Abstract:It is well known that the Painlevé equations can formally degenerate to autonomous differential equations with elliptic function solutions in suitable scaling limits. A way to make this degeneration rigorous is to apply Deift-Zhou steepest-descent techniques to a Riemann-Hilbert representation of a family of solutions. This method leads to an explicit approximation formula in terms of theta functions and related algebro-geometric ingredients that is difficult to directly link to the expected limiting differential equation. However, the approximation arises from an outer parametrix that satisfies relatively simple conditions. By applying a method that we learned from Alexander Its, it is possible to use these simple conditions to directly obtain the limiting differential equation, bypassing the details of the algebro-geometric solution of the outer parametrix problem. In this paper, we illustrate the use of this method to relate an approximation of the algebraic solutions of the Painlevé-III (D$_7$) equation valid in the part of the complex plane where the poles and zeros of the solutions asymptotically reside to a form of the Weierstrass equation.

Variations for Some Painlevé Equations

Abstract:This paper first discusses irreducibility of a Painlevé equation $P$. We explain how the Painlevé property is helpful for the computation of special classical and algebraic solutions. As in a paper of Morales-Ruiz we associate an autonomous Hamiltonian $\mathbb{H}$ to a Painlevé equation $P$. Complete integrability of $\mathbb{H}$ is shown to imply that all solutions to $P$ are classical (which includes algebraic), so in particular $P$ is solvable by ''quadratures''. Next, we show that the variational equation of $P$ at a given algebraic solution coincides with the normal variational equation of $\mathbb{H}$ at the corresponding solution. Finally, we test the Morales-Ramis theorem in all cases $P_{2}$ to $P_{5}$ where algebraic solutions are present, by showing how our results lead to a quick computation of the component of the identity of the differential Galois group for the first two variational equations. As expected there are no cases where this group is commutative.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Aimo Hinkkanen and Ilpo Laine proved that the transcendental solutions to Painleve's second differential equation w"=a+zw+w^3 have either order of growth 3 or else 3/2. We complete this result by proving that there exist no sub-normal solutions (order of growth 3/2) other than the so-called Airy solutions.

Unique special solution for discrete Painlevé II

Abstract:We show that the discrete Painlevé II equation with starting value $a_{-1}=-1$ has a unique solution for which $-1 < a_n < 1$ for every $n \geq 0$. This solution corresponds to the Verblunsky coefficients of a family of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. This result was already proved for certain values of the parameter in the equation and recently a full proof was given by Duits and Holcomb. In the present paper we give a different proof that is based on an idea put forward by Tomas Lasic Latimer which uses orthogonal polynomials. We also give an upper bound for this special solution.

Abstract:In families of Painlevé VI differential equations having common algebraic solutions we classify all the members which come from geometry, i.e. the corresponding linear differential equations which are Picard-Fuchs associated to families of algebraic varieties. In our case, we have one family with zero dimensional fibers and all others are families of curves. We use the classification of families of elliptic curves with four singular fibers done by Herfurtner in 1992 and generalize the results of Doran in 2001 and Ben Hamed and Gavrilov in 2005.

Abstract:Let w(z) be a finite-order meromorphic solution of the second-order difference equation w(z+1)+w(z-1) = R(z,w(z)) (eqn 1) where R(z,w(z)) is rational in w(z) and meromorphic in z. Then either w(z) satisfies a difference linear or Riccati equation or else equation (1) can be transformed to one of a list of canonical difference equations. This list consists of all known difference Painleve equation of the form (1), together with their autonomous versions. This suggests that the existence of finite-order meromorphic solutions is a good detector of integrable difference equations.

Abstract:The paper addresses a conjecture of Shapiro and Tater on the similarity between two sets of points in the complex plane; on one side is the values of $t\in \mathbb{C}$ for which the spectrum of the quartic anharmonic oscillator in the complex plane $$\frac{{\rm d}^2 y}{{\rm d}x^2} - ( x^4 + tx^2 + 2Jx )y = \Lambda y, $$ with certain boundary conditions, has repeated eigenvalues. On the other side is the set of zeroes of the Vorob'ev-Yablonskii polynomials, i.e. the poles of rational solutions of the second Painlevé equation. Along the way, we indicate a surprising and deep connection between the anharmonic oscillator problem and certain degenerate orthogonal polynomials.

Methods Appl. 14 (2018), Article ID: 088, 19 pp.] that the recurrence coefficients of discrete orthogonal polynomials on the nonnegative integers with hypergeometric weights satisfy a system of nonlinear difference equations. There is also a connection to the solutions of the [Formula: see text]-form of the sixth Painlevé equation (one of the parameters of the weights being the independent variable in the differential equation) [G. Filipuk and W. Van Assche, Discrete orthogonal polynomials with hypergeometric weights and Painlevé VI, Symmetry Integr. Geom. Methods Appl. 14 (2018), Article ID: 088, 19 pp.]. In this paper, we derive a second-order nonlinear difference equation from the system and present explicit formulas showing how this difference equation arises from the Bäcklund transformations of the sixth Painlevé equation. We also present an alternative way to derive the connection between the recurrence coefficients and the solutions of the sixth Painlevé equation.

