Abstract:The main asteroid belt lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, but the region is not uniformly filled with asteroids. There are gaps, known as the Kirkwood gaps, in the asteroid distribution in distinct locations that are associated with orbital resonances with the giant planets; asteroids placed in these locations follow chaotic orbits and escape from the asteroid belt. Here we show that the observed distribution of main belt asteroids does not fill uniformly even those regions that are dynamically stable over the age of the solar system. We find a pattern of excess depletion of asteroids, particularly just outward of the Kirkwood Gaps associated with the 5:2, the 7:3, and the 2:1 jovian resonances. These features are not accounted for by planetary perturbations in the current structure of the solar system, but are consistent with dynamical ejection of asteroids by the sweeping of gravitational resonances during the migration of Jupiter and Saturn ~4 gigayears ago.

Abstract:It is generally recognized that main-belt asteroids (MBAs) and nuclei of extinct comets are the two main sources for the Near-Earth-Asteroids (NEAs). Theoretical studies of NEAs dynamics and numerical modelling of their orbital motions showed that the resonance mechanism for supplying NEAs is quite sufficient to sustain this population. Asteroid 1983 SA, also known as 3552 Don Quixote, is one of Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) and the most probable candidates for NEAs of the cometary origin. In this work, an investigation on the evolution of the orbit is done by using the SWIFT subroutine package, where the gravitational perturbations of eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are considered. Migration of asteroid 3552 Don Quixote from Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) to Jovian-crosser asteroid is found.

Migration of Bodies to the Earth from Different Distances from the Sun

Abstract:Migration of bodies under the gravitational influence of almost formed planets was studied, and probabilities of their collisions with the Earth and other terrestrial planets were calculated. Based on the probabilities, several conclusions on the accumulation of the terrestrial planets have been made. The outer layers of the Earth and Venus could accumulate similar planetesimals from different regions of the feeding zone of the terrestrial planets. The probabilities of collisions of bodies during their dynamical lifetimes with the Earth could be up to 0.001-0.01 for some initial semi-major axes between 3.2 and 3.6 AU, whereas such probabilities did not exceed 10^-5 at initial semi-major axes between 12 and 40 AU. The total mass of water delivered to the Earth from beyond Jupiter's orbit could exceed the mass of the Earth's oceans. The zone of the outer asteroid belt could be one of the sources of the late-heavy bombardment. The bodies that came from the zone of Jupiter and Saturn typically collided with the Earth and the Moon with velocities from 23 to 26 km/s and from 20 to 23 km/s, respectively.

Migration of Jupiter-family comets and resonant asteroids to near-Earth space

Abstract:We estimated the rate of comet and asteroid collisions with the terrestrial planets by calculating the orbits of 13000 Jupiter-crossing objects (JCOs) and 1300 resonant asteroids and computing the probabilities of collisions based on random-phase approximations and the orbital elements sampled with a 500 yr step. The Bulirsh-Stoer and a symplectic orbit integrator gave similar results for orbital evolution, but sometimes give different collision probabilities with the Sun. A small fraction of former JCOs reached orbits with aphelia inside Jupiter's orbit, and some reached Apollo orbits with semi-major axes less than 2 AU, Aten orbits, and inner-Earth orbits (with aphelia less than 0.983 AU) and remained there for millions of years. Though less than 0.1% of the total, these objects were responsible for most of the collision probability of former JCOs with Earth and Venus. Some Jupiter-family comets can reach inclinations i>90 deg. We conclude that a significant fraction of near-Earth objects could be extinct comets that came from the trans-Neptunian region.

Abstract:A review of the results on the migration of celestial bodies in the Solar System and in some exoplanetary systems is presented. Some problems of planet accumulation and migration of planetesimals, small bodies and dust in the forming and present Solar System are considered. It has been noted that the outer layers of the Earth and Venus could have accumulated similar planetesimals from different areas of the feeding zone of the terrestrial <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://planets.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> formation of the embryos of the Earth and the Moon from a common rarefied condensation with subsequent growth of the main mass of the embryo of the Moon near the Earth is also discussed. The influence of changes in the semimajor axis of Jupiter's orbit on the formation of the asteroid belt is discussed, as well as the influence of planetesimals from the feeding zone of the giant planets on the formation of bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune. The migration of bodies to the terrestrial planets from different distances from the Sun is considered. It is noted that bodies from the feeding zone of the giant planets and from the outer asteroid belt could deliver to the Earth a quantity of water comparable to the mass of water in the Earth's oceans. The migration of bodies ejected from the Earth is considered. The probabilities of collisions of dust particles with the Earth are usually an order of magnitude greater than the probabilities of collisions of their parent bodies with the Earth. The migration of planetesimals is considered in exoplanetary systems Proxima Centauri and TRAPPIST-1. The amount of water delivered to the inner planet Proxima Centauri b, may have been more than the amount delivered to the Earth. The outer layers of neighboring planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system may contain similar material if there were many planetesimals near their orbits during the late stages of planetary accumulation.

