Abstract:This is Part A of four Parts dedicated to modular lattices of finite length. It builds on 1992 notes of the author (available on ResearchGate), and in so doing heeds a wish of the late Gian-Carlo Rota. Part A is in fairly final form and mainly features known material, exceptions being a short proof of the distributivity of congruence lattices of lattices, as well as the concept of a point-splitting (which applies to arbitrary partial linear spaces). The planned content of Parts B,C,D is given in the introduction of Part A. Suffice it to say that deep results from <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://C.Herrmann" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://R.Wille" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> will be treated in English for the first time. Abstract:We classify the dual strongly perfect lattices in dimension 16. There are four pairs of such lattices, the famous Barnes-Wall lattice $\Lambda _{16}$, the extremal 5-modular lattice $N_{16}$, the odd Barnes-Wall lattice $O_{16}$ and its dual, and one pair of new lattices $\Gamma _{16}$ and its dual. The latter pair belongs to a new infinite series of dual strongly perfect lattices, the sandwiched Barnes-Wall lattices, described by the authors in a previous paper. An updated table of all known strongly perfect lattices up to dimension 26 is available in the catalogue of lattices.

Abstract:For many equation-theoretical questions about modular lattices, Hall and Dilworth give a useful construction: Let $L_0$ be a lattice with largest element $u_0$, $L_1$ be a lattice disjoint from $L_0$ with smallest element $v_1$, and $a \in L_0$, $b \in L_1$ such that the intervals $[a, u_0]$ and $[v_1, b]$ are isomorphic. Then, after identifying those intervals you obtain $L_0 \cup L_1$, a lattice structure whose partial order is the transitive relation generated by the partial orders of $L_0$ and $L_1$. It is modular if $L_0$ and $L_1$ are modular. Since in this construction the index set $\{0, 1\}$ is essentially a chain, this work presents a method -- termed S-glued -- whereby a general family $L_x\ (x \in S)$ of lattices can specify a lattice with the small-scale lattice structure determined by the $L_x$ and the large-scale structure determined by $S$. A crucial application is representing finite-length modular lattices using projective geometries.

Abstract:In this article, we are interested in modular forms with non-vanishing central critical values and linear independence of Fourier coefficients of modular forms. The main ingredient is a generalization of a theorem due to VanderKam to modular symbols of higher weights. We prove that for sufficiently large primes p , Hecke operators act linearly independently on the winding elements inside the space of weight 2 k cuspidal modular symbol with for . This gives a bound on the number of newforms with non-vanishing arithmetic L -functions at their central critical points and linear independence on the reductions of these modular forms for prime modulo .

Shadowing of non-transversal heteroclinic chains in lattices

Abstract:We deal with dynamical systems on complex lattices possessing chains of non-transversal heteroclinic connections between several periodic orbits. The systems we consider are inspired by the so-called \emph{toy model systems} (TMS) used to prove the existence of energy transfer from low to high frequencies in the \emph{nonlinear cubic Schrödinger equation} (NLS) or generalizations. Using the geometric properties of the complex projective space as a base space, we generate in a natural way collections of such systems containing this type of chains, both in the Hamiltonian and in the non-Hamiltonian setting. On the other hand, we characterize the property of block diagonal dynamics along the heteroclinic connections that allows these chains to be shadowed, a property which in general only holds for transversal heteroclinic connections. Due to the lack of transversality, only finite chains are shadowed, since there is a dropping dimensions mechanism in the evolution of any disk close to them. The main shadowing technical tool used in our work is the notion of covering relations as introduced by one of the authors.

Abstract:We present tight upper and lower bounds for the traveling salesman path through the points of two-dimensional modular lattices. We use these results to bound the traveling salesman path of two-dimensional Kronecker point sets. Our results rely on earlier work on shortest vectors in lattices as well as on the strong convergence of Jacobi-Perron type algorithms.