Abstract:In this paper we analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the poles of certain rational solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation. These solutions are constructed by relating the corresponding tau function with a Hankel determinant of a certain sequence of moments. This approach was also used by one of the authors and collaborators in the study of the rational solutions of the second Painlevé equation. More specifically we study the roots of the corresponding polynomial tau function, whose location corresponds to the poles of the associated rational solution. We show that, upon suitable rescaling, the roots fill a well-defined region bounded by analytic arcs when the degree of the polynomial tau function tends to infinity. Moreover we provide an approximate location of these roots within the region in terms of suitable quantization conditions.

In addition, its nonpolar solutions, which grow without bounds as the iteration index increases, are of particular relevance to other areas of mathematics. We combine theory and asymptotics with high-precision numerical simulations to arrive at the following picture: when extended to include backward iterates, known nonpolar solutions of dP1 form a family of heteroclinic connections between two fixed points at infinity. One of these solutions, the Freud orbit of orthogonal polynomial theory, is a singular limit of the other solutions in the family. Near their asymptotic limits, all solutions converge to the Freud orbit, which follows invariant curves of dP1, when written as a three-dimensional autonomous system, and reaches the point at positive infinity along a center manifold. This description leads to two important results. First, the Freud orbit tracks sequences of period-1 and 2 points of the autonomous counterpart of dP1 for large positive and negative values of , respectively. Second, we identify an elegant method to obtain an asymptotic expansion of the iterates on the Freud orbit for large positive values of . The structure of invariant manifolds emerging from this picture contributes to a deeper understanding of the global analysis of an interesting class of discrete dynamical systems.

Abstract:In this paper rational solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation are discussed. There are two classes of rational solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation, one expressed in terms of the generalised Laguerre polynomials, which are the main subject of this paper, and the other in terms of the generalised Umemura polynomials. Both the generalised Laguerre polynomials and the generalised Umemura polynomials can be expressed as Wronskians of Laguerre polynomials specified in terms of specific families of partitions. The properties of the generalised Laguerre polynomials are determined and various differential-difference and discrete equations found. The rational solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation, the associated $\sigma$-equation and the symmetric fifth Painlevé system are expressed in terms of generalised Laguerre polynomials. Non-uniqueness of the solutions in special cases is established and some applications are considered. In the second part of the paper, the structure of the roots of the polynomials are investigated for all values of the parameter. Interesting transitions between root structures through coalescences at the origin are discovered, with the allowed behaviours controlled by hook data associated with the partition. The discriminants of the generalised Laguerre polynomials are found and also shown to be expressible in terms of partition data. Explicit expressions for the coefficients of a general Wronskian Laguerre polynomial defined in terms of a single partition are given.

Abstract:We give four examples of families of orthogonal polynomials for which the coefficients in the recurrence relation satisfy a discrete Painlevé equation. The first example deals with Freud weights $|x|^\rho \exp(-|x|^m)$ on the real line, and we repeat Freud's derivation and analysis for the cases $m=2,4,6$. The Freud equations for the recurrence coefficients when $m=4$ corresponds to the discrete Painlevé I equation. The second example deals with orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle for the weight $\exp(\lambda \cos \theta)$. These orthogonal polynomials are important in the theory of random unitary matrices. Periwal and Shevitz have shown that the recurrence coefficients satisfy the discrete Painlevé II equation. The third example deals with discrete orthogonal polynomials on the positive integers. We show that the recurrence coefficients of generalized Charlier polynomials can be obtained from a solution of the discrete Painlevé II equation. The fourth example deals with orthogonal polynomials on $\pm q^n$. We consider the discrete $q$-Hermite I polynomials and some discrete $q$-Freud polynomials for which the recurrence ceofficients satisfy a $q$-deformation of discrete Painlevé I.

Abstract:We obtain asymptotics of polynomials satisfying the orthogonality relations $$ \int_{\mathbb{R}} z^k P_n(z; t , N) \mathrm{e}^{-N \left(\frac{1}{4}z^4 + \frac{t}{2}z^2 \right)} \mathrm{d} z = 0 \quad \text{ for } \quad k = 0, 1, ..., n-1, $$ where the complex parameter $t$ is in the so-called two-cut region. As an application, we deduce asymptotic formulas for certain families of solutions of Painlevé-IV which are indexed by a non-negative integer and can be written in terms of parabolic cylinder functions. The proofs are based on the characterization of orthogonal polynomials in terms of a Riemann-Hilbert problem and the Deift-Zhou non-linear steepest descent method.

Random Matrices Theory and Application

Abstract:Random Matrices: Theory and Applications, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study a nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equation which we call the Ermakov–Painlevé XXV equation since under certain restrictions on its coefficients it can be reduced either to the Ermakov or the Painlevé XXV equation. The Ermakov–Painlevé XXV equation arises from a generalized Riccati equation and the related third-order linear differential equation via the Schwarzian derivative. The generalized Riccati equation has two families of Riccati solutions and we study the corresponding solutions to the Ermakov–Painlevé XXV equation. We show that one of these families appears only in the Ermakov case. We give examples of the Ermakov–Painlevé XXV equations and show how to construct their solutions expressed in terms of elementary or in terms of the classical special functions.