Abstract:We discuss problems of planetesimal migration in the emerging Solar System and exoplanetary systems. Protoplanetary disk evolution models and the formation of planets are considered. The formation of the Moon and of the asteroid and trans-Neptunian belts is studied. We show that Earth and Venus could acquire more than half of their mass in 5 million years, and their outer layers could accumulate the same material from different parts of the feeding zone of these planets. The migration of small bodies toward the terrestrial planets from various regions of the Solar System is simulated numerically. Based on these computations, we conclude that the mass of water delivered to the Earth by planetesimals, comets, and carbonaceous chondrite asteroids from beyond the ice line could be comparable to the mass of Earth's oceans. The processes of dust migration in the Solar System and sources of the zodiacal cloud are considered.

Abstract:The orbital migration of Jovian planets is believed to have played an important role in shaping the Kuiper Belt. We investigate the effects of the long time-scale (2 x 10(7) yr) migration of Jovian planets on the orbital evolution of massless test particles that are initially located beyond 28 AU. Because of the slowness of the migration, Neptune's mean motion resonances capture test particles very efficiently. Taking into account the stochastic behavior during the planetary migration and for proper parameter values, the resulting concentration of objects in the 3:2 resonance is prominent, while very few objects enter the 2:1 resonance, thus matching the observed Kuiper Belt objects very well. We also find that such a long time-scale migration is favorable for exciting the inclinations of the test particles, because it makes the secular resonance possible to operate during the migration. Our analyses show that the nu(8) secular resonance excites the eccentricities of some test particles, so decreasing their perihelion distances, leading to close encounters with Neptune, which can then pump the inclinations up to 20 degrees.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The asteroid belt is characterized by an extreme low total mass of material on dynamically excited orbits. The Nice model explains many peculiar qualities of the Solar system, including the belt’s excited state, by invoking an orbital instability between the outer planets. However, previous studies of the Nice model’s effect on the belt’s structure struggle to reproduce the innermost asteroids’ orbital inclination distribution. Here, we show how the final phase of giant planet migration sculpts the asteroid belt, in particular its inclination distribution. As interactions with leftover planetesimals cause Saturn to move away from Jupiter, its rate of orbital precession slows as the two planets’ mutual interactions weaken. When the planets approach their modern separation, where Jupiter completes just short of five orbits for every two of Saturn’s, Jupiter’s eccentric forcing on Saturn strengthens. We use numerical simulations to show that the absence of asteroids with orbits that precess between 24 and 28 arcsec yr−1 is related to the inclination problem. As Saturn’s precession speeds back up, high-inclination asteroids are excited on to planet crossing orbits and removed from the inner main belt. Through this process, the asteroid belt’s orbital structure is reshaped, leading to markedly improved simulation outcomes.

Collision probabilities of migrating small bodies and dust particles with planets

Abstract:Probabilities of collisions of migrating small bodies and dust particles produced by these bodies with planets were studied. Various Jupiter-family comets, Halley-type comets, long-period comets, trans-Neptunian objects, and asteroids were considered. The total probability of collisions of any considered body or particle with all planets did not exceed 0.2. The amount of water delivered from outside of Jupiter's orbit to the Earth during the formation of the giant planets could exceed the amount of water in Earth's oceans. The ratio of the mass of water delivered to a planet by Jupiter-family comets or Halley-type comets to the mass of the planet can be greater for Mars, Venus, and Mercury, than that for Earth.

Terrestrial Planet Formation in the Presence of Migrating Super-earths

Abstract:Super-Earths with orbital periods less than 100 days are extremely abundant around Sun-like stars. It is unlikely that these planets formed at their current locations. Rather, they likely formed at large distances from the star and subsequently migrated inward. Here we use N-body simulations to study the effect of super-Earths on the accretion of rocky planets. In our simulations, one or more super-Earths migrates inward through a disk of planetary embryos and planetesimals embedded in a gaseous disk. We tested a wide range of migration speeds and configurations. Fast-migrating super-Earths ($\tau_{mig} \sim$0.01-0.1 Myr) only have a modest effect on the protoplanetary embryos and planetesimals. Sufficient material survives to form rocky, Earth-like planets on orbits exterior to the super-Earths'. In contrast, slowly migrating super-Earths shepherd rocky material interior to their orbits and strongly deplete the terrestrial planet-forming zone. In this situation any Earth-sized planets in the habitable zone are extremely volatile-rich and are therefore probably not Earth-like.