Abstract:In 2011 Czédli and Schmidt proved the strongest form of Jordan-Hölder theorem for lattices, which they called Jordan-Hölder theorem with uniqueness: Given two maximal chains in a semimodular lattice of finite height, they both have the same length and there is a unique bijection that takes the prime intervals of the first chain to the prime intervals of the second chain such that the interval and its image are up-and-down projective. The theorem generalizes the classical result that all composition series of a finite group have the same length and isomorphic factors and shows that the isomorphism is in some sense unique. The paper presents a simplified proof of the result.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of lattices, the modernistic lattices, and their duals, the comodernistic lattices. We show that every modernistic or comodernistic lattice has shellable order complex. We go on to exhibit a large number of examples of (co)modernistic lattices. We show comodernism for two main families of lattices that were not previously known to be shellable: the order congruence lattices of finite posets, and a weighted generalization of the k-equal partition lattices. We also exhibit many examples of (co)modernistic lattices that were already known to be shellable. To start with, the definition of modernistic is a common weakening of the definitions of semimodular and supersolvable. We thus obtain a unified proof that lattice in these classes are shellable. Subgroup lattices of solvable groups form another family of comodernistic lattices that were already proved to be shellable. We show not only that subgroup lattices of solvable groups are comodernistic, but that solvability of a group is equivalent to the comodernistic property on its subgroup lattice. Indeed, the definition of comodernistic exactly requires on every interval a lattice-theoretic analogue of the composition series in a solvable group. Thus, the relation between comodernistic lattices and solvable groups resembles, in several respects, that between supersolvable lattices and supersolvable groups.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 1-18, March 2024. An integer matrix [math] is [math]-modular if the determinant of each [math] submatrix of [math] has absolute value at most [math]. The study of [math]-modular matrices appears in the theory of integer programming, where an open conjecture is whether integer programs defined by [math]-modular constraint matrices can be solved in polynomial time if [math] is considered constant. The conjecture is known to hold true only when [math]. In light of this conjecture, a natural question is to understand structural properties of [math]-modular matrices. We consider the column number question, how many nonzero, pairwise nonparallel columns can a rank-[math] [math]-modular matrix have? We prove that for each positive integer [math] and sufficiently large integer [math], every rank-[math] [math]-modular matrix has at most [math] nonzero, pairwise nonparallel columns, which is tight up to the term [math]. This is the first upper bound of the form [math] with [math] a polynomial function. Underlying our results is a partial list of matrices that cannot exist in a [math]-modular matrix. We believe this partial list may be of independent interest in future studies of [math]-modular matrices.

Simplifying modular lattices by removing doubly irreducible elements

Abstract:Lattices are simplified by removing some of their doubly irreducible elements, resulting in smaller lattices called racks. All vertically indecomposable modular racks of $n \le 40$ elements are listed, and the numbers of all modular lattices of $n \le 40$ elements are obtained by Pólya counting. SageMath code is provided that allows easy access both to the listed racks, and to the modular lattices that were not listed. More than 3000-fold savings in storage space are demonstrated.

Modular forms with poles on hyperplane arrangements

Abstract:We study algebras of meromorphic modular forms whose poles lie on Heegner divisors for orthogonal and unitary groups associated to root lattices. We give a uniform construction of $147$ hyperplane arrangements on type IV symmetric domains for which the algebras of modular forms with constrained poles are free and therefore the Looijenga compactifications of the arrangement complements are weighted projective spaces. We also construct $8$ free algebras of modular forms on complex balls with poles on hyperplane arrangements. The most striking example is the discriminant kernel of the $2U\oplus D_{11}$ lattice, which admits a free algebra on $14$ meromorphic generators. Along the way, we determine minimal systems of generators for non-free algebras of orthogonal modular forms for $26$ reducible root lattices and prove the modularity of formal Fourier--Jacobi series associated to them. By exploiting an identity between weight one singular additive and multiplicative lifts on $2U\oplus D_{11}$, we prove that the additive lift of any (possibly weak) theta block of positive weight and $q$-order one is a Borcherds product; the special case of holomorphic theta blocks of one elliptic variable is the theta block conjecture of Gritsenko, Poor and Yuen.

