Abstract:In this article we generalize packing density problems from permutations to patterns with repeated letters and generalized patterns. We are able to find the packing density for some classes of patterns and several other short patterns.

Abstract:In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items) arrive one by one, each item must be packed into a square bin of unit size on its arrival without any information about future items. When packing items, 90°-rotation is allowed. 1-space bounded means there is only one “active” bin. If the “active” bin cannot accommodate the coming item, it will be closed and a new bin will be opened. The objective is to minimize the total number of bins used for packing all items in the sequence.

Abstract:We study scaling limits of random permutations ("permutons") constrained by having fixed densities of a finite number of patterns. We show that the limit shapes are determined by maximizing entropy over permutons with those constraints. In particular, we compute (exactly or numerically) the limit shapes with fixed \hbox{12} density, with fixed \hbox{12} and \hbox{123} densities, with fixed \hbox{12} density and the sum of \hbox{123} and \hbox{213} densities, and with fixed \hbox{123} and \hbox{321} densities. In the last case we explore a particular phase transition. To obtain our results, we also provide a description of permutons using a dynamic construction.

Abstract:This paper studies permutation statistics that count occurrences of patterns. Their expected values on a product of $t$ permutations chosen randomly from $\Gamma \subseteq S_{n}$, where $\Gamma$ is a union of conjugacy classes, are considered. Hultman has described a method for computing such an expected value, denoted $\mathbb{E}_{\Gamma}(s,t)$, of a statistic $s$, when $\Gamma$ is a union of conjugacy classes of $S_{n}$. The only prerequisite is that the mean of $s$ over the conjugacy classes is written as a linear combination of irreducible characters of $S_{n}$. Therefore, the main focus of this article is to express the means of pattern-counting statistics as such linear combinations. A procedure for calculating such expressions for statistics counting occurrences of classical and vincular patterns of length 3 is developed, and is then used to calculate all these expressions. The results can be used to compute $\mathbb{E}_{\Gamma}(s,t)$ for all the above statistics, and for all functions on $S_{n}$ that are linear combinations of them.

Abstract:We develop a new, powerful method for counting elements in a multiset. As a first application, we use this algorithm to study the number of occurrences of patterns in a permutation. For patterns of length 3 there are two Wilf classes, and the general behaviour of these is reasonably well-known. We slightly extend some of the known results in that case, and exhaustively study the case of patterns of length 4, about which there is little previous knowledge. For such patterns, there are seven Wilf classes, and based on extensive enumerations and careful series analysis, we have conjectured the asymptotic behaviour for all classes.

Abstract:In [BS] Babson and Steingrimsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. Let $f_{\tau;r}(n)$ be the number of $1\mn3\mn2$-avoiding permutations on $n$ letters that contain exactly $r$ occurrences of $\tau$, where $\tau$ a generalized pattern on $k$ letters. Let $F_{\tau;r}(x)$ and $F_\tau(x,y)$ be the generating functions defined by $F_{\tau;r}(x)=\sum_{n\geq0} f_{\tau;r}(n)x^n$ and $F_\tau(x,y)=\sum_{r\geq0}F_{\tau;r}(x)y^r$. We find an explicit expression for $F_\tau(x,y)$ in the form of a continued fraction for where $\tau$ given as a generalized pattern; $\tau=12\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $\tau=21\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $\tau=123... k$, or $\tau=k... 321$. In particularly, we find $F_\tau(x,y)$ for any $\tau$ generalized pattern of length 3. This allows us to express $F_{\tau;r}(x)$ via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, and continued fractions.

Patterns in Multi-dimensional Permutations

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a general framework that extends the theory of permutation patterns to higher dimensions and unifies several combinatorial objects studied in the literature. Our approach involves introducing the concept of a "level" for an element in a multi-dimensional permutation, which can be defined in multiple ways. We consider two natural definitions of a level, each establishing connections to other combinatorial sequences found in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). Our framework allows us to offer combinatorial interpretations for various sequences found in the OEIS, many of which previously lacked such interpretations. As a notable example, we introduce an elegant combinatorial interpretation for the Springer numbers: they count weakly increasing 3-dimensional permutations under the definition of levels determined by maximal entries.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent proof of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture, we study the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a generalized pattern. Generalized patterns allow the requirement that some pairs of letters must be adjacent in an occurrence of the pattern in the permutation, and consecutive patterns are a particular case of them. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern, showing that they are an exponentially small proportion of the total number of permutations. For some other generalized patterns we give partial results, showing that the number of permutations avoiding them grows faster than for classical patterns but more slowly than for consecutive patterns.

