Abstract:This thesis delves into the $AdS_4/CFT_3$ correspondence (M-theory on $AdS_4 \times S^7 / \mathbb{Z}_k$ $\leftrightarrow$ ABJM theory) in a comprehensive and detailed manner. The ABJM theory i.e. $\mathcal{N} = 6$ $U(N)_k \times U(N)_{-k}$ Chern-Simons matter theory, is presented in $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superspace, with explicit demonstration of R-symmetry invariance. The associated brane configuration in type IIB string theory is examined, and the low-energy effective field content is shown to align with that of the ABJM theory, by considering string modes and boundary conditions in a new intuitive perspective on brane intersection boundaries and staged compactification. The consequent lift to M-theory, along with the resulting geometry and its Killing spinors in 11D supergravity, is thoroughly analyzed. The $AdS_4/CFT_3$ statement is then articulated, and its implications are explored, with a focus on the computational machinery of Witten diagrams, first in position space and subsequently in the more convenient Mellin space. The thesis culminates with the computation of the four-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet superconformal primary, incorporating contributions from additional short multiplets involving Spin-3 and Spin-4 exchanges not previously considered in the literature. These computations hold significant practical implications for the M-theory S-matrix. As an overall remark, the streamlined nature of this comprehensive work also aims to inspire fresh insights from $AdS_4/CFT_3$, a duality that probes the non-perturbative aspects of M-theory; a theory that, if it exists, is a promising candidate for the theory of everything, yet remains shrouded in Mystery with much still unknown.

Twisted Fibrations in M/F-theory

Abstract:In this work we investigate 5-dimensional theories obtained from M-theory on genus one fibered threefolds which exhibit twisted algebras in their fibers. We provide a base-independent algebraic description of the threefolds and compute light 5D BPS states charged under finite sub-algebras of the twisted algebras. We further construct the Jacobian fibrations that are associated to 6-dimensional F-theory lifts, where the twisted algebra is absent. These 6/5-dimensional theories are compared via twisted circle reductions of F-theory to M-theory. In the 5-dimensional theories we discuss several geometric transitions that connect twisted with untwisted fibrations. We present detailed discussions of $\mathfrak{e}_6^{(2)}, \mathfrak{so}_8^{(3)}$ and $\mathfrak{su}_3^{(2)}$ twisted fibers and provide several explicit example threefolds via toric constructions. Finally, limits are considered in which gravity is decoupled, including Little String Theories for which we match 2-group symmetries across twisted T-dual theories.

Abstract:As the necessary background to construct from the aspect of Grothendieck's Algebraic Geometry dynamical fermionic D3-branes along the line of Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz superstrings in string theory, three pieces of the building blocks are given in the current notes:(1) basic -algebrogeometric foundations of , supersymmetry and , superspace in physics, with emphasis on the partial -ring structure on the function ring of the superspace,(2) the notion of SUSY-rep compatible hybrid connections on bundles over the superspace to address connections on the Chan-Paton bundle on the world-volume of a fermionic D3-brane,(3) the notion of -chiral maps from a Azumaya/matrix superspace with a fundamental module with a SUSY-rep compatible hybrid connection to a complex manifold as a model for a dynamical D3-branes moving in a target space (-time). Some test computations related to the construction of a supersymmetric action functional for SUSY-rep compatible are given in the end, whose further study is the focus of a separate work. The current work is a sequel to D (11.4. 1)(arXiv: 1709.08927 [math. DG]) and D (11.2)(arXiv: 1412.0771 [hep-th]) and is the first step in the supersymmetric generalization, in the case of D3-branes, of the standard action functional for D-branes constructed in D (13.3)(arXiv: 1704.03237 [hep-th]).
Moduli Stabilization and Stability in Type II/F-theory flux compactifications

