifold previously introduced: We derive relationships between nonlinearity evolution on statistical manifold and heat inflow through system evolution driven by the nonlinearity on cofiguration space. Owing to the transformation, we find upper bound for the average of the nonlinearity evolution, which is characterized by entropy production of ideally linear system.

Existence of such functions of state requires no stipulation that their domains be restricted to equilibrium states. Further properties, including uniqueness, are addressed in a companion paper.

The new treatment starts from a previously developed set of carefully worded operational definitions for all the necessary basic concepts, and is not based on the traditional ones of "heat" and of "thermal reservoir." It is achieved in three steps. First, a new definition of thermodynamic temperature is stated, for any stable equilibrium state. Then, by employing this definition, a measurement procedure is developed which defines uniquely the property entropy in a broad domain of states, which could include \textit{in principle}, even some non-equilibrium states of few-particle systems, provided they are separable and uncorrelated. Finally, the domain of validity of the definition is extended, possibly to every state of every system, by a different procedure, based on the preceding one, which associates a range of entropy values to any state not included in the previous domain. The principle of entropy non-decrease and the additivity of entropy are proved in both the domains considered.

Abstract:Recent research on the fundamentals of statistical mechanics has led to an interesting discovery: With locally nonchaotic barriers, as Boltzmann's H-theorem is inapplicable, there exist nontrivial non-thermodynamic systems that can produce useful work by absorbing heat from a single thermal reservoir without any other effect, thereby breaking the boundaries of the second law of thermodynamics. The previous analyses used classical mechanical models. In the current investigation, the study is extended to quantum mechanics. First, we confirm that the Fermi-Dirac distribution and the Bose-Einstein distribution are inherently consistent with the heat-engine statement of the second law of thermodynamics. It reiterates the robustness of the overall framework of quantum statistical mechanics. Next, we perform thermodynamic analysis on a set of simple-step scattering problems. The result suggests that a bound state has a strong tendency to adhere to the second law of thermodynamics, while an unbound state may not. It implies that non-thermodynamic phenomena favor unquantized energy.

The Statistical Discrepancy between the IGM and Dark Matter Fields: One-Point Statistics

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between the mass and velocity fields of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and dark matter. Although the evolution of the IGM is dynamically governed by the gravity of the underlying dark matter field, some statistical properties of the IGM inevitably decouple from those of the dark matter once the nonlinearity of the dynamical equations and the stochastic nature of the field is considered. With simulation samples produced by a hybrid cosmological hydrodynamic/N-body code, which is effective in capturing shocks and complicated structures with high precision, we find that the one-point distributions of the IGM field are systematically different from that of dark matter as follows: 1.) the one-point distribution of the IGM peculiar velocity field is exponential at least at redshifts less than 2, while the dark matter velocity field is close to a Gaussian field; 2.) although the one-point distributions of the IGM and dark matter are similar, the point-by-point correlation between the IGM and dark matter density fields significantly differs on all scales and redshifts analyzed; 3.) the one-point density distributions of the difference between IGM and dark matter fields are highly non-Gaussian and long tailed. These discrepancies violate the similarity between the IGM and dark matter and cannot be explained simply as Jeans smoothing of the IGM. However, these statistical discrepancies are consistent with the fluids described by stochastic-force driven nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:Thermodynamics allows the application of Statistical Mechanics to finite and even small systems. As surface effects cannot be scaled away, one has to be careful with the standard arguments of splitting a system into two or bringing two systems into thermal contact with energy or particle exchange: Not only the volume part of the entropy must be considered. The addition of any other macroscopic constraint like a dividing surface, or the enforcement of gradients of the energy/particle reduce the entropy. As will be shown here, when removing such constraint in regions of a negative heat capacity, the system may even relax under a flow of heat against the temperature slope. Thus Clausius formulation of the Second Law: "Heat always flows from hot to cold" can be violated. However, the Second Law is still satisfied and the total Boltzmann-entropy is rising. In the final chapter the general microscopic mechanism leading to the convexity of the microcanonical entropy at phase separation is discussed. This is explained for the liquid--gas and the solid--liquid transition.

Abstract:Prior attempts to formulate the Laws of Thermodynamics for a small region within a larger quantum system have led to inconsistencies and unexplained infinities. The entropy and external work, in particular, require careful analysis when partitioning over the various subsystems. In this work, we analyze the thermodynamics of a quantum subsystem driven quasi-statically by external forces. We show that the thermodynamic functions of a quantum subsystem can be defined dynamically in terms of its local spectrum. The external work is found to be intrinsically nonlocal due to the nonlocal character of the underlying quantum states. This nonlocal quantum work can be harnessed in a "quantum lever" to provide up to 100% amplification of the local work done on a quantum subsystem.

Abstract:When at equilibrium, large-scale systems obey conventional thermodynamics because they belong to microscopic configurations (or states) that are typical. Crucially, the typical states usually represent only a small fraction of the total number of possible states, and yet the characterization of the set of typical states -- the typical set -- alone is sufficient to describe the macroscopic behavior of a given system. Consequently, the concept of typicality, and the associated Asymptotic Equipartition Property allow for a drastic reduction of the degrees of freedom needed for system's statistical description. The mathematical rationale for such a simplification in the description is due to the phenomenon of concentration of measure. The later emerges for equilibrium configurations thanks to very strict constraints on the underlying dynamics, such as weekly interacting and (almost) independent system constituents. The question naturally arises as to whether the concentration of measure and related typicality considerations can be extended and applied to more general complex systems, and if so, what mathematical structure can be expected in the ensuing generalized thermodynamics. In this paper we illustrate the relevance of the concept of typicality in the toy model context of the "thermalized" coin and show how this leads naturally to Shannon entropy. We also show an intriguing connection: The characterization of typical sets in terms of Renyi and Tsallis entropies naturally leads to the free energy and partition function, respectively, and makes their relationship explicit. Finally, we propose potential ways to generalize the concept of typicality to systems where the standard microscopic assumptions do not hold.
