Abstract:The energy extraction from an electrostatic black hole by the decay or splitting of electrically charged particles is analyzed. We determine the energetic conditions that make the extraction process viable and present a general expression for the efficiency in terms of the parameters of the electrostatic black hole and the decaying particles. We also examine the conditions that optimize the efficiency of the extraction process. We analyze two particular cases, the first one is the extraction process from a Reissner Nordström black hole, for charged test particles with nonvanishing angular momentum; the second one and more interesting corresponds to the energy extraction from a Reissner Nordström de Sitter black hole. For the latter there are two regions where the energy extraction is possible, the generalized ergosphere and a cosmological ergosphere induced by the cosmological horizon. Under certain conditions the two ergospheres get connected and cover the whole region between the event horizon and the cosmological horizon, and therefore the energy extraction is possible at any point in the vicinity of the black hole. Moreover, the efficiency of the energy extraction can be the same for different break up points and also there is the possibility of a different efficiency for the same break up point. The conditions that maximize the efficiency are determined as well.

The role of the irreducible mass in repetitive Penrose energy extraction processes in a Kerr black hole

Abstract:The concept of the irreducible mass ($M_{\rm irr}$) has led to the mass-energy ($M$) formula of a Kerr black hole (BH), in turn leading to its surface area $S=16\pi M_{\rm irr}^2$. This also allowed the coeval identification of the reversible and irreversible transformations, soon followed by the concepts of "extracted" and "extractable" energy. This new conceptual framework avoids inconsistencies recently evidenced in a repetitive Penrose process. We consider repetitive decays in the ergosphere of an initially extreme Kerr BH and show the processes are highly irreversible. For each decay, the particle that the BH captures causes an increase of the irreducible mass (so the BH horizon), much larger than the extracted energy. The energy extraction process stops {when the BH reaches a positive spin lower limit set by the process boundary conditions}. Thus, the reaching of a final non-rotating Schwarzschild BH state through this accretion process is impossible. We have assessed such processes for selected decay radii and incoming particle with rest mass $1\%$ of the BH initial mass $M_0$. For $r= 1.2 M$ and $1.9 M$, the sequence stops after $8$ and $34$ decays, respectively, at a spin $0.991$ and $0.857$, the energy extracted has been only $1.16\%$, and $0.42\%$, the extractable energy is reduced by $17\%$ and $56\%$, and the irreducible mass increases by $5\%$ and $22\%$, all values in units of $M_0$. These results show the highly nonlinear change of the BH parameters, dictated by the BH mass-energy formula, and that the BH rotational energy is mainly converted into irreducible mass. Thus, evaluating the irreducible mass increase in any energy extraction processes in the Kerr BH ergosphere is mandatory.

Abstract:With the Komar mass formula we calculate the electromagnetic energy for a charged Kerr black hole in a uniform magnetic field. We find that the total electromagnetic energy takes the minimum when the Kerr black hole possesses a nonzero net charge $Q=2\ensuremath{\xi}{B}_{0}{J}_{H}$ where ${B}_{0}$ is the strength of the magnetic field, ${J}_{H}$ is the angular momentum of the black hole, and $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is a dimensionless parameter determined by the spin of the black hole. However, the Wald state with ${Q=2B}_{0}{J}_{H}$ does not minimize the electromagnetic energy.

Abstract:We analyze the extraction of the rotational energy of a Kerr black hole (BH) endowed with a test charge and surrounded by an external test magnetic field and ionized low-density matter. For a magnetic field parallel to the BH spin, electrons move outward (inward) and protons inward (outward) in a region around the BH poles (equator). For zero charge, the polar region comprises spherical polar angles $-60^\circ\lesssim \theta \lesssim 60^\circ$ and the equatorial region $60^\circ\lesssim \theta \lesssim 120^\circ$. The polar region shrinks for positive charge, and the equatorial region enlarges. For an isotropic particle density, we argue the BH could experience a cyclic behavior: starting from a zero charge, it accretes more polar protons than equatorial electrons, gaining net positive charge, energy, and angular momentum. Then, the shrinking(enlarging) of the polar(equatorial) region makes it accrete more equatorial electrons than polar protons, gaining net negative charge, energy, and angular momentum. In this phase, the BH rotational energy is extracted. The extraction process continues until the new enlargement of the polar region reverses the situation, and the cycle repeats. We show that this electrodynamical process produces a relatively limited increase of the BH irreducible mass compared to gravitational mechanisms like the Penrose process, hence being a more efficient and promising mechanism for extracting the BH rotational energy.

