Abstract:Most textbooks introduce the concept of spin by presenting the Stern-Gerlach experiment with the aid of Newtonian atomic trajectories. However, to understand how both spatial and spin degrees of freedom evolve over time and how the latter influence experimental outcomes, it is essential to employ a quantum approach. In this paper, we offer two simple methods, the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula and the direct integration of the Schrödinger equation in an interaction picture, to determine the corresponding evolution operator. We not only provide an interpretation of the individual terms within this operator but also establish connections with semiclassical calculations, when feasible. Moreover, we compute the wave function and touch upon the concept of position-spin entanglement to illustrate how a full quantum description of the Stern-Gerlach experiment can open doors to topics like quantum measurement and nonlocality.

Quantum Dynamical Simulation of a Transversal Stern-Gerlach Interferometer

Abstract:Originally conceived as a thought experiment, an apparatus consisting of two Stern–Gerlach apparatuses joined in an inverted manner touched on the fundamental question of the reversibility of evolution in quantum mechanics. Theoretical analysis showed that uniting the two partial beams requires an extreme level of experimental control, making the proposal in its original form unrealizable in practice. In this work, we revisit the above question in a numerical study concerning the possibility of partial-beam recombination in a spin-coherent manner. Using the Suzuki–Trotter numerical method of wave propagation and a configurable, approximation-free magnetic field, a simulation of a transversal Stern–Gerlach interferometer under ideal conditions is performed. The result confirms what has long been hinted at by theoretical analyses: the transversal Stern–Gerlach interferometer quantum dynamics is fundamentally irreversible even when perfect control of the associated magnetic fields and beams is assumed.

Abstract:The multi-stage Stern$\unicode{x2013}$Gerlach experiment conducted by Frisch and Segrè includes two cascaded quantum measurements with a nonadiabatic flipper in between. The Frisch and Segrè experiment has been modeled analytically by Majorana without the nuclear effect and subsequently revised by Rabi with the hyperfine interaction. However, the theoretical predictions do not match the experimental observation accurately. Here, we numerically solve the standard quantum mechanical model, via the von Neumann equation, including the hyperfine interaction for the time evolution of the spin. Thus far, the coefficients of determination from the standard quantum mechanical model without using free parameters are still low, indicating a mismatch between the theory and the experiment. Non-standard variants that improve the match are explored for discussion.

Abstract:For nearly one hundred years most quantum-mechanics texts have depicted a continuous, spin-direction superposition of the wavefunction of the silver atom traversing a Stern-Gerlach magnet. But there are sound scientific arguments which deny that understanding. Schrodinger's equation for that continuous wavefuction development cannot describe the transfer of energy from the magnetic field to that atom. Modern micro-fabrication techniques now make it possible to implement a simple, accessible experiment testing whether a spin superposition does continue in the magnet. Because the Stern-Gerlach experiment is the prototype for quantum measurement, that observation is crucial to implementing a realistic quantum theory of measurement.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive simulation study of the Newtonian and quantum model of a Stern–Gerlach experiment with cold neutrons. By solving Newton's equation of motion and the time-dependent Pauli equation for a wide range of uniform magnetic field strengths, we scrutinize the role of the latter for drawing the conclusion that the magnetic moment of the neutron is quantized. We then demonstrate that a marginal modification of the Newtonian model suffices to construct, without invoking any concept of quantum theory, an event-based subquantum model that eliminates the shortcomings of the classical model and yields results that are in qualitative agreement with experiment and quantum theory. In this event-by-event model, the intrinsic angular momentum can take any value on the sphere, yet, for a sufficiently strong uniform magnetic field, the particle beam splits in two, exactly as in experiment and in concert with quantum theory.

