Abstract:Global models of planet formation tend to begin with an initial set of planetary embryos for the sake simplicity. While this approach gives valuable insights on the evolution of the initial embryos, the initial distribution itself is a bold assumption. Limiting oneself to an initial distribution may neglect essential physics that precedes, or follows said initial distribution. We wish to investigate the effect of dynamic planetary embryo formation on the formation of planetary systems. The presented framework begins with an initial disk of gas, dust and pebbles. The disk evolution, the formation of planetesimals and the formation of planetary embryos is modeled consistently. Embryos then grow by pebble, planetesimal and eventually gas accretion. Planet disk interactions and N-body dynamics with other simultaneously growing embryos is included in the framework. We show that the formation of planets can occur in multiple consecutive phases. Earlier generations grow massive by pebble accretion but are subject to fast type I migration and thus accretion to the star. The later generations of embryos that form grow to much smaller masses by planetesimal accretion, as the amount of pebbles in the disk has vanished. The formation history of planetary systems may be far more complex than an initial distribution of embryos could reflect. The dynamic formation of planetary embryos needs to be considered in global models of planet formation to allow for a complete picture of the systems evolution.

Accretion among preplanetary bodies: the many faces of runaway growth

Abstract:(abridged) When preplanetary bodies reach proportions of ~1 km or larger in size, their accretion rate is enhanced due to gravitational focusing (GF). We have developed a new numerical model to calculate the collisional evolution of the gravitationally-enhanced growth stage. We validate our approach against existing N-body and statistical codes. Using the numerical model, we explore the characteristics of the runaway growth and the oligarchic growth accretion phases starting from an initial population of single planetesimal radius R_0. In models where the initial random velocity dispersion (as derived from their eccentricity) starts out below the escape speed of the planetesimal bodies, the system experiences runaway growth. We find that during the runaway growth phase the size distribution remains continuous but evolves into a power-law at the high mass end, consistent with previous studies. Furthermore, we find that the largest body accretes from all mass bins; a simple two component approximation is inapplicable during this stage. However, with growth the runaway body stirs up the random motions of the planetesimal population from which it is accreting. Ultimately, this feedback stops the fast growth and the system passes into oligarchy, where competitor bodies from neighboring zones catch up in terms of mass. Compared to previous estimates, we find that the system leaves the runaway growth phase at a somewhat larger radius. Furthermore, we assess the relevance of small, single-size fragments on the growth process. In classical models, where the initial velocity dispersion of bodies is small, these do not play a critical role during the runaway growth; however, in models that are characterized by large initial relative velocities due to external stirring of their random motions, a situation can emerge where fragments dominate the accretion.

Abstract:In the sequential accretion model, planets form through the sedimentation of dust, cohesive collisions of planetesimals, and coagulation of protoplanetary embryos prior to the onset of efficient gas accretion. As progenitors of terrestrial planets and the cores of gas giant planets, embryos have comparable masses and are separated by the full width of their feeding zones after the oligarchic growth. Within this context, we investigate the orbit-crossing time (T-c) of protoplanetary systems with equal planetary masses and initial separation k(0) scaled by their mutual Hill radii ("EMS systems"). In a gas-free environment, log [T-c/(1 yr)] similar or equal to A + B log (k(0)/2.3), where A and B are functions of the planetary masses and initial eccentricities. This power law is caused by a random-walk diffusion of velocity dispersion sigma(t) in the EMS systems. The diffusion also leads to ( 1) a Rayleigh distribution of eccentricities with probability P( t) = (e/sigma(2)) exp [-e(2)/(2 sigma(2))] at time t and ( 2) an evolution of average eccentricity alpha t(1/2). As evidence of this chaotic diffusion, the observed eccentricities of known extrasolar planets obey a Rayleigh distribution. In a gaseous environment, as embryos become well separated (with k0 similar or equal to 6-12), their orbit-crossing tendency is suppressed by tidal drag, and their growth is stalled as their orbits are circularized. We evaluate the isolation masses of the embryos, which determine the probability of gas giant formation, as a function of the dust and gas surface densities.
Planetary Growth with Collisional Fragmentation and Gas Drag

