Abstract:Nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI)-mediated degradation of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) was investigated in a spiked soil under different conditions (iron sources, iron dosage, soil moisture, temperature, and soil types) and DDT-contaminated field. The degradation efficiency of p,p′-DDT by nZVI and nZVI coated with sodium oleate (SO-nZVI) was much higher than that by nZVI coated with polyimide (PI-nZVI). The rapid degradation of p,p′-DDT by nZVI only occurred in flooded soil. The degradation half-life of p,p′-DDT decreased significantly from 58.3 to 27.6 h with nZVI dosage from 0.5 to 2.0 % and from 46.5 to 32.0 h with temperature from 15 to 35 °C. The degradation efficiency of p,p′-DDT by nZVI differed in Jinhua (JH), Jiaxing (JX), Xiaoshan (XS), Huajiachi (HJC), and Heilongjiang (HLJ) soils. A good correlation was found between the degradation half-life of p,p′-DDT and multiple soil properties. The probable nZVI-mediated degradation pathway of p,p′-DDT in soil was proposed as DDT → DDD/DDE → DDNS → DDOH based on the metabolites identified by GC-MS. The in situ degradation efficiency of residual DDTs in a contaminated field was profoundly enhanced by the addition of nZVI as compared to the control. It is concluded that nZVI might be an efficient agent for the remediation of DDT-contaminated soil under anaerobic environment.

Abstract:To solve the problems existing in remediation of contaminated groundwater using nanoscale zero-valent iron （nZVI） such as aggregation, low migration and aging, some new progresses in this field were introduced in this paper in detail including modified nZVI and its effect on degradation of pollutants as well as different factors else. In addition, the degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants by nZVI was summarized. And then the degradation of some special materials such as emerging pollutants, pharmaceuticals and personal care products （PPCPs） was prospected.

Abstract:Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers pose potential threats to the environment and to public health due to their persistence and high toxicity. In this study, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) coupled with microbial degradation by indigenous microorganisms with and without biostimulation was employed to remediate soils highly polluted with HCH. The degradation efficiency of total HCHs in both the "nZVI-only" and "Non-amendment" treatments was approximately 50 %, while in the treatment amended with nZVI and acetate, 85 % of total HCHs was removed. Addition of nZVI and acetate resulted in enrichment of anaerobic microorganisms. The results of quantitative PCR (qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that Desulfotomaculum, Dehalobacter, Geobacter, and Desulfuromonas likely contributed to the depletion of HCH isomers. Moreover, some abiotic factors also favored this removal process, including pH, and the generation of iron sulfides as revealed by the result of Mössbauer spectrometer analysis. Our research provides an improved remediation strategy for soils polluted with HCH isomers and an understanding of the synergistic effect of nZVI and indigenous microorganisms.
Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Modified by Bentonite with Enhanced Cr(VI) Removal Efficiency, Improved Mobility, and Reduced Toxicity

Abstract:The aggregation of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles and their limited transport ability in environmental media hinder their application in environmental remediation. In this study, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency, transport performance, and toxicity of nZVI and bentonite-modified nZVI (B-nZVI) were investigated. Compared with nZVI, B-nZVI improved the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 10%, and also significantly increased the transport in quartz sand and soil. Increasing the flow rate can enhance the transport of nZVI and B-nZVI in the quartz sand columns. The transport of the two materials in different soils was negatively correlated with the clay composition. Besides, modification of nZVI by bentonite could reduce toxicity to luminous bacteria (Photobacterium phosphereum T3) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Compared with Fe-EDTA, the transfer factors of nZVI and B-nZVI were 65.0% and 66.4% lower, respectively. This indicated that although iron nanoparticles accumulated in the roots of ryegrass, they were difficult to be transported to the shoots. The results of this study indicate that B-nZVI has a strong application potential in in situ environmental remediation.

Abstract:The use of nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) for in situ remediation of soil contamination caused by heavy metals and organic pollutants has drawn great concern, primarily owing to its potential for excellent activity, low cost and low toxicity. This reviews considers recent advances in our understanding of the role of nZVI and enhanced nZVI strategy in the remediation of heavy metals and persistent organic contaminants polluted soil. The performance, the migration and transformation of nZVI affected by the soil physical and chemical conditions are summarized. However, the addition of nZVI inevitably disturbs the soil ecosystem, thus the impacts of nZVI on soil organisms are discussed. In order to further investigate the remediation effect of nZVI, physical, chemical and biological method combination with nZVI was developed to enhance the performance of nZVI. From a high efficient and environmentally friendly perspective, biological method enhanced nZVI technology will be future research needs. Possible improvement of nZVI-based materials and potential areas for further applications in soil remediation are also proposed.

