Abstract:Bound states of solitons ("molecules") occur in various settings, playing an important role in the operation of fiber lasers, optical emulation, encoding, and communications. Soliton interactions are generally related to breathing dynamics in nonlinear dissipative systems, and maintain potential applications in spectroscopy. In the present work, dichromatic breather molecules (DBMs) are created in a synchronized mode-locked fiber laser. Real-time delay-shifting interference spectra are measured to display the temporal evolution of the DBMs, that cannot be observed by means of the usual real-time spectroscopy. As a result, robust out-of-phase vibrations are found as a typical intrinsic mode of DBMs. The same bound states are produced numerically in the framework of a model combining equations for the population inversion in the mode-locked laser and cross-phase-modulation-coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations for amplitudes of the optical fields in the fiber segments of the laser cavity. The results demonstrate that the Q-switching instability induces the onset of breathing oscillations. The findings offer new possibilities for the design of various regimes of the operation of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:Optical frequency-comb sources, which emit perfectly periodic and coherent waveforms of light 1 , have recently rapidly progressed towards chip-scale integrated solutions. Among them, two classes are particularly significant—semiconductor Fabry–Perót lasers 2,3,4,5,6 and passive ring Kerr microresonators 7,8,9 . Here we merge the two technologies in a ring semiconductor laser 10,11 and demonstrate a paradigm for the formation of free-running solitons, called Nozaki–Bekki solitons. These dissipative waveforms emerge in a family of travelling localized dark pulses, known within the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation 12,13,14 . We show that Nozaki–Bekki solitons are structurally stable in a ring laser and form spontaneously with tuning of the laser bias, eliminating the need for an external optical pump. By combining conclusive experimental findings and a complementary elaborate theoretical model, we reveal the salient characteristics of these solitons and provide guidelines for their generation. Beyond the fundamental soliton circulating inside the ring laser, we demonstrate multisoliton states as well, verifying their localized nature and offering an insight into formation of soliton crystals 15 . Our results consolidate a monolithic electrically driven platform for direct soliton generation and open the door for a research field at the junction of laser multimode dynamics and Kerr parametric processes.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of incoherently coupled dark vector soliton trapping in a fiber laser. Dark vector solitons along the two orthogonal polarization directions though with large difference in central frequency, energy and darkness could be still synchronously trapped as a group velocity locked dark vector soliton in virtue of the incoherent interactions. Our numerical simulation could well rebirth the experimental observations and confirm the existence of incoherently coupled dark vector soliton under certain conditions.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of two types of phase-locked vector soliton in weakly birefringent cavity erbium-doped fiber lasers. While a phase-locked dark-dark vector soliton was only observed in fiber lasers of positive dispersion, a phase-locked dark-bright vector soliton was obtained in fiber lasers of either positive or negative dispersion. Numerical simulations confirmed the experimental observations, and further showed that the observed vector solitons are the two types of phase-locked polarization domain-wall solitons theoretically predicted.

Abstract:We demonstrated a multi-dark soliton train generated from self-mode-locking ultra-long ring cavity fiber laser. The fiber laser used 10m double-clad Yb-doped fiber as gain medium, and used a polarization independent isolator to ensure the light propagation in one direction. The ring cavity of the laser was designed without any intra-cavity polarization controlling component. The cavity length is 1300 meters by insetting single mode fiber. When the pump power was increased to 2.75W, the multi-dark soliton trains were obtained. The stable pulse train has a repetition rate of 153.9 kHz corresponding to the cavity length. The number of sub-pulse continues to decrease during the increase of the incident pumping power until 3.39W. Stable three peaks appear in the spectra of our fiber laser due to the absence of the polarization controller in the cavity. The maximum peak wavelength locates around 1083.9nm with the 3dB bandwidth of 1.4nm. There are two sidebands with the central wavelength of 1086.3nm and 1090.1nm with a lower intensity. The occurrence of multi-dark soliton pulses train is relevant to the self-mode-locked operation at the cavity with a large amount of normal dispersion and accumulated nonlinearity.
Higher-order dark solitons and oscillatory dynamics in microcavity polariton condensates

