Abstract:Over the last 70 years, Feynman diagrams have played an essential role in the development of many theoretical predictions derived from the standard model Lagrangian. In fact, today they have become an essential and seemingly irreplaceable tool in quantum field theory calculations. In this article, we propose to explore the development of computational methods for Feynman diagrams with a special focus on their automation, drawing insights from both theoretical physics and the history of science. From the latter perspective, the article particularly investigates the emergence of computer algebraic programs, such as the pioneering SCHOONSCHIP , REDUCE , and ASHMEDAI , designed to handle the intricate calculations associated with Feynman diagrams. This sheds light on the many challenges faced by physicists when working at higher orders in perturbation theory and reveal, as exemplified by the test of the validity of quantum electrodynamics at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, the indispensable necessity of computer-assisted procedures. In the second part of the article, a comprehensive overview of the current state of the algorithmic evaluation of Feynman diagrams is presented from a theoretical point of view. It emphasizes the key algorithmic concepts employed in modern perturbative quantum field theory computations and discusses the achievements, ongoing challenges, and potential limitations encountered in the application of the Feynman diagrammatic method. Accordingly, we attribute the enduring significance of Feynman diagrams in contemporary physics to two main factors: the highly algorithmic framework developed by physicists to tackle these diagrams and the successful advancement of algebraic programs used to process the involved calculations associated with them.

Abstract:Feynman diagrams represent one of the most powerful and fascinating tools developed in theoretical physics in the last century. Introduced within the framework of quantum electrodynamics as a suitable method for computing the amplitude of a physical process, they rapidly became a fundamental mathematical object in quantum field theory. However, their abstract nature seems to suggest a wider usage, which actually exceeds the physical context. Indeed, as mathematical objects, they could simply be considered graphs that depict not only physical quantities but also biological or economic entities. We survey the analytical and algebraic properties of such diagrams to understand their utility in several areas of science, eventually providing some examples of recent applications.

Abstract:We propose a computational graph representation of high-order Feynman diagrams in Quantum Field Theory (QFT), applicable to any combination of spatial, temporal, momentum, and frequency domains. Utilizing the Dyson-Schwinger and parquet equations, our approach effectively organizes these diagrams into a fractal structure of tensor operations, significantly reducing computational redundancy. This approach not only streamlines the evaluation of complex diagrams but also facilitates an efficient implementation of the field-theoretic renormalization scheme, crucial for enhancing perturbative QFT calculations. Key to this advancement is the integration of Taylor-mode automatic differentiation, a key technique employed in machine learning packages to compute higher-order derivatives efficiently on computational graphs. To operationalize these concepts, we develop a Feynman diagram compiler that optimizes diagrams for various computational platforms, utilizing machine learning frameworks. Demonstrating this methodology's effectiveness, we apply it to the three-dimensional uniform electron gas problem, achieving unprecedented accuracy in calculating the quasiparticle effective mass at metal density. Our work demonstrates the synergy between QFT and machine learning, establishing a new avenue for applying AI techniques to complex quantum many-body problems.

Abstract:We develop an operator approach to the evaluation of multiple integrals for multiloop Feynman massless diagrams. A commutative family of graph building operators $H_\alpha$ for ladder diagrams is constructed and investigated. The complete set of eigenfunctions and the corresponding eigenvalues for the operators $H_\alpha$ are found. This enables us to explicitly express a wide class of four-point ladder diagrams and a general two-loop propagator-type master diagram (with arbitrary indices on the lines) as Mellin-Barnes-type integrals. Special cases of these integrals are explicitly evaluated. A certain class of zig-zag four-point and two-point planar Feynman diagrams (relevant to the bi-scalar $D$-dimensional "fishnet" field theory and to the calculation of the $\beta$-function in $\phi^4$-theory) is considered. The graph building operators and convenient integral representations for these Feynman diagrams are obtained. The explicit form of the eigenfunctions for the graph building operators of the zig-zag diagrams is fixed by conformal symmetry and these eigenfunctions coincide with the 3-point correlation functions in $D$-dimensional conformal field theories. By means of this approach, we exactly evaluate the diagrams of the zig-zag series in special cases. In particular, we find a fairly simple derivation of the values for the zig-zag multi-loop two-point diagrams for $D=4$. The role of conformal symmetry in this approach, especially a connection of the considered graph building operators with conformal invariant solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation is investigated in detail.

