Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{Dol}}(X,G)$ denote the hyperkähler moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles over a smooth projective curve $X$. In the context of four dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, Kapustin and Witten introduced the notion of (BBB)-brane: boundary conditions that are compatible with the B-model twist in every complex structure of $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{Dol}}(X,G)$. The geometry of such branes was initially proposed to be hyperkähler submanifolds that support a hyperholomorphic bundle. Gaiotto has suggested a more general type of (BBB)-brane defined by perfect analytic complexes on the Deligne-Hitchin twistor space $\mathrm{Tw}(\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{Dol}}(X,G))$. Following Gaiotto's suggestion, this paper proposes a framework for the categorification of (BBB)-branes, both on the moduli spaces and on the corresponding derived moduli stacks. We do so by introducing the Deligne stack, a derived analytic stack with corresponding moduli space $\mathrm{Tw}(\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{Dol}}(X,G))$, defined as a gluing between two analytic Hodge stacks along the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence. We then construct a class of (BBB)-branes using integral functors that arise from higher non-abelian Hodge theory, before discussing their relation to the Wilson functors from the Dolbeault geometric Langlands correspondence.

D-branes and Azumaya/matrix noncommutative differential geometry, I: D-branes as fundamental objects in string theory and differentiable maps from Azumaya/matrix manifolds with a fundamental module to real manifolds

Abstract: We consider D-branes in string theory and address the issue of how to describe them mathematically as a fundamental object (as opposed to a solitonic object) of string theory in the realm in differential and symplectic geometry. The notion of continuous maps, $k$-times differentiable maps, and smooth maps from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a (commutative) real manifold $Y$ is developed. Such maps are meant to describe D-branes or matrix branes in string theory when these branes are light and soft with only small enough or even zero brane-tension. When $Y$ is a symplectic manifold (resp. a Calabi-Yau manifold; a $7$-manifold with $G_2$-holonomy; a manifold with an almost complex structure $J$), the corresponding notion of Lagrangian maps (resp. special Lagrangian maps; associative maps, coassociative maps; $J$-holomorphic maps) are introduced. Indicative examples linking to symplectic geometry and string theory are given. This provides us with a language and part of the foundation required to study themes, new or old, in symplectic geometry and string theory, including (1) $J$-holomorphic D-curves (with or without boundary), (2) quantization and dynamics of D-branes in string theory, (3) a definition of Fukaya category guided by Lagrangian maps from Azumaya manifolds with a fundamental module with a connection, (4) a theory of fundamental matrix strings or D-strings, and (5) the nature of Ramond-Ramond fields in a space-time. The current note D(11.1) is the symplectic/differential-geometric counterpart of the more algebraic-geometry-oriented first two notes D(1) ([L-Y1]) (arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG]) and D(2) ([L-L-S-Y], with Si Li and Ruifang Song) (arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG]) in this project.

Abstract:I describe extended gradings of open topological field theories in two dimensions in terms of skew categories, proving a result which alows one to translate between the formalism of graded open 2d TFTs and equivariant cyclic categories. As an application of this formalism, I describe the open 2d TFT of graded D-branes in Landau-Ginzburg models in terms of an equivariant cyclic structure on the triangulated category of `graded matrix factorizations' introduced by Orlov. This leads to a specific conjecture for the Serre functor on the latter, which generalizes results known from the minimal and Calabi-Yau cases. I also give a description of the open 2d TFT of such models which manifestly displays the full grading induced by the vector-axial R-symmetry group.

B-brane Transport and Grade Restriction Rule for Determinantal Varieties

Abstract:We study autoequivalences of $D^{b}Coh(X)$ associated to B-brane transport around loops in the stringy Kähler moduli of $X$. We consider the case of $X$ being certain resolutions of determinantal varieties embedded in $\mathbb{P}^{d}\times G(k,n)$. Such resolutions have been modeled, in general, by nonabelian gauged linear sigma models (GLSM). We use the GLSM construction to determine the window categories associated with B-brane transport between different geometric phases using the machinery of grade restriction rule and the hemisphere partition function. In the family of examples analyzed the monodromies around phase boundaries enjoy the interpretation as loop inside link complements. We exploit this interpretation to find a decomposition of autoequivalences into simpler spherical functors and we illustrate this in two examples of Calabi-Yau 3-folds $X$, modeled by an abelian and nonabelian GLSM respectively. In additon we also determine explicitly the action of the autoequivalences on the Grothendieck group $K(X)$ (or equivalently, B-brane charges).