Abstract:Chromium (Cr) is a common toxic heavy metal that is widely used in all kinds of industries, causing a series of environmental problems. Nanoscale zero- valent iron (nZVI) is considered to be an ideal remediation material for contaminated soil, especially for heavy metal pollutants. As a material of low toxicity and good activity, nZVI has been widely applied in the in situ remediation of soil hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) with mobility and toxicity in recent years. In this paper, some current technologies for the preparation of nZVI are summarized and the remediation mechanism of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil is proposed. Five classified modified nZVI materials are introduced and their remediation processes in Cr(VI)-contaminated soil are summarized. Key factors affecting the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil by nZVI are studied. Interaction mechanisms between nZVI-based materials and Cr(VI) are explored. This study provides a comprehensive review of the nZVI materials for the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil, which is conducive to reducing soil pollution.
Zero-Valent Iron Nanoparticles With Sustained High Reductive Activity For Carbon Tetrachloride Dechlorination

Abstract:Zero-Valent Iron nanoparticles (nZVI) have been extensively applied for the reduction of various recalcitrant organic contaminants, but their reactivity usually declines over time due to the formation of passive iron oxides. In this study we observed a sustained reactivity of nZVI for the dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CT) in water during several consecutive reaction cycles. The dechlorination rate constants increased substantially in Cycle 2, then remained at a high level over several consecutive cycles, and ultimately declined in Cycle 7. In the entire process, the solution pH increased only slightly from 7.0 to 7.8, which was different from other unbuffered nZVI reduction systems reported before. Characterization of the particle surface morphology and composition revealed an important role of Fe oxyhydroxide formation in self-buffering the solution pH and sustaining a high nZVI reactivity. Our study provides new knowledge on the nZVI dechlorination process and may offer implications for extending the lifetime of nZVI in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation applications.
Sulfidated nano zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) for in situ treatment of chlorinated solvents: A field study

Abstract:Sulfidated nano zerovalent iron (S-nZVI), stabilized with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), was successfully synthesized on site and injected into the subsurface at a site contaminated with a broad range of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (cVOCs). Transport of CMC-S-nZVI to the monitoring wells, both downgradient and upgradient, resulted in a significant decrease in concentrations of aqueous-phase cVOCs. Short-term (0-17 days) total boron and chloride measurements indicated dilution and displacement in these wells. Importantly however, compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA), changes in concentrations of intermediates, and increase in ethene concentrations confirmed dechlorination of cVOCs. Dissolution from the DNAPL pool into the aqueous phase at the deepest levels (4.0-4.5 m bgs) was identifiable from the increased cVOCs concentrations during long-term monitoring. However, at the uppermost levels (∼1.5 m above the source zone) a contrasting trend was observed indicating successful dechlorination. Changes in cVOCs concentrations and CSIA data suggest both sequential hydrogenolysis as well as reductive β-elimination as the possible transformation mechanisms during the short-term abiotic and long-term biotic dechlorination. One of the most positive outcomes of this CMC-S-nZVI field treatment is the non-accumulation of lower chlorinated VOCs, particularly vinyl chloride. Post-treatment soil cores also revealed significant decreases in cVOCs concentrations throughout the targeted treatment zones. Results from this field study show that sulfidation is a suitable amendment for developing more efficient nZVI-based in situ remediation technologies.
Degradation of Carbon Tetrachloride by nanoscale Zero‐Valent Iron @ magnetic Fe3O4: Impact of reaction condition, Kinetics, Thermodynamics and Mechanism

Abstract:Nano-scale zero-valent Iron (nZVI) attached on the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared and creatively applied in the reductive dechlorination of Carbon Tetrachloride (CT). The characterization results of the synthesized composite indicated a main component of nZVI particles assembled on the surface of Fe3O4 with a layer of iron-oxide film on the periphery, of which the dispersibility was better and the specific surface area was larger. The effects of different reaction conditions like temperature, initial pH values, Fe0@Fe3O4 dosage and initial CT concentrations on the removal of CT were evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the Fe0@Fe3O4 composites showed a CT removal efficiency of 89.1% in 60 min, which was much greater than that of nZVI (61.7%) and Fe3O4 particles (14.3%). The removal process obeyed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Synergy effects of the constituents in the composite which can promote the relative rates of mass transfer to reactive sites were proposed to be existed and the magnetism of Fe3O4 could help to overcome the aggregation and surface passivation problem of nZVI. Thus, Fe0@Fe3O4 nanoparticles in our study can effectively complete the reductive dechlorination of CT and an improved nZVI catalyst is provided for the remediation of chlorinated organic compounds.

