Abstract:It has now been several years since Pop Art appeared on the New York scene as a reaction to Abstract Expressionism's emphasis upon interior states of mind and moral absolutes. After the subsequent arrival of optical painting, it has become clear within the last year that the new constructivism has not spelled the doom of Pop. Instead, the movement has only demonstrated its vitality by growing and by ramifying into various sub-movements. Such adaptability can only characterize a style which, despite its startling originality, has firm roots in recent American traditions. To examine the traditional basis of Pop Art is not to challenge its novelty, but rather to confirm its validity and explain its immense popularity.