Abstract:Dark solitons carrying quantized phase information arouse great interest in different nonlinear systems. A dark soliton in 1D can be stabilized in microcavity polariton condensates as a confinement is imposed on it to prevent its decay. Such a confinement can be realized by optical manners, i.e., by using optically induced potential traps. Under nonresonant excitation with spatially periodically modulated optical beams, we numerically demonstrate that besides fundamental dark solitons, higher-order dark solitons with multiple density minima and $\pi$-phase jumps can also stably survive in the potential (pump) valleys. Simultaneously exciting several orders of dark soliton states by properly choosing the lattice constant of the optical pump gives rise to dark oscillators. In some cases, the stably trapped dark solitons in adjacent pump valleys squeeze the condensate density between them and generate another type of density dips in the pump peak area. Surprisingly, such a density dip supports another stable dark soliton with a larger size which is essentially composed of two counter-propagating gray solitons.

Abstract:We report experimental observations performed using a net anomalous dispersion Er-doped fiber ring laser without polarization-selective elements, highlighting the domain-wall solitary pulses generated under the incoherent polarization coupling. By adjusting the pump power and the polarization state appropriately, bright and dark solitons can stably co-exist in the cavity, both centered at 1562.16 nm with a 3-dB spectral width of ∼ 0.15 nm and a repetition rate of 3.83 MHz. Moreover, the 0.8 mm long thulium-doped fiber (TDF) facilitated the mode-locking and self-starting of the laser. This is the first demonstration of a laser being used to generate bright and dark solitons synchronously while using TDF as the saturable absorber (SA). Except possessing the all-fiber structure, the laser exhibits good stability, which may have a significant influence on improvement of the pulse-laser design, and may broaden practical applications in optical sensing, optical communication, and soliton multiplexed systems.

Abstract:We numerically study the transport dynamics of vector solitons in ytterbium-doped fiber lasers based on a coupled Ginzburg-Landau equation with higher-order effects. By adjusting the small signal gain coefficient and intracavity birefringence, the number of soliton molecules can be manipulated, the transmission of synchronous and asynchronous vector solitons and the generation of chaotic pulse sequences can be realized. Synchronous vector solitons can be generated when the intracavity birefringence is relatively low, the stable transmission of multi-soliton molecules and the interaction between soliton molecules can be achieved. By changing the value of the phase delay, periodic pulsating solitons can be produced. Furthermore, the phenomenon of the pulse train from the period-doubling to chaos can also be observed. With the enhancement of the intracavity birefringence, asynchronous vector solitons can also achieve stable transmission in the cavity, which the amplitudes and widths of two components are opposite with the different phases. The proposed model has universal application value and the numerical results have guiding significance for studying polarization tunable lasers and exploring the nonlinear mechanism in fiber lasers.

Parametrically-driven temporal cavity solitons in a bichromatically-driven pure Kerr resonator

Abstract:Temporal cavity solitons (CSs) are pulses of light that can persist endlessly in dispersive, nonlinear optical resonators. They have been extensively studied in the context of resonators with purely cubic (Kerr-type) nonlinearity that are externally-driven with a monochromatic continuous wave laser -- in such systems, the solitons manifest themselves as unique attractors whose carrier frequency coincides with that of the external driving field. Recent experiments have, however, shown that a qualitatively different type of temporal CS can arise via parametric down-conversion in resonators with simultaneous quadratic and cubic nonlinearity. In contrast to conventional CSs in pure-Kerr resonators, these \emph{parametrically-driven cavity solitons} come in two different flavours with opposite phases, and they are spectrally centred at half of the frequency of the driving field. Here, we theoretically and numerically show that, under conditions of bichromatic driving, such parametrically-driven CSs can also arise in dispersive resonators with pure Kerr nonlinearity. In this case, the solitons arise through parametric four-wave mixing, come with two distinct phases, and have a carrier frequency in between the two external driving fields. We show that, when all waves are resonant, the solitons can experience long-range interactions due to their back-action on the intracavity fields at the pump frequencies, and we discuss the parameter requirements for the solitons' existence. Besides underlining the possibility of exciting a new type of cavity soliton in dispersive Kerr cavities, our work advances the theoretical modeling of resonators that are coherently-driven with polychromatic fields.

