Abstract:Over the past twenty years, the knowledge and understanding of wastewater treatment have advanced extensively and moved away from empirically-based approaches to a first principles approach embracing chemistry, microbiology, physical and bioprocess engineering, and mathematics. Many of these advances have matured to the degree that they have been codified into mathematical models for simulation with computers. For a new generation of young scientists and engineers entering the wastewater treatment profession, the quantity, complexity and diversity of these new developments can be overwhelming, particularly in developing countries where access is not readily available to advanced level tertiary education courses in wastewater treatment.This book addresses this deficiency. Upon completion of this curriculum the modern approach of modelling and simulation to wastewater treatment plant design and operation, be it activated sludge, biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal, secondary settling tanks or biofilm systems, can be embraced with deeper insight, advanced knowledge and greater confidence.

Abstract:In this chapter we offer an overview of the fundamentals and applications of biological processes developed for wastewater treatment, including aerobic and anaerobic processes. Beginning here, readers may learn how biosolids are eventually produced during the biological treatment of wastewater. Abstract:Advanced wastewater treatment is the process that reduces the level of impurities in wastewater below that attainable through conventional secondary or biological treatment. It includes the removal of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen and a high percentage of suspended solids. The removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater has become an emerging worldwide concern because these compounds cause eutrophication in natural water. A post-treatment process is therefore required to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from the effluent. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to provide the deeper knowledge of membrane technology, membrane bioreactor, sequential batch reactor, moving bed biofilm reactor, nitrification, denitrification, phosphorus removal from wastewater, carbon adsorption, and provide a design of a sewage treatment plant using moving bed biofilm reactor technology.

Abstract:The present day wastewater treatment practise can be significantly improved when new microbial processes are introduced. In this paper a new concept is discussed along general lines. The concept consists of a first stage in which a maximal sludge production is achieved. In this way COD is removed as sludge and aeration requirements minimized. This sludge can be digested to yield methane for energy generation. The nitrogen removal is based on a partial oxidation to nitrite and subsequent denitrification with ammonium as electron donor.

Abstract:Wastewater biofiltration is a distinct process as compared to other biological treatments as the microorganisms are fixed to a support and wastewater flows through it to be treated. The biofiltration process technologies can be broadly divided into two categories—self-attached natural systems (conventional) and artificial fixation of microorganisms on polymeric materials (recent research advances). In advanced biofiltration systems, microorganisms are either immobilized on a support or entrapped on membranes or encapsulated and often offer enhanced biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids removal with respect to conventional fixed film technologies. Further, amelioration of BOD, and suspended solids removal of wastewater is achievable due to better understanding and control of the mechanisms and parameters that strengthen the binding of the biofilms to the artificial surfaces. Abstract:The increase in the generation of wastewater along with the presence of different recalcitrant pollutants has stressed the existing conventional biological treatment systems beyond capacity. Given the necessity of advanced biological treatment processes, moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) is preferred for treating high organic and nutrient load and recalcitrant contaminants with enhanced removal efficiency, less footprint, reduced operational difficulties, and increased technical feasibility for large-scale as well as package-based-unit implementation. The present review attempts comprehensive documentation on the application of the MBBR process, its advantages and disadvantages, and comparative analysis with other advanced biological processes. The influencing design and operational parameters, such as hydraulic retention time, filling ratio of carriers and wastewater in the reactor, aeration, biofilm thickness, etc., have significant effects on the performance of MBBR. Furthermore, some modifications/up-gradation of the MBBR are analyzed targeting the enhanced nitrification and denitrification, organic matter removal, reduction of cost during the operational phase, etc. Among them, modification of biocarriers, aeration techniques, hybridization of MBBR with other biological and physicochemical processes exhibited promising performance concerning the removal of organics and nutrients. The present review also highlighted the areas of further research on the MBBR based-systems, their sustainability aspects, and subsequent field-scale applications.

Characterization and treatment of the liquid effluents from the anaerobic digestion of biogenic solid waste

Abstract:The process wastewater generated by the fermentation of biogenic fractions of solid waste (biowaste) is characterized by very specific composition features, which sets it apart from the well known categories of wastewater. Up to now, there is a definite lack of practical experience and know-how in the treatment of those effluents. In view of the increasingly wide acceptance awarded to the fermentation process, it appears necessary, however, to include the treatment of the generated wastewater in the overall process and to grant it the same priority as the fermentation step. In this study, pilot-scale experiments were conducted over 200 days in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), with the wastewater from a full-scale Bavarian biowaste digestion plant. Characterization of the influent implementing molecular size distribution studies showed that 97% of the components were either in particular form or < 1 kD. The main classes of compounds present in these fractions have been identified. The treatment objectives of the SBR plant were carbon and nitrogen removal. Soluble COD removal efficiencies were comprised between 40 and 60%, yielding a residual, refractory COD concentration of about 2000 mg/L in the effluent. Ammonium removal efficiencies averaged 96% and denitrification occurred with the addition of acetic acid or pretreated biowaste as a carbon source. Pretreated biowaste also showed synergetic effects as a co-substrate for COD removal.

