Abstract:A group theoretical description of the Majorana-Oppenheimer quantum electrodynamics is considered. Different spinor realizations of the Maxwell and Dirac fields are discussed. A representation of the Majorana-Oppenheimer wave equations in terms of the Gel'fand-Yaglom formalism is given.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a time-headway model, introduced in Physica A 296:320 (2001), for buses on a bus route. By including a simple no-passing rule, we are able to enumerate and study the unstable modes of a homogeneous system. We then discuss the application of the model to realistic scenarios, showing that the range of reasonable parameter values is more restricted than one might imagine. We end by showing that strict stability in a homogeneous bus route requires careful monitoring by each bus of the bus in front of it, but in many cases this is unnecessary because the time it takes for the instability to appear is longer than a bus would normally spend on a route.

Phase Diagram Analysis Based on a Temporal-Spatial Queueing Model.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a simple temporal-spatial queueing model to quantitatively address some typical congestion patterns that were observed around on/off-ramps. In particular, we examine three prime factors that play important roles in ramping traffic scenarios: the time tau(in) for a vehicle to join a jam queue, the time tau(out) for this vehicle to depart from this jam queue, and the time interval T for the ramping vehicle to merge into the mainline. Based on Newell's simplified car-following model, we show how tau(in) changes with the main road flow rate q(main). Meanwhile, T is the reciprocal of the ramping road flow rate q(ramp). Thus, we analytically derive the macroscopic phase diagram plotted on the q(main)-versus-q(ramp) plane and tau(in)-versus-T plane based on the proposed model. Further study shows that the new queueing model not only reserves the merits of Newell's model on the microscopic level but helps quantify the contributions of these parameters in characterizing macroscopic congestion patterns as well. Previous approaches distinguished phases merely through simulations, but our model could derive analytical boundaries for the phases. The phase transition conditions obtained by this model agree well with simulations and empirical observations. These findings help reveal the origins of some well-known phenomena during traffic congestion.

Abstract:This paper proposes a generalized car-following (CF) model to depict the dynamics of traffic flow that includes human-driven vehicles (HDVs), connected vehicles (CVs) and connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). Notably, the model integrates human reaction times, information delays, and status data from multiple preceding vehicles endowed with communication capabilities. Then, by utilizing the perturbation method, the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM) as an example is taken in this CF model to determine the stability condition of the mixed traffic based on CAV penetration rate and their spatial distribution. Finally, comprehensive co-simulation using PreScan and MATLAB/Simulink is developed to explore the impact of varying CAV penetration rates across seven distinct spatial distributions on traffic capacity and dynamic performance. The findings underscore the efficacy of our proposed model in analyzing mixed traffic scenarios comprising HDVs, CVs, and CAVs. Increasing CAV penetration rates can lead to improved stability, capacity, and dynamic performance within mixed traffic environments. Notably, at the CAV penetration rate below 60%, the spatial distribution labeled as CAVs-HDVs-CVs (where CAVs lead the traffic flow, followed by HDVs, then CVs) demonstrates superior dynamic performance, whereas the HDVs-CVs-CAVs configuration (with HDVs leading, followed by CVs, then CAVs) performs worst. However, it’s noteworthy that spatial distribution scarcely affects dynamic performance when the CAV penetration rate exceeds 60%.

Abstract:In this paper, we link two research directions of road traffic-the mesoscopic headway distribution model and the microscopic vehicle interaction model-together to account for the empirical headway/spacing distributions. A unified car-following model is proposed to simulate different driving scenarios, including traffic on highways and at intersections. Unlike our previous approaches, the parameters of this model are directly estimated from the Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) Trajectory Data. In this model, empirical headway/spacing distributions are viewed as the outcomes of stochastic car-following behaviors and the reflections of the unconscious and inaccurate perceptions of space and/or time intervals that people may have. This explanation can be viewed as a natural extension of the well-known psychological car-following model (the action point model). Furthermore, the fast simulation speed of this model will benefit transportation planning and surrogate testing of traffic signals.
A Traffic Breakdown Model Based on Queueing Theory