Abstract:As planetary embryos grow, gravitational stirring of planetesimals by embryos strongly enhances random velocities of planetesimals and makes collisions between planetesimals destructive. The resulting fragments are ground down by successive collisions. Eventually the smallest fragments are removed by the inward drift due to gas drag. Therefore, the collisional disruption depletes the planetesimal disk and inhibits embryo growth. We provide analytical formulae for the final masses of planetary embryos, taking into account planetesimal depletion due to collisional disruption. Furthermore, we perform the statistical simulations for embryo growth (which excellently reproduce results of direct $N$-body simulations if disruption is neglected). These analytical formulae are consistent with the outcome of our statistical simulations. Our results indicate that the final embryo mass at several AU in the minimum-mass solar nebula can reach about $\sim 0.1$ Earth mass within $10^7$ years. This brings another difficulty in formation of gas giant planets, which requires cores with $\sim 10$ Earth masses for gas accretion. However, if the nebular disk is 10 times more massive than the minimum-mass solar nebula and the initial planetesimal size is larger than 100 km, as suggested by some models of planetesimal formation, the final embryo mass reaches about 10 Earth masses at 3-4 AU. The enhancement of embryos' collisional cross sections by their atmosphere could further increase their final mass to form gas giant planets at 5-10 AU in the solar system.

Abstract:According to the core-accretion scenario, planets form in protostellar disks through the condensation of dust, coagulation of planetesimals, and emergence of protoplanetary embryos. At a few AU in a minimum mass nebula, embryos' growth is quenched by dynamical isolation due to the depletion of planetesimals in their feeding zone. However, embryos with masses ($M_p$) in the range of a few Earth masses ($M_\oplus$) migrate toward a transition radius between the inner viscously heated and outer irradiated regions of their natal disk. Their limiting isolation mass increases with the planetesimals surface density. When $M_p > 10 M_\oplus$, embryos efficiently accrete gas and evolve into cores of gas giants. We use numerical simulation to show that, despite streamline interference, convergent embryos essentially retain the strength of non-interacting embryos' Lindblad and corotation torque by their natal disks. In disks with modest surface density (or equivalently accretion rates), embryos capture each other in their mutual mean motion resonances and form a convoy of super Earths. In more massive disks, they could overcome these resonant barriers to undergo repeated close encounters including cohesive collisions which enable the formation of massive cores.

Abstract:Context. Planetary embryos can continue to grow by pebble accretion until they become giant planet cores. Simultaneously, these embryos mutually interact and also migrate due to torques arising from the protoplanetary disk. Aims. Our aim is to study how pebble accretion alters the orbital evolution of embryos undergoing Type-I migration. In particular, we try to determine whether or not the embryos establish resonant chains, and if so, whether or not these chains are prone to instabilities. Further, we investigate the possibility that giant planet cores form through embryo merging which can be more rapid than pebble accretion alone. Methods. For the first time, we perform self-consistent global-scale radiative hydrodynamic simulations of a two-fluid protoplanetary disk consisting of gas and pebbles, the latter being accreted by embedded embryos. Accretion heating, along with other radiative processes, is accounted for to correctly model the Type-I migration. Results. We track the evolution of four super-Earth-like embryos, initially located in a region where the disk structure allows for a convergent migration. Generally, embryo merging is facilitated by rapidly increasing embryo masses and breaks the otherwise oligarchic growth. Moreover, we find that the orbital eccentricity of each embryo is considerably excited (≃0.03) due to the presence of an asymmetric under-dense lobe of gas – a so-called “hot trail” – produced by accretion heating of the embryo’s vicinity. Eccentric orbits lead the embryos to frequent close encounters and make resonant locking more difficult. Conclusions. Embryo merging typically produces one massive core (≳10 ME) in our simulations, orbiting near 10 AU. Pebble accretion is naturally accompanied by the occurrence of eccentric orbits which should be considered in future efforts to explain the structure of exoplanetary systems.