Abstract:Following a comprehensive analysis of the historical literature, we model the geometry of the Stern$\unicode{x2013}$Gerlach experiment to numerically calculate the magnetic field using the finite-element method. Using this calculated field and Monte Carlo methods, the atomic translational dynamics are simulated to produce the well-known quantized end-pattern with matching dimensions. The finite-element method used provides the most accurate description of the Stern$\unicode{x2013}$Gerlach magnetic field and end-pattern in the literature, matching the historically reported values and figures.

Abstract:The discussion of the recently derived quantum Hamilton equations for a spinning particle is extended to spin measurement in a Stern–Gerlach experiment. We show that this theory predicts a continuously changing orientation of the particles magnetic moment over the course of its motion across the Stern–Gerlach apparatus. The final measurement results agree with experiment and with predictions of the Pauli equation. Furthermore, the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen–Bohm thought experiment is investigated, and the violation of Bells's inequalities is reproduced within this stochastic mechanics approach. The origin of the violation of Bell's inequalities is traced to the the non-local nature of the velocity fields for an entangled state in the stochastic formalism, which is a result of a non-separable probability distribution of the considered particles.

Abstract:The one-century-old Stern-Gerlach setup is paradigmatic for a quantum measurement. We visualize the electron trajectories following the Bohmian zig-zag dynamics. This dynamics was developed in order to deal with the fundamentally massless nature of particles (with mass emerging from the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism). The corresponding trajectories exhibit a stochastic zig-zagging, as the result of the coupling between left- and right-handed chiral Weyl states. This zig-zagging persists in the nonrelativistic limit, which will be considered here, and which is described by the Pauli equation for a nonuniform external magnetic field. Our results clarify the different meanings of ``spin'' as a property of the wave function and as a random variable in the Stern-Gerlach setup, and they illustrate the notion of effective collapse. We also examine the case of an EPR-pair. By letting one of the entangled particles pass through a Stern-Gerlach device, the nonlocal influence (action-at-a-distance) on the other particle is manifest in its trajectory, e.g. by initiating its zig-zagging.

Abstract:We describe an interactive computer program that simulates Stern-Gerlach measurements on spin-1/2 and spin-1 particles. The user can design and run experiments involving successive spin measurements, illustrating incompatible observables, interference, and time evolution. The program can be used by students at a variety of levels, from non-science majors in a general interest course to physics majors in an upper-level quantum mechanics course. We give suggested homework exercises using the program at various levels.

Abstract:Explaining the behavior of macroscopic objects from the point of view of the quantum paradigm has challenged the scientific community for a century today. A mechanism of gravitational self-interaction, governed by the so-called Schroedinger-Newton equation, is among the proposals that aim to shed some light on it. Despite all efforts, this mechanism has been proven difficult to probe. Here, we consider a simple Stern-Gerlach-like experiment to try it out. The Schroedinger-Newton equation can be analytically solved under certain proper conditions, and a dephasing effect induced by the gravitational self-interacting potential can be calculated.

Abstract:Quantum sensors based on light-pulse atom interferometers allow for high-precision measurements of inertial and electromagnetic forces such as the accurate determination of fundamental constants as the fine structure constant or testing foundational laws of modern physics as the equivalence principle. These schemes unfold their full performance when large interrogation times and/or large momentum transfer can be implemented. In this article, we demonstrate how precision interferometry can benefit from the use of Bose-Einstein condensed sources when the state of the art is challenged. We contrast systematic and statistical effects induced by Bose-Einstein condensed sources with thermal sources in three exemplary science cases of Earth- and space-based sensors.
Identifying the Stern-Gerlach force of classical electron dynamics

Abstract:Different classical theories are commonly applied in various branches of physics to describe the relativistic dynamics of electrons by coupled equations for the orbital motion and spin precession. Exemplarily, we benchmark the Frenkel model and the classical Foldy-Wouthuysen model with spin-dependent forces (Stern-Gerlach forces) to the quantum dynamics as predicted by the Dirac equation. Both classical theories can lead to different or even contradicting predictions how the Stern-Gerlach forces modify the electron's orbital motion, when the electron moves in strong electromagnetic field configurations of emerging high-intensity laser facilities. In this way, one may evaluate the validity and identify the limits of these classical theories via a comparison with possible experiments to provide a proper description of spin-induced dynamics. Our results indicate that the Foldy-Wouhuysen model is qualitatively in better agreement with the Dirac theory than the widely used Frenkel model.

