Abstract:The last years have seen a revolution in ground-based gamma-ray detectors. We can now detect the spectra of nearby TeV blazars like Mrk 421 and 501 out to approximately 20 TeV, and during the strongest flares, we can now follow fluctuations in these spectra on timescales close to the shortest ones likely in these objects. We point out that this represents a unique opportunity. Using these and future detectors in combination with broadband X-ray satellites like SAX and RXTE, we will be able to simultaneously follow all significant X-ray/gamma-ray variations in a blazar's emission. This will provide the most stringent test yet of the synchrotron-Compton emission model for these objects. In preparation for the data to come, we present sample SSC model calculations using a fully self-consistent, accurate code to illustrate the variability behavior one might see (the range of behavior is wider than many expect) and to show how good timing information can probe physical conditions in the source. If the model works, i.e., if X-ray/TeV variations are consistent with being produced by a common electron distribution, then we show it is possible to robustly estimate the blazar's intrinsic TeV spectrum from its X-ray spectrum. Knowing this spectrum, we can then determine the level of absorption in the observed spectrum. Constraining this absorption, due to gamma-ray pair production on diffuse radiation, provides an important constraint on the infrared extragalactic background intensity. Without the intrinsic spectrum, we show that detecting absorption is very difficult and argue that Mrk 421 and 501, as close as they are, may already be absorbed by a factor 2 at approximately 3 TeV. This should not be ignored when fitting emission models to the spectra of these objects.

X-ray Spectral Variability of TeV Blazars During Rapid Flares

Abstract:The spectral energy distribution (SED) of TeV blazars peaks both at keV and TeV energies. The X-ray emission is generally believed to originate in the synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons (and positrons) in the jet of these sources, while the origin of the gamma-ray emission is still being debated. We report results from a systematic study of X-ray spectral variability of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 during individual flares that last for several days, making use of some of the high-quality data that have recently become available. The X-ray spectra of the two sources fall on the opposite sides of the synchrotron peak of their respective SEDs, so they together may offer additional insights into the physical origin of X-ray variability. We modeled each of the time-resolved X-ray spectra over a single flare by adopting a homogeneous spatial distribution and an instantaneous power-law spectral distribution for the emitting particles. We focused on the variation of four key parameters: particle spectral index, maximum Lorentz factor, energy density, and magnetic field. While there is considerable degeneracy in the fits, we show that, in order to account for the X-ray spectral variability observed in Mrk 421, at least three of the parameters are required to vary in most cases, with the spectral index being one of them. The observations of Mrk 501 support the conclusion, although the quality of the data is not as good. We discuss the implications of the results.

Abstract:(Abridged) We present a detailed analysis of week-long simultaneous observations of the blazar Mrk421 at 2-60 keV X-rays (RXTE) and TeV gamma-rays (Whipple and HEGRA) in 2001. The unprecedented quality of this dataset enables us to establish firmly the existence of the correlation between the TeV and X-ray luminosities, and to start unveiling some of its more detailed characteristics, in particular its energy dependence, and time variability. The source shows strong, highly correlated variations in X-ray and gamma-ray. No evidence of X-ray/gamma-ray interband lag is found on the full week dataset (<3 ks). However, a detailed analysis of the March 19 flare reveals that data are not consistent with the peak of the outburst in the 2-4 keV X-ray and TeV band being simultaneous. We estimate a 2.1+/-0.7 ks TeV lag. The amplitudes of the X-ray and gamma-ray variations are also highly correlated, and the TeV luminosity increases more than linearly w.r.t. the X-ray one. The strong correlation supports the standard model in which a unique electrons population produces the X-rays by synchrotron radiation and the gamma-ray component by inverse Compton scattering. However, for the individual best observed flares the gamma-ray flux scales approximately quadratically w.r.t. the X-ray flux, posing a serious challenge to emission models for TeV blazars. Rather special conditions and/or fine tuning of the temporal evolution of the physical parameters of the emission region are required in order to reproduce the quadratic correlation.

Abstract:We report results from an intensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign on the TeV blazar Mrk 421 over the period of 2003-2004. The source was observed simultaneously at TeV energies with the Whipple 10 m telescope and at X-ray energies with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) during each clear night within the Whipple observing windows. Supporting observations were also frequently carried out at optical and radio wavelengths to provide simultaneous or contemporaneous coverages. The large amount of simultaneous data has allowed us to examine the variability of Mrk 421 in detail, including cross-band correlation and broadband spectral variability, over a wide range of flux. The variabilities are generally correlated between the X-ray and gamma-ray bands, although the correlation appears to be fairly loose. The light curves show the presence of flares with varying amplitudes on a wide range of timescales at both X-ray and TeV energies. Of particular interest is the presence of TeV flares that have no coincident counterparts at longer wavelengths, because the phenomenon seems difficult to understand in the context of the proposed emission models for TeV blazars. We have also found that the TeV flux reached its peak days before the X-ray flux did during a giant flare (or outburst) in 2004 (with the peak flux reaching ~135 mcrab in X-rays, as seen by the RXTE ASM, and ~3 crab in gamma rays). Such a difference in the development of the flare presents a further challenge to both the leptonic and hadronic emission models. Mrk 421 varied much less at optical and radio wavelengths. Surprisingly, the normalized variability amplitude in the optical seems to be comparable to that in the radio, perhaps suggesting the presence of different populations of emitting electrons in the jet. The spectral energy distribution of Mrk 421 is seen to vary with flux, with the two characteristic peaks moving toward higher energies at higher fluxes. We have failed to fit the measured spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model; introducing additional zones greatly improves the fits. We have derived constraints on the physical properties of the X-ray/gamma-ray flaring regions from the observed variability (and SED) of the source. The implications of the results are discussed.

