Abstract:Carbon nanofibers as constructed from various one-dimensional carbon nanostructure, such as sp(3) diamond nanowire, sp(2) carbon nanotubes, and carbyne, have received enormous interest from both scientific and engineering communities. The newly synthesized nanostructure carbon nanothreads (C_NTH) show superior properties and make them ideal building blocks for high-performance carbon nanofibers. This work systematically investigates the torsional properties of C_NTH bundles through high-throughput large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show that the torsional behavior of C_NTH bundles depends strongly on the loading direction. By adjusting the enantiomer ratios, we can effectively tune the mechanical properties of the bundle structure, including the strain energy density, elastic limit, and torsional rigidity. Benefiting from their rich structural varieties, this work suggests that carbon nanothreads are promising candidates for the next-generation high-performance carbon nanofiber.

Abstract:Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) metal molecular networks (MMNs) often exhibit a nanoconfinement effect and high degree of anisotropy, which are highly diverse in their mechanical, electronic, and magnetic functionalities. Here we report an interfacial self-assembly of mechanically robust 2D MMNs, in which 3d transition metals are interconnected via molecular thiol bridges. The Langmuir-Schafer assembled freestanding 2D nanosheets exhibit highly desired anisotropic charge transport and spin susceptibility, in which light and magnetic field induced charge transfer regulates the electronic interactions. Meanwhile, the mechanistic studies involving electronic structure reveal the molecular metal packing structure-controlled nanoconfinement and charge transfer. This study opens the door to 2D ultrathin metal coordination nanostructures for emerging functional materials and devices.
Assembling biphenylene into 3D porous metallic carbon allotrope for promising anode of lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Since the discovery of graphene, 2D carbon materials and their assembled 3D porous materials have been hotly pursued. Motivated by the recent successful synthesis of biphenylene [Science 372 (2021) 852], we design a biphenylene-nanoribbon-based 3D porous carbon allotrope. The assembled structure (named Tet-C52) possesses excellent stability, low mass density (0.86 g cm-3), and high electric conductivity due to its intrinsic metallicity. More importantly, Tet-C52 structure is found to be a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries, exhibiting a higher storage capacity (458 mAh g−1), lower diffusion energy barrier (0.09 eV), and smaller volume change (1.5%) than that of the commercialized graphite anode. For future fabrication, a possible synthesis procedure of Tet-C52 is also discussed for precursors and computed X-ray diffraction patterns.

Abstract:We constructed a series of novel 3D-BC2N structures that can be obtained by compressing well-mixed carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube arrays. Sequential theoretical calculations indicated a variety of electronic and mechanical properties, such as superhardness, tunable band gap, and ductility, for these novel 3D-BC2N polymorphs. In specific, 3D (6,6)-II, 3D (4,4)-II, 3D (8,8), 3D (6,6)-I and 3D (8,0) are energetically more favorable than previously proposed diamond-like beta-BC2N; the hardness of 3D (6,6)-II can reach a remarkably high value of 72 GPa; 3D (6,0) and 3D (8,0) are direct gap superhard phases; and 3D (10,0) has a semimetallic nature.

Abstract:Motivated by the successful synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) graphene monoliths, tremendous effort has been devoted to the design of 3D porous metallic carbon allotropes with rich topology by assembling various nanoribbons for the anode materials of metal-ion batteries in recent years. Going beyond the allotropes reported so far we propose a new 3D carbon monolith, Hex-C 57 , by using 5–7 nanoribbons observed in the experiment as the building block. Hex-C 57 is found to be dynamically, thermally, and mechanically stable, and electronically metallic. An analysis based on the tight-binding model reveals that the metallicity originates from the p z -orbitals of the sp 2 -hybridized carbon atoms, forming the conducting channels along the axial direction. With the advantages of intrinsic metallicity, mechanical ductility, and ordered pores, Hex-C 57 is a highly promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Calculations of the electrochemical properties show that Hex-C 57 possesses a high reversible gravimetric capacity (334.69 mAhg −1 ) and volumetric capacity (314.61 mAhcm −3 ), a small volume change (1.45%), very low diffusion barriers (0.046–0.070 eV), and a low average open-circuit voltage (0.18 V). This work not only expands the 3D porous carbon family with different nanoribbons as the building blocks, but also demonstrates the functionality of unconventional 5–7 carbon rings-assembled materials.

