Abstract:Over the past years, nanostructured metalenses with thin form factors have been extensively studied for their potential in consumer and industrial applications. Despite significant advancements, current metalenses struggle to achieve high numerical aperture (NA), manufacturable structures, broad working bandwidth, and extended depth of focus (DOF) simultaneously. This paper introduces a comprehensive inverse design framework that facilitates the rapid development of polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, effective in both frequency and spatial domains. The framework employs shape-constrained topology optimization to define horizontal ring profiles, along with discrete particle swarm optimization to manage discretized ring heights. Two immersed silicon carbide metalenses are demonstrated to showcase this framework's capability, providing near-unity NAs for enhanced photon collection. The first design is an extended DOF metalens, exhibiting a DOF over four times the light wavelength and achieving a maximum diffraction efficiency of 23%, close to the theoretical limit. The second design achieves broadband achromaticity, suppressing chromatic aberrations across a wide 300 nm bandwidth (850-1150 nm) while maintaining an average diffraction efficiency of 10%. This methodology serves as a valuable tool for deploying functional metalenses with implications for nanophotonics, quantum optics, and quantum nanotechnology. An effective inverse design framework for polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, optimized for frequency and spatial domains is introduced. Using shape-constrained topology optimization and discrete particle swarm optimization, silicon carbide metalenses with extended-depth-of-focus and broadband achromaticity is developed across a 300 nm bandwidth, achieving maximum diffraction efficiencies of 23% and 13.6%, respectively. Abstract:Over the past decade, metalens exhibit great potential for applications in compact optical devices. By modulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of the incident light, metalens are applied in a variety of flat optical components, such as micro spectrometers, polarizers and light-field imaging. However, the intrinsic effect of metalens with large chromatic aberration significantly restricts its application in wide-spectrum imaging. Herein, we developed a broadband achromatic polarization insensitive metalens operating in the NIR region in transmission mode. The particle swarm algorithm was utilized to improve the wave aberration by optimizing the reference phase corresponds to each designed wavelength. FDTD simulation was conducted to characterize the focusing performance of the metalens. The focal length of the metalens changes less than 4µm as the incident wavelength is varied from 1µm to 1.4µm. The maximum focusing efficiency of the designed metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.45 is about 43% near wavelength λ = 1.33µm. This research also paves a way for the application of metalens in night vision imaging.

Abstract:Although metalens has made breakthroughs in various imaging applications due to its ultrathin, lightweight, and multi-functionality, simultaneously achieving wide field of view (WFOV) and achromatic imaging remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a harmonic metalens with a quadratic phase profile that enables WFOV imaging and achromatic imaging at certain discrete wavelengths. First, we quantitatively explain why the quadratic phase enables WFOV imaging using its Fourier Transform (FT). Second, we derive the complex-amplitude transmittance formula of a harmonic metalens. The derived formula integrating with the Angular Spectrum theory can calculate the transmitted field distributions of a harmonic metalens. Third, we propose an achromatic WFOV metalens based on the harmonic diffraction and quadratic phase at a large numerical aperture (NA=0.76), which enables achromatic imaging at wavelengths λ = 600 nm, 1200 nm with a wide field of view (FOV) of 100°. The proposed scheme will undoubtedly expand the applications of metalens in the imaging area.
High-efficiency broadband achromatic metalens in the visible

Abstract:The metalenses have been extensively studied for their compact and flexible characteristics in focusing and imaging applications. However, it remains a significant challenge to design a broadband achromatic metalens that maintains high efficiency under arbitrary polarization incidence. In this work, we design a broadband achromatic metalens that achieves polarization-independent, high-efficiency focusing by effectively utilizing both co-polarization and cross-polarization components of the transmitted light. Using a minimalist anisotropic nanofin library, we optimize the phase distribution of the metalens at each designed wavelength with the particle swarm algorithm. Numerical simulations demonstrate a stable focal length with a deviation of less than 4$\%$ and an average focusing efficiency of 80.5$\%$ in the visible wavelength range of 450 to 650 nm. Moreover, we design a multi-wavelength off-axis bi-focal metalens to demonstrate the flexible control of output light phase and dispersion achieved by this method. The generality of this design enables its implementation in various metasurface devices, accelerating applications in broadband imaging and virtual/augmented reality.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Metalens is a planar optical component that uses nanostructures with a thickness on the order of the wavelength to manipulate the wavefront of the incident light. A key problem, especially in color imaging and display applications, is the correction of chromatic aberration, which is an inherent effect caused by the dispersion of periodic lattices and resonance modes. However, the current achromatic metalenses either use the PB phase method that is only valid for circularly polarized light or nanostructures with complex cross sections that are difficult to manufacture. Here, we designed a broadband achromatic metalens for linearly polarized light from 450 to 800 nm. Rectangular titanium dioxide nanofins of various lengths and widths were applied to modulate the phase and dispersion of the incident light. The metalens can fulfill three target phases simultaneously by using an optimization method. The designed metalens has a stable focus from 450 to 800 nm with an average focusing efficiency of 64%. It can be potentially applied in microscopes, lithography machines, sensors, and displays.