Abstract:Dark solitons feature local dips on a modulationally stable continuous-wave background. Compared with bright solitons, the dark solitons in fiber lasers are more stable in noise circumstances and not much susceptible to loss. Thus, dark solitons have been widely applied in optics communication, optics sensing, and nonlinear optics fields. Although the mechanism of generation of dark solitons in fiber lasers has been numerically studied in the last almost five decades, the experimental observation of dark solitons from a fiber laser system just started since 2009, and it has attracted much attention. This review mainly describes the generation and propagation of nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) dark soliton in fiber lasers from both experimental and simulation perspectives, and then summarizes a detailed recent progress of the NLSE dark soliton, domain-wall dark soliton, and cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (CQNLSE) dark soliton. At the end of this review, the practical applications and perspectives of dark soliton fiber laser are also provided.

Self-starting microring laser solitons from the periodic cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons are optical pulses propagating in a nonlinear dielectric waveguide without dispersing. These attractive properties have spurred much research into integrated soliton generation in microring resonators at telecom wavelenghts. However, these solitons are generated via external pumping of a nonlinear medium, which limits system compactness and the wavelength coverage. Recently it was shown that dissipative Kerr solitons can be generated directly in the gain medium of mid-infrared semiconductor ring lasers, where the energy is supplied via electrical pumping. These technological advances enable a new route towards the monolithic generation of diverse light states in a wide frequency range, requiring insight into the conditions necessary for achieving control over the system. In this work, we study in depth the phase diagram of such systems, exhibiting fast gain dynamics and no external pumping, and which are described by the complex cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation with periodic boundary conditions. While previous studies have focused on large system sizes, we here focus on finite ring sizes leading to a modification of the phase space and enlargement of the region for stable soliton formation. In addition to localized, dispersion-less soliton pulses on a finite background, breather solitons are predicted to occur under feasible experimental conditions. This enables monolithic generation of solitions in electrically pumped media such as quantum cascade lasers, extending the availability of soliton sources to mid-infrared and terahertz frequencies which are very attractive for molecular spectroscopy, free-space communication, imaging, and coating thickness measurements.

Abstract:We investigate a control of the motion of localized structures of light by means of delay feedback in the transverse section of a broad area nonlinear optical system. The delayed feedback is found to induce a spontaneous motion of a solitary localized structure that is stationary and stable in the absence of feedback. We focus our analysis on an experimentally relevant system namely the Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL). In the absence of the delay feedback we present experimental evidence of stationary localized structures in a 80 $\mu$m aperture VCSEL. The spontaneous formation of localized structures takes place above the lasing threshold and under optical injection. Then, we consider the effect of the time-delayed optical feedback and investigate analytically the role of the phase of the feedback and the carrier lifetime on the self-mobility properties of the localized structures. We show that these two parameters affect strongly the space time dynamics of two-dimensional localized structures. We derive an analytical formula for the threshold associated with drift instability of localized structures and a normal form equation describing the slow time evolution of the speed of the moving structure.

Abstract:Pure-quartic soliton (PQS) fiber lasers provide a promising avenue for exploring novel soliton interaction dynamics and generating high-energy pulses. Here, we present the numerical observation of vector PQSs generation and the evolution dynamics in a mode-locked fiber laser, using the coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations. We investigate the buildup dynamics of vector PQSs in a mode-locked laser with birefringent fibers, passing through three stages: energy amplification, energy pulsation owing to the cross-phase modulation (XPM) effect, and finally stabilization. Depending on the strength of the cavity-birefringence, the evolution of PQSs in non-polarization-maintaining fibers reveals that both the elliptical-polarization vector PQSs and near-linear-polarization vector PQSs can be formed by the energy conservation and balance between the two orthogonal directions. Additionally, we observe the transition process from vector PQSs to scalar PQSs with higher cavity-birefringence, resulting from the failure compensation of the walk-off via the soliton trapping effect between the two orthogonal components. These results provide valuable insights into the ultrafast transient process of vector solitons and enhance the understanding of PQS generation in fiber lasers.
Backscattering-Induced Dissipative Solitons in Ring Quantum Cascade Lasers

Abstract:Ring quantum cascade lasers have recently gained considerable attention, showing ultrastable frequency comb and soliton operation, thus opening a way to integrated spectrometers in the midinfrared and terahertz fingerprint regions. Thanks to a self-consistent Maxwell-Bloch model, we demonstrate, in excellent agreement with the experimental data, that a small but finite coupling between the counterpropagating waves arising from distributed backscattering is essential to stabilize the soliton solution.