Abstract:The growth time scales of planetary embryos and their formation process are imperative for our understanding on how planetary systems form and develop. They determine the subsequent growth mechanisms during the life stages of a circumstellar disk. We quantify the timescales and spatial distribution of planetary embryos via collisional growth and fragmentation of dynamically forming 100km sized planetesimals. In our study, the formation timescales of viscous disk evolution and planetesimal formation are linked to the formation of planetary embryos in the terrestrial planet zone. We connect a one dimensional model for viscous gas evolution, dust and pebble dynamics and pebble flux regulated planetesimal formation to the N-body code LIPAD. Our framework enables us to study the formation, growth, fragmentation and evolution of planetesimals with an initial size of 100km in diameter for the first million years of a viscous disk. Our study shows the effect of the planetesimal surface density evolution on the preferential location and timescales of planetary embryo formation. A one dimensional analytically derived model for embryo formation based on the local planetesimal surface density evolution is presented. This model manages to reproduce the spatial distribution, formation rate and total number of planetary embryos at a fraction of the computational cost of the N-body simulations. The formation of planetary embryos in the terrestrial planet zone occurs simultaneously to the formation of planetesimals. The local planetesimal surface density evolution and the orbital spacing of planetary embryos in the oligarchic regime serve well as constraints to model planetary embryo formation analytically. Our embryo formation model will be a valuable asset in future studies regarding planet formation.
Growing the seeds of pebble accretion through planetesimal accretion

Abstract:We explore the growth of planetary embryos by planetesimal accretion up to and beyond the point where pebble accretion becomes efficient at the so-called Hill-transition mass. Both the transition mass and the characteristic mass of planetesimals formed by the streaming instability increase with increasing distance from the star. We developed a model for the growth of a large planetesimal (embryo) embedded in a population of smaller planetesimals formed in a filament by the streaming instability. The model includes in a self-consistent way the collisional mass growth of the embryo, the fragmentation of the planetesimals, the velocity evolution of all involved bodies, as well as the viscous spreading of the filament. We find that the embryo accretes all available material in the filament during the lifetime of the protoplanetary disc only in the inner regions of the disc. In contrast, we find little or no growth in the outer parts of the disc beyond 5--10 AU. Overall, our results demonstrate very long timescales for collisional growth of planetesimals in the regions of the protoplanetary disc where giant planets form. As such, in order to form giant planets in cold orbits, pebble accretion must act directly on the largest bodies present in the initial mass-function of planetesimals with little or no help from mutual collisions.

Planetesimal Accretion at Short Orbital Periods

Abstract:Formation models in which terrestrial bodies grow via the pairwise accretion of planetesimals have been reasonably successful at reproducing the general properties of the solar system, including small body populations. However, planetesimal accretion has not yet been fully explored in the context of the wide variety of recently discovered extrasolar planetary systems, particularly those that host short-period terrestrial planets. In this work, we use direct N-body simulations to explore and understand the growth of planetary embryos from planetesimals in disks extending down to ~1 day orbital periods. We show that planetesimal accretion becomes nearly 100 percent efficient at short orbital periods, leading to embryo masses that are much larger than the classical isolation mass. For rocky bodies, the physical size of the object begins to occupy a significant fraction of its Hill sphere towards the inner edge of the disk. In this regime, most close encounters result in collisions, rather than scattering, and the system does not develop a bimodal population of dynamically hot planetesimals and dynamically cold oligarchs, like is seen in previous studies. The highly efficient accretion seen at short orbital periods implies that systems of tightly-packed inner planets should be almost completely devoid of any residual small bodies. We demonstrate the robustness of our results to assumptions about the initial disk model, and also investigate the effects that our simplified collision model has on the emergence of this non-oligarchic growth mode in a planet forming disk.