Orbital Evolution of Planets Embedded in a Planetesimal Disk

Abstract:The existence of the Oort Comet Cloud, the Kuiper Belt, and plausible inefficiencies in planetary core formation, all suggest that there was once a residual planetesimal disk of mass 10-100 Earth-masses in the vicinity of the giant planets following their formation. Since removal of this disk requires an exchange of orbital energy and angular momentum with the planets, significant planetary migration can ensue. The planet migration phenomenon is examined numerically by evolving the orbits of the giant planets while they are embedded in a planetesimal disk having a mass of M_d=10 to 200 Earth-masses. We find that Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune evolve radially outwards as they scatter the planetesimals, while Jupiter's orbit shrinks as it ejects mass. Higher-mass disks result in more rapid and extensive planet migration. If orbit expansion and resonance trapping by Neptune is invoked to explain the eccentricities of Pluto and its cohort of Kuiper Belt Objects at Neptune's 3:2 mean-motion resonance, then our simulations suggest that a disk mass of order M_d~50 Earth-masses is required to expand Neptune's orbit by ~7 AU in order to pump up Plutino eccentricities to e~0.3. Such planet migration implies that the initial Solar System was more compact in the past, with the Jupiter-Neptune separation having been smaller by about 30%. The planetesimal disk is also the source of the Oort Cloud of comets. Using the results of our simulations together with a simple treatment of Oort Cloud dynamics, we estimate that ~12 Earth-masses of disk material was initially deposited in the Oort Cloud, of which ~4 Earth-masses will persist over the age of the Solar System. The majority of these comets originated from the Saturn-Neptune region of the solar nebula.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In this work, we investigate the possibility of transporting material to the NEO region via the 8:3 MMR with Jupiter, potentially even material released from the dwarf planet Ceres. By applying the FLI map method to the 8:3 MMR region in the orbital plane of Ceres, we were able to distinguish between stable and unstable orbits. Subsequently, based on the FLI maps (for mean anomaly M = 60° and also M = 30°), 500 of the most stable and 500 of the most unstable particles were integrated for $15\, \mathrm{Myr}$ for each map. Long-term integration in the case of M = 60° showed that most of the stable particles evolved, in general, in uneventful ways with only 0.8 per cent of particles reaching the limit of q ≤ 1.3 au . However, in the case of M = 30°, a stable evolution was not confirmed. Over 40 per cent of particles reached orbits with q ≤ 1.3 au and numerous particles were ejected to hyperbolic orbits or orbits with a > 100 au. The results for stable particles indicate that short-term FLI maps are more suitable for finding chaotic orbits, than for detecting the stable ones. A rough estimate shows that it is possible for material released from Ceres to get to the region of 8:3 MMR with Jupiter. A long-term integration of unstable particles in both cases showed that transportation of material via 8:3 MMR close to the Earth is possible.

Abstract:It is now accepted that the Solar system's youth was a dynamic and chaotic time. The giant planets migrated significant distances to reach their current locations, and evidence of that migration's influence on the Solar system abounds. That migration's pace, and the distance over which it occurred, is still heavily debated. Some models feature systems in which the giant planets were initially in an extremely compact configuration, in which Uranus and Neptune are chaotically scattered into the outer Solar system. Others feature architectures that were initially more relaxed, and smoother, more sedate migration. To determine which of these scenarios best represents the formation of our Solar system, we must turn to the structure of the system's small body populations, in which the scars of that migration are still clearly visible. We present the first results of a program investigating the effect of giant planet migration on the reservoirs of small bodies that existed at that time. As the planets migrate, they stir these reservoirs, scattering vast numbers of small bodies onto dynamically unstable orbits in the outer Solar system. The great majority of those bodies are rapidly removed from the system, through collisions and ejections, but a small number become captured as planetary Trojans or irregular satellites. Others are driven by the migration, leading to a significant sculpting of the asteroid belt and trans-Neptunian region. The capture and retention efficiencies to these stable reservoirs depend on the particular migration scenario used. Advocates of chaotic migration from an initially compact scenario argue that smoother, more sedate migration cannot explain the observed populations of Trojans and irregular satellites. Our results draw a strikingly different picture, revealing that such smooth migration is perfectly capable of reproducing the observed populations.

The Empty Primordial Asteroid Belt

Abstract:The asteroid belt contains less than a thousandth of Earth's mass and is radially segregated, with S-types dominating the inner belt and C-types the outer belt. It is generally assumed that the belt formed with far more mass and was later strongly depleted. Here we show that the present-day asteroid belt is consistent with having formed empty, without any planetesimals between Mars and Jupiter's present-day orbits. This is consistent with models in which drifting dust is concentrated into an isolated annulus of terrestrial planetesimals. Gravitational scattering during terrestrial planet formation causes radial spreading, transporting planetesimals from inside 1-1.5 AU out to the belt. Several times the total current mass in S-types is implanted, with a preference for the inner main belt. C-types are implanted from the outside, as the giant planets' gas accretion destabilizes nearby planetesimals and injects a fraction into the asteroid belt, preferentially in the outer main belt. These implantation mechanisms are simple byproducts of terrestrial- and giant planet formation. The asteroid belt may thus represent a repository for planetary leftovers that accreted across the Solar System but not in the belt itself.
A Collision Mechanism for the Removal of Earth's Trojan Asteroids