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a queueing model to describe traffic breakdown phenomena caused by perturbations of on-ramp merging vehicles. In congested mainline traffic flow, we assume that a merging vehicle will trigger a jam queue formulation. If this jam queue cannot dissipate before the next vehicle merges into the main road, it could grow into a wide jam and eventually result in traffic breakdown. Different from many existing models that focused on the propagation of jam waves, the proposed model emphasizes the size evolution of a jam queue (local congested vehicle cluster) instead of its spatial evolutions. This new approach reduces analysis difficulties and allows us to directly link microscopic driving behaviors with macroscopic breakdown phenomena. Test results show that the simulated breakdown probability curve (parameter tuning using Next Generation Simulation vehicular trajectories) fits with the empirical breakdown probability curve that is estimated by Performance Measurement System (PeMS) data. This indicates that this new model can account for the probability of breakdown phenomena and help us set an appropriate inflow rate so as to void breakdown and meanwhile maintain a high road capacity.
An Exactly Solvable Dual Bus Route Model

Abstract:In 1998, O'Loan et al. introduced a simplified bus route model to illustrate bus dynamics. However, fluctuations in passenger numbers make it challenging to achieve an exact solution for the model's stationary state, as these fluctuations can impact bus behavior. In this study, we present an exactly solvable model for a dual bus route system that builds upon O'Loan et al.'s model. This dual model allows us to comprehensively analyze bus route dynamics. Our model introduces additional parameters not previously considered by O'Loan et al. to account for neighboring effects and align with an observation in the original model, which can influence the average stationary current and velocity of buses. When the neighboring effect is weak, our model behaves similarly to O'Loan et al.'s bus route model. However, with a strong neighboring effect, our model exhibits intriguing characteristics. Additionally, in some limiting cases, our model recovers well-known models such as the simple exclusion process, its generalization, the cooperative exclusion process, and the RNA polymerase model during the elongation stage.

Abstract:SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. Bus bunching is a typical phenomenon observed in daily public transit operations and that significantly reduces the reliability and attractiveness of transit service. Although various control strategies, such as vehicle holding, speed guidance, and signal priority, have been proposed to eliminate or alleviate bus bunching, the impact of road traffic flow on bus bunching has not been well studied. To bridge this gap, this work proposes a new mesoscopic simulation model by incorporating the lattice Boltzmann model to simulate bus bunching considering the impacts of road traffic flow. Simulation results show that by utilizing the new simulation model, different phase diagrams can be observed. Under different conditions of traffic flow-density evolution, i.e., no oscillation, single oscillation, global oscillation, and irregular oscillation, the resulting bus trajectories are significantly different. In addition, an investigation of a real-world bus line in Beijing with global positioning system (GPS)-based vehicle location data shows that some results of the model are qualitatively consistent with the actual characteristics of the bus route. It shows that the proposed new simulation model has great potential for enhancing our understanding of the impacts of road traffic flow on bus bunching.
Bus Travel Time Reliability Analysis: a Case Study

Abstract:The travel time reliability of buses has become increasingly important for public transit companies. In this study, a novel approach is proposed to evaluate and analyse the travel time reliability of bus services provided by TransLink in Queensland, Australia. In view of their stochastic features, the two components of travel time – dwell time and driving time – are represented by discrete distributed and normally distributed random variables respectively. Accordingly, the travel time could be described by Gaussian mixture models. Based on the proposed model, impact analysis shows that bus line reliability would increase by around 15% if onboard top-up for ‘go cards' (electronic tickets) was not offered by TransLink. It was found that not providing this top-up method would not significantly harm the benefit of go card users, but it would substantially increase the total social benefit thanks to improved bus line reliability.

Abstract:It is understood that congestion in traffic can be interpreted in terms of the instability of the equation of dynamic motion. The evolution of a traffic system from an unstable or metastable state to a globally stable state bears a strong resemblance to the phase transition in thermodynamics. In this work, we explore the underlying physics of the traffic system, by examining closely the physical properties and mathematical constraints of the phase transitions therein. By using a mesoscopic approach, one entitles the catastrophe model the same physical content as in the Landau's theory, and uncovers its close connections to the instability of the equation of motion and to the transition between different traffic states. In addition to the one-dimensional configuration space, we generalize our discussions to the higher-dimensional case, where the observed temporal oscillation in traffic flow data is attributed to the curl of a vector field. We exhibit that our model can reproduce the main features of the observed fundamental diagram including the inverse-λ shape and the wide scattering of congested traffic data. When properly parameterized, the main feature of the data can be reproduced reasonably well either in terms of the oscillating congested traffic or in terms of the synchronized flow.