Dark Topological Valley Hall Edge Solitons

Abstract:Topological edge solitons propagating along the edge of a photonic topological insulator are localized self-sustained hybrid states that are immune to defects/disorders due to the protection of the edge states stemming from the nontrivial topology of the system. Here, we predict that exceptionally robust dark valley Hall edge solitons may form at the domain walls between two honeycomb lattices with broken inversion symmetry. The underlying structure can be created with femtosecond laser inscription, it possesses a large bandgap where well-localized dark edge solitons form, and in contrast to systems with broken time-reversal symmetry, it does not require external magnetic fields or complex longitudinal waveguide modulations for the realization of the topological phase. We present the envelope equation allowing constructing dark valley Hall edge solitons analytically. Such solitons propagate without radiation into the bulk of the lattice and can circumvent sharp corners, which allows observing their persistent circulation along the closed triangular domain wall boundary. They survive over huge distances even in the presence of disorder in the underlying lattice. We also investigate interactions of closely located dark topological valley Hall edge solitons and show that they are repulsive and lead to the formation of two gray edge solitons, moving with different group velocities departing from group velocity of the linear edge state on which initial dark solitons were constructed. Our results illustrate that nonlinear valley Hall systems can support a rich variety of new self-sustained topological states and may inspire their investigation in other nonlinear systems, such as atomic vapors and polariton condensates.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-organized optical waves arising from the interplay between Kerr effect and dispersion. They can form spontaneously in nonlinear microresonators pumped with an external continuous-wave laser, which provides the parametric gain for the proliferation of an ultrastable frequency comb. These miniaturized and battery driven microcombs have become a disruptive technology for precision metrology, broadband telecommunication and ultrafast optical ranging. In this work, we report on the first experimental observation of dissipative Kerr solitons generated in a ring cavity with a fast semiconductor gain medium. The moderate quality factor of the ring cavity is compensated by the giant resonant Kerr nonlinearity of a quantum cascade laser, which is more than a million times larger than in Si3N4. By engineering the dispersion of the cavity, we observe the formation of bright dissipative Kerr solitons in the mid-infrared range. Soliton formation appears after an abrupt symmetry breaking between the two lasing directions of the ring cavity. The pump field of the soliton is generated by direct electrical driving and closely resembles the soliton Cherenkov radiation observed in passive microcombs. Two independent techniques shed light on the waveform and coherence of the solitons and confirm a pulse width of approximately 3 ps. Our results extend the spectral range of soliton microcombs to mid-infrared wavelengths and will lead to integrated, battery driven and turnkey spectrometers in the molecular fingerprint region.

Abstract:Optical solitons are wavepackets that can sustain the shape via a nonlinear refractive index potential well. They exist in a wide range of optical systems spanning optical fibers, fiber lasers and parametric oscillators. Recently, a new type optical solitons have been observed in coherently pumped high-Q microcavities. The observation of microcavity optical solitons provides a well-controlled experimental platform to study soliton physics. Microcavity optical solitons also endow an array of highly stable spectral lines in the frequency domain, which advance the miniaturization of frequency comb systems. These soliton microcombs have been self-reference stabilized and could enable many chip-based applications including optical frequency synthesizers, optical atomic clocks, data transmission, spectrometer and LiDAR in the near future. Here, the fundamental of microcavity optical solitons was introduced, with a special focus on soliton interaction dynamics. The microcavity dual-comb measurement based applications in fast imaging and mid-infrared gas spectroscopy were also discussed.
Dark solitons in Fabry-Perot resonators with Kerr media and normal dispersion

Abstract:Ranges of existence and stability of dark cavity-soliton stationary states in a Fabry-Perot resonator with a Kerr nonlinear medium and normal dispersion are determined. The Fabry-Perot configuration introduces nonlocal coupling that shifts the cavity detuning by the round trip average power of the intracavity field. When compared with ring resonators described by the Lugiato-Lefever equation, nonlocal coupling leads to strongly detuned dark cavity solitons that exist over a wide range of detunings. This shift is a consequence of the counterpropagation of intracavity fields inherent to Fabry-Perot resonators. At difference with ring resonators, the existence and stability of dark soliton solutions are dependent on the size and number of solitons in the cavity. We investigate the effect of nonlocal coupling of Fabry-Perot resonators on multiple dark solitons and demonstrate long range interactions and synchronization of temporal oscillations.