Enhanced reductive dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyl-contaminated soil by in-vessel anaerobic composting with zero-valent iron

Abstract:Anaerobic dechlorination is an effective degradation pathway for higher chlorinated polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The enhanced reductive dechlorination of PCB-contaminated soil by anaerobic composting with zero-valent iron (ZVI) was studied, and preliminary reasons for the enhanced reductive dechlorination with ZVI were investigated. The results show that the addition of nanoscale ZVI can enhance dechlorination during in-vessel anaerobic composting. After 140 days, the average number of removed Cl per biphenyl with 10 mg g −1 of added nanoscale ZVI was 0.63, enhancing the dechlorination by 34 % and improving the initial dechlorination speed. The ZVI enhances dechlorination by providing a suitable acid base environment, reducing volatile fatty acid inhibition and stimulating the microorganisms. The C/N ratios for treatments with the highest rate of ZVI addition were smaller than for the control, indicating that ZVI addition can promote compost maturity.
Enhanced Removal of Cis-1,2-dichloroethene and Vinyl Chloride in Groundwater Using Ball-Milled Sulfur- and Biochar-Modified Zero-Valent Iron: from the Laboratory to the Field

Abstract:Sulfidated zero-valent iron (ZVI) and biochar-supported ZVI have received increasing attention for their potential to dechlorinate trichloroethylene. However, minimal data are available regarding the combined effect of sulfur and biochar ZVI on trichloroethylene byproducts. The primary aim of the current study is to determine whether sulfur- and biochar-modified ZVI (ZVI-BC-S) enhances the removal of cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE) and vinyl chloride (VC) from groundwater. Results show that biochar and sulfur facilitated the milling of ZVI-BC-S into micro- and nanoscale particles and increased FeS formation. Moreover, the rates of cDCE and VC removal by ZVI-S increased by 30.1% and 30.2%, respectively, compared to those obtained with ZVI, owing to enhanced dechlorination via β-elimination by sulfur. Meanwhile, treatment with ZVI-BC-S harnessed the benefits of biochar and sulfur to enhance the cDCE and VC removal rates by 62.0% and 67.7%, respectively. Mechanistically, biochar enhanced the corrosion of ZVI-S to increase FeS production and enhance the electron transfer, β-elimination, and hydrogenolysis involved in cDCE and VC dechlorination. The effectiveness of ZVI-BC-S was confirmed in a field demonstration, during which cDCE and VC concentrations significantly decreased within 10 days following injection. The findings of this study can help inform the rational design of ZVI for in-situ remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons in groundwater.
Effects and mechanisms of nZVI on CO2 and CH4 emissions in uncontaminated and pentachlorophenol-contaminated soils

Abstract:With the increasing application of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for in situ soil remediation, its effects on soil functionality and ecosystem need to be thoroughly evaluated. Herein, we investigated the effects of nZVI on CO2 and CH4 emissions from uncontaminated and pentachlorophenol (PCP)-contaminated soils and the underlying microbial mechanisms by designing a 68-day anaerobic soil culture experiment; thereafter, the effects of above aged nZVI on soil CO2 and CH4 emissions in the following 20 days were further studied. In the uncontaminated soil, 1-10 g/kg nZVI treatments reduced soil CO2 emission by 17.4-82.6% and increased soil CH4 emission by 10.8%-119.7%, but these effects disappeared after the nZVI was aged. The emissions of soil CO2 and CH4 were significantly inhibited by the PCP contamination (100 mg/kg) mainly due to the toxicity to related soil microorganisms. The applications of 1-10 g/kg nZVI significantly reduced CO2 emissions from the PCP-contaminated soil by 24.0-86.7%, while 10 g/kg nZVI markedly increased soil CH4 emission by 1875.4% and restored the methanogenic activity to the control level after the nZVI was aged. The 10 g/kg nZVI treatment enriched hydrogenotrophic methanogen (Methanobacterium) and organics-degrading bacteria by releasing H2, increasing soil pH, and decreasing soil Eh; the abundance of genes encoding key enzymes (Mcr, Mtr, Hdr, Mta, and Mtb) in all methanogenic pathways significantly increased after the nZVI treatment, indicating that nZVI could have a broad promoting effects on soil methanogenic processes. The findings demonstrate that the addition of nZVI for in situ remediation of organochlorines-contaminated soils will affect soil greenhouse gas emissions and provide basic data for safe nZVI applications.
Thermal Desorption of PCBs from Contaminated Soil Using Nano Zerovalent Iron.