Abstract:In this thesis we study String Theory compactifications to four dimensions focusing on the moduli stabilization process and the associated vacua structure in various frameworks, from Type IIA to F-theory, interpreting the results in the context of the Swampland Program. More specifically, we generalize the bilinear formalism of the scalar potential to include the contributions of geometric fluxes, which we use to perform a systematic search of vacua. We also consider the 10d uplift of AdS4 vacua arising from the 4d massive Type IIA effective theory with only RR and NSNS fluxes. Using the language of SU(3)xSU(3) structures and performing an expansion around the smearing approximation in powers of the string coupling, we study the stability of the SUSY solution and its non-SUSY partner. We contrast the results with the Weak Gravity Conjecture and the AdS instability conjecture in toroidal orbifold examples and find that some non-SUSY cases are in tension with the predictions of those conjectures. From the F-theory perspective, we study moduli stabilization in the complex structure sector of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds in the Large Complex Structure limit. Using homological mirror symmetry, we replicate the analysis for the Type IIA case and give a bilinear expression for the scalar potential, allowing for a detailed study of the vacua structure. We find two distinct families of flux configurations compatible with the tadpole constraints that enable full moduli stabilization. We thoroughly examine the most generic one in the Type IIB limit, where the superpotential is also quadratic and polynomial corrections can be considered at all orders. Finally, we show that at this level of approximation supersymmetric SUSY vacua always contain flat directions. We conclude with a summary of the results and some comments about open questions and future lines of research.

The dynamics on the three-dimensional boundary of the 4D Topological BF model

Abstract:In this thesis I studied the Symanzik's method for the introduction of the boundary in a field theory and, specifically, I applied this method to three Topological Field Theories of the Shwartz type: the non-abelian Chern-Simons model, the non-abelian three-dimensional BF theory and its abelian four-dimensional version. This thesis is organized into three chapters. In Chapter 1 the introduction of the boundary in the non-abelian CS model is illustrated. The purpose of this chapter is to describe some techniques known in literature, which are largely used in the following chapters. In Chapter 2 the three-dimensional non-abelian BF theory with a boundary is analyzed. The most interesting result of this chapter is the interpretation of the boundary term of the Ward Identities as the gauge-fixing for the residual gauge invariance of the theory on the boundary. In Chapter 3 the techniques developed in the previous chapters are applied to the abelian BF theory in four space-time dimensions with a boundary. The most interesting result of this chapter, (and of the entire thesis), is the characterization of the boundary dynamics in terms of canonical commutation relations generated by the algebra of local boundary observables, which exists due to the residual gauge invariance of the bulk theory. The results obtained suggest that this model can be considered as an effective theory for the (3+1)D Topological Insulators.

The M-Theory Three-Form and Singular Geometries

Abstract:While M- and F-theory compactifications describe a much larger class of vacua than perturbative string compactifications, they typically need singularities to generate non-abelian gauge fields and charged matter. The physical explanation involves M2-branes wrapped on vanishing cycles. Here we seek an alternative explanation that could address outstanding issues such as the description of nilpotent branches, stability walls, frozen singularities and so forth. To this end we use a model in which the three-form is related to the Chern-Simons form of a bundle. The model has a one-form non-abelian gauge symmetry which normally eliminates all the degrees of freedom associated to the bundle. However by restricting the transformations to preserve the bundle along the vanishing cycles, we may get new degrees of freedom associated to singularities, without appealing to wrapped M2-branes. The analysis can be simplified by gauge-fixing the one-form symmetry using higher-dimensional instanton equations. We explain how this mechanism leads to the natural emergence of phenomena such as enhanced ADE gauge symmetries, nilpotent branches, charged matter fields and their holomorphic couplings.

Non-perturbative Studies of Non-conformal Field Theories

Abstract:Many of the exciting features of the Standard Model of the elementary particles are inherently non-perturbative. A theoretical understanding of many physics aspects beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles also requires a non-perturbative framework. One such framework involves discretizing quantum field theories on a spacetime lattice. We can use this lattice regularization method to study supersymmetric versions of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this thesis, we discuss the spacetime lattice setup, and with the examples of different models, we will see the numerical capability of this tool in exploring field theory regimes that are not accessible through perturbation theory. We use an efficient version of the Monte Carlo algorithm to update the field configurations in the path integral and eventually reach the equilibrium configurations. A version of the gauge/gravity conjecture connects weakly coupled gravitational theories to strongly coupled field theories. We will mainly focus on the non-conformal analogs of the conjecture in lower dimensions. This thesis mainly discusses the numerical simulation results of two lower-dimensional models. One is the bosonic version of the BMN matrix quantum mechanics and the other is a two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory containing four supersymmetries. Our numerical results suggest that the phase diagram of bosonic BMN model smoothly interpolates between the bosonic BFSS and the gauged Gaussian model, with first-order deconfinement phase transition at all couplings. Our simulation results for two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory that contains four supersymmetries show that this model admits a deconfinement phase transition in the limit of a large number of colors. We also show that the nature of the transition looks similar to its maximally supersymmetric cousin in the weak coupling regime.