Abstract:We consider the bulk algebra and topological D-brane category arising from the differential model of the open-closed B-type topological Landau-Ginzburg theory defined by a pair $(X,W)$, where $X$ is a non-compact Calabi-Yau manifold and $W$ has compact critical set. When $X$ is a Stein manifold (but not restricted to be a domain of holomorphy), we extract equivalent descriptions of the bulk algebra and of the category of topological D-branes which are constructed using only the analytic space associated to $X$. In particular, we show that the D-brane category is described by projective matrix factorizations defined over the ring of holomorphic functions of $X$. We also discuss simplifications of the analytic models which arise when $X$ is holomorphically parallelizable and illustrate these analytic models in a few classes of examples.

Abstract: We review first Azumaya geometry and D-branes in the realm of algebraic geometry along the line of Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz from our earlier work and then use it as background to introduce Azumaya $C^{\infty}$-manifolds with a fundamental module and morphisms therefrom to a projective complex manifold. This gives us a description of D-branes of A-type. Donaldson's picture of Lagrangian and special Lagrangian submanifolds as selected from the zero-locus of a moment map on a related space of maps can be merged into the setting. As a pedagogical toy model, we study D-branes of A-type in a Calabi-Yau torus. Simple as it is, it reveals several features of D-branes, including their assembling/disassembling. The 4th theme of Sec. 2.4, the 2nd theme of Sec. 4.2, and Sec. 4.3 are to be read respectively with G\'omez-Sharpe (arXiv:hep-th/0008150), Donagi-Katz-Sharpe (arXiv:hep-th/0309270), and Denef (arXiv:hep-th/0107152). Some string-theoretical remarks are given at the end of each section.
Graded decorated marked surfaces: Calabi-Yau-$\mathbb{X}$ categories of gentle algebras

Abstract: Let $\mathbf{S}$ a graded marked surface. We construct a string model for Calabi-Yau-$\mathbb{X}$ category $\mathcal{D}_\mathbb{X}(\mathbf{S}_\Delta)$, via graded decorated marked surfaces $\mathbf{S}_\Delta$. We prove the isomorphism between the braid twist group of the surface and the spherical twist group of the category, and $q$-intersection formulas for $\mathcal{D}_\mathbb{X}(\mathbf{S}_\Delta)$. We also give a topological realization of the Lagrangian immersion $\mathcal{D}_\infty(\mathbf{S})\to\mathcal{D}_\mathbb{X}(\mathbf{S}_\Delta)$, where $\mathcal{D}_\infty(\mathbf{S})$ is the topological Fukaya category associated to $\mathbf{S}$. This generalizes previous work in the Calabi-Yau-3 case and also unifies the usual case (Calabi-Yau-$\infty$ case, i.e. for $\mathcal{D}_\infty(\mathbf{S})$).
An Introduction to Deligne Categories

Abstract:This work hopes to be an introduction to Deligne categories for someone familiar with classical representation theory and some category theory. In the first chapter, we motivate and define (symmetric) tensor categories, construct the Deligne categories, and prove their universal properties. In the second chapter, we define ultraproducts and use them to construct the Deligne categories in a different way; in particular, this construction works in positive characteristic. In the third chapter, we connect Deligne categories to the classical categories by discussing simple objects and explaining what happens in the $t = n$ case. In the last chapter, along with recommendations for further and related reading, we give an example of an investigation of Harish-Chandra bimodules in representation theory in complex rank, which is a joint work with Alexandra Utiralova (

Abstract:We introduce new techniques based on brane tilings to investigate D3-branes probing orientifolds of toric Calabi-Yau singularities. With these new tools, one can write down many orientifold models and derive the resulting low-energy gauge theories living on the D-branes. Using the set of ideas in this paper one recovers essentially all orientifolded theories known so far. Furthermore, new orientifolds of non-orbifold toric singularities are obtained. The possible applications of the tools presented in this paper are diverse. One particular application is the construction of models which feature dynamical supersymmetry breaking as well as the computation of D-instanton induced superpotential terms.