Abstract:In this study, thermal desorption was combined with the addition of nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) to remediate polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated soil collected from a storage point for PCB-contaminated capacitors and transformers. The thermal desorption test conditions were varied from 300 to 600 °C, both with blank soil and with 100 mg of nZVI added. Next, the effect of the amount of nZVI added (0, 20, 40, 100, 200 mg) was investigated by thermal treatment at 400 °C. The test results show that thermal desorption eliminates most of the PCB load and that the presence of nZVI clearly enhances thermal desorption. After thermal treatment at 400 °C, a removal efficiency of 94.2 % was reached, with the use of 200 mg of nZVI. At 600 °C, the PCB removal efficiency after 1 h attained 98.35 % with 100 mg of nZVI and 97.40 % without nZVI. The presence of nZVI effectively decreased both the sum and the WHO-TEQ value of the 12 dl-PCBs.

Dechlorination of Excess Trichloroethene by Bimetallic and Sulfidated Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron

Abstract:Nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) likely finds its application in source zone remediation. Two approaches to modify nZVI have been reported: bimetal (Fe-Me) and sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI). However, previous research has primarily focused on enhancing particle reactivity with these two modifications under more plume-like conditions. In this study, we systematically compared the trichloroethene (TCE) dechlorination pathway, rate, and electron selectivity of Fe-Me (Me: Pd, Ni, Cu, and Ag), S-nZVI, and nZVI with excess TCE simulating source zone conditions. TCE dechlorination on Fe-Me was primarily via hydrogenolysis while that on S-nZVI and nZVI was mainly via β-elimination. The surface-area normalized TCE reduction rate ( k'SA) of Fe-Pd, S-nZVI, Fe-Ni, Fe-Cu, and Fe-Ag were ∼6800-, 190-, 130-, 20-, and 8-fold greater than nZVI. All bimetallic modification enhanced the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) while sulfidation inhibited HER. Fe-Cu and Fe-Ag negligibly enhanced electron utilization efficiency (εe) while Fe-Pd, Fe-Ni, and S-nZVI dramatically increased εe from 2% to ∼100%, 69%, and 72%, respectively. Adsorbed atomic hydrogen was identified to be responsible for the TCE dechlorination on Fe-Me but not on S-nZVI. The enhanced dechlorination rate along with the reduced HER of S-nZVI can be explained by that FeS conducting major electrons mediated TCE dechlorination while Fe oxides conducting minor electrons mediated HER.

Abstract:Nano-scale zero-valent iron particles (NZVI) are increasingly being used to treat sites contaminated with chlorinated solvents. This study investigated the effect of NZVI on dechlorinating microorganisms that participate in the anaerobic bioremediation of such sites. NZVI can have a biostimulatory effect associated with water-derived cathodic H2 production during its anaerobic corrosion (730±30μmol H2 was produced in 166h in abiotic controls with 1g/L NZVI) or an inhibitory effect upon contact with cell surfaces (assessed by transmission electron microscopy). Methanogens, which are known to compete for H2 with dechlorinators, were significantly biostimulated by NZVI and methane production increased relative to NZVI-free controls from 58±5 to 275±2μmol. In contrast, bacteria dechlorinating TCE were inhibited by NZVI, and the first-order degradation rate coefficient decreased from 0.115±0.005h−1 (R2=0.99) for controls to 0.053±0.003h−1 (R2=0.98) for treatments with 1g/L NZVI. Ethene production from TCE was initially inhibited by NZVI, but after 331h increased to levels observed for an NZVI-free system (7.6±0.3μmol ethene produced in 502h compared to 11.6±0.5mmol in the NZVI-free system and 3.8±0.3μmol ethene for NZVI alone). Apparently, cathodic H2 was utilized as electron donor by dechlorinating bacteria, which recovered following the partial oxidation and presumably passivation of the NZVI. Overall, these results suggest that reductive treatment of chlorinated solvent sites with NZVI might be enhanced by the concurrent or subsequent participation of bacteria that exploit cathodic depolarization and reductive dechlorination as metabolic niches.