Global sampling of Feynman's diagrams through Normalizing Flow

Abstract:Normalizing Flows (NF) are powerful generative models with increasing applications in augmenting Monte Carlo algorithms due to their high flexibility and expressiveness. In this work we explore the integration of NF in Diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DMC), presenting an architecture designed to sample the intricate multidimensional space of Feynman's diagrams through dimensionality reduction. By decoupling the sampling of diagram order and interaction times, the flow focuses on one interaction at a time. This enables constructing a general diagram by employing the same unsupervised model iteratively, dressing a zero-order diagram with interactions determined by the previously sampled order. The resulting NF-augmented DMC is tested on the widely used single-site Holstein polaron model in the entire electron-phonon coupling regime. The obtained data show that the model accurately reproduces the diagram distribution reducing sample correlation and statistical error for observables such as the polaron binding energy and the interacting Green's function.

Abstract:Evaluation of a wide variety of Feynman diagrams with multi-loop integrals and physical parameters and its comparison with high energy experiments are expected to investigate new physics beyond the Standard Model. We have been developing a direct computation method of multi-loop integrals of Feynman diagrams. One of features of our method is that we adopt the double exponential rule for numerical integrations which enables us to evaluate loop integrals with boundary singularities. Another feature is that in order to accelerate the numerical integrations with multi-precision calculations, we develop an accelerator system with Field Programmable Gate Array boards on which processing elements with dedicated logic for quadruple/hexuple/octuple precision arithmetic operations are implemented. In addition, we also develop a programming interface designed for easy use of the system. The development is continued for practical use of the system. We present the current development of our system, and the numerical results of higher-loop diagrams performed using our system.

Abstract:We give a short introduction to Feynman diagrams, with many exercises. Text is targeted at students who had little or no prior exposure to quantum field theory. We present condensed description of single-particle Dirac equation, free quantum fields and construction of Feynman amplitude using Feynman diagrams. As an example, we give a detailed calculation of cross-section for annihilation of electron and positron into a muon pair. We also show how such calculations are done with the aid of computer.

Feynman diagrammatics based on discrete pole representations: A path to renormalized perturbation theories

Abstract:By merging algorithmic Matsubara integration with discrete pole representations we present a procedure to generate fully analytic closed form results for impurity problems at fixed perturbation order. To demonstrate the utility of this approach we study the Bethe lattice and evaluate the second order self-energy for which reliable benchmarks exist. We show that, when evaluating diagrams on the Matsubara axis, the analytic sums of pole representations are extremely precise. We point out the absence of a numerical sign problem in the evaluation, and explore the application of the same procedure for real-frequency evaluation of diagrams. We find that real-frequency results are subject to noise that is controlled at low temperatures and can be mitigated at additional computational expense. We further demonstrate the utility of this approach by evaluating dynamical mean-field and bold diagrammatic self-consistency schemes at both second and fourth order and compare to benchmarks where available.

Abstract:We briefly introduce new multiloop capabilities of the Mathematica package FeynCalc 10 and a collection of interfaces connecting FeynCalc to such popular tools as QGRAF, Fiesta, pySecDec, LoopTools, KIRA, FIRE or Fermat. In addition to that, we showcase the application of these codes to the ongoing study of the soft-overlap contribution to $B_c \to \eta_c$ transition form factors at large hadronic recoil.

Abstract:FeynRules is a Mathematica-based package which addresses the implementation of particle physics models, which are given in the form of a list of fields, parameters and a Lagrangian, into high-energy physics tools. It calculates the underlying Feynman rules and outputs them to a form appropriate for various programs such as CalcHEP, FeynArts, MadGraph, Sherpa and Whizard. Since the original version, many new features have been added: support for two-component fermions, spin-3/2 and spin-2 fields, superspace notation and calculations, automatic mass diagonalization, completely general FeynArts output, a new universal FeynRules output interface, a new Whizard interface, automatic 1 to 2 decay width calculation, improved speed and efficiency, new guidelines for validation and a new web-based validation package. With this feature set, FeynRules enables models to go from theory to simulation and comparison with experiment quickly, efficiently and accurately.

Abstract:In a recent paper \cite{ft} a new powerful method to calculate Feynman diagrams was proposed. It consists in setting up a Taylor series expansion in the external momenta squared. The Taylor coefficients are obtained from the original diagram by differentiation and putting the external momenta equal to zero. It was demonstrated that by a certain conformal mapping and subsequent resummation by means of Padé approximants it is possible to obtain high precision numerical values of the Feynman integrals in the whole cut plane. The real problem in this approach is the calculation of the Taylor coefficients for the arbitrary mass case. Since their analytic evaluation by means of CA packages uses enormous CPU and yields very lengthy expressions, we develop an algorithm with the aim to set up a FORTRAN package for their numerical evaluation. This development is guided by the possibilities offered by the formulae manipulating language FORM \cite{FORM}.

