Abstract:Background: The nursing education program offers opportunities to prepare nursing students with the knowledge and skills required for their professional roles. The level of their readiness and confidence will affect their ability to provide effective and sufficient nursing care. The purpose of this study is to assess nursing interns readiness for professional roles. Materials and method: To accomplish the study's objectives, a cross-sectional, descriptive design was employed. All nursing interns who graduated from the KAU School of Nursing in the academic year 2018-2019 were recruited from different hospitals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from March 2019 until May 2019. Participants completed the Casey-Fink Readiness for Practice Survey. Descriptive statistics were conducted to answer the research questions. Results: The results of this study demonstrated that the students felt ready and confident to assume their professional nursing roles. The students had some difficulties with managing multiple patients and certain skills, such as how to deal with dying patients and prioritize patient care needs. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed the students felt entirely ready for the professional nursing role. The nursing college at King Abdul-Aziz University is making a great effort to prepare its students for their professional roles. We still need to develop skills and clinical competencies in preparation for effective professional roles. In addition, continuous assessment is considered important for patient safety, to increase nurses' work retention, and to enhance professional nurse confidence and the quality of care they must provide.
New graduate nurses' readiness for practice, transition and integration into the workplace: A longitudinal study with mixed methods research

Abstract:Aim: To examine the readiness of new graduate nurses for practice and evaluate factors influencing their transition into the workplace. Background: This is new research in Bahrain. Understanding readiness for practice is important during a time when there is a national initiative to promote nursing as a career among the indigenous Bahraini population. The worldwide nursing shortages and aging workforce require new and innovative recruitment and retention measures. There is change, increased demand and complexity, in nursing and healthcare needs with accompanying healthcare specialization. In such a health care environment, the transitioning and readiness of newly qualified nurses is an increasing challenge. Design: A longitudinal design, with a triangulated, mixed methods, research approach was used. Methods: The study population consisted of 50 newly graduated nurses. Data were collected over one year through self-administered questionnaires, reflective diaries and focus groups. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS and qualitative data using thematic analysis with adherence to GRAMMS reporting guidelines. Results: In Bahrain, there are actions to recruit young Arabic students to nursing including schools and community presentations by trained nurse ambassadors, social media activities and career exhibitions, however there is a lack of objective information on the perspective of cohorts of nurses who have successfully completed graduate nursing registration programmes and transitioned into practice. International literature suggests that the transition of newly graduated nurses can be stressful and challenging. On entry to practice, the respondents positively perceived their characteristics and attributes; however, their confidence was affected by challenges in the workplace. The transitioning of the new graduate nurses was affected by the availability of support and leadership, induction programmes and the new complex work environment. Conclusion: Understanding work readiness and the emotional needs of new graduate nurses, accompanied by improved support, will enhance the transition of newly qualified nurses into the workplace and reduce attrition. Do internship students do well in a clinical environment? A qualitative naturistic study

Abstract:Background: The internship year marks the culmination of the nursing program across all Saudi universities, bridging theoretical learning and practical application. The significance of the internship year lies in the application of skills acquired during the preceding years of study. Understanding interns' experiences, identifying influences, and sharing their recommendations for best practices become crucial. Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of internship students and address the challenges they encountered in a clinical environment. Methods: A qualitative naturistic descriptive approach was employed, involving 20 purposively selected participants from internship students in two regions in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected in January 2023 through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and observation. A conventional content analysis approach was used for data analysis. Results: Four major themes were generated: 1) Transferring Shock, 2) Self-Learning, 3) Supportive Environments, and 4) Factors Facilitating Learning. Transferring Shock comprised two subthemes: feeling lost and feeling left out. Conclusion: Internship students acknowledged the utility of orientation and mentorship programs in advancing the practical skills of new nurses and enhancing patient safety. The findings also indicated that those with prior preparation and robust communication skills reported a positive experience. Consequently, integrating communication courses into the nursing education curriculum could be beneficial. Establishing a supportive learning environment for nursing interns is imperative to address challenges and ensure the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
Role transition from education to practice and its impact on the career futures of Omani nurses