Abstract:The Stern-Gerlach experiment has played a central role in the discovery of spin angular momentum. It can also play a pivotal role in teaching the formalism of quantum mechanics using a concrete example involving a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Using this context, students can learn about how to prepare a specific quantum state starting from an arbitrary state, issues related to the time evolution of the wave function, and quantum measurement. It can also be exploited to teach students about the distinction between the physical space where one performs the experiment and the Hilbert space where the state of the system lies and how the information about the state of the system in the Hilbert space can be exploited to interpret the possible outcomes of the experiment in the physical space. Students can learn the advantages of choosing an appropriate basis to make suitable predictions about the outcomes of experiments with different arrangements of Stern-Gerlach devices. This experiment can also help students understand that an ensemble of identically prepared systems, e.g., one in a linear superposition of two stationary states, is not the same as a mixture, e.g., in which half of the systems are in one stationary state and the other half are in the other stationary state. Here, we discuss investigation of students' difficulties about the Stern-Gerlach experiment by giving written tests and interviewing advanced undergraduate and graduate students in quantum mechanics courses. We also discuss preliminary data from two quantum mechanics courses that suggest that a Quantum Interactive Learning Tutorial (QuILT) related to the Stern-Gerlach experiment is helpful in improving students' understanding of these concepts.

Abstract:Spin is an important quantum degree of freedom in relativistic quantum information theory. This paper provides a first-principles derivation of the observable corresponding to a Stern-Gerlach measurement with relativistic particle velocity. The specific mathematical form of the Stern-Gerlach operator is established using the transformation properties of the electromagnetic field. To confirm that this is indeed the correct operator we provide a detailed analysis of the Stern-Gerlach measurement process. We do this by applying a WKB approximation to the minimally coupled Dirac equation describing an interaction between a massive fermion and an electromagnetic field. Making use of the superposition principle we show that the +1 and -1 spin eigenstates of the proposed spin operator are split into separate packets due to the inhomogeneity of the Stern-Gerlach magnetic field. The operator we obtain is dependent on the momentum between particle and Stern-Gerlach apparatus, and is mathematically distinct from two other commonly used operators. The consequences for quantum tomography are considered.

Abstract:We propose a method to perform precision measurements of the interaction parameters in systems of N ultra-cold spin 1/2 atoms. The spectroscopy is realized by first creating a coherent spin superposition of the two relevant internal states of each atom and then letting the atoms evolve under a squeezing Hamiltonian. The non-linear nature of the Hamiltonian decreases the fundamental limit imposed by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to N^(-2), a factor of N smaller than the fundamental limit achievable with non-interacting atoms. We study the effect of decoherence and show that even with decoherence, entangled states can outperform the signal to noise limit of non-entangled states. We present two possible experimental implementations of the method using Bose-Einstein spinor condensates and fermionic atoms loaded in optical lattices and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract:Thermodynamic probes can be used to deduce microscopic internal dynamics of nanoscale quantum systems. Several direct entropy measurement protocols based on charge transport measurements have been proposed and experimentally applied to single-electron devices. To date, these methods have relied on (quasi-)equilibrium conditions between the nanoscale quantum system and its environment, which constitutes only a small subset of the experimental conditions available. In this paper, we establish a thermodynamic analysis method based on stochastic thermodynamics, that is valid far from equilibrium conditions, is applicable to a broad range of single-electron devices and allows us to find the difference in entropy between the charge states of the nanodevice, as well as a characteristic of any selection rules governing electron transfers. We apply this non-equilibrium entropy measurement protocol to a single-molecule device in which the internal dynamics can be described by a two-site Hubbard model.