Abstract:In this work, a heterogeneous traffic flow model coupled with the periodic boundary condition is proposed. Based on the previous models, a heterogeneous system composed of more than one kind of vehicles is considered. By bifurcation analysis, bifurcation patterns of the heterogeneous system are discussed in three situations in detail and illustrated by diagrams of bifurcation patterns. Besides, the stability analysis of the heterogeneous system is performed to test its anti-interference ability. The relationship between the number of vehicles and the stability is obtained. Furthermore, the attractor analysis is applied to investigate the nature of the heterogeneous system near its steady-state neighborhood. Phase diagrams of the process of the heterogeneous system from initial state to equilibrium state are intuitively presented.

Abstract:The gas-kinetic non-local traffic model is improved by taking into account the relative velocity of the correlated vehicles. The stability of different relaxation time modes is analytically investigated with the perturbation method. The analysis and numerical simulations validate that the density-velocity dependent relaxation time model is more stable than the other gas-kinetic traffic models in the high density traffic jams.
Stability analysis of a stochastic port-Hamiltonian car-following model

Abstract:Port-Hamiltonian systems are pertinent representations of many nonlinear physical systems. In this study, we formulate and analyse a general class of stochastic car-following models with a systematic port-Hamiltonian structure. The model class is a generalisation of classical car-following approaches, including the optimal velocity model of Bando et al. (1995), the full velocity difference model of Jiang et al. (2001), and recent stochastic following models based on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. In contrast to traditional models where the interaction is totally asymmetric (i.e., depending only on the speed and distance to the predecessor), the port-Hamiltonian car-following model also depends on the distance to the follower. We determine the exact stability condition of the finite system with $N$ vehicles and periodic boundaries. The stable system is ergodic with a unique Gaussian invariant measure. Other properties of the model are studied using numerical simulation. It turns out that the Hamiltonian component improves the flow stability and reduces the total energy in the system. Furthermore, it prevents the problematic formation of stop-and-go waves with oscillatory dynamics, even in the presence of stochastic perturbations.

Abstract:This paper studies the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of traffic dynamics at a crossroads which consists of two perpendicular one-lane roads, employing alternating update rules and periodic boundary conditions. Unlike in previous studies, the deterministic Nagel-Schreckenberg traffic flow model is adopted in this work. Based on a close observation of the evolution near the upstream and downstream traffic flow at the crossing point, we have found typical periodically recurring sequences of vehicle motion configurations, and their specific characteristics depend on the value of the maximum velocity of vehicles and the vehicle densities on both roads. We have presented phase diagrams which consist of five basic regions. The flow formulas in these regions have been analyzed or derived. The results of theoretical analysis are in good agreement with the simulation results.

Abstract:This paper studies phase diagrams of traffic states induced by the bottleneck of an unsignalized intersection which consists of two perpendicular one-lane roads. Parallel updates rules are employed for both roads. At the crossing point, in order to avoid colliding, the consideration of yield dynamics may be suitable herein. Different from previous studies, the deterministic Nagel and Schreckenberg model is adopted in this work. Based on theoretical analysis and computer simulations, the phase diagrams of traffic flow have been presented and the flow formulas in all regions have been derived in the phase diagram. The results of theoretical analysis are in good agreement with computer simulation ones. One finds an interesting phenomenon: there exist bistable states in some regions of the phase diagrams.

Abstract:This paper studies heterogeneous traffic flow that comprises two types of vehicles with different lengths at a single intersection consisting of two perpendicular one-lane roads. Based on theoretical analysis and computer simulations, we have presented the phase diagrams which consist of five regions and the topological structure of which is independent of the maximum velocity of vehicles m. The analytical formulas of the flows on the two roads have been obtained in all regions of the phase diagram, which depends on whether m is even or odd or m = 1. Local stability of traffic equilibria in an isotropic network

Abstract:For a static economic model of auto traffic in an isotropic zone, this paper classifies possible equilibria into three types, by whether traffic is hypercongested and by the relative slopes of “supply” and “demand” curves. We then conduct a local stability analysis of each type when density, demand and the unit travel time (inverse speed) evolve gradually and simultaneously according to dynamical systems of differential equations. Some hypercongested equilibria may be stable when demand adjusts quickly enough to congestion. Other hypercongested equilibria, which have counterintuitive comparative statics, are never stable. Non-hypercongested equilibria can be unstable under special circumstances. A discrete event simulation with a dynamic Poisson arrival process supports the results of the formal analysis.