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study was to examine new Omani graduate nurses' role transition from education to practice. We also sought to describe factors that may affect the effective transition of new Omani graduates to their professional nurse role. Background: There is a substantial literature on the process of transition from graduation to being a professional nurse in countries across the globe; however, little is known about new Omani graduate nurses' role transition from education to practice. Design: This study had a descriptive cross-sectional design. Methods: Data were collected from nurses who at the time of the study had been working for at least 3 months but not longer than 2 years. Role transition was assessed with the Comfort and Confidence subscale of the Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey (Casey et al., 2004). The survey consists of a 24-items that are rated on a 4-point Likert scale. We conducted a multivariate regression analysis to assess the factors that influence nurses' role transition. These factors included participants' demographic information, employment orientation durations, preceptorship duration and length of time before employment. Results: The total sample consisted of 405 nurses working in 13 hospitals in Oman. Most (68.89%) had worked as a nurse for less than 6 months. The average internship and orientation durations were approximately 6 months (SD = 1.58) and 2 weeks (SD = 1.79), respectively. The number of preceptors assigned to new graduate nurses ranged from none to four. The average score on the Comfort and Confidence subscale was 2.96 (SD = 0.38). Results from the regression analysis demonstrated that age (β = 0.029, SE = 0.012, p = .021), waiting time before employment (β = -0.035, SE = 0.013, p = .007) and employment orientation duration (β = -0.007, SE = 0.003, p = .018) were statistically significant factors influencing role transition experience among newly joined nurses. Conclusion: The results suggest that appropriate intervention strategies at the national level are needed to enhance the transition of nursing school graduates to their professional role. Strategies directed toward shortening the waiting time before employment and improving the internship experience are examples of priority-level tactics that can enhance Omani nursing graduates' transition to their professional role.
Nursing interns' perception of clinical competence upon completion of preceptorship experience in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Nursing interns are newly graduate students with limited real-life work experiences. These novices are in the process of enhancing their competencies in the delivery of quality nursing care with the guidance of the preceptors. Hence, it is relevant to examine the impact of preceptorship, as a teaching strategy, among nursing interns during their preceptorship years in clinical settings. Objective: The aim of this study is to determine if the preceptorship program has provided the nursing interns the needed education in enhancing clinical competence. Setting: The study was conducted in one of the tertiary hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Participants: Convenience sampling was used to recruit 92 undergraduate nursing interns who have completed the five-years nursing education including preceptorship. Methods: The nursing interns completely answered the survey questionnaires which covers Benner's Competencies, Knowles' Adult Learning Theory and the Nursing Process. Design: The study followed a mixed-methods design wherein a descriptive cross-sectional approach was used to identify factors affecting the nursing interns' perception towards clinical competence. Two open-ended questions referring to the improvement of internship program and competency were concurrently collected which was the qualitative portion of the study. Results: The preceptorship program enhanced the preceptees competencies in the clinical setting primarily in priority-setting with acutely ill patients, multitasking and demonstrating complex nursing skills. The majority of the nursing interns perceived preceptorship as a constructive experience. The availability, approachable attitude, and trustworthiness of the preceptor were viewed as influential factors in improving the interns' clinical competence. Variations were significant with phases of internship and type of school. Furthermore, results showed positive correlation between the nursing interns' efficacy and clinical competencies in professional behavior, general performance, and core nursing skills. Conclusion: Preceptorship program positively impacts nursing interns' skills in handling actual patients in clinical setting. Hence, the preceptorship program is an effective teaching strategy which advances the novice to the next stage of developing clinical competence.