Abstract:Compared with conventional lenses, metalenses can offer smaller form factor, light weight and new functionality, and have become the focus of the recent investigations of metasurface. To date, quite a lot of studies have been reported for chromatic aberration correction of metalenses. Noting most work was carried out to satisfy the required group delay or dispersion by introducing sophisticated and integrated nanopillars, which are obtained using computationally intensive global search algorithms. Generally, the design is time-consuming. Here, we propose an alternative scheme, where metalens that corrects the chromatic aberration can be designed by optimizing the spectral degree of freedom C(ω), rather than relying on time-consuming algorithms. The proposed metalens is compatible with the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication process. The numerically demonstrated metalens with a diameter of 200 μm and a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.24 has a small focal length fractional change (FLFC) of 4.1% over the wavelength of 9∼12 μm with an average efficiency of 51.7% in transmission mode. Moreover, the effect of fabrication deviations on the performance of the metalens is analyzed, showing critical dimension (CD) bias, sidewall angle and pillar height all have different levels of influence on the performance of the metalens.

Abstract:Metalens are planar lenses composed of the subwavelength arrays, which have unconventional and versatile functionalities to manipulate the light fields compared with the traditional lens. It is noted that the most metalens are designed in a monochromatic mode in the visible or mid-infrared range (mid-IR), however, the broadband range is needed in many practical applications, such as spectroscopy, sensing, and imaging. Here, we design and demonstrate a broadband achromatic dielectric metalens in the mid-IR range of 4 μm–5 μm for near diffraction-limited (1.0 λ ) focusing. The broadband achromatic propagation and focusing of the metalens are designed and simulated by constructing and optimizing the phase profile. The Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phases of all the elements contribute to the main phase increment of the whole phase profile of the metalens. The additional phase is constructed and optimized by using the random search algorithm to obtain the optimized size of all the elements. The focusing efficiency of the achromatic metalens is also optimized and averaged as the result of phase optimization within a wide band for the building elements, while it is lowered comparing with the regular metalens without broadband achromatic designing. Using this combined designing approach, various flat achromatic devices with the broadband metalens can find a new way for full-color detection and imaging.

Abstract:Achromatic focusing is essential for broadband operation, which has recently been realised from visible to infrared wavelengths using a metasurface. Similarly, multi-terahertz functional devices can be encoded in a desired metasurface phase profile. However, metalenses suffer from larger chromatic aberrations because of the intrinsic dispersion of each unit element. Here, we propose an achromatic metalens with C-shaped unit elements working from 0.3 to 0.8 THz with a bandwidth of approximately 91% over the centre frequency. The designed metalens possesses a high working efficiency of more than 68% at the peak and a relatively high numerical aperture of 0.385. We further demonstrate the robustness of our C-shaped metalens, considering lateral shape deformations and deviations in the etching depth. Our metalens design opens an avenue for future applications of terahertz meta-devices in spectroscopy, time-of-flight tomography and hyperspectral imaging systems.

Abstract:Metalenses offer a unique platform to focus light by manipulating the properties of an incoming light wavefront. It is still a challenge to create an achromatic polarization-independent metalens, because of the complexity of satisfying the phase profile and group delay at the same time. In this paper, we propose an achromatic and polarization-independent metalens based on four-fold symmetric LiNbO3 meta-unit elements which works well in the visible band from 400 to 760 nm. The numerical aperture of our metalens is 0.125, and the transmission efficiency is over 90%, the average focusing efficiency is nearly 71%.

Abstract:A key goal of metalens research is to achieve wavefront shaping of light using optical elements with thicknesses on the order of the wavelength. Such miniaturization is expected to lead to compact, nanoscale optical devices with applications in cameras, lighting, displays and wearable optics. However, retaining functionality while reducing device size has proven particularly challenging. For example, so far there has been no demonstration of broadband achromatic metalenses covering the entire visible spectrum. Here, we show that by judicious design of nanofins on a surface, it is possible to simultaneously control the phase, group delay and group delay dispersion of light, thereby achieving a transmissive achromatic metalens with large bandwidth. We demonstrate diffraction-limited achromatic focusing and achromatic imaging from 470 to 670 nm. Our metalens comprises only a single layer of nanostructures whose thickness is on the order of the wavelength, and does not involve spatial multiplexing or cascading. While this initial design (numerical aperture of 0.2) has an efficiency of about 20% at 500 nm, we discuss ways in which our approach may be further optimized to meet the demand of future applications.