Abstract:The two-lane driven system is a type of important model to research some transport systems, and also a powerful tool to investigate properties of nonequilibrium state systems. This paper presents a driven bidirectional two-lane model. The dynamic characteristics of the model with periodic boundary are investigated by Monte Carlo simulation, simple mean field, and cluster mean field methods, respectively. By simulations, phase separations are observed in the system with some values of model parameters. When the phase separation does not occur, cluster mean field results are in good agreement with simulation results. According to the cluster mean field analysis and simulations, a conjecture about the condition that the phase separation happens is proposed. Based on the conjecture, the phase boundary distinguishing phase separation state and homogeneous state is determined, and a corresponding phase diagram is drawn. The conjecture is validated through observing directly the spatiotemporal diagram and investigating the coarsening process of the system by simulation, and a possible mechanism causing the phase separation is also discussed. These outcomes maybe contribute to understand deeply transport systems including the congestion and efficiency of the transport, and enrich explorations of nonequilibrium state systems.

Abstract:Based on realistic traffic conditions, the macroscopic traffic flow model that considers the driver's anticipation and traffic jerk effect is improved, and the bifurcation theory is used to describe and predict nonlinear traffic phenomena on the road from the perspective of global stability. Firstly, the linear stability conditions and the Korteweg–de Vries–Burgers equation are derived using linear and nonlinear methods to characterize the evolution of traffic flow. The type and stability of the equilibrium solution are discussed using the bifurcation analysis method, and the conditions of existence of the Hopf bifurcation and saddle-node bifurcation are proved. Numerical simulations show that the model can describe the complex nonlinear dynamic phenomena observed on the road. The bifurcation analysis will be helpful for improving our understanding of stop-and-go and sudden changes in stability in real traffic flow.

Abstract:Studies of transit dwell times suggest that the delay caused by passengers boarding and alighting rises with the number of passengers on each vehicle. This paper incorporates such a "friction effect" into an isotropic model of a transit route with elastic demand. We derive a strongly unimodal "Network Alighting Function" giving the steady-state rate of passenger flows in terms of the accumulation of passengers on vehicles. Like the Network Exit Function developed for isotropic models of vehicle traffic, the system may exhibit hypercongestion. Since ridership depends on travel times, wait times and the level of crowding, the physical model is used to solve for (possibly multiple) equilibria as well as the social optimum. Using replicator dynamics to describe the evolution of demand, we also investigate the asymptotic local stability of different kinds of equilibria.

Abstract:With the gradual development of autonomous driving and connected communication technology, urban road networks will be shared by a combination of Human-driven vehicles (HDVs) and Connected vehicles (CVs) for a long era. Besides, as the actual vehicle operator, the driver regulates the vehicle state with an accelerator, gear lever, or brake, whereas the stepwise acceleration process is overlooked in the literature. Motivated by this, comprehensive kinetic difference between the two types of vehicles, we propose a novel heterogeneous multi-phase traffic flow accounting for the HDVs and CVs to close this hole. In the section on linear stability analysis, the reductive perturbation approach was applied to figure out the stability norm of the new model. The findings show that, on the one hand, inhibiting traffic bottlenecks is positively impacted by the penetration rate of CVs and the number of preceding vehicles taken into account; on the other hand, by varying the headway between following vehicles, the multiple-phase transition occurs; consequently, the number of turning points in the optimal velocity function is the sole factor that affects the number of stages in multi-phase transitions. Subsequently, the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation corresponding to the new model is deduced to investigate the nonlinear phenomenon of traffic flow at the vicinity of the critical point, and the kink-antikink soliton wave solution by solving the above characteristic equation can describe the “stop-and-go” phenomenon in real traffic flow. Finally, the conclusion of the numerical experiments is consistent with the above theoretical analysis. This research can provide insight into the dynamic evolution of road traffic flow during the transition from HDVs to semi-CVs and eventually to CVs.