The maximum mass of planetary embryos formed in core-accretion models

Abstract:We compute the maximum mass a growing planetary embryo can reach depending on the size of accreted planetesimals or pebbles, to infer the possibility of growing the cores of giant planets, and giant planets themselves. We compute the internal structure of the gas envelope of planetary embryos, to determine the core mass that is necessary to bind an envelope large enough to destroy planetesimals or pebbles while they are gravitationally captured. We also consider the effect of the advection wind originating from the protoplanetary disk, following the results of Ormel et al. (2015). We show that for low mass pebbles, once the planetary embryo is larger than ~1 Mearth, the envelope is large enough to destroy and vaporize pebbles completely before they can reach the core. The material constituting pebbles is therefore released in the planetary envelope, and later on dispersed in the protoplanetary disk, if the advection wind is strong enough. As a consequence the growth of the planetary embryo is stopped at a mass that is so small that Kelvin-Helmholtz accretion cannot lead to the accretion of significant amounts of gas. For larger planetesimals, a similar process occurs but at much larger mass, of the order of ten Earth masses, and is followed by rapid accretion of gas. If the effect of the advection is as efficient as described in Ormel al. (2015), the combined effect of the vaporization of accreted solids in the envelope of forming planetary embryos, and of this advection wind, prevents the growth of the planets at masses smaller or similar to the Earth mass in the case of formation by pebble accretion, up to a distance of the order of 10 AU. In the case of formation by accretion of large mass planetesimals, the growth of the planetary core is limited at masses ~10 Mearth but further growth of the planet can proceed by gas accretion.

Abstract:The accretion of pebbles on planetary cores has been widely studied in recent years and is found to be a highly effective mechanism for planetary growth. While most studies assume planetary cores as an initial condition in their simulation, the question how, where and when these cores form is often neglected. We study the impact of pebble accretion during the formation phase and subsequent evolution of planetary embryos in the early stages of circumstellar disk evolution. In doing so we aim to quantify the timescales and local dependency of planetary embryo formation, based on the solid evolution of the disk. We connect a one dimensional two population model for solid evolution and pebble flux regulated planetesimal formation to the N-body code LIPAD. In our study we focus on the growth of planetesimals with an initial size of 100 km in diameter by planetesimal collisions and pebble accretion for the first 1 million years of a viscously evolving disk. We compare 18 different N-body simulations in which we vary the total planetesimal mass after 1 million years, the surface density profile of the planetesimal disk, the radial pebble flux and the possibility of pebble accretion. Pebble accretion leads to the formation of fewer, but substantially more massive embryos. The area of possible embryo formation is weakly influenced by the accretion of pebbles and the innermost embryos tend to form slightly earlier compared to the simulations in which pebble accretion is neglected. Pebble accretion strongly enhances the formation of super earths in the terrestrial planet region, but it does not enhance the formation of embryos at larger distances.

Growth after the Streaming Instability

Abstract:Context. Streaming instability is a key mechanism in planet formation, clustering pebbles into planetesimals with the help of self-gravity. It is triggered at a particular disk location where the local volume density of solids exceeds that of the gas. After their formation, planetesimals can grow into protoplanets by feeding from other planetesimals in the birth ring as well as by accreting inwardly drifting pebbles from the outer disk. Aims. We aim to investigate the growth of planetesimals into protoplanets at a single location through streaming instability. For a solar-mass star, we test the conditions under which super-Earths are able to form within the lifetime of the gaseous disk. Methods. We modified the Mercury N-body code to trace the growth and dynamical evolution of a swarm of planetesimals at a distance of 2.7 AU from the star. The code simulates gravitational interactions and collisions among planetesimals, gas drag, type I torque, and pebble accretion. Three distributions of planetesimal sizes were investigated: (i) a mono-dispersed population of 400 km radius planetesimals, (ii) a poly-dispersed population of planetesimals from 200 km up to 1000 km, (iii) a bimodal distribution with a single runaway body and a swarm of smaller, 100 km size planetesimals. Results. The mono-dispersed population of 400 km size planetesimals cannot form protoplanets of a mass greater than that of the Earth. Their eccentricities and inclinations are quickly excited, which suppresses both planetesimal accretion and pebble accretion. Planets can form from the poly-dispersed and bimodal distributions. In these circumstances, it is the two-component nature that damps the random velocity of the large embryo through the dynamical friction of small planetesimals, allowing the embryo to accrete pebbles efficiently when it approaches 10−2 M⊕. Accounting for migration, close-in super-Earth planets form. Super-Earth planets are likely to form when the pebble mass flux is higher, the disk turbulence is lower, or the Stokes number of the pebbles is higher. Conclusions. For the single site planetesimal formation scenario, a two-component mass distribution with a large embryo and small planetesimals promotes planet growth, first by planetesimal accretion and then by pebble accretion of the most massive protoplanet. Planetesimal formation at single locations such as ice lines naturally leads to super-Earth planets by the combined mechanisms of planetesimal accretion and pebble accretion.
Fast accretion of small planetesimals by protoplanetary cores

