Abstract:Given Poincare spaces M and X, we study the possibility of compressing embeddings of M x I in X x I down to embeddings of M in X. This results in a new approach to embedding in the metastable range both in the smooth and Poincare duality categories.

Abstract:Given an acyclic map $X\to Y$ of closed manifolds dimension $d$, we study the relationship between the embeddings of $Y$ in $S^{n}$ with those of $X$ in $S^{n}$ when $n-d \ge 3$. The approach taken here is to first solve the Poincaré duality space variant of the problem. We then apply the surgery machine to obtain the corresponding results for manifolds. Thereafter, we focus on the case when $X$ is a smooth homology sphere and deduce results about the homotopy type of the space of block embeddings of $X$ in a sphere.

Abstract:We study the inverse problem for persistent homology: For a fixed simplicial complex $K$, we analyse the fiber of the continuous map $\mathrm{PH}$ on the space of filters that assigns to a filter $f: K \to \mathbb R$ the total barcode of its associated sublevel set filtration of $K$. We find that $\mathrm{PH}$ is best understood as a map of stratified spaces. Over each stratum of the barcode space, the map $\mathrm{PH}$ restricts to a (trivial) fiber bundle with fiber a polyhedral complex. Amongst other we derive a bound for the dimension of the fiber depending on the number of distinct endpoints in the barcode. Furthermore, taking the inverse image $\mathrm{PH}^{-1}$ can be extended to a monodromy functor on the (entrance path) category of barcodes. We demonstrate our theory on the example of the simplicial triangle giving a complete description of all fibers and monodromy maps. This example is rich enough to have a Möbius band as one of its fibers.

Abstract:We construct a Poincaré complex whose periodic total surgery obstruction vanishes but whose Spivak normal fibration does not admit a reduction to a stable euclidean bundle. This contradicts the conjunction of two claims in the literature: Namely, on the one hand that a Poincaré complex with vanishing periodic total surgery obstruction is homotopy equivalent to a homology manifold, which appears in work of Bryant--Ferry--Mio--Weinberger, and on the other that the Spivak normal fibration of a homology manifold always admits a reduction to a stable euclidean bundle, which appears in work of Ferry--Pedersen.

Abstract:We give new homotopy theoretic criteria for deciding when a fibration with homotopy finite fibers admits a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers. The criteria lead to a new and unexpected result about homeomorphism groups of manifolds. A tool used in the proof is a surjective splitting of the assembly map for Waldhausen's functor A(X). We also give concrete examples of fibrations having a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers but which fail to admit a compact fiber smoothing. The examples are detected by algebraic K-theory invariants. We consider a refinement of the Becker-Gottlieb transfer. We show that a version of the axioms described by Becker and Schultz uniquely determines the refined transfer for the class of fibrations admitting a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers. In an appendix, we sketch a theory of characteristic classes for fibrations. The classes are primary obstructions to finding a compact fiber smoothing.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the classification of embeddings of higher dimensional manifolds. We study the case of embeddings $S^p\times S^q\to S^m$, which we call knotted tori. The set of knotted tori in the the space of sufficiently high dimension, namely in the metastable range $m\ge p+3q/2+2$, $p\le q$, which is a natural limit for the classical methods of embedding theory, has been explicitely described earlier. The aim of this note is to present an approach which allows for results in lower dimension.

Abstract:For each prime $p$, we define a $t$-structure on the category $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau\text{-}\mathbf{Mod}_{harm}^b$ of harmonic $\mathbb{C}$-motivic left module spectra over $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau$, whose MGL-homology has bounded Chow-Novikov degree, such that its heart is equivalent to the abelian category of $p$-completed $BP_*BP$-comodules that are concentrated in even degrees. We prove that $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau\text{-}\mathbf{Mod}_{harm}^b$ is equivalent to $\mathcal{D}^b({{BP}_*{BP}\text{-}\mathbf{Comod}}^{ev})$ as stable $\infty$-categories equipped with $t$-structures. As an application, for each prime $p$, we prove that the motivic Adams spectral sequence for $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau$, which converges to the motivic homotopy groups of $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/\tau$, is isomorphic to the algebraic Novikov spectral sequence, which converges to the classical Adams-Novikov $E_2$-page for the sphere spectrum $\widehat{S^0}$. This isomorphism of spectral sequences allows Isaksen and the second and third authors to compute the stable homotopy groups of spheres at least to the 90-stem, with ongoing computations into even higher dimensions.