Towards Strong Reverse Minkowski-type Inequalities for Lattices

Abstract:We present a natural reverse Minkowski-type inequality for lattices, which gives upper bounds on the number of lattice points in a Euclidean ball in terms of sublattice determinants, and conjecture its optimal form. The conjecture exhibits a surprising wealth of connections to various areas in mathematics and computer science, including a conjecture motivated by integer programming by Kannan and Lovász (Annals of Math. 1988), a question from additive combinatorics asked by Green, a question on Brownian motions asked by Saloff-Coste (Colloq. Math. 2010), a theorem by Milman and Pisier from convex geometry (Ann. Probab. 1987), worst-case to average-case reductions in lattice-based cryptography, and more. We present these connections, provide evidence for the conjecture, and discuss possible approaches towards a proof. Our main technical contribution is in proving that our conjecture implies the $\ell_2$ case of the Kannan and Lovász conjecture. The proof relies on a novel convex relaxation for the covering radius, and a rounding procedure for based on "uncrossing" lattice subspaces.

Abstract:We introduce an associative algebra Z[X,S] associated to a birack shadow and define enhancements of the birack counting invariant for classical knots and links via representations of Z[X,S] known as shadow modules. We provide examples which demonstrate that the shadow module enhanced invariants are not determined by the Alexander polynomial or the unenhanced birack counting invariants.

Abstract:For a certain family of complete modular lattices, we prove a Jordan--Hölder--Scheier-like" theorem with no assumptions on cardinality or well-orderedness. This family includes both lattices which are both join- and meet-continuous, as well as the lattices of subobjects of any object in an abelian category satisfying properties related to Grothendieck's axioms (AB5) and (AB5*). We then give several examples of objects in abelian categories which satisfy these axioms, including pointwise finite-dimensional persistence modules, presheaves, and certain Prüfer modules. Moreover, we show that, over an arbitrary ring, the infinite product of isomorphic simple modules both fails to satisfy our axioms and admits at least two composition series with distinct cardinalities. We conclude by giving a lattice-theoretic proof that any object which is locally finitely generated and satisfies our axioms can be expressed as a direct sum of indecomposable subobjects. We conjecture that this decomposition is unique.

Transcendence of ${}_3F_2(1)$ Hypergeometric Series and $L$-values of Modular Forms

Abstract:We examine the families of hypergeometric series associated to a special class of modular hypergeometric Galois representations recently studied by Allen, Grove, Long, and Tu. The underlying motives allow us to express a special $L$-value of the corresponding modular form in terms of these hypergeometric series. We use extra symmetries coming from the underlying modular forms to study the transcendence of families of periods, which have the form ${}_3F_2(1)$, on hypergeometric surfaces. For several hypergeometric surfaces with four periods, we show that the vector space generated by these elements has dimension at most 2. As an application of our results, we utilize a classical formula of ${}_3F_2(1)$ series due to Kummer to find relations between $L$-values of modular forms that differ by an even twist, as predicted in a theorem of Shimura.

Abstract:A lattice $\Lambda$ is said to be an extension of a sublattice $L$ of smaller rank if $L$ is equal to the intersection of $\Lambda$ with the subspace spanned by $L$. The goal of this paper is to initiate a systematic study of the geometry of lattice extensions. We start by proving the existence of a small-determinant extension of a given lattice, and then look at successive minima and covering radius. To this end, we investigate extensions (within an ambient lattice) preserving the successive minima of the given lattice, as well as extensions preserving the covering radius. We also exhibit some interesting arithmetic properties of deep holes of planar lattices.

Let $\Pi_1$ and $\Pi_2$ be cuspidal automorphic representations of ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{A}_k)$ for some integer $n\geq1$. In this paper, we study the following question: assuming that there is a finite set $S$ of places of $k$ containing all Archimedean places and all finite places above $\ell$ such that, for all $v\notin S$, the local components $\Pi_{1,v} \otimes_{\mathbb{C}} \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$ and $\Pi_{2,v} \otimes_{\mathbb{C}} \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$ are unramified and their Satake parameters are congruent mod $\ell$, are the local components $\Pi_{1,w} \otimes_{\mathbb{C}} \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$ and $\Pi_{2,w} \otimes_{\mathbb{C}} \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$ integral, and do their reductions mod $\ell$ share an irreducible factor for all non-Archimedean places $w$ not dividing $\ell$? We show that, under certain conditions on $\Pi_1$ and $\Pi_2$, the answer is yes. We also give a simple proof when $k$ is a function field.