Abstract:Parastichies are spiral patterns observed in plants and numerical patterns generated using golden angle method. We generalize this method using Markoff theory and the theory of product of linear forms, to obtain a packing theory on Riemannian manifolds of general dimensions n with a locally diagonalizable metric, including the Euclidean spaces. From the theory, point packings on a plane with logarithmic spirals and on a 3D ball (3D analogue of the Vogel spiral) are newly obtained. We prove that the method is applicable to generate almost uniformly distributed point sets on any smooth Riemannian surfaces in a local sense. We also discuss how to extend it to a global packing in some special cases including the case of packing on a disc such as the Vogel spiral. The packing density is bounded below by approximately 0.7 for surfaces and 0.38 for 3-manifolds under the most general assumption.

Abstract:The main theme of this paper is the enumeration of the occurrence of a pattern in words and permutations. We mainly focus on asymptotic properties of the sequence $f_r^v(k,n),$ the number of $n$-array $k$-ary words that contain a given pattern $v$ exactly $r$ times. In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior of the random variable $X_n,$ the number of pattern occurrences in a random $n$-array word. The two topics are closely related through the identity $P(X_n=r) = $ $\frac{1}{k^n}f_r^v(k,n).$ In particular, we show that for any $r\geq 0,$ the Stanley-Wilf sequence $\bigl(f_r^v(k,n)\bigr)^{1/n}$ converges to a limit independent of $r,$ and determine the value of the limit. We then obtain several limit theorems for the distribution of $X_n,$ including a CLT, large deviation estimates, and the exact growth rate of the entropy of $X_n.$ Furthermore, we introduce a concept of weak avoidance and link it to a certain family of non-product measures on words that penalize pattern occurrences but do not forbid them entirely. We analyze this family of probability measures in a small parameter regime, where the distributions can be understood as a perturbation of a uniform measure. Finally, we extend some of our results for words, including the one regarding the equivalence of the limits of the Stanley-Wilf sequences, to pattern occurrences in permutations.

Abstract:Packing, covering and tiling is a fascinating subject in pure mathematics. It mainly deals with arrangement patterns and efficiencies of geometric objects. This subject has a long and rich history, even back to Kepler, Newton, Lagrange and Gauss. Inspired by its applications and with the help of computing methods, in recent years it has become a very active research area in mathematics once again. Most of the fundamental problems in this subject can be characterized as simple sounding but challenging. This subject has important applications in many other areas such as Number Theory, Logic, Complex Analysis, Optimization, Coding Theory, Crystallography, Material Science, Industry, and even Biology. In spite of the long history, many of its key problems are still open, even in the plane. The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive review for packing, covering and tiling in the two-dimensional spaces. We will focus on the key problems, the fundamental results, the creative ideas, some important applications, and some significant connections with other areas.

Abstract:The extension of pattern avoidance from ordinary permutations to those on multisets gave birth to several interesting enumerative results. We study permutations on regular multisets, i.e., multisets in which each element occurs the same number of times. For this case, we close a gap in the work of Heubach and Mansour (2006) and complete the study of permutations avoiding a pair of patterns of length three. In all studied cases, closed enumeration formulae are given and well-known sequences appear. We conclude this paper by some remarks on a generalization of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture to permutations on multisets and words.

Abstract:A permutation is layered if it contains neither 231 nor 312 as a pattern. It is known that, if $\sigma$ is a layered permutation, then the density of $\sigma$ in a permutation of order $n$ is maximized by a layered permutation. Albert, Atkinson, Handley, Holton and Stromquist [Electron. J. Combin. 9 (2002), R#5] claimed that the density of a layered permutation with layers of sizes $(a,1,b)$ where $a,b\geq2$ is asymptotically maximized by layered permutations with a bounded number of layers, and conjectured that the same holds if a layered permutation has no consecutive layers of size one and its first and last layers are of size at least two. We show that, if $\sigma$ is a layered permutation whose first layer is sufficiently large and second layer is of size one, then the number of layers tends to infinity in every sequence of layered permutations asymptotically maximizing the density of $\sigma$. This disproves the conjecture and the claim of Albert et al. We complement this result by giving sufficient conditions on a layered permutation to have asymptotic or exact maximizers with a bounded number of layers.