Abstract:Conventional wastewater treatment approaches such as activated sludge processes often rely on energy-intensive and resource-demanding processes. However, emerging technologies offer promising solutions to improve the sustainability of wastewater management. This review examines three innovative technologies, including anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR), partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A), and microalgae-based processes, and their potential advantages over traditional methods. AnMBR combine membrane filtration with anaerobic biological treatment, enabling high-quality effluent, reduced sludge production, and a compact footprint. The PN/A is a two-step biological process that can achieve efficient nitrogen removal with lower aeration requirements. Microalgae-based systems leverage photosynthetic organisms to remove nutrients and organic matter while generating biomass for potential resource recovery. Each alternative technology has strengths and limitations that must be carefully evaluated based on the site-specific factors, such as wastewater characteristics, treatment objectives, and local conditions. Continued research and technological development is necessary to address the remaining technical and economic barriers impeding their wider adoption. Integrating multiple alternative technologies in a treatment train can help optimize overall performance by leveraging the complementary advantages of different processes. This holistic approach can advance the sustainable wastewater management, promoting resource efficiency, energy savings, and environmental protection.

Abstract:Advancements in biological wastewater treatment with sustainable and circularity approaches have a wide scope of application. Biological wastewater treatment is widely used to remove/recover organic pollutants and nutrients from a diverse wastewater spectrum. However, conventional biological processes face challenges, such as low efficiency, high energy consumption, and the generation of excess sludge. To overcome these limitations, integrated strategies that combine biological treatment with other physical, chemical, or biological methods have been developed and applied in recent years. This review emphasizes the recent advances in integrated strategies for biological wastewater treatment, focusing on their mechanisms, benefits, challenges, and prospects. The review also discusses the potential applications of integrated strategies for diverse wastewater treatment towards green energy and resource recovery, along with low-carbon fuel production. Biological treatment methods, viz., bioremediation, electro-coagulation, electro-flocculation, electro-Fenton, advanced oxidation, electro-oxidation, bioelectrochemical systems, and photo-remediation, are summarized with respect to non-genetically modified metabolic reactions. Different conducting materials (CMs) play a significant role in mass/charge transfer metabolic processes and aid in enhancing fermentation rates. Carbon, metal, and nano-based CMs hybridization in different processes provide favorable conditions to the fermentative biocatalyst and trigger their activity towards overcoming the limitations of the conventional process. The emerging field of nanotechnology provides novel additional opportunities to surmount the constraints of conventional process for enhanced waste remediation and resource valorization. Holistically, integrated strategies are promising alternatives for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of biological wastewater treatment while also contributing to the circular economy and environmental protection.

Abstract:The processing of numerous experimental data shows that the high-level and rough treatments of multicomponent sewage water follow different laws. In the case of rough treatment, the classical Monod's model is fairly adequate to the experiment. High concentrations of a pollutant "saturate" the complex of microorganisms (activated sludge or biofilm) and the general oxidation process follows a zero order for the substrate. In the case of high-level treatment, the model of an n order (n > 1) for the substrate is adequate to the experiment. Generalized models of aerobic treatment, independent of the reactor type (an aeration tank, trickling filter, rotating disk), are proposed.

Abstract:The economic opportunity and quality of human life depend upon the continued availability of a life-sustaining environment. Understanding how we and other organisms affect, and are affected by, our environment is an important first step toward maintaining a sustainable future. As environmental engineers, we have to deal with natural systems and also expand our conceptualization of environmental engineering to include societal, legal and financial aspects. Water, by its very nature, is vital for the survival of life on the earth. If today, the struggle amongst the nations is for the resources such as oil, a survey of the United Nations suggests that in the future, it will be a struggle for drinking water. This shows how much importance we have to pay to the water and water quality to assure our future generation of a life-sustainable environment to live upon. As industrialization and population growth continues, the problem of eutrophication, which is the accelerated ageing of lakes and estuaries, etc., due to excess plant and algal growth has been and going to be witnessed all over the world. This is the result of discharges of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus to these water bodies. Hence, environmental engineers are working hard in designing the wastewater treatment system that could remove these pollutants in an efficient and cost effective way. The components in wastewater treatment processes may be conveniently categorized as physical, chemical and biological operations, but understanding the principles governing their behaviour is a prerequisite for successful process design. Biological wastewater treatment has seen a significant growth in the last 25 years. Particular occurrence was recognition of the many events that can happen simultaneously in biological processes and the role that the design engineer has in determining which predominates. The impact on process design of this recognition demanded that the present and future environmental engineers begin to think in multiple events rather than compartmentalizing them. These necessitate the need for better understanding of microbiology and reactor engineering to achieve the improved results in biological wastewater treatment. In the part of literature review, emphasis has been made to understand the nature of biochemical operations, kinetics, stoichiometry and some conflicts of the major reactions occurring in different environments and design processes. However, the important aspect of understanding and appreciating the complex interactions occurring among the micro-organisms that form the ecosystems in the biological process operations has been discussed in length in the section recent research part. Some conflicts have arisen in a single biological wastewater treatment system that simultaneously removes nitrogen and phosphorus. Therefore, resolving these conflicts and enhancing the process performance are the primary goal of this project work. An effort has been made to modify the process design and combine continuous stirred tank reactor and rotating biological contactors to overcome these conflicts. The combined hybrid system will provide two kinds bacteria population: suspended activated sludge bacteria and biofilm bacteria. Together, these can improve the efficiency of simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from the municipal wastewater.