Abstract:In this work we report on a new version of FeynCalc, a Mathematica package widely used in the particle physics community for manipulating quantum field theoretical expressions and calculating Feynman diagrams. Highlights of the new version include greatly improved capabilities for doing multiloop calculations, including topology identification and minimization, optimized tensor reduction, rewriting of scalar products in terms of inverse denominators, detection of equivalent or scaleless loop integrals, derivation of Symanzik polynomials, Feynman parametric as well as graph representation for master integrals and initial support for handling differential equations and iterated integrals. In addition to that, the new release also features completely rewritten routines for color algebra simplifications, inclusion of symmetry relations between arguments of Passarino--Veltman functions, tools for determining matching coefficients and quantifying the agreement between numerical results, improved export to LaTeX and first steps towards a better support of calculations involving light-cone vectors.

Decomposing imaginary time Feynman diagrams using separable basis functions: Anderson impurity model strong coupling expansion

Abstract:We present a deterministic algorithm for the efficient evaluation of imaginary time diagrams based on the recently introduced discrete Lehmann representation (DLR) of imaginary time Green's functions. In addition to the efficient discretization of diagrammatic integrals afforded by its approximation properties, the DLR basis is separable in imaginary time, allowing us to decompose diagrams into linear combinations of nested sequences of one-dimensional products and convolutions. Focusing on the strong coupling bold-line expansion of generalized Anderson impurity models, we show that our strategy reduces the computational complexity of evaluating an $M$th-order diagram at inverse temperature $\beta$ and spectral width $\omega_{\max}$ from $\mathcal{O}((\beta \omega_{\max})^{2M-1})$ for a direct quadrature to $\mathcal{O}(M (\log (\beta \omega_{\max}))^{M+1})$, with controllable high-order accuracy. We benchmark our algorithm using third-order expansions for multi-band impurity problems with off-diagonal hybridization and spin-orbit coupling, presenting comparisons with exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo approaches. In particular, we perform a self-consistent dynamical mean-field theory calculation for a three-band Hubbard model with strong spin-orbit coupling representing a minimal model of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, demonstrating the promise of the method for modeling realistic strongly correlated multi-band materials. For both strong and weak coupling expansions of low and intermediate order, in which diagrams can be enumerated, our method provides an efficient, straightforward, and robust black-box evaluation procedure. In this sense, it fills a gap between diagrammatic approximations of the lowest order, which are simple and inexpensive but inaccurate, and those based on Monte Carlo sampling of high-order diagrams.

Abstract:We give a mathematically precise review of a diagrammatic language introduced by Friedrichs in order to simplify computations with creation and annihilation operator products. In that language, we establish explicit formulas and algorithms for evaluating bosonic and fermionic commutators. Further, as an application, we demonstrate that the non-linear Hartree dynamics can be seen as a subset of the diagrams arising in the time evolution of a Bose gas.

Abstract:A new kind of cut diagram is introduced to sum Feynman diagrams with nonabelian vertices. Unlike the Cutkosky diagrams which compute the discontinuity of single Feynman diagrams, the nonabelian cut diagrams represent a resummation of both the real and the imaginary parts of Feynman diagrams related by permutations. Several applications of the technique are reported, including a resolution of the apparent inconsistency of the baryon problem in large-$N_c$ QCD, a simplified calculation of high-energy low-order QCD diagrams, and progress made with this technique on the unitarization of the BFKL equation.

Abstract:The near threshold expansion of Feynman diagrams is derived from their configuration space representation, by performing all x integrations. The general scalar Feynman diagram is considered, with an arbitrary number of external momenta, an arbitrary number of internal lines and an arbitrary number of loops, in n dimensions and all masses may be different. The expansions are considered both below and above threshold. Rules, giving real and imaginary part, are derived. Unitarity of a sunset diagram with I internal lines is checked in a direct way by showing that its imaginary part is equal to the phase space integral of I particles.

Abstract:The program FEYNRULES is a MATHEMATICA package developed to facilitate the implementation of new physics theories into high-energy physics tools. Starting from a minimal set of information such as the model gauge symmetries, its particle content, parameters and Lagrangian, FEYNRULES provides all necessary routines to extract automatically from the Lagrangian (that can also be computed semi-automatically for supersymmetric theories) the associated Feynman rules. These can be further exported to several Monte Carlo event generators through dedicated interfaces, as well as translated into a PYTHON library, under the so-called UFO model format, agnostic of the model complexity, especially in terms of Lorentz and/or color structures appearing in the vertices or of number of external legs. In this work, we briefly report on the most recent new features that have been added to FEYNRULES, including full support for spin-1 fermions, a new module allowing for the automated diagonalization of the particle spectrum and a new set of routines dedicated to decay width calculations.