Abstract:Implementing an idea due to John Baez and James Dolan we define new invariants of Whitney stratified manifolds by considering the homotopy theory of smooth transversal maps. To each Whitney stratified manifold we assign transversal homotopy monoids, one for each natural number. The assignment is functorial for a natural class of maps which we call stratified normal submersions. When the stratification is trivial the transversal homotopy monoids are isomorphic to the usual homotopy groups. We compute some simple examples and explore the elementary properties of these invariants. We also assign `higher invariants', the transversal homotopy categories, to each Whitney stratified manifold. These have a rich structure; they are rigid monoidal categories for n>1 and ribbon categories for n>2. As an example we show that the transversal homotopy categories of a sphere, stratified by a point and its complement, are equivalent to categories of framed tangles.

Abstract:We propose a way of understanding homological mirror symmetry when a complex manifold is a smooth compact toric manifold. So far, in many example, the derived category $D^b(coh(X))$ of coherent sheaves on a toric manifold $X$ is compared with the Fukaya-Seidel category of the Milnor fiber of the corresponding Landau-Ginzburg potential. We instead consider the dual torus fibration $\pi:M \to B$ of the complement of the toric divisors in $X$, where $\bar{B}$ is the dual polytope of the toric manifold $X$. A natural formulation of homological mirror symmetry in this set-up is to define $Fuk(\bar{M})$ a variant of the Fukaya category and show the equivalence $D^b(coh(X)) \simeq D^b(Fuk(\bar{M}))$. As an intermediate step, we construct the category $Mo(P)$ of weighted Morse homotopy on $P:=\bar{B}$ as a natural generalization of the weighted Fukaya-Oh category proposed by Kontsevich-Soibelman. We then show a full subcategory $Mo_{\mathcal{E}}(P)$ of $Mo(P)$ generates $D^b(coh(X))$ for the cases $X$ is a complex projective space and their products.

Complex Manifolds

Abstract:Holomorphic Poisson structures arise naturally in the realm of generalized geometry. A holomorphic Poisson structure induces a deformation of the complex structure in a generalized sense, whose cohomology is obtained by twisting the Dolbeault @-operator by the holomorphic Poisson bivector field. Therefore, the cohomology space naturally appears as the limit of a spectral sequence of a double complex. The first sheet of this spectral sequence is simply the Dolbeault cohomology with coefficients in the exterior algebra of the holomorphic tangent bundle. We identify various necessary conditions on compact complex manifolds on which this spectral sequence degenerates on the level of the second sheet. The manifolds to our concern include all compact complex surfaces, Kähler manifolds, and nilmanifolds with abelian complex structures or parallelizable complex structures.

Abstract:Let M be a PL 2-manifold and X be a compact subpolyhedron of M and let E(X, M) denote the space of embeddings of X into M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we study an extension property of embeddings of X into M and show that the restriction map from the homeomorphism group of M to E(X, M) is a principal bundle. As an application we show that if M is a Euclidean PL 2-manifold and dim X >= 1 then the triple (E(X,M), E^LIP(X,M), E^PL(X, M)) is an (s,Sigma,sigma)-manifold, where E_K^LIP(X,M) and E_K^PL(X, M) denote the subspaces of Lipschitz and PL embeddings.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to build a theory of Stokes structures in an abstract infinity categorical context and to show that Stokes structures coming from flat bundles form a locally geometric derived stack of finite presentation. This generalizes existing geometricity results on Stokes structures in four different directions : our result applies in any dimension, infinity categorical coefficients are allowed, derived structures on moduli spaces are considered and more general spaces than those arising from flat bundles are permitted.

Birational Motivic Homotopy Theories and the Slice Filtration

Abstract:This paper is part of an endeavor to define an analogue of the slice filtration in the unstable motivic homotopy category. Our approach was inspired by the fact that the triangulated structures do not play a relevant role for the construction of birational homotopy categories as well as by the work of Kahn-Sujatha \cite{K-theory/0596} on birational motives, where the existence of a connection between the layers of the slice filtration and birational invariants is explicitly suggested. Our main result, shows that there is an equivalence of categories between the orthogonal components for the slice filtration and the birational motivic stable homotopy categories which are constructed in this paper. Relying on this equivalence, we are able to describe the slices for projective spaces (including $\mathbb P ^{\infty}$), Thom spaces and blow ups.

Abstract:The present work provides a mathematically rigorous account on super fiber bundle theory, connection forms, and their parallel transport, which ties together various approaches. We begin with a detailed introduction to super fiber bundles. We then introduce the concept of so-called relative supermanifolds as well as bundles and connections defined in these categories. Studying these objects turns out to be of utmost importance in order to, among other things, model anticommuting classical fermionic fields in mathematical physics. We then construct the parallel transport map corresponding to such connections and compare the results with those found by other means in the mathematical literature. Finally, applications of these methods to supergravity will be discussed, such as the Cartan geometric formulation of Poincaré supergravity as well as the description of Killing vector fields and Killing spinors of super Riemannian manifolds arising from metric reductive super Cartan geometries.