Abstract:Background. As nursing interns enter challenging clinical settings, evaluating their preparation and readiness is vital for adaptation success. Sufficient real-world experience and patient care are crucial preparation components that enable effective practice and higher competencies. Aim. This study aimed to assess nurse interns’ perception of clinical preparation and readiness for clinical internship experiences. Methods. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed, comprising three sections on demographics, clinical preparation requirements, and the Casey–Fink Readiness for Practice Survey. Descriptive statistics as the mean and standard deviation, numbers and percentages, linear regression model, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for reporting normal distribution, categorical variables, and relationship between a scalar response and one or more explanatory variables and to calculate statistics between two continuous variables. Results. The participants were 130 nurse interns who were involved in an internship between 2016 and 2020, 50% of the nurse interns. They had a moderate level of clinical preparation, and 28.5% of them exhibited a low level. In addition, 53.8% were found to be moderately ready for practice, while 22.3% had a low level of readiness Conclusion. The observed significant positive correlation between perceived preparation and readiness underscores the pivotal role of clinical preparation in influencing practice readiness. Implications. These findings emphasize the importance of targeted interventions aimed at enhancing clinical preparation to directly bolster overall readiness for professional practice among nurse interns.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Through internship programs, nursing students learn information and skills in multiple hospital departments. Internships can also help with transitioning from student roles to graduate roles. However, the factors contributing to successful clinical internships in different education and health systems have not yet been sufficiently explored.OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that contribute to successful clinical internships in both public and private hospitals in Saudi Arabia.DESIGN: This study uses a qualitative descriptive design.SETTING: Due to precautionary measures for COVID-19 and the inclusion of participants from different locations across Saudi Arabia, this study was conducted virtually.PARTICIPANTS: The study was conducted with a purposive sample of 16 nursing interns and four instructors.METHODS: Data were collected via semi-structured interviews to provide a wide variety of perspectives from nursing students and instructors. Each interview was recorded, transcribed verbatim in Arabic, and then translated into English. Collected data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach.RESULTS: Three facilitators of success and four barriers to success emerged in the study. Facilitators of success included the program curriculum, hospital internship program, and contribution to the nursing board exam. Barriers to success were as follows: exploitation, lack of self-confidence, lack of incentives, and the long duration of the programs.CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study could contribute to the creation of more effective clinical internship. It is recommended that clinical internship programs be enhanced and that appropriate support be given to nursing students.

Perceptions of confidence among Saudi nursing interns during internship program: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Saudi nursing students are trained in theoretical and clinical nursing competencies for four years before transition to newly graduated nurses through a one-year internship program. The transition period is crucial as nursing students have low confidence without adequate clinical experience. Objectives: Validate and culturally adapt the Arabic version of the Self-Efficacy for Clinical Evaluation Scale (SECS) and explore nursing interns perceived confidence (self-efficacy). Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Four public tertiary training hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A survey was conducted among nursing interns. Validity, reliability, and the cultural relevance of the Arabic-translated instrument was determined. Tests for differences and correlations were undertaken. Main outcome measures: Perceived self-efficacy and impor.tance of learning objectives. Sample size: 300 Saudi nursing interns. Results: The Arabic version of SECS was successfully adapted cross-culturally and was valid. Reliability tests showed Cronbach's a=.95 for confidence and Cronbach's a=0.96 for the importance subscales. The overall mean (SD) for perceived confidence and importance of clinical evaluation were 3.7 (0.9) and 4.1 (0.8), respectively. Gender (P less than .001), length of internship (P=.009), and training hospital (P less than .001) were significantly correlated and had a medium effect size with perceived self-efficacy. Conclusion: Gaining knowledge that the gender, length of intern.ship and area of training affect the perceptions of the Saudi nursing interns towards self-efficacy can help preceptors formulate better strategies in developing nursing intern competence and gaining self-efficacy as they move from the academic to clinical nursing practice. The knowledge gathered in this study should be beneficial to nursing administrators, faculty, and mentors/preceptors. Limitations: Results may not be generalizable due to the limitations in the setting and there are other factors not included in the study that may have explained variances in perceived self-efficacy. Abstract:Nursing students' attitudes and levels of self-confidence can be negatively impacted by unfavourable experiences they have while completing an internship. This demonstrates the importance of conducting research into the experiences of nursing students as they advance through their education. This study investigates the difficulties and obstacles that nursing students encounter while completing their internships at a hospital in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The hospital is located in Saudi Arabia. During the course of the research, a qualitative exploratory study design was utilized, and a total of eight nursing students participated. In order to collect data, face-to-face semi-structured interviews were carried out with participants. In addition to that, a thematic analysis was performed on the data. The nursing students faced a number of significant challenges and problems, the most significant of which were a lack of support, mistrust, improper behaviour, and an absence of a preceptorship program. These problems have a negative impact on nursing practice in clinical settings because of how they manifest themselves. The findings of the study indicate that there is a high probability of achieving favourable results by enhancing the internship program.

