Abstract:The most important tool for expressing thoughts and communicating information among people--- language has emerged some main changes as the development of modern science and technology. Thousands of new words have emerged in both English and Chinese. Their emergence reflects the new things; new thoughts and new ideas appeared in the fast developing society. This paper starts with the history of the study of word-formation, analyzes the main methods of word-formation of new words of English and Chinese, then compares their features of word-formation. Although English and Chinese belong to the different language system, their main methods of word-formation are the same. The reason leading to the distinction is the difference of each other’s culture, history and tradition. The biggest difference between them is: English is phonogram, but Chinese lays stress on matching the meaning. This also makes them show remarkable differences in absorbing and assimilating the loanwords. Using abundant examples and materials, the paper expounds the similarities and differences between them in different aspects, According to the study of these comparisons, it will do favor for us to find out English and Chinese new words’ features and their trend of development.

Abstract:The evolution of the English language, its changing in the situation of language contacts and functioning of English as an international means of communication have created a need for a more systematic analysis of related phenomena. In this paper, new English words which apparently appeared due to globalization and internationalization, have been considered. On the basis of authoritative theoretical approaches and several e-dictionaries, the words selected by means of continuous sampling method (more than 200 units) were analysed in terms of their semantics, morphology and spelling. Then they were classified into several thematic groups: 1) new words for naming natural and artificial versions of current English; 2) words classified with regard to social accents and dialects; 3) neologisms that reflect the English language domain and its interaction with indigenous languages. The morphological analysis revealed the application of different processes of word-formation, including neologisms and forms created according to traditional English patterns. Sometimes play on words and homo-acronyms were used in order to reinforce the meaning and connotation. Compounding and blending were found to be the most productive means of words formation within the corpus, and stylistic neologisms, used to mark a certain underlying sense proved to be the second most frequent process. It is demonstrated that studying of the currently active processes of word formation in the English language used as an international communication tool emphasizes the interdisciplinary aspect of such research programs.

Abstract:Language is a complex adaptive system, but how does it change? For investigating this process, four diachronic Chinese word co-occurrence networks have been built based on texts that were written during the last 2,000 years. By comparing the network indicators that are associated with the hierarchical features in language networks, we learn that the hierarchy of Chinese lexical networks has indeed evolved over time at three different levels. The connections of words at the micro level are continually weakening; the number of words in the meso-level communities has increased significantly; and the network is expanding at the macro level. This means that more and more words tend to be connected to medium-central words and form different communities. Meanwhile, fewer high-central words link these communities into a highly efficient small-world network. Understanding this process may be crucial for understanding the increasing structural complexity of the language system.

Abstract:The nativization of English is increasingly becoming a focus of attention in sociolinguistic circles.Under the premise that nativization is a legitimate reality,this paper first proposes a framework for describing and analyzing the nativized features of English.The framework covers three dimensions,i.e.,areas of manifestation(involving linguistic features at different levels),the extent of variation from native-speaker use,and effects of communication(i.e.,intelligibility and acceptability) in the international context.Then by reviewing various empirical studies on Outer and Expanding Circle Englishes over the last 20 years or so,the paper verifies the internal structure of the framework and the relationship between the included elements,and discusses the prospect of applying this framework in future nativization studies.
Analysis on the Word-formation of English Netspeak Neologism

Abstract:The emergence of computer-mediated communication provides a resourceful database for language researchers as well as learners. This study focuses on the Internet neologisms, a derivative of new media age, which in many ways affects the netizens in terms of communication. The collected data are examined empirically to figure out the characteristics of netspeak neologisms and their patterns of formation. It suggests that the most frequently occurring word-formation process of netspeak neologisms is compounding, subsequently, blending, affixation, old words with new meaning, acronyms, conversion, and clipping. Through probing into each process, the examples are illustrated and sub-categories are listed in terms of blending for further understanding. This study has proven that the diversity of word-formation processes of English netspeak neologism and may shed light on the creativity of language in the online context.

Abstract:The fact that languages are living organisms that evolve and vary as a result of different factors, including societal vicissitudes, cultural influences, technological advancements, migration and intercultural communication, among others, requires a continued effort to identify, characterize and represent the new lexical forms and meanings that emerge in various contexts and domains. Lexicologists and lexicographers thus need to always take on new challenges in their attempt to adequately describe and map our ever-changing language landscapes. Not only does everyday language change but also languages for special purposes (LSP) are subject to variation. On the one hand, new terms and senses are incorporated into already existing lexicons, while, on the other hand, micro-languages with a rich variety of novel lexical items keep appearing. Some cases in point are ecotourism discourse which has been accelerated by recent greater awareness of the impact of human activities on the environment (Penz & Fill, 2022); the language of digital technology, now that societies and technologies have become increasingly interconnected (Würschinger, 2021); certain medical talk, as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic (Salazar & Wild, 2022), to mention just a few areas of lexical innovation.