Abstract:Due to their strong resonances with their host planet, Trojan asteroids can remain in stable orbits for billions of years. As a result, they are powerful probes for constraining the dynamical and chemical history of the solar system. Although we have detected thousands of Jupiter Trojans and dozens of Neptune Trojans, there are currently no known long-term stable Earth Trojans. Dynamical simulations show that the parameter space for stable Earth Trojans in substantial, so their apparent absence poses a mystery. This work uses a large ensemble of N-body simulations to explore how the Trojan population dynamically responds if Earth suffers large collisions, such as those thought to have occurred to form the Moon and/or to have given Earth its Late Veneer. We show that such collisions can be highly disruptive to the primordial Trojan population, and could have eliminated it altogether. More specifically, if Earth acquired the final 1\% of its mass through ${\cal O}(10)$ collisions, then only $\sim1\%$ of the previously bound Trojan population would remain.

Astronomical engineering: a strategy for modifying planetary orbits

Abstract:The Sun's gradual brightening will seriously compromise the Earth's biosphere within ~ 1E9 years. If Earth's orbit migrates outward, however, the biosphere could remain intact over the entire main-sequence lifetime of the Sun. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of engineering such a migration over a long time period. The basic mechanism uses gravitational assists to (in effect) transfer orbital energy from Jupiter to the Earth, and thereby enlarges the orbital radius of Earth. This transfer is accomplished by a suitable intermediate body, either a Kuiper Belt object or a main belt asteroid. The object first encounters Earth during an inward pass on its initial highly elliptical orbit of large (~ 300 AU) semimajor axis. The encounter transfers energy from the object to the Earth in standard gravity-assist fashion by passing close to the leading limb of the planet. The resulting outbound trajectory of the object must cross the orbit of Jupiter; with proper timing, the outbound object encounters Jupiter and picks up the energy it lost to Earth. With small corrections to the trajectory, or additional planetary encounters (e.g., with Saturn), the object can repeat this process over many encounters. To maintain its present flux of solar energy, the Earth must experience roughly one encounter every 6000 years (for an object mass of 1E22 g). We develop the details of this scheme and discuss its ramifications.

Past the outer rim, into the unknown: structures beyond the Kuiper Cliff

Abstract:Although the present-day orbital distribution of minor bodies that go around the Sun between the orbit of Neptune and the Kuiper Cliff is well understood, past ~50 au from the Sun, our vision gets blurred as objects become fainter and fainter and their orbital periods span several centuries. Deep imaging using the largest telescopes can overcome the first issue but the problems derived from the second one are better addressed using data analysis techniques. Here, we make use of the heliocentric range and range-rate of the known Kuiper belt objects and their uncertainties to identify structures in orbital parameter space beyond the Kuiper Cliff. The distribution in heliocentric range there closely resembles that of the outer main asteroid belt with a gap at 70 au that may signal the existence of a dynamical analogue of the Jupiter family comets. Outliers in the distribution of mutual nodal distances suggest that a massive perturber is present beyond the heliopause.

Abstract:The Edgeworth-Kuiper belt encodes the dynamical history of the outer solar system. Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) bear witness to coagulation physics, the evolution of planetary orbits, and external perturbations from the solar neighborhood. We critically review the present-day belt's observed properties and the theories designed to explain them. Theories are organized according to a possible time-line of events. In chronological order, epochs described include (1) coagulation of KBOs in a dynamically cold disk, (2) formation of binary KBOs by fragmentary collisions and gravitational captures, (3) stirring of KBOs by Neptune-mass planets (``oligarchs''), (4) eviction of excess oligarchs, (5) continued stirring of KBOs by remaining planets whose orbits circularize by dynamical friction, (6) planetary migration and capture of Resonant KBOs, (7) creation of the inner Oort cloud by passing stars in an open stellar cluster, and (8) collisional comminution of the smallest KBOs. Recent work underscores how small, collisional, primordial planetesimals having low velocity dispersion permit the rapid assembly of ~5 Neptune-mass oligarchs at distances of 15-25 AU. We explore the consequences of such a picture. We propose that Neptune-mass planets whose orbits cross into the Kuiper belt for up to ~20 Myr help generate the high-perihelion members of the hot Classical disk and Scattered belt. By contrast, raising perihelia by sweeping secular resonances during Neptune's migration might fill these reservoirs too inefficiently when account is made of how little primordial mass might reside in bodies having sizes of order 100 km. These and other frontier issues in trans-Neptunian space are discussed quantitatively.