Extracting the energy and angular momentum of a Kerr black hole

Abstract:It has been thought for decades that rotating black holes (BHs) power the energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs), but the mechanism that extracts the BH energy has remained elusive. We here show that the solution to this problem arises when the BH is immersed in an external magnetic field and ionized low-density matter. For a magnetic field parallel to the BH spin, the induced electric field accelerates electrons outward and protons inward in a conical region, centered on the BH rotation axis, and of semi-aperture angle $\theta \approx 60^\circ$ from the BH rotation axis. For an antiparallel magnetic field, protons and electrons exchange their roles. The particles that are accelerated outward radiate off energy and angular momentum to infinity. The BH powers the process by reducing its energy and angular momentum by capturing polar protons and equatorial electrons with net negative energy and angular momentum. The electric potential allows for negative energy states outside the BH ergosphere, so the latter does not play any role in this electrodynamical BH energy extraction process.

Floating orbits and energy extraction from magnetized Kerr black holes

Abstract:We study electromagnetic radiation reaction on a charged particle around a weakly magnetized Kerr black hole. We solve numerically the Teukolsky equation to find energy fluxes in electromagnetic radiation at the horizon and at spatial infinity. We also employ analytical methods in the low-frequency limit, finding excellent agreement with the numerical results. For a wide range of parameters, energy fluxes on the horizon are negative for all orbital radii: the modes are amplified through superradiance. More interestingly, the flux on the horizon is larger (in absolute value) than the flux at infinity for orbits with orbital radius $r_0 \gtrsim 9M$ -- floating orbits are a generic outcome of having magnetic fields around black holes. Particles on these orbits extract energy from the BH through their radiation field; the net effect is an increase in the particles' kinetic energy, so that they outspiral to infinity. Although in realistic accretion disks viscous forces are expected to dominate, floating orbits remain an interesting feature of the existence of ergoregions in black hole spacetimes.

Abstract:The Penrose process, a process that transfers energy from a black hole to infinity, together with the BSW mechanism, which uses collisions of ingoing particles at the event horizon of a black hole to locally produce large amounts of energy, is studied in a combined description for a $d$ dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime with negative, zero, or positive cosmological constant, i.e., for an asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS), flat, or de Sitter (dS) spacetime. In an extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole background, in the vicinity of the horizon, several types of radial collisions between electrically charged particles can be considered. The most interesting one is between a critical particle, with its electric charge adjusted in a specific way, and a usual particle, as it gives a divergent center of mass frame energy locally, this being a favorable but not sufficient condition to extract energy from the black hole. To understand whether energy can be extracted in such a collisional Penrose process, we investigate in detail a collision between ingoing particles 1 and 2, from which particles 3 and 4 emerge, with the possibility that particle 3 can carry energy far out from the black hole horizon. One finds that the mass, energy, electric charge, and initial direction of motion of particle 3 can have different values, depending on the collision internal process, but these values lie within some range. Moreover, the energy of particle 3 can be arbitrarily high but not infinite, characterizing a super-Penrose process. It is also shown that particle 4 has negative energy, living in its own electric ergosphere before being engulfed by the event horizon. For zero cosmological constant the results do not depend on the number of dimensions, but they do for nonzero cosmological constant, which also introduces differences in the lower bound for the energy extracted.