Abstract:We categorify the inclusion–exclusion principle for partially ordered topological spaces and schemes to a filtration on the derived category of sheaves. As a consequence, we obtain functorial spectral sequences that generalize the two spectral sequences of a stratified space and certain Vassiliev-type spectral sequences; we also obtain Euler characteristic analogs in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. As an application, we give an algebro-geometric proof of Vakil and Wood's homological stability conjecture for the space of smooth hypersurface sections of a smooth projective variety. In characteristic zero this conjecture was previously established by Aumonier via topological methods.

Abstract:We present a slight variation on a notion of weak \infty-groupoid introduced by Grothendieck in Pursuing Stacks and we study the homotopy theory of these \infty-groupoids. We prove that the obvious definition for homotopy groups of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids does not depend on any choice. This allows us to give equivalent characterizations of weak equivalences of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids, generalizing a well-known result for strict \infty-groupoids. On the other hand, given a model category M in which every object is fibrant, we construct, following Grothendieck, a fundamental \infty-groupoid functor \Pi_\infty from M to the category of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids. We show that if X is an object of M, then the homotopy groups of \Pi_\infty(X) and of X are canonically isomorphic. We deduce that the functor \Pi_\infty respects weak equivalences.

Abstract:Let $(X,\gamma)$ be a compact, irreducible Hermitian complex space of complex dimension $m$ and with $\mathrm{dim}(\mathrm{sing}(X))=0$. Let $(F,\tau)\rightarrow X$ be a Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle over $X$ and let us denote with $\overlineð_{F,m,\mathrm{abs}}$ the rolled-up operator of the maximal $L^2$-$\overline{\partial}$ complex of $F$-valued $(m,\bullet)$-forms. Let $\pi:M\rightarrow X$ be a resolution of singularities, $g$ a metric on $M$, $E:=\pi^*F$ and $\rho:=\pi^*\tau$. In this paper, under quite general assumptions on $\tau$, we prove the following equality of analytic $K$-homology classes $[\overlineð_{F,m,\mathrm{abs}}]=\pi_*[\overlineð_{E,m}]$, with $\overlineð_{E,m}$ the rolled-up operator of the $L^2$-$\overline{\partial}$ complex of $E$-valued $(m,\bullet)$-forms on $M$. Our proof is based on functional analytic techniques developed in \cite{KuSh} and provides an explicit homotopy between the even unbounded Fredholm modules induced by $\overlineð_{F,m,\mathrm{abs}}$ and $\overlineð_{E,m}$.

A decomposition theorem for the affine Springer fibers

Abstract:According to Laumon, an affine Springer fiber is homeomorphic to the universal abelian covering of the compactified Jacobian of a spectral curve. We construct equivariant deformations $f_{n}:\overline{\mathcal{P}}_{n}\to \mathcal{B}_{n}$ of the finite abelian coverings of this compactified Jacobian, and decompose the complex $Rf_{n,*}\mathbf{Q}_{\ell}$ as direct sum of intersection complexes. Pass to the limit, we obtain a similar expression for the homology of the affine Springer fibers. A quite surprising consequence is that we can reduce the homology to its $\Lambda^{0}$-invariant subspace. As an application, we get a sheaf-theoretic reformulation of the purity hypothesis of Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson. In an attempt to solve it, we propose a conjecture about the punctural weight of the intermediate extension of a smooth $\ell$-adic sheaf of pure weight.

Extending monoidal structures on fibered categories via embeddings

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a small category, and suppose that we are given a full subcategory $\mathcal{U}$ such that every object of $\mathcal{S}$ can be embedded into some object of $\mathcal{U}$ in the same way as every quasi-projective algebraic variety admits a closed embedding into a smooth one. We show that every monoidal structure on a given $\mathcal{S}$-fibered category satisfying certain natural conditions is completely determined by its restriction to $\mathcal{U}$; in fact, any monoidal structure over $\mathcal{U}$ satisfying similar natural conditions admits an essentially unique extension to the whole of $\mathcal{S}$. For instance, this allows one to recover the unit constraint on the classical constructible derived categories from the abelian categories of perverse sheaves. The same principle applies to morphisms of $\mathcal{S}$-fibered categories and monoidality thereof.

Abstract:Rips conjectured that a non-clementary word hyperbolic group is cohopfian if and only if it is freely indecomposable. The results and examples in this paper show that cohopficity phenomenon in the case of word hyperbolic group with torsion is much more complicated than the conjecture. In particular, the cohopficity of such groups is not determined by the numbers of their ends and the cohopficity is not preserved by finite index subgroups. Our results and examples arise from Kleinian groups. Orbifold structures and orbifold maps are the new tools in our discussions.
