Abstract:Chinn et al. demonstrate that self-touch promotes mirror self-recognition in human infants. Reaching to one's body while facing a mirror accelerates self-recognition, highlighting a heretofore overlooked role of the routine activity of self-touch in the development of self-awareness. Self-recognition emerges from sensorimotor activity.