Abstract:Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional (2D) materials have paved a new routine for designing high-performance nanoelectronic devices. To facilitate the device applications, there are three key requirements for a material: sizeable band gap, high carrier mobility and robust environmental stability. However, for the hottest 2D materials studied in recent years, graphene is gapless, transition metal dichalcogenides have low carrier mobility, and black phosphorene is environmentally sensitive. So far, these three characteristics can seldom be satisfied in one single material. Therefore, it becomes a great challenge for finding an ideal 2D material to overcome such a limitation. In this work, we theoretically predict a novel planar 2D material: Penta-Pt2N4, which are designed by the fantastic Cario pentagonal tiling as well as the rare nitrogen double bond. Most significantly, the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 exhibits excellent intrinsic properties, including large direct band gap up to 1.51 eV, high carrier mobility up to 105 cm2V-1s-1, giant Young's module up to 0.70 TPa, and robust dynamic, thermal and chemical stability. Moreover, Penta-Pt2N4 is a global minimal with PtN2 stoichiometry in 2D, so we also propose a CVD/MBE scheme to enable its experimental synthesis. We envision that the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 may find a wide application for future nanoelectronics.

Abstract:The sp 2–sp 3-hybridized carbon allotropes with the advantage of two hybrid structures possess rich and fascinating electronic and mechanical properties and they have received long-standing attention. We design a class of versatile sp 2–sp 3 carbons composed of graphite and diamond structural units with variable sizes. This class of sp 2–sp 3 carbons is energetically more favorable than graphite under high pressure, and their mechanical and dynamical stabilities are further confirmed at ambient pressure. The calculations of band structure and mechanical properties indicate that this class of sp 2–sp 3 carbons not only exhibits peculiar electronic characteristics adjusted from semiconducting to metallic nature but also presents excellent mechanical characteristics, such as superhigh hardness and high ductility. These sp 2–sp 3 carbons have desirable properties across a broad range of potential applications.

Abstract:Carbon sp(2) building blocks such as graphene and carbon nanotubes hold great promises for structural and functional applications due to their intriguing material properties, which, unfortunately, fail to be upscaled into fibers or films as their macroscopic assemblies. The loss in performance originates from material imperfection and microstructural irregularities. From experimental evidences, we identify that their basic structural units are laminates of graphene sheets or closely-packed bundles of carbon nanotubes. Morphological corrugation and polydispersity in geometry, material properties, alignment are thus intrinsic features of their hierarchical structures in fibers or films, where loads are transferred through networks of tension-shear force chains. Microstructure-derived theoretical models are developed to accommodate these complexities and analyze overall properties. Predictions are consistent with experimental data for graphene films, where the film thickness and gauge length of samples in measurements are controlled.

Abstract:Due to the special electronic configuration, small atomic size, light mass, and flexible bonding features, carbon exhibits many different structural configurations with very different physical and chemical properties. Here we focus our discussion on three recent forms of carbon, namely, metallic carbon, magnetic carbon, and all-pentagon-based carbon. The metallic carbon can be used for metallic interconnects in future electronic circuits, nano devices and microprocessors while the magnetic carbon can have applications in spintronics. All-pentagon-based carbon nano-structure, penta-graphene, not only expands the family of carbon materials with a number of new features, but also provides the materials basis for the 2D packing of pentagons pursued by mathematicians for almost a century.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D) nanomaterials such as transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs) and graphene have attracted extensive interest as emergent materials, owing to their excellent properties that favor their future use in electronic devices, catalysis, optics, and biological- or energy-relevant areas. However, 2D nanosheets tend to easily restack and condense, which weakens their performance in many of these applications. Assembling these 2D nanosheets as building blocks for three-dimensional(3D) architectures not only maintains the intrinsic performances of the 2D nanostructures but also synergistically makes use of the advantages of the 3D microstructures to improve the overall material properties. In this critical review, we will highlight recent developments of sundry 2D nanosheet-assembled 3D architectures, including their design, synthesis, and potential applications. Their controllable syntheses, novel structures, and potential applications will be systematically explained, analyzed, and summarized. In the end, we will offer some perspective on the challenges facing future advancement of this field.

Abstract:Graphene was grown directly on porous nickel films, followed by the growth of controlled lengths of vertical carbon nanotube (CNT) forests that seamlessly emanate from the graphene surface. The metal-graphene-CNT structure is used to directly fabricate field-emitter devices and double-layer capacitors. The three-dimensional nanostructured hybrid materials, with better interfacial contacts and volume utilization, can stimulate the development of several energy-efficient technologies.

Abstract:Carbon has numerous one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) allotropic structures. The study of carbon materials has been a major focus of material science and condensed matter physics. Previous studies have identified different classes of topological semimetallic carbon allotropes with different topological phases. In this review, we first give a brief summary of the development of carbon allotropes from 1D to 3D. Next, we discuss topological properties of carbon materials and their physical origin. Then, we consider possible expansion of the topological study of carbon materials to other light-element materials such as boron. Finally, we present future prospects in pursue of topological physics within carbon allotropes.