Abstract:We explore the dynamics of small planetesimals coexisting with massive protoplanetary cores in a gaseous nebula. Gas drag strongly affects the motion of small bodies leading to the decay of their eccentricities and inclinations, which are excited by the gravity of protoplanetary cores. Drag acting on larger ($\gtrsim 1$ km), high velocity planetesimals causes a mere reduction of their average random velocity. By contrast, drag qualitatively changes the dynamics of smaller ($\lesssim 0.1-1$ km), low velocity objects: (1) small planetesimals sediment towards the midplane of the nebula forming vertically thin subdisk; (2) their random velocities rapidly decay between successive passages of the cores and, as a result, encounters with cores typically occur at the minimum relative velocity allowed by the shear in the disk. This leads to a drastic increase in the accretion rate of small planetesimals by the protoplanetary cores, allowing cores to grow faster than expected in the simple oligarchic picture, provided that the population of small planetesimals contains more than roughly 1% of the solid mass in the nebula. Fragmentation of larger planetesimals ($\gtrsim 1$ km) in energetic collisions triggered by the gravitational scattering by cores can easily channel this amount of material into small bodies on reasonable timescales ($< 1$ Myr in the outer Solar System), providing a means for the rapid growth (within several Myr at 30 AU) of rather massive protoplanetary cores. Effects of inelastic collisions between planetesimals and presence of multiple protoplanetary cores are discussed.

From Dust to Planets I: Planetesimal and Embryo Formation

Abstract:Planet formation models begin with proto-embryos and planetesimals already fully formed, missing out a crucial step, the formation of planetesimals/proto-embryos. In this work, we include prescriptions for planetesimal and proto-embryo formation arising from pebbles becoming trapped in short-lived pressure bumps, in thermally evolving viscous discs to examine the sizes and distributions of proto-embryos and planetesimals throughout the disc. We find that planetesimal sizes increase with orbital distance, from ~10 km close to the star to hundreds of kilometres further away. Proto-embryo masses are also found to increase with orbital radius, ranging from $10^{-6} M_{\rm \oplus}$ around the iceline, to $10^{-3} M_{\rm \oplus}$ near the orbit of Pluto. We include prescriptions for pebble and planetesimal accretion to examine the masses that proto-embryos can attain. Close to the star, planetesimal accretion is efficient due to small planetesimals, whilst pebble accretion is efficient where pebble sizes are fragmentation limited, but inefficient when drift dominated due to low accretion rates before the pebble supply diminishes. Exterior to the iceline, planetesimal accretion becomes inefficient due to increasing planetesimal eccentricities, whilst pebble accretion becomes more efficient as the initial proto-embryo masses increase, allowing them to significantly grow before the pebble supply is depleted. Combining both scenarios allows for more massive proto-embryos at larger distances, since the accretion of planetesimals allows pebble accretion to become more efficient, allowing giant planet cores to form at distances upto 10 au. By including more realistic initial proto-embryo and planetesimal sizes, as well as combined accretion scenarios, should allow for a more complete understanding in the beginning to end process of how planets and planetary systems form.