The Gravitomagnetic Field and Penrose Processes

Abstract:Results from general relativistic theoretical Monte Carlo computer simulations of Compton scattering and e-e+ pair production processes in the ergosphere of a supermassive (10^8 solar mass) rotating black hole are presented. Particles from an accretion disk fall into the ergosphere and scatter off particles that are in bound equatorially and nonequatorially confined orbits. The Penrose mechanism, in general, allows rotational energy of a Kerr black hole to be extracted by scattered particles escaping from the ergosphere to infinity (i.e., large distances from the black hole). The results of these model calculations show that a form of the Penrose mechanism is capable of producing the observed high energy particles (up to of order GeV) emitted by quasars and other active galactic nuclei (AGNs), without the necessity of the external electromagnetic field of the accretion disk. Importantly, these model calculations show that the Lense-Thirring effect, i.e., the dragging of inertial frames into rotation, caused by the angular momentum of the rotating black hole, results in a gravitomagnetic (GM) force being exerted on the scattered escaping particles. Inside the ergosphere, where this dragging is severe, in appears that the GM vector field lines are frame dragged into the positive azimuthal direction, i.e., the direction of rotation of the black hole. The resulting GM force acting on the Penrose scattered particles produces symmetrical and asymmetrical (or one-sided) particle emissions in the polar direction, consistent with the astrophysical jets observed in radio strong AGNs. Note, these Penrose processes can apply to any size rotating black hole.

Abstract:We derive specific properties of electromagnetism when gravitational effects are not negligible and analyze their impact on new physics at the horizons of black holes. We show that a neutral configuration of charges in a region of high redshift, characterized by a large g tt , produces a highly localized electromagnetic field that vanishes just beyond that region. This phenomenon implies the existence of extensive families of spacetime structures generated by electromagnetic degrees of freedom that are as compact as black holes. We construct neutral bound states of extremal black holes in four dimensions and in five dimensions, where one direction is compact. These geometries are indistinguishable from a neutral black hole, referred to as distorted Schwarzschild , except in an infinitesimal region near its horizon where the entrapped electromagnetic structures start to manifest. The five-dimensional solutions satisfy various criteria for describing black hole microstructure: they increase in size with the Newton constant, are as compact as the Schwarzschild black hole, and have an entropy that scales like M 2 .

Abstract:On the basis of general relativity and quantum statistics, it was shown (Neslu\v{s}an L.: 2009, Phys. Rev. D 80, 024015, arxiv:0808.3484) that the equation of state (ES) of extremely hot Fermi-Dirac gas in the surface layer of an ultra-relativistic compact object converges to the same form as the relativistic equation of thermodynamical equilibrium (RETE), which is the condition of stability of the object. The description of energy state of a gas particle was completed with the term corresponding with the potential-type energy. The necessity of such the term is set by the demand of convergence of the relativistic particle-impulse distribution law to its Maxwell-Boltzmann form in the classical limit. The identity of the ES and RETE, both applied to the gas in the object's surface layer, becomes perfect, yielding the stable object, when the object's physical radius is identical to its gravitational radius. In this state, the internal energy of gas particles in a volume of the object's surface layer increases over all limits in the frame of the volume and this opens the question if the horizon of events actually is an insuperable barrier. It seems to be possible that some matter can be temporarily lifted above the surface or, so far, be ejected from the object and can emit a radiation detectable by a distant observer. In our contribution, we demonstrate a general validity of the functional form of the potential-type energy found in our previous work. The consistency of the RETE with its non-relativistic approximation can occur only for this functional form. We also point out some observational consequences of the approximate identity of ES and RETE before the object collapses, in the proper time, to its gravitational radius as well as the possible observational consequences of the infinitely high internal energy in the surface layer of already collapsed object. In general, we propagate the idea that a lot of phenomena observed at the stellar-sized or supermassive black holes (or not-yet black holes) can be not necessarily related to the structures in a vicinity of the black hole, e.g. to an accretion disk, but they can be linked directly to the behaviour of the central, ultra-compact object.

Abstract:We study scalar field configurations around Kerr black holes with a time-independent energy-momentum tensor. These stationary `scalar clouds', confined near the black hole (BH) by their own mass or a mirror at fixed radius, exist at the threshold for energy extraction via superradiance. Motivated by the electromagnetic Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism, we explore whether scalar clouds could serve as a proxy for the force-free magnetosphere in the BZ process. We find that a stationary energy-extracting scalar cloud solution exists when the reflecting mirror is replaced by a semi-permeable surface which allows the cloud to radiate some energy to infinity while maintaining self-sustained superradiance. The radial energy flux displays the same behaviour for rapidly rotating holes as magnetohydrodynamic simulations predict for the BZ mechanism.