Abstract:Metalenses composed of a large number of subwavelength nanostructures provide the possibility for the miniaturization and integration of the optical system. Broadband polarization-insensitive achromatic metalenses in the visible light spectrum have attracted researchers because of their wide applications in optical integrated imaging. This paper proposes a polarization-insensitive achromatic metalens operating over a continuous bandwidth from 470 nm to 700 nm. The silicon nitride nanopillars of 488 nm and 632.8 nm are interleaved by Fresnel zone spatial multiplexing method, and the particle swarm algorithm is used to optimize the phase compensation. The maximum time-bandwidth product in the phase library is 17.63. The designed focal length can be maintained in the visible light range from 470 nm to 700 nm. The average focusing efficiency reaches 31.71%. The metalens can achieve broadband achromatization using only one shape of nanopillar, which is simple in design and easy to fabricate. The proposed metalens is expected to play an important role in microscopic imaging, cameras, and other fields.

Abstract:Longitudinal optical field modulation is of critical importance in a wide range of applications, including optical imaging, spectroscopy, and optical manipulation. However, it remains a considerable challenge to realize a uniformly distributed light field with extended depth-of-focus. Here, a high-efficiency extended depth-of-focus metalens is proposed by adjoint-based topology-shape optimization approach, wherein the theoretical electric field intensity corresponding to a variable focal-length phase is utilized as the figure of merit. Using a dozen of metalens with random structure parameters as initial structures, the average focal depth of topology-shape optimized metalens is greatly improved up to 18.80 μm (about 29.7 λ ), which is 1.54 times higher than the diffraction-limited focal depth. Moreover, all the topology-shape optimized metalens exhibit high diffraction efficiency exceeding 0.7 over the whole focal depth range, which is approximately three times greater than that of the forward design. Our results offer a new insight into the design of extended depth-of-focus metalens and may find potential applications in imaging, holography, and optical fabrication.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have attracted much attention due to their great ability to manipulate the electromagnetic field over an ultra-compact profile, which facilities the realization of the next generation diffractive optical elements. However, the broadband performance of the metasurface-based optical devices is still subject to the chromatic aberration. Although the broadband achromatic metalenses have recently been studied, the diameters and numerical apertures of the metalens are still limited by the requirement of large phase compensation. Such large phase dispersion is usually realized by sophisticated nanostructures of extremely high aspect ratios that are not easy to fabricate. Here we propose a new kind of metalens by integrating the dielectric pillars with a multi-level phase plate, and achromatic focusing and imaging can be achieved in the wavelength range from 1100 to 1500 nm. In addition, a broadband achromatic meta-deflector is also proposed, which could refract broadband incident light with the same refractive angle. Our integrated metasurface can provide large phase compensation while alleviating the aspect ratios of the composing nanopillars, and shows potential applications in designing arbitrary metadevices with dispersion engineering properties.

Abstract:Midinfrared devices based on metalenses are of great utility for numerous applications, including free-space communication, imaging, and molecule sensing. However, because of the intrinsic dispersion of their building bricks, metalenses significantly suffer from large chromatic aberration. In this paper, we propose an achromatic metalens that can operate over a broad band of wavelengths in the infrared region from 3.7 to 4.5 μm for circularly polarized incidences. The Pancharatnam-Berry phase and the propagation phase are used to control the wavefront of light and eliminate the chromatic aberration, respectively. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we numerically study two devices: an achromatic focusing lens and a beam deflector. The simulation results demonstrate the devices have a focusing efficiency of about 20.7% in the infrared region from 3.7 to 4.5 μm . Abstract:Metasurfaces have shown excellent ability in manipulating light fields. However, the intrinsic chromatic aberration impairs the quality of their broadband operation, which is a serious problem restricting the application of metadevices, especially metalenses. In this paper, a polarization-independent broadband achromatic metalens composed of engineered structures that have spatially varying gradient sizes is devised to focus the light over the mid-infrared region from 3 to 5 µm. The proposed dielectric metalens is constructed by an array of meta-units with a hollowed square pillar. By tuning its structural parameters, the optical response of the meta-unit turns out to be broadband achromatic, insensitive to the polarization state, and of high efficiency. Numerical simulation results show that the designed metalens can significantly suppress chromatic aberrations over a broad mid-infrared and hold a focusing efficiency of nearly 75%. Our work is beneficial to improving the mid-infrared broadband imaging quality and detection efficiency.