In this study, the effects of sulfidation and emulsification treatment on the performance of nZVI reductive dechlorination of TCE under enhancement by an external electric field were evaluated. The hydrophobic oil film on the surface of sulfidized and emulsified zero-valent iron (S-EZVI) can sequestrate more than one-fifth of the unreacted TCE in the early stage of the experiment (at 5 min). The FeS layer formed on the surface of S-EZVI can facilitate the electron-transfer process and reduce the degree of corrosion of Fe0 with water by 94.0%. Electric-field-enhanced S-EZVI technology can remove more than 93.1% of TCE in the pH range 6.0-9.0, and the performances in overly acid and overly alkali environments both improved. Under the optimal conditions, the TCE removal rate and reaction constant of the applied electric field group reached 96.7% and 1.6 × 10-2 L g-1 min-1, respectively, which were much higher than those of the group without an electric field (53.2% and 3.3 × 10-3 L g-1 min-1) owing to rapid concurrent hydrogenolysis of dichloroethenes and vinyl chloride, or another transformation pathway, such as direct oxidation by the anode. Thereby, this method avoids accumulation of chlorinated intermediates, especially toxic vinyl chloride. This work shows that combination technology has many characteristics that are favorable for field application, and it is expected to provide a new reference and have application value for development of in situ efficient and thorough treatment of TCE-contaminated groundwater.

Abstract:In recent years, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been gradually applied in soil remediation due to its strong reducing ability and large specific surface area. Compared to conventional remediation solutions, in situ remediation using nZVI offers some unique advantages. In this review, respective merits and demerits of each approach to nZVI synthesis are summarized in detail, particularly the most commonly used aqueous-phase reduction method featuring surface modification. In order to overcome undesired oxidation and agglomeration of fresh nZVI due to its high reactivity, modifications of nZVI have been developed such as doping with transition metals, stabilization using macromolecules or surfactants, and sulfidation. Mechanisms underlying efficient removal of organic pollutants enabled by the modified nZVI lie in alleviative oxidation and agglomeration of nZVI and enhanced electron utilization efficiency. In addition to chemical modification, other assisting methods for further improving nZVI mobility and reactivity, such as electrokinetics and microbial technologies, are evaluated. The effects of different remediation technologies and soil physicochemical properties on remediation performance of nZVI are also summarized. Overall, this review offers an up-to-date comprehensive understanding of nZVI-driven soil remediation from scientific and practical perspectives.
Enhanced Mobility and Stability of Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron for As Contaminated Groundwater Remediation

Abstract:Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is a promising reagent for in situ remediations to transform groundwater contaminants into non-toxic compounds, but its utility in practical projects is limited by the poor radius of influence and rapid deactivation.. Herein, stabilized nZVIs are assembled with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/ sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and surface-modified carbon black (CB) to manipulate the charge, electron, and geometric structure of the interface to facilitate the transport property. The As(III) removal capacity and the effect of input velocity and iron strength on the transport and deposition behaviors of stabilized nZVIs in the aquifer filled with clayey soil are investigated. The optimal Fe/CB/CMC (wt.%=1:1:2) and Fe/CB/SDS (wt.%=1:2:1) suspensions display excellent As(Ⅲ) removal capacities of 80.7 and 90.7 mg g-1. Fe/CB/CMC-112 was more mobile than Fe/CB/SDS-121, that 74.81% and 81.95% of nZVI retained in the soil column, respectively. The high recoveries of stabilized nZVI with contaminated soil, lower input velocity, and higher ionic strength were tested, illustrating a significant impact of realistic chemical and hydrological conditions of the filling medium on the deposition of nZVI. This study demonstrates the feasibility of combining anionic surfactants and carbon supports to enhance the stability and mobility of nZVI for in situ remediations.

Abstract:The use of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for the purification of contaminated water and soil was investigated for its high potential to remove subsurface contaminants. In this study, the mechanism of diclofenac (DCF) degradation by nZVI and the combined process of nZVI and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are discussed. The results demonstrated that nZVI with acidic conditions had a certain degradation efficiency on DCF, with a removal rate about 30% in a 2-hour reaction at pH 5. The combined process of nZVI and H2O2 could obviously remove DCF, with a removal rate greater than 90% in a 2-hour reaction at pH 5. In nZVI system, under acidic and aerobic conditions, Fe2+ and H2O2 can be generated to form a Fenton-like system. Meanwhile, the release of electrons from nZVI could promote the reductive dechlorination of DCF. In nZVI/H2O2 system, the high removal rate of TOC was also showed the DCF mineralization by the Fenton-like oxidation.