The dynamics of three-forms in thick branes

Abstract:In this work, we investigate thick brane models with a single three-form field. We find novel solutions for thick braneworlds where only three-forms exist and interact gravitationally in the bulk, both with and without matter fields. We use an additional scalar field as proxy for the matter fields. As an initial study, we consider the results here in contrast to the single scalar field thick braneworld case. The properties of the specific three-form parameterisation limits the freedom we have to choose the form of the warp factor, leading to a closed system of equations with nontrivial yet unstable solutions. The stability of the gravitational sector for thick brane three-forms is investigated and the models are shown to be unstable against small perturbations of the metric, further indicating that three-forms cannot exist stably in thick braneworld settings.

Abstract:This document is a thesis presented for the ``Habilitation à diriger des recherches''. The first chapter provides some background and sketch the story of the classical Schur-Weyl duality and its quantum analogue involving the Hecke algebra. Quantum groups and their centralisers are discussed along with their connections with the braid group, the Yang-Baxter equation and the construction of link invariants. A quick review of several related notions of Hecke algebras concludes the first chapter. The second chapter presents the fused Hecke algebras and an application to the construction of solutions for the Yang-Baxter equation. The third chapter summarises recent works on diagonal centralisers of Lie algebras, and gives an application to the study of the missing label for sl(3). The last chapter discusses algebraic results on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras and their applications to the study of link invariants.

Five Dimensional Dynamical Triangulations

Abstract:The dynamical triangulations approach to quantum gravity is investigated in detail for the first time in five dimensions. In this case, the most general action that is linear in components of the f-vector has three terms. It was suspected that the corresponding space of couplings would yield a rich phase structure. This work is primarily motivated by the hope that this new viewpoint will lead to a deeper understanding of dynamical triangulations in general. Ultimately, this research programme may give a better insight into the potential application of dynamical triangulations to quantum gravity. This thesis serves as an exploratory study of this uncharted territory. The five dimensional (k,l) moves used in the Monte Carlo algorithm are proven to be ergodic in the space of combinatorially equivalent simplicial 5-manifolds. A statement is reached regarding the possible existence of an exponential upper bound on the number of combinatorially equivalent triangulations of the 5-sphere. Monte Carlo simulations reveal non-trivial phase structure which is analysed in some detail. Further investigations deal with the geometric and fractal nature of triangulations. This is followed by a characterisation of the weak coupling limit in terms of stacked spheres. Simple graph theory arguments are used to reproduce and generalise a well-known result in combinatorial topology. Finally, a comprehensive study of singular structures in dynamical triangulations is presented. It includes a new understanding of their existence, which appears to be consistent with the non-existence of singular vertices in three dimensions. The thesis is concluded with an overview of results, general discussion and suggestions for future work.

Abstract:This thesis studies the Bar-Natan skein module of the solid torus with a particular boundary curve system, and in particular a diagrammatic presentation of it due to Russell. This module has deep connections to topology and categorification: it is isomorphic to both the total homology of the (n,n)-Springer variety and the 0th Hochschild homology of the Khovanov arc ring H^n. We can also view the Bar-Natan--Russell skein module from a representation-theoretic viewpoint as an extension of the Frenkel--Khovanov graphical description of the Lusztig dual canonical basis of the nth tensor power of the fundamental U_q(sl_2)-representation. One of our primary results is to extend a dualization construction of Khovanov using Jones--Wenzl projectors from the Lusztig basis to the Russell basis. We also construct and explore several deformations of the Russell skein module. One deformation is a quantum deformation that arises from embedding the Russell skein module in a space that obeys Kauffman--Lins diagrammatic relations. Our quantum version recovers the original Russell space when q is specialized to -1 and carries a natural braid group action that recovers the symmetric group action of Russell and Tymoczko. We also present an equivariant deformation that arises from replacing the TQFT algebra A used in the construction of the rings H^n by the equivariant homology of the two-sphere with the standard action of U(2) and taking the 0th Hochschild homology of the resulting deformed arc rings. We show that the equivariant deformation has the expected rank. Finally, we consider the Khovanov two-functor F from the category of tangles. We show that it induces a surjection from the space of cobordisms of planar (2m, 2n)-tangles to the space of (H^m, H^n)-bimodule homomorphisms and give an explicit description of the kernel. We use our result to introduce a new quotient of the Russell skein module.