Abstract:Negative experiences on an internship can adversely affect the attitude and confidence of nursing students. This highlights the need to explore the experiences of nursing students as they progress through their training. The present study examines the challenges and problems faced by nursing students during their internship program at a hospital in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The study employed a qualitative exploratory study design by recruiting eight nursing students. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather data. Moreover, the data were thematically analyzed. The major challenges and problems experienced by the nursing students were lack of support, distrust, improper behavior, and absence of a preceptorship program. There is a negative impact of these issues on nursing practice in clinical settings. The study concludes that positive outcomes are likely to be achieved by improving the internship program.

Abstract:Interprofessional education is a process designed to facilitate knowledge exchange between healthcare professionals with the aim of improving learning, collaboration, and patient care. It helsps students gain a better understanding of communication, teamwork, and each profession's role. This study aims to examine Saudi undergraduate nursing students' attitudes and readiness for engagement in high-fidelity simulation interprofessional education and practice after training nurse educators in HFS. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 311 nursing students. The process of sampling was done by convenience and was not probabilistic. Participants were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire. The survey included demographic information as well as the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale. There was a positive attitude toward Interprofessional education among nursing students and a reasonable level of readiness. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale score was significantly associated with academic years (p ≤ 0.05). Nursing students have a positive attitude towards interprofessional education and are willing to engage in high-fidelity simulation activities. The integration of high-fidelity simulation in interprofessional education can significantly benefit nursing students by enhancing their clinical skills, decision-making abilities, and teamwork dynamics in a controlled environment.

The nursing profession in Saudi Arabia: an overview

Abstract:Aim: The study aims to provide an overview of the nursing profession in Saudi Arabia, including its history, educational development, workforce and professional practice. Background: Saudi Arabia is faced with a chronic shortage of Saudi nurses, accompanied by high rates of turnover. Expatriate nurses form a large proportion of the nursing workforce in Saudi healthcare facilities, with Saudis comprising only 29.1% of the total nursing workforce. Despite the fact that the proportion of Saudi nurses is very low in general, this rate is lower in the private health sector where local nurses comprise only 4.1% of the total. Methods: Data relating to the nursing profession in Saudi Arabia were extracted from published literature identified through search of a range of publically available databases such as Medline, CINAHL, Google Scholar, Saudi health databases, Saudi health journals, government reports and relevant texts. Obtained information was evaluated for relevance and grouped on a thematic basis. Conclusion: The status of nursing in Saudi Arabia should be enhanced in order to make it a worthwhile career. The media should engage in helping to promote a positive image of the nursing profession. The education sector should reconsider the length of nursing training (5 years compared with 3 years in many developed countries) while maintaining competent and safe practice. Reducing the financial burden on the nursing student through provision of additional financial support would encourage more students. In particular, nurses should be paid a full salary during the intern year as currently occurs with medical students.
Prepared to learn but unprepared for work: A cross sectional survey study exploring the preparedness, challenges, and needs of newly graduated nurses entering a hospital-based transition program

Abstract:The study aims to investigate new graduate nurses the perceptions of educational preparedness, their challenges, and their expectations during their transition to hospital care and introduction to work. Background: Previous research has raised questions about new graduate nurses' (NGNs) preparedness for work in the clinical setting, and transition programs have been implemented to smooth the transition process. Information about NGNs' expectations of both transition programs and their introduction to work when first entering the nursing profession is scarce. Design: A cross-sectional survey design was used. Method: NGNs enrolled in a regional transition program in six hospitals were recruited from three-cohorts during September 2021, January 2022 and September 2022. After responding to a survey both a qualitative and quantitative approach was used when analyzing responses. Results: Quantitative and qualitative findings derived from 248 NGNs responses showed that 65% of the NGNs perceived that nursing education in general prepared them for clinical work, that they were prepared for and committed to workplace learning but require support from a well-designed transition program as well as from colleagues and managers in their ward unit. The conclusion is that the preparation provided by nursing education as well as organizational factors in the healthcare workplace influence new graduate nurses' readiness for clinical work, the challenges they perceive, and their needs for learning and support.