Abstract:Incremental particle growth in turbulent protoplanetary nebulae is limited by a combination of barriers that can slow or stall growth. Moreover, particles that grow massive enough to decouple from the gas are subject to inward radial drift which could lead to the depletion of most disk solids before planetesimals can form. Compact particle growth is probably not realistic. Rather, it is more likely that grains grow as fractal aggregates which may overcome this so-called radial drift barrier because they remain more coupled to the gas than compact particles of equal mass. We model fractal aggregate growth and compaction in a viscously evolving solar-like nebula for a range of turbulent intensities $\alpha_{\rm{t}} = 10^{-5}-10^{-2}$. We do find that radial drift is less influential for porous aggregates over much of their growth phase; however, outside the water snowline fractal aggregates can grow to much larger masses with larger Stokes numbers more quickly than compact particles, leading to rapid inward radial drift. As a result, disk solids outside the snowline out to $\sim 10-20$ AU are depleted earlier than in compact growth models, but outside $\sim 20$ AU material is retained much longer because aggregate Stokes numbers there remain lower initially. Nevertheless, we conclude even fractal models will lose most disk solids without the intervention of some leap-frog planetesimal forming mechanism such as the Streaming Instability (SI), though conditions for the SI are generally never satisfied, except for a brief period %for a brief stage around $\sim 0.2$ Myr at the snowline for $\alpha_{\rm{t}}=10^{-5}$.

Abstract:Context. The core accretion mechanism is presently the most widely accepted cause of the formation of giant planets. For simplicity, most models presently assume that the growth of planetary embryos occurs in isolation. Aims. We explore how the simultaneous growth of two embryos at the present locations of Jupiter and Saturn affects the outcome of planetary formation. Methods. We model planet formation on the basis of the core accretion scenario and include several key physical ingredients. We consider a protoplanetary gas disk that exponentially decays with time. For planetesimals, we allow for a distribution of sizes from 100 m to 100 km with most of the mass in the smaller objects. We include planetesimal migration as well as different profiles for the surface density Σ of the disk. The core growth is computed in the framework of the oligarchic growth regime and includes the viscous enhancement of the planetesimal capture cross-section. Planet migration is ignored. Results. By comparing calculations assuming formation of embryos in isolation to calculations with simultaneous embryo growth, we find that the growth of one embryo generally significantly affects the other. This occurs in spite of the feeding zones of each planet never overlapping. The results may be classified as a function of the gas surface density profile Σ: if Σ and the protoplanetary disk is rather massive, Jupiter's formation inhibits the growth of Saturn. If Σ r-1 isolated and simultaneous formation lead to very similar outcomes; in the the case of Σ Saturn grows faster and induces a density wave that later accelerates the formation of Jupiter. Conclusions. Our results indicate that the simultaneous growth of several embryos impacts the final outcome and should be taken into account by planet formation models.

Growth after the Streaming Instability-from Planetesimal Accretion to Pebble Accretion

