Abstract:Infinite time Turing machines extend the operation of ordinary Turing machines into transfinite ordinal time. By doing so, they provide a natural model of infinitary computability, a theoretical setting for the analysis of the power and limitations of supertask algorithms.

Abstract:We introduce a model of infinitary computation which enhances the infinite time Turing machine model slightly but in a natural way by giving the machines the capability of detecting cardinal stages of computation. The computational strength with respect to ITTMs is determined to be precisely that of the strong halting problem and the nature of the new characteristic ordinals (clockable, writable, etc.) is explored.

Abstract:We describe the basic theory of infinite time Turing machines and some recent developments, including the infinite time degree theory, infinite time complexity theory, and infinite time computable model theory. We focus particularly on the application of infinite time Turing machines to the analysis of the hierarchy of equivalence relations on the reals, in analogy with the theory arising from Borel reducibility. We define a notion of infinite time reducibility, which lifts much of the Borel theory into the class $\bm{\Delta}^1_2$ in a satisfying way.

Abstract:We consider how changes in transfinite machine architecture can sometimes alter substantially their capabilities. We approach the subject by answering three open problems touching on: firstly differing halting time considerations for machines with multiple as opposed to single heads, secondly space requirements, and lastly limit rules. We: 1) use admissibility theory, $\Sigma_{2}$-codes and $\Pi_{3}$-reflection properties in the constructible hierarchy to classify the halting times of ITTMs with multiple independent heads; the same for Ordinal Turing Machines which have $\tmop{On}$ length tapes; 2) determine which admissible lengths of tapes for transfinite time machines with long tapes allow the machine to address each of their cells - a question raised by B. Rin; 3) characterise exactly the strength and behaviour of transfinitely acting Blum-Shub-Smale machines using a $\tmop{Liminf}$ rule on their registers - thereby establishing there is a universal such machine. This is in contradistinction to the machine using a `continuity' rule which fails to be universal.

Abstract:We present the first known solution to the original supertask, the Thomson Lamp Paradox. We also offer preliminary resources for classifying computational complexity of various supertasks. In so doing we consider a newly apparent paradox between the metrical limit and the ordinal limit. We use this distinction between the metrical and ordinal limits to explain the shortcomings both of Thomson's original formulation of the Lamp Paradox and Benacerraf's consequent critique. We resolve this paradox through a careful consideration of transfinite ordinals and locate its ambiguity as inherent to the identity relation under logic with a close reading of Frege's Begriffsschrift. With this close reading in hand we expose how the identity relation is counter-intuitively polyvalent and, with supertasks, how the logico-mathematical field operates on the basis of Deleuzian point-folds. Our results combine resources from philosophy, mathematics, and computer science to ground the field of hypercomputation for logically rigorous study.

Abstract:Using nonstandard analysis, we will extend the classical Turing machines into the internal Turing machines. The internal Turing machines have the capability to work with infinite ($*$-finite) number of bits while keeping the finite combinatoric structures of the classical Turing machines. We will show the following. The internal deterministic Turing machines can do in $*$-polynomial time what a classical deterministic Turing machine can do in an arbitrary finite amount of time. Given an element of $<M;x>\in HALT$ (more precisely, the $*$-embedding of $HALT$), there is an internal deterministic Turing machine which will take $<M;x>$ as input and halt in the $"yes"$ state. The language ${}^*Halt$ can not be decided by the internal deterministic Turing machines. The internal deterministic Turing machines can be viewed as the asymptotic behavior of finite precision approximation to real number computations. It is possible to use the internal probabilistic Turing machines to simulate finite state quantum mechanics with infinite precision. This simulation suggests that no information can be transmitted instantaneously and at the same time, the Turing machine model can simulate instantaneous collapse of the wave function. The internal deterministic Turing machines are powerful, but if $P \neq NP$, then there are internal problems which the internal deterministic Turing machines can solve but not in $*$-polynomial time.

Abstract:Incomputability as a mathematical notion arose from work of Alan Turing and Alonzo Church in the 1930s. Like Turing himself, it attracted less attention than it deserved beyond the confines of mathematics. Today our experiences in computer science, physics, biology, artificial intelligence, economics and the humanities point to the importance of the notion for understanding the world around us. This article takes a Turing centenary look at how the interface between the computable world and the incomputable formed a central theme in Turing's work - from the early establishment of the standard model of the stored program computer, to the late work on emergence of form in nature, and the first approaches to understanding and simulating human intelligence. Turing's thinking was remarkably prescient, and his legacy still impacts on much of our work. The incomputable may turn out to be a specially important part of the legacy, with consequences that Alan Turing himself could not have envisaged.

Abstract:We consider graph Turing machines, a model of parallel computation on a graph, in which each vertex is only capable of performing one of a finite number of operations. This model of computation is a natural generalization of several well-studied notions of computation, including ordinary Turing machines, cellular automata, and parallel graph dynamical systems. We analyze the power of computations that can take place in this model, both in terms of the degrees of computability of the functions that can be computed, and the time and space resources needed to carry out these computations. We further show that properties of the underlying graph have significant consequences for the power of computation thereby obtained. In particular, we show that every arithmetically definable set can be computed by a graph Turing machine in constant time, and that every computably enumerable Turing degree can be computed in constant time and linear space by a graph Turing machine whose underlying graph has finite degree.