Abstract:In [L-Y5] (D(6): arXiv:1003.1178 [math.SG]) we introduced the notion of Azumaya $C^{\infty}$-manifolds with a fundamental module and morphisms therefrom to a complex manifold. In the current sequel, we use this notion to give a prototypical definition of supersymmetric D-branes of A-type (i.e. A-branes) -- in an appropriate region of the Wilson's theory-space of string theory -- as special Lagrangian morphisms from such objects with a unitary, minimally flat connection-with-singularities. This merges Donaldson's picture of special Lagrangian submanifolds and the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz for D-branes on a Calabi-Yau space. Basic phenomena of D-branes such as Higgsing/un-Higgsing and large- vs. small-brane wrapping can be realized via deformations of such morphisms. Classical results of Alexander, Hilden, Lozano, Montesinos, and Thurston suggest then a genus-like expansion of the path-integral of D3-branes. Similarly for D2-branes and M2-branes. In the last section, we use the technical results of Joyce on desingularizations of special Lagrangian submanifolds with conical singularities to explain how A-branes thus defined can be driven and re-assemble under a split attractor flow, as studied in an earlier work of Denef. Abstract:Following is a collection of lecture notes on D-branes, which may be used by the reader as preparation for applications to modern research applications such as: the AdS/CFT and other gauge theory/geometry correspondences, Matrix Theory and stringy non-commutative geometry, etc. In attempting to be reasonably self-contained, the notes start from classical point-particles and develop the subject logically (but selectively) through classical strings, quantisation, D-branes, supergravity, superstrings, string duality, including many detailed applications. Selected focus topics feature D-branes as probes of both spacetime and gauge geometry, highlighting the role of world-volume curvature and gauge couplings, with some non-Abelian cases. Other advanced topics which are discussed are the (presently) novel tools of research such as fractional branes, the enhancon mechanism, D(ielectric)-branes and the emergence of the fuzzy/non-commutative sphere.

Derived Braids of Decreasing Products and their Categories

Abstract:Derived braids have been used to classify categorical structures based on the braid underlying a braided monoidal category V. With four-strand braids underlying the composition morphisms of tensor products of categories enriched over V, equality of derived braids has been seen to correspond with the results of Joyal and Street on coherence for braided monoidal categories, namely that diagrams commute when the braids underlying the legs of the diagram are equal. Equality of derived braids can then be seen as a generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation that appears in the work of Joyal and Street. The main result is a proof that decreasing products, which are braids formed from component braids with even numbers of strands, have equivalent derived braids. Plans for future work include interpreting what categorical structures correspond to decreasing products.

Abstract:We present a bicategorical perspective on derived Morita theory for rings, DG algebras, and spectra. This perspective draws a connection between Morita theory and the bicategorical Yoneda Lemma, yielding a conceptual unification of Morita theory in derived and bicategorical contexts. This is motivated by study of Rickard's theorem for derived equivalences of rings and of Morita theory for ring spectra, which we present in Sections 2 and 4. Along the way, we gain an understanding of the barriers to Morita theory for DG algebras and give a conceptual explanation for the counterexample of Dugger and Shipley.
Stable D-branes, calibrations and generalized Calabi-Yau geometry

Abstract:We introduce generalized calibrations that take into account the gauge field on the D-brane so that calibrated submanifolds minimize the Dirac-Born-Infeld energy. We establish the calibration bound and show that the calibration form is closed in a supersymmetric background with non-vanishing NS-NS 3-form H and dilaton. We show that the calibration conditions are equivalent to the existence of unbroken supersymmetry on the D-brane. We study the problem of supersymmetric D-branes in the presence of non-vanishing H also from the world-sheet approach and find exactly the same conditions. Finally, we show that our notion of generalized calibrations is equivalent to the calibrations introduced in the context of generalized Calabi-Yau geometry in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.DG/0401221" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.DG/0401221">math.DG/0401221</a>.

Abstract:We explain how Polchinski's work on D-branes re-read from a noncommutative version of Grothendieck's equivalence of local geometries and function rings gives rise to an intrinsic prototype definition of D-branes (of B-type) as an Azumaya-type noncommutative space. Several originally open-string induced properties of D-branes can be reproduced solely by this intrinsic definition. We study also the moduli space of D0-branes on a commutative target space in this setup. Some of its features resembles gas of D0-branes in Vafa's work.
Duality in Monoidal Categories

Abstract:We compare closed and rigid monoidal categories. Closedness is defined by the tensor product having a right adjoint: the internal-hom functor. Rigidity, on the other hand, generalises the duality of finite-dimensional vector spaces. In the latter, the internal-hom functor is implemented by tensoring with the respective duals. This raises the question: can one decide whether a closed monoidal category is rigid, simply by verifying that the internal-hom is tensor-representable? We provide a counterexample in terms of finitely-generated projective objects in an abelian k-linear category. A byproduct of our work is that we obtain characterisations of the Grothendieck--Verdier duality, also called *-autonomy, and rigidity of functor categories endowed with Day convolution as their tensor product. Applied to Mackey functors, this yields a proof of a sketched argument by Bouc linking rigidity of an object to it being finitely-generated projective.