Abstract:Context. Streaming instability is a key mechanism in planet formation, clustering pebbles into planetesimals with the help of selfgravity. It is triggered at a particular disk location where the local volume density of solids exceeds that of the gas. After their formation, planetesimals can grow into protoplanets by feeding from other planetesimals in the birth ring as well as by accreting inwardly drifting pebbles from the outer disk. Aims. We aim to investigate the growth of planetesimals into protoplanets at a single location through streaming instability. For a solar-mass star, we test the conditions under which super-Earths are able to form within the lifetime of the gaseous disk. Methods. We modified the Mercury N-body code to trace the growth and dynamical evolution of a swarm of planetesimals at a distance of 2.7 AU from the star. The code simulates gravitational interactions and collisions among planetesimals, gas drag, type I torque, and pebble accretion. Three distributions of planetesimal sizes were investigated: (i) a mono-dispersed population of 400 km radius planetesimals, (ii) a poly-dispersed population of planetesimals from 200 km up to 1000 km, (iii) a bimodal distribution with a single runaway body and a swarm of smaller, 100 km size planetesimals. Results. The mono-dispersed population of 400 km size planetesimals cannot form protoplanets of a mass greater than that of the Earth. Their eccentricities and inclinations are quickly excited, which suppresses both planetesimal accretion and pebble accretion. Planets can form from the poly-dispersed and bimodal distributions. In these circumstances, it is the two-component nature that damps the random velocity of the large embryo through the dynamical friction of small planetesimals, allowing the embryo to accrete pebbles efficiently when it approaches 10−2 M⊕. Accounting for migration, close-in super-Earth planets form. Super-Earth planets are likely to form when the pebble mass flux is higher, the disk turbulence is lower, or the Stokes number of the pebbles is higher. Conclusions. For the single site planetesimal formation scenario, a two-component mass distribution with a large embryo and small planetesimals promotes planet growth, first by planetesimal accretion and then by pebble accretion of the most massive protoplanet. Planetesimal formation at single locations such as ice lines naturally leads to super-Earth planets by the combined mechanisms of planetesimal accretion and pebble accretion.

Abstract:A critical phase in the standard model for planet formation is the runaway growth (RG) phase. During RG bodies in the 0.1–100 km size range (planetesimals) quickly produce a number of much larger seeds. The RG phase is essential for planet formation as the emergent planetary embryos can accrete the leftover planetesimals at large gravitational focusing factors. However, torques resulting from turbulence-induced density fluctuations may violate the criterion for the onset of RG, which is that the magnitude of the planetesimals' random (eccentric) motions is less than their escape velocity. This condition represents a more stringent constraint than the condition that planetesimals survive their mutual collisions. To investigate the effects of magneto-rotational instability turbulence on the viability of the RG scenario, we apply our semi-analytical recipes of Paper I, which we augment by a coagulation/fragmentation model for the dust component. We find that the surface-area-equivalent abundance of 0.1 μm particles is reduced by factors 102–103, which tends to render the dust irrelevant to the turbulence. We express the turbulent activity in the midplane regions in terms of a size srun above which planetesimals will experience RG. We find that srun is mainly determined by the strength of the vertical net field that threads the disks and the disk radius. At disk radii beyond 5 AU, srun becomes larger than ∼100 km and the collision times among these bodies longer than the duration of the nebula phase. Our findings imply that the classical, planetesimal-dominated model for planet formation is not viable in the outer regions of a turbulent disk.

Abstract:In the context of massive fragmenting protoplanetary discs, Boss suggested that grains can grow and sediment inside giant planet embryos formed at R∼ 5 au away from the star. Several authors since then criticized the suggestion. Convection may prevent grain sedimentation, and the embryos cannot even form so close to the parent star as cooling is too inefficient at these distances. Here we reconsider the grain sedimentation process suggested by Boss but inside an embryo formed, as expected in the light of the cooling constraints, at R∼ 100 au. Such embryos are much less dense and are also cooler. We make analytical estimates of the process and also perform simple spherically symmetric radiation hydrodynamics simulations to test these ideas. We find that convection in our models does not become important before a somewhat massive (∼ an Earth mass; this is clarified in a followup paper) solid core is built. Turbulent mixing slows down dust sedimentation but is overwhelmed by grain sedimentation when the latter grows to a centimetres size. The minimum time required for dust sedimentation to occur is a few thousand years, and is a strong function of the embryo’s mass, dust content and opacity. An approximate analytical criterion is given to delineate conditions in which a giant embryo contracts and heats up faster than dust can sediment. As Boss et al., we argue that core formation through grain sedimentation inside the giant planet embryos may yield an unexplored route to form giant gas and giant ice planets. The present model also stands at the basis of Paper III, where we study the possibility of forming terrestrial planet cores by tidal disruption and photoevaporation of the planetary envelope.