Energy Extraction from Loop Quantum Black Holes: The Role of Magnetic Penrose Process and Quantum Gravity Effects with Astrophysical Insights

Abstract:In this study, we explore the influence of quantum gravitational corrections, derived from Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), on the efficiency of the magnetic Penrose process (MPP) in black hole (BH) environments. We begin by analyzing the rotating Loop Quantum Black Hole (LQBH) metric, describing the structure of the event horizon and ergosphere as functions of the quantum parameter $\epsilon = \gamma \delta$, with $\gamma$ representing the Immirzi parameter and $\delta$ the polymeric parameter, and the spin parameter $a$. These modifications provide a novel setting for exploring the dynamics of charged particles near the LQBH and evaluating the resultant energy extraction through the MPP. Interestingly, for a given value of the LQBH parameter $a$, we observe that the ergosphere region of the LQBH exhibits a more intricate structure compared to its classical counterpart, the Kerr BH, as $\epsilon$ increases. Furthermore, we find that the overall efficiency of the process decreases with $\epsilon$ that decreases $a_{max}$, again in contrast to the Kerr BH, where efficiency rises with an increasing $a$. Our analysis also extends to astrophysical contexts, applying constraints on the mass and magnetic field of LQBHs for astrophysical BH candidates, including SgrA*, M87*, NGC 1052, and BZ (Blandford and Znajek sources, i.e., supermassive BHs with masses around $10^9 M_\odot$ and magnetic fields in the range $10^3-10^4 \text{G}$). We assess these sources as potential accelerators of high-energy protons across different values of the quantum parameter $\epsilon$. Additionally, we examine how variations in the magnetic field strength $B$ and quantum corrections impact the energy of protons accelerated from M87$^{\star}$ and Sgr A$^{\star}$ following beta decay.

On Particle Collisions in the Vicinity of Charged Black Holes

Abstract:The process of particle collision in the vicinity of black holes is known to generate unbounded energies in the center-of-mass frame (the Bañados–Silk–West (BSW) effect) under specific conditions. We consider this process in the charged black hole metrics, namely, the Reissner–Nordström (RN) and Majumdar–Papapetrou (MP) metrics. We consider energy extraction from a Bardeen regular black hole due to the BSW effect. As in the RN case, we show that there is no restriction on energy extraction, but for real charged particles this effect is negligible. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for this process. The conditions for the BSW effect in RN and MP metrics are shown to be identical, which is explained by the asymptotic equivalence of the two metrics near the horizons. Energy extraction in the RN metric is discussed. It is shown that if two real particles collide while falling onto a black hole, they are extremely unlikely to generate an ultra-massive particle. For the case of head-on collisions, we derive an upper bound on the extracted mass, which depends on the lapse function of the metric at the point of collision.

Here we study the absorption and superradiant amplification of a monochromatic planar wave in a charged, massive scalar field impinging on the electrically charged Ayón-Beato-García (ABG) RBH. Comparisons are drawn with absorption and superradiance for the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole in linear electrodynamics. We find that, in a certain parameter regime, the ABG absorption cross section is negative, due to superradiance, and moreover it is unbounded from below as the momentum of the wave approaches zero; this phenomenon of "unbounded superradiance" is absent in the RN case. We show how the parameter space can be divided into regions, using the bounded/unbounded and absorption/amplification boundaries. After introducing a high-frequency approximation based on particle trajectories, we calculate the absorption cross section numerically, via the partial-wave expansion, as a function of wave frequency, and we present a gallery of results. The cross section of the ABG RBH is found to be larger (smaller) than in the RN case when the field charge has the same (opposite) sign as the black hole charge. We show that it is possible to find "mimics": situations in which the cross sections of both black holes are very similar. Abstract:In this paper, we employ a general relativistic formalism and develop new theoretical tools that allow us to analytically express the mass and electric charge of the Reissner-Nordström black hole as well as its distance to a distant observer in terms of few directly observable quantities, such as the total frequency shift, aperture angle of the telescope, and redshift rapidity. Our analytic and concise formulas are valid on the midline, and the redshift rapidity is a relativistic invariant observable that represents the evolution of the frequency shift with respect to the proper time in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime. This procedure is applicable for particles undergoing circular motion around a spherically symmetric and electrically charged black hole, which is the case for accretion disks orbiting supermassive black holes hosted at the core of active galactic nuclei. Although this type of black hole is expected to be electrically neutral, our results provide a novel method to measure the electric charge of the Reissner-Nordström black hole, hence can shed some light on this claim. Besides, these results allow us to measure the mass of the black hole and its distance from the Earth, and we can employ the general formulas in black hole parameter estimation studies.