Abstract:The paper analyses new words and set expressions through their affiliation with different spheres of social life of the English-speaking community. The aim of the article is to analyse innovations by their distribution in the spheres of social life of the English-speaking society. The aim was reached by using both general scientific (analysis, synthesis, systematisation, classification, induction, deduction) and strictly linguistic methods (random sampling and observation method, lexico-semantic and contextual analysis, interpretation of dictionary definitions). In addition, the method of sociolinguistic analysis of the collected material was used. It aims to explore the relationship between language and society. Twelve groups of social life areas have been identified that have given a rise to entirely new innovations: innovations related to education and upbringing; innovations related to health sector; innovations related to generations; innovations related to gender aspect; innovations related to different diets, new recipes, and technologies in cooking; innovations related to sports, tourism, physical education, fitness; innovations related to environment; innovations related to COVID-19; innovations related to economy; innovations related to gadgets; innovations related to social media; innovations specified by modern information technology. The most expansive group is represented by the innovations related to the sphere of information technology, especially the social networks, which should be considered to be a new form of social communication. A certain number of new formations of economy and business denote new types and models of economic systems with the active role of ‘economy’ as the key word. Coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) has begot dozens of new words and expressions with the words Covid/corona being the centre of innovations. Quite a number of neologisms is focused on the environmental problems, namely – the problems of climate change, global warming. Considerable number of words and expressions denote new kinds of sport, tourism, fitness. The trend to minimise the consumption of meat and other animal products, to go on different diets, to become vegetarian, the new cooking technology and technique – these factors determine the coinage of new formations, associated with the sphere of food, nutrition, culinary. Special attention is given to the denomination of new kinds and brands of such a beverage as coffee. Women liberation movement, especially the struggle for equal role in political and public life, against discrimination and sexism is evidenced in coinages based on the analogy of the expression glass ceiling, fusions with the words man and mom (mum) as the first element. Replenished is the vocabulary associated with the names and characteristics of generations, especially the new ones. The sphere of medicine and health contributes to the formation of neologisms denoting new therapies, cosmetic surgery, and treatment procedures. New formations in the sphere of education reflect changes in this sphere, new approaches and methods. Newly coined phrases characterise types of families, relations between their members. Sociolinguistic analysis is combined with the description of active ways, types and productive elements contributing to the replenishment of English vocabulary. Thus, the innovations in English in the last decade have reflected changes in almost all spheres of social life. These changes are caused by emerging problems and the need to solve them. Particular attention has been paid to the verbalisation of new forms and means of social communication in the context of the information revolution. The most active mechanisms for the formation of neologisms are telescoping (so called portmanteau words) including analogy with telescoping and pure telescoping, forming compound words, especially according to the N+(pro-)N model, affixation, abbreviations, and acronyms.
The structure of online social networks modulates the rate of lexical change

Abstract:New words are regularly introduced to communities, yet not all of these words persist in a community's lexicon. Among the many factors contributing to lexical change, we focus on the understudied effect of social networks. We conduct a large-scale analysis of over 80k neologisms in 4420 online communities across a decade. Using Poisson regression and survival analysis, our study demonstrates that the community's network structure plays a significant role in lexical change. Apart from overall size, properties including dense connections, the lack of local clusters and more external contacts promote lexical innovation and retention. Unlike offline communities, these topic-based communities do not experience strong lexical levelling despite increased contact but accommodate more niche words. Our work provides support for the sociolinguistic hypothesis that lexical change is partially shaped by the structure of the underlying network but also uncovers findings specific to online communities.

Abstract:The article focuses on the study of synergetic approach to the principles of Modern English word-formation system structural organization and development. Word-formation is regarded as a complex open non-equilibrium system with non-linear scenarios of development. The structural organization of the English language in general and word-formation endo-system in particular ensures their ability to self-organize via accepting and adapting new language units, meanings and functions (in terms of synergetic – innovative substance, energy and information) or their dissipation. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of language units’ functional trans orientation which contributes to the enrichment of word-forming devices and leads to the improvement of verb creative mechanisms.

Abstract:This study quantitatively investigated word frequencies in parallel Chinese texts at three different periods, namely, Classical Chinese (1855), Beijing Mandarin (1908) and Modern Mandarin (2010), attempting to shed some light on the evolution of the Chinese language over the last 150 years. With the evolution of Chinese: both the types and tokens increased diachronically, and sharp changes can be found in the high-frequency function words, vocabulary richness, and the distribution of word classes. The syntactic structure has also become increasingly complex. In addition, although the length of words (measured in character) has increased diachronically, disyllabic words have not always been preponderant in Chinese after the opium war of 1840–1842. The results show that the complication is a crucial trend in the evolution process of Chinese.