Abstract:In 2021, the Directorate General of Nursing Affairs (DGNA) at the Ministry of Health (MOH) in the Sultanate of Oman has established a 12-month training program for new nursing graduates known as the Enhancement Training Program (ETP). The program aims to intensively train novice nurses in seven critical specialties and equip them with the specialty knowledge, skills, and professional competence required to deliver safe and specialized care to critically ill patients. This study aims to determine the levels of confidence, comfort, satisfaction, stress, and experiences of transition-to-practice among nurses who completed the program successfully, and to assess the differences in the levels of confidence, comfort, satisfaction, stress, and experiences of transition-to-practice among the nurses participated in different specialties. The study sample target the first cohort of nurses who participated in the ETP from June 2021 to June 2022 and passed the program successfully (n = 313). Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey was utilized to evaluate the experiences of the participating nurses. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 29 software used to analyze the collected data by performing descriptive analysis using means and standard deviations. Inferential analysis (analysis of variance [ANOVA]) was conducted to assess the variance between the groups so as to identify any statistical differences among the means of all the specialty groups. The findings of this study provide evidence supporting the effectiveness of the ETP in boosting the confidence, comfort, and satisfaction of novice nurses.

Abstract:Background Newly graduated nurses undergo stress and role adjustment as they transition into practice during the first year and continue to struggle beyond the first year. Determining their practice readiness can aid in the development of interventions to facilitate workplace readiness for nurses in their first two years entering the nursing profession. Objectives To examine (i) extent of practice readiness of new nurses in their role; and (ii) associations between nurses' practice readiness and demographic and occupational variables, and reasons for choosing nursing profession. Design A cross-sectional study. Settings and participants A total of 445 registered nurses who graduated within the last two years and working in an academic medical centre in Singapore. Methods Participants completed an online questionnaire with questions from Casey-Fink Readiness for Practice Survey and questions related to key competencies for future practice. Results More than half (57.5 %) identified at least three skills and procedures which they were uncomfortable performing independently as they transition into the clinical practice, including: (i) responding to emergency (ii) tracheostomy care; and (iii) chest tube care. The top three reasons for choosing nursing as a career were: (i) nursing is a stable industry (54.2 %); (ii) I want to help people (52.1 %); and (iii) able to work anywhere in the world (44.3 %). Nurses were most concerned with areas of trials and tribulations (42.5 %) and clinical competency (36.6 %). When compared to nurses in their first-year post-graduation, those working in their second year reported more confidence in the ability to problem solve ( p = 0.003), care for a person who is dying ( p = 0.004), and less difficulties in prioritizing care needs ( p = 0.04). They also perceived themselves as a good problem solver ( p = 0.03). Conclusions It is critical to continue supporting nurses' practice readiness beyond their first year of practice in their confidence and development of skills of higher complexity.