Abstract:This thesis presents several new insights on the interface between mathematics and theoretical physics, with a central role for fermions on Riemann surfaces. First of all, the duality between Vafa-Witten theory and WZW models is embedded into string theory. Secondly, this model is generalized to a web of dualities connecting topological string theory and N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories to a configuration of D-branes that intersect over a Riemann surface. This description yields a new perspective on topological string theory in terms of a KP integrable system based on a quantum curve. Thirdly, this thesis describes a geometric analysis of wall-crossing in N=4 string theory. And lastly, it offers a novel approach to construct metastable vacua in type IIB string theory.

T-dual branes on hyperkähler manifolds

Abstract:This submission is a PhD dissertation. Kapustin and Witten conjectured that there is a mirror symmetry relation between the hyperkähler structures on certain Higgs bundle moduli spaces. As a consequence, they conjecture an equivalence between categories of BBB and BAA-branes. At the classical level, this mirror symmetry is given by T-duality between semi-flat hyperkähler structures on algebraic integrable systems. In this thesis, we investigate the T-duality relation between hyperkähler structures and the corresponding branes on affine torus bundles. We use the techniques of generalized geometry to show that semi-flat hyperkähler structures are T-dual on algebraic integrable systems. We also describe T-duality for generalized branes. Motivated by Fourier-Mukai transform we upgrade the T-duality between generalized branes to T-duality of submanifolds endowed with U(1)-bundles and connections. This T-duality in the appropriate context specializes to T-duality between BBB and BAA-branes.

Abstract:The first part of this thesis focuses on the Weyl-covariant nature of holography. We generalize the Fefferman-Graham (FG) ambient construction for conformal geometry to a corresponding construction for Weyl geometry. Through the Weyl-ambient construction, we investigate Weyl-covariant quantities on the Weyl manifold and define Weyl-obstruction tensors. We show that Weyl-obstruction tensors appear as poles in the Fefferman-Graham expansion of the ALAdS bulk metric for even boundary dimensions. Under holographic renormalization in the Weyl-Fefferman-Graham gauge, we compute the Weyl anomaly of the boundary theory in multiple dimensions and demonstrate that Weyl-obstruction tensors can be used as the building blocks for the Weyl anomaly of the dual quantum field theory (QFT). The holographic calculation with a background Weyl geometry also suggests an underlying geometric interpretation of the Weyl anomaly. The second part of this thesis is devoted to understanding the geometric nature of the BRST formalism and quantum anomalies. Using the language of Lie algebroids, the BRST complex can be encoded in the exterior algebra of an Atiyah Lie algebroid derived from the principal bundle of the gauge theory. We showed that the cohomology of an Atiyah Lie algebroid in a trivialization gives rise to the BRST cohomology. We then apply the Lie algebroid cohomology in studying quantum anomalies and demonstrate the computation for chiral and Lorentz-Weyl anomalies. In particular, we pay close attention to the fact that the geometric intuition afforded by the Lie algebroid (which was absent in the traditional BRST complex) provides hints of a deeper picture that simultaneously geometrizes the consistent and covariant forms of the anomaly. In the algebroid construction, the difference between the consistent and covariant anomalies is simply a different choice of basis.

Non-trivial thick brane realisations with 3-forms

Abstract:We explore the construction of four-dimensional thick branes supported by massless 3-forms in a five-dimensional bulk space. The required residual Poincaré symmetry on the brane is realised as a combination of the bulk symmetries and the internal gauge symmetry of the 3-form. We show the presence of a gradient instability for the perturbations orthogonal to the brane when its profile decays slowly in the asymptotic regions. In particular, we ascertain that the prevailing profiles found in the literature are susceptible to such instabilities. We confirm our results by transitioning to the dual formulation in terms of a shift-symmetric scalar. In this formulation, the residual Poincaré group is trivially realised without internal symmetries, and there is a diagonal translational invariance in the fifth dimension reminiscent of the invariance under translations orthogonal to the brane of the dual 3-form. We demonstrate the extension of our results to the cases of de Sitter and Anti de Sitter branes where the gradient instabilities of asymptotically slowly decaying branes persist. Finally, we briefly comment on the construction of thick branes with massive 3-forms and their 1-form duals.