Evaporation of Primordial Charged Black Holes: Timescale and Evolution of Thermodynamic Parameters

Abstract:The evolution of primordial black holes formed during the reheating phase is revisited. For reheating temperatures in the range of 1012–1013 GeV, the initial masses are respectively of the order of 1010–108MP, where MP is the Planck mass. These newborn black holes have a small charge-to-mass ratio of the order of 10−3, a consequence of statistical fluctuations present in the plasma constituting the collapsing matter. Charged black holes can be rapidly discharged by the Schwinger mechanism, but one expects that, for very light black holes satisfying the condition M/MP<<MP/mW (mW is the mass of the heaviest standard model charged W-boson), the pair production process is probably strongly quenched. Under these conditions, these black holes evaporate until attaining extremality with final masses of about 107–105MP. Timescales to reach extremality as a function of the initial charge excess were computed, as well as the evolution of the horizon temperature and the charge-to-mass ratio. The behavior of the horizon temperature can be understood in terms of the well-known discontinuity present in the heat capacity for a critical charge-to-mass ratio Q/GM=3/2.

Abstract:We study the motion of uncharged particles and photons in the background of a magnetically charged Euler–Heisenberg (EH) black hole (BH) with scalar hair. The spacetime can be asymptotically (A)dS or flat. After investigating particle motions around the BH and the behavior of the effective potential of the particle radial motion, we determine the contribution of the BH parameters to the geodesics. Photons follow null geodesics of an effective geometry induced by the corrections of the EH non-linear electrodynamics. Thus, after determining the effective geometry, we calculate the shadow of the BH. We also analyze in detail the case of extremal BH spacetimes and we find that the radius of both the event horizon and shadow exhibits discontinuities when varying with respect to either the magnetic charge or the scalar charge. These extremal scenarios exist for sufficiently small values of the EH parameter, and imply the formation of a second photon ring around the BH shadow. Upon comparing the theoretically calculated BH shadow to the images of the shadows of M87* and Sgr A* observed by the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration, we impose constraints on the BH parameters, namely the scalar hair ( ), the magnetic charge ( ) and the EH parameter ( ). For sufficiently large values of the EH parameter, our model is in agreement with the EHT observations for approximately every value for the BH magnetic charge.

Abstract:In this paper, we employ a general relativistic formalism and develop new theoretical tools that allow us to analytically express the mass and electric charge of the Reissner–Nordström black hole as well as its distance to a distant observer in terms of few directly observable quantities, such as the total frequency shift, aperture angle of the telescope, and redshift rapidity. Our analytic and concise formulas are valid on the midline, and the redshift rapidity is a relativistic invariant observable that represents the evolution of the frequency shift with respect to the proper time in the Reissner–Nordström spacetime. This procedure is applicable for particles undergoing circular motion around a spherically symmetric and electrically charged black hole, which is the case for accretion disks orbiting supermassive black holes hosted at the core of active galactic nuclei. Although this type of black hole is expected to be electrically neutral, our results provide a novel method to measure the electric charge of the Reissner–Nordström black hole, hence can shed some light on this claim. Besides, these results allow us to measure the mass of the black hole and its distance from the Earth, and we can employ the general formulas in black hole parameter estimation studies.