Abstract:We mathematically model the supertask, introduced by Hansen, in which an infinity of gods together select a random natural number by each randomly removing a finite number of balls from an urn, leaving one final ball. We show that this supertask is highly underdetermined, i.e. there are many scenarios consistent with the supertask. In particular we show that the notion of uniformity for finitely additive probability measures on the natural numbers emerging from this supertask is unreasonably weak.

Abstract:The overarching theme of the following pages is that mathematical logic -- centered around the incompleteness theorems -- is first and foremost an investigation of $\textit{computation}$, not arithmetic. Guided by this intuition we will show the following. * First, we'll all but eliminate the need for Gödel numbers. * Next, we'll introduce a novel notational device for representable functions and walk through a condensed demonstration that Peano Arithmetic can represent every computable function. It has achieved Turing completeness. * Continuing, we'll derive the Diagonal Lemma and First Incompleteness Theorem using significantly simplified proofs. * Approaching the Second Incompleteness Theorem, we'll be able to use some self-referential trickery to avoid much of the technical morass surrounding it; arriving at three separate versions. * Extending the analogy between the First Incompleteness Theorem and the Unsolvability of the Halting Problem produces an equivalent of the Nondeterministic Time Hierarchy Theorem from the field of computational complexity. * Lastly, we'll briefly peer into the realm of the uncomputable by connecting our ideas to oracles.

Abstract:Computer science theory provides many different measures of complexity of a system including Kolmogorov complexity, logical depth, computational depth, and Levin complexity. However, these measures are all defined only for deterministic Turing machines, i.e., deterministic dynamics of the underlying generative process whose output we are interested in. Therefore, by construction they cannot capture complexity of the output of stochastic processes - like those in the real world. Motivated by this observation, we combine probabilistic Turing machines with a prior over the inputs to the Turing machine to define a complete stochastic process of Turing machines. We call this a stochastic process Turing machine. Stochastic process Turing machines allow us to formalize a stochastic generalization of logical depth called stochastic depth, and also to apply stochastic thermodynamics to the analysis of Turing machines. Stochastic process Turing machines and stochastic depth allow us to study the complex, stochastic systems like the human brain, societies, and evolution all from within the framework of formal computation.

Abstract:Does combining a finite collection of objects infinitely many times guarantee the construction of a particular object? Here we use recursive function theory to examine the popular scenario of an infinite collection of typing monkeys reproducing the works of Shakespeare. Our main result is to show that it is possible to assign typing probabilities in such a way that while it is impossible that no monkey reproduces Shakespeare's works, the probability of any finite collection of monkeys doing so is arbitrarily small. We extend our results to target-free writing, and end with a broad discussion and pointers to future work.

We also show that the collection of such sets is Turing equivalent to the set of programs such that whenever the program converges it returns the code of a program with finite range.

Abstract:We study an abstract group of reversible Turing machines. In our model, each machine is interpreted as a homeomorphism over a space which represents a tape filled with symbols and a head carrying a state. These homeomorphisms can only modify the tape at a bounded distance around the head, change the state and move the head in a bounded way. We study three natural subgroups arising in this model: the group of finite-state automata, which generalizes the topological full groups studied in topological dynamics and the theory of orbit-equivalence; the group of oblivious Turing machines whose movement is independent of tape contents, which generalizes lamplighter groups and has connections to the study of universal reversible logical gates; and the group of elementary Turing machines, which are the machines which are obtained by composing finite-state automata and oblivious Turing machines. We show that both the group of oblivious Turing machines and that of elementary Turing machines are finitely generated, while the group of finite-state automata and the group of reversible Turing machines are not. We show that the group of elementary Turing machines has undecidable torsion problem. From this, we also obtain that the group of cellular automata (more generally, the automorphism group of any uncountable one-dimensional sofic subshift) contains a finitely-generated subgroup with undecidable torsion problem. We also show that the torsion problem is undecidable for the topological full group of a full $\mathbb{Z}^d$-shift on a non-trivial alphabet if and only if $d \geq 2$.

Abstract:Classical computations can not capture the essence of infinite computations very well. This paper will focus on a class of infinite computations called convergent infinite computations and establish a logical framework for describing and analyzing how an infinite computation interacts and evolves in changing environments and what the limit of the evolution might be. A logic for convergent infinite computations was proposed by extending first order theories using Cauchy sequences,which has stronger expression power than the first order logic. A computation model,called procedure scheme,for convergent infinite computations was proposed,on the basis of classical Turing machine and formal theory sequences and their limits. It has stronger computing power than Turing machines and real machines in the sense of limit computations. As an example of application of the above study,the limit behavior of data mining was discussed by means of limits of theory sequences.