Student Academic Success Factors in Selected Nursing Collages in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Academic achievement is a crucial requirement for students to graduate, but its definition is complex and multifaceted. Academic aspects play a crucial role in nursing education, affecting students' success and development. Aim: The present study was conducted with aim to determine the student's perception about academic success also to assess the factors that affect students' academic success among nursing students is Saudi Arabia. Method: This research adopts a descriptive cross-sectional design to investigate factors influencing academic success among nursing students in selected Saudi Arabian colleges. The study is conducted at King Faisal University and Najran University, with a sample size of 400 nursing students chosen through purposive convenient sampling. Data is collected via a structured questionnaire covering socio-demographic details, learning styles, and perceptions of academic success. Findings: Results reveal a majority of nursing students who are predominantly female, aged 18-23, hailing from urban areas, and single. Most students willingly chose nursing, appreciate their specialty, and exhibit positive perceptions of academic success. Learning style preferences indicate a preference for cooperative learning, discovery learning, and self-education. Significant associations are identified between university choice and various demographic and academic factors. Perceptions about personal, psychological, college/university-related, home-related, and teacher-related factors are generally positive. Correlations between university choice and these perceptions are established. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the intricate factors influencing academic success among nursing students in Saudi Arabian colleges. Emphasizing the importance of university-specific dynamics in shaping students' experiences and perceptions, the findings contribute crucial information for tailoring educational strategies and interventions. Clinical Stress among Bachelor Nursing Students: A Qualitative Inquiry

Abstract:Background: Stress has been linked to different life stages. One of those stages is the transition during the college period. Nursing has been identified as one of the challenges that face student, as its deals with human life. In addition, high levels of stress may lead to health problems and academic dissatisfaction. Objective: To explore clinical stressors among nursing students in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This study employed a qualitative study design; therefore, the collection of data was employed using semi-structured face-to-face interviews with nursing students. Data were analyzed through the use of content analysis. Results: Analysis of the data identified three categories of students’ stressors during clinical training: the urge to learn, how to learn communication, and the nature of the hospital environment. Conclusion: As this study highlighted the clinical stressors facing nursing students, recommendations for nursing education and clinical environments are mentioned in order to ease the stressors.

Abstract:Background It is useful for nurses to be able to engage in reflective practice. Reflective practice is an essential aspect of experiential learning. Aim To explore how reflective practice training during an internship programme in Saudi Arabia affected nurse interns' critical thinking disposition and interpersonal communication competency. Method A convenience sample of 93 senior nursing students undertaking the internship programme at a nursing college in a university in Saudi Arabia answered a questionnaire before and after taking part in reflective practice training sessions. The questionnaire used three tools: the Reflective Practice Questionnaire; the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale; and the Interpersonal Communication Competency Scale. Results After the training, the overall mean scores for reflective practice, critical thinking disposition and interpersonal communication competency were significantly higher than before the training. Reflective practice had a positive correlation with critical thinking disposition and interpersonal communication competency. It also had predictive capability for the variance in critical thinking disposition and interpersonal communication competency (R2=0.798 and R2=0.553, respectively, P<0.001). Conclusion Reflective practice training provided to nurse interns in Saudi Arabia improved their reflective practice, critical thinking and interpersonal communication. Reflective practice training would be a useful addition to pre-graduate nurse education and to preceptorship or orientation programmes for newly recruited nurses.

Exploring the Relationship Between Burnout, Resilience, and Dropout Intention Among Nursing Students During Clinical Training in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background The issue of burnout syndrome among health discipline students is gaining heightened attention due to its serious effects, which causes them to have the intention to quit. Despite this, limited studies are available on the extent of burnout and its association with resilience and intention to drop out among clinical-level nursing students. Objective To explore the relationship between burnout, resilience, and intention to quit among nursing students. Methods An online questionnaire was used to conduct a cross-sectional study, targeting nursing students at the clinical level through a nonprobability sample. The participants were required to provide their sociodemographic, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Data was analyzed using descriptive, inferential, and correlation tests. Results The study included a group of 564 nursing students and interns, the majority of whom were female at a percentage of 78.9%. Among this group, 65% experienced a high level of burnout, with 42% experiencing emotional exhaustion, 54% experiencing depersonalization (DP), and 77% reporting low personal achievement. A total of 48% of clinical-level students were considering quitting the nursing program. Moreover, the students reported low scores of resilience, with negative correlations observed with DP ( r = −.12, p = .04) and positive correlation with low personal achievement ( r = .43, p < .001). Conclusion Nursing students and interns faced a significant amount of burnout and showed a desire to drop out nursing program. Their level of resilience was moderately low, and it correlated with burnout subscales DP and personal accomplishment. A collaborative intervention is needed to promote resiliency and alleviate burnout symptoms during clinical training.