Abstract:Carbon enjoys a vast number of allotropic forms, each possessing unique properties determined by the lattice structures and bonding characters. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose a new three-dimensional carbon allotrope--hC28. We show that hC28 possesses exceptional energetic, dynamical, thermal, and mechanical stability. It is energetically more stable than most other synthesized or proposed carbon allotropes. The material has a relatively small bulk modulus, but is thermally stable at temperatures as high as 2000 K. The structural, mechanical, x-ray diffraction, and electronic properties are systematically investigated. Particularly, we show that its low-energy band structure hosts multiple unconventional emergent fermions, including the quadratic-contact-point fermions, the birefringent Dirac fermions, and the triple-point fermions. We construct effective models to characterize each kind of fermions. Our work not only discovers a new carbon allotropic form, it also reveals remarkable mechanical and electronic properties for this new material, which may pave the way towards both fundamental studies as well as practical applications.

Abstract:Eight fascinating sp(2)- and sp(3)-hybridized carbon allotropes have been uncovered using a newly developed ab initio particle-swarm optimization methodology for crystal structure prediction. These crystalline allotropes can be viewed respectively as three-dimensional (3D) polymers of (4,0), (5,0), (7,0), (8,0), (9,0), (3,3), (4,4), and (6,6) carbon nanotubes, termed 3D-(n, 0) or 3D-(n, n) carbons. The ground-state energy calculations show that the carbons all have lower energies than C-60 fullerene, and some are energetically more stable than the van der Waals packing configurations of their nanotube parents. Owing to their unique configurations, they have distinctive electronic properties, high Young's moduli, high tensile strength, ultrahigh hardness, good ductility, and low density, and may be potentially applied to a variety of needs.

Abstract:Design and synthesis of 3D metallic carbon that is stable under ambient conditions has been a long-standing dream. We predict the existence of such phases, T6-and T14-carbon, consisting of interlocking hexagons. Their dynamic, mechanical, and thermal stabilities are confirmed by carrying out a variety of state-of-theart theoretical calculations. Unlike the previously studied K4 and the simple cubic high pressure metallic phases, the structures predicted in this work are stable under ambient conditions. Equally important, they may be synthesized chemically by using benzene or polyacenes molecules.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene have gained significant interest in the fields of materials science, electronics and biomedicine due to their interesting physiochemical properties. Typically these carbon nanomaterials have been dispersed in polymeric matrices at low concentrations to improve the functional properties of nanocomposites employed as two-dimensional (2D) substrates or three-dimensional (3D) porous scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. There has been a growing interest in the assembly of these nanomaterials into 2D and 3D architectures without the use of polymeric matrices, surfactants or binders. In this article, we review recent advances in the development of 2D or 3D all-carbon assemblies using carbon nanotubes or graphene as nanoscale building-block biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications.

Abstract:The development of architecturally unique molecular nanocarbons by bottom-up organic synthesis is essential for accessing functional organic materials awaiting technological developments in fields such as energy, electronics, and biomedicine. Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of a triptycene-based three-dimensional (3D) nanocarbon, GFN-1, with geometrical flexibility on account of its three peripheral pi-panels being capable of interconverting between two curved conformations. An effective through-space electronic communication among the three pi-panels of GFN-1 has been observed in its monocationic radical form, which exhibits an extensively delocalized spin density over the entire 3D pi-system as revealed by electron paramagnetic resonance and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopies. The flexible 3D molecular architecture of GFN-1, along with its densely packed superstructures in the presence of fullerenes, is revealed by microcrystal electron diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which establish the coexistence of both propeller and tweezer conformations in the solid state. GFN-1 exhibits strong binding affinities for fullerenes, leading to host-guest complexes that display rapid photoinduced electron transfer within a picosecond. The outcomes of this research could pave the way for the utilization of shape and electronically complementary nanocarbons in the construction of functional coassemblies.
A novel two-dimensional all-carbon Dirac node-line semimetal

Abstract:Carbon allotropes have vast potential in various applications, including superconductivity, energy storage, catalysis, and photoelectric semiconductor devices. Recently, there has been significant research interest in exploring new carbon materials that exhibit unique electronic structures. Here, we propose a novel two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope called TCH-SSH-2D, which possesses a Dirac node-line (DNL) semimetallic state. The structure of TCH-SSH-2D is derived from the TCH-type Archimedean polyhedral carbon cluster units, combined with the SSH lattice model, possessing a space group of tetragonal P4/mmm. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the system is dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable. It exhibits an energetically favorable structure with no imaginary frequency in the phonon dispersion curves and elastic constants satisfying the Born-Huang stability criterion. Our findings not only contribute to a deeper understanding of the carbon allotrope family but also provide an opportunity to explore unique Dirac states in two-dimensional pure carbon systems.