Order in disordered packings with and without permutation symmetry

Abstract:A disordered solid, such as an athermal jammed packing of soft spheres, exists in a rugged potential-energy landscape in which there are a myriad of stable configurations that defy easy enumeration and characterization. Nevertheless, in three-dimensional monodisperse particle packings, we demonstrate an astonishing regularity in the distribution of basin volumes. The probability of landing randomly in a basin is proportional to its volume. Ordering the basins according to their probability, $P(n)$, from the largest at $n=1$ to smaller at larger $n$, we find approximately: $P(n) \propto n^{-1}$. This order, persisting up to the largest systems for which we can collect sufficient data, has implications for the dynamics of a system as it evolves under perturbations. In monodisperse packings there is ``permutation symmetry'' since identical particles can always be interchanged without affecting the system or its properties. Introducing any distribution of radii breaks this symmetry and leads to a proliferation of distinct configurations. We present an algorithm that partially restores permutation symmetry to such polydisperse packings.

On $d$-permutations and Pattern Avoidance Classes

Abstract:Multidimensional permutations, or $d$-permutations, are represented by their diagrams on $[n]^d$ such that there exists exactly one point per hyperplane $x_i$ that satisfies $x_i= j$ for $i \in [d]$ and $j \in [n]$. Bonichon and Morel previously enumerated $3$-permutations avoiding small patterns, and we extend their results by first proving four conjectures, which exhaustively enumerate $3$-permutations avoiding any two fixed patterns of size $3$. We further provide a enumerative result relating $3$-permutation avoidance classes with their respective recurrence relations. In particular, we show a recurrence relation for $3$-permutations avoiding the patterns $132$ and $213$, which contributes a new sequence to the OEIS database. We then extend our results to completely enumerate $3$-permutations avoiding three patterns of size $3$.

Abstract:For a finite set of integers such that the first few gaps between its consecutive elements equal $a$, while the remaining gaps equal $b$, we study dense packings of its translates on the line. We obtain an explicit lower bound on the corresponding optimal density, conjecture its tightness, and prove it in case one of the gap lengths, $a$ or $b$, appears only once. This is equivalent to a Motzkin problem on the independence ratio of certain integer distance graphs.

Abstract:We prove that any class of permutations defined by avoiding a partially ordered pattern (POP) with height at most two has a regular insertion encoding and thus has a rational generating function. Then, we use Combinatorial Exploration to find combinatorial specifications and generating functions for hundreds of other permutation classes defined by avoiding a size 5 POP, allowing us to resolve several conjectures of Gao and Kitaev and of Chen and Lin.

Abstract:A Cayley permutation is a word of positive integers such that if a letter appears in this word, then all positive integers smaller than that letter also appear. We initiate a systematic study of pattern avoidance on Cayley permutations adopting a combinatorial species approach. Our methods lead to species equations, generating series, and counting formulas for Cayley permutations avoiding any pattern of length at most three. We also introduce the species of primitive structures as a generalization of Cayley permutations with no "flat steps". Finally, we explore various notions of Wilf equivalence arising in this context.

Abstract:Bin packing is a typical optimization problem with many real-world application scenarios. In the online bin packing problem, a sequence of items is revealed one at a time, and each item must be packed into a bin immediately after its arrival. Inspired by duality in optimization, we proposed pattern-based adaptive heuristics for the online bin packing problem. The idea is to predict the distribution of items based on packed items, and to apply this information in packing future arrival items in order to handle uncertainty in online bin packing. A pattern in bin packing is a combination of items that can be packed into a single bin. Patterns selected according to past items are adopted and periodically updated in scheduling future items in the algorithm. Symmetry in patterns and the stability of patterns in the online bin packing problem are discussed. We have implemented the algorithm and compared it with the Best-Fit in a series of experiments with various distribution of items to show its effectiveness.