Abstract:Jets in blazars are an excellent forum for studying acceleration at relativistic shocks using the highly-variable emission seen across the electromagnetic spectrum. Our recent work on combining multi-wavelength leptonic emission models with simulated thermal+non-thermal distributions from shock acceleration theory has resulted in new insights into plasma conditions in blazars. This has demonstrated the ability to infer the cyclotron frequency, the plasma density and thus also the Alfven speed, thereby determining the rapidity of particle energization. An important inference was that MHD turbulence levels decline with remoteness from jet shocks. This paper outlines new results from our recent extension of this program to a two-zone, time-evolving construction, modeling together both extended, enhanced emission states from larger radiative regions, and prompt flare events from compact acceleration zones. These are applied to flares in the FSRQ blazar 3C 279 monitored by Fermi-LAT in gamma-rays in late 2013. With impulsive injection episodes from the shock zone, as the acceleration first proceeds and then abates, the radiative simulations obtain a pronounced spectral hardening in the optical and gamma-ray bands as the flare grows, followed by a softening during the decay phase. For 3C 279, while model radio and X-ray synchrotron flares are temporally correlated, there is a lag in both bands relative to GeV gamma rays and optical emission on timescales of a number of hours. This delay is governed by the short cooling time associated with the bright external Compton signal.

Abstract:We investigate the X-ray and $\gamma$-ray flares of Mrk 421 on 2008 June 6-15 using the synchrotron self- Compton(SSC) model with electron acceleration, in which an evident correlation between the X-ray and $\gamma$-ray bands appears, while no significant correlation between the optical and X-ray band is observed. We argue that the emission from Mrk 421 may originate from two different components. One is the steady component from the outer region that is mainly attributed to the optical band, in which the electrons are accelerated by first-order Fermi acceleration mechanism. We use a steady electron spectrum to produce the synchrotron self-Compton emission. The other is the variable component from the inner region, in which the electrons are accelerated by the stochastic acceleration process. We use the time-dependent SSC model to produce the emission from the variable component. We suggest that the flares are due to the hardening of the electron spectrum under the process of the stochastic acceleration, which leads to the hardening of the observed spectrum in the X-ray and $\gamma$-ray bands. Furthermore, we find that the energy densities of electrons and magnetic fields are near equipartition in both jet regions.

X-ray Flares from Markarian 501

Abstract:Motivated by the recent discovery of a hierarchical X-ray flaring phenomenon in Mrk 421, we conducted a systematic search for X-ray flares from Mrk 501, another well-known TeV blazar, by making use of the rich RXTE archival database. We detected flares over a wide range of timescales, from months down to minutes, as in the case of Mrk 421. However, the flares do not seem to occur nearly as frequently in Mrk 501 as in Mrk 421 on any of the timescales. The flaring hierarchy also seems apparent in Mrk 501, suggesting that it might be common among TeV blazars. The results seem to imply a scale-invariant physical origin of the flares (large or small). The X-ray spectrum of the source shows a general trend of hardening toward the peak of long-duration flares, with indication of spectral hysteresis, which is often seen in TeV blazars. However, the data are not of sufficient quality to allow us to draw definitive conclusions about spectral variability associated with more rapid but weaker flares. We critically examine a reported subhour X-ray flare from Mrk 501, in light of intense background-flaring activity at the time of the observation, and concluded that the flare is likely an artifact. On the other hand, we did identify a rapid X-ray flare that appears to be real. It lasted only for about 15 minutes, during which the flux of the source varied by about 30%. Substructures are apparent in its profile, implying variabilities on even shorter timescales. Such rapid variabilities of Mrk 501 place severe constraints on the physical properties of the flaring region in the jet, and the constraints have serious implications for the emission models proposed for TeV blazars.

Abstract:We investigate rapid TeV flaring in markarian 501 in the frame of a time-dependent one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. Inthis model, electrons are accelerated to extra-relativistic energy through the stochastic particle acceleration and evolve with the time, nonthermal photons are produced by both synchrotron and inverse Comtpon scattering off synchrotron photons. Moreover, nonthermal photons during a pre-flare are produced by the relativistic electrons in the steady state and those during a flare are produced by the electrons whose injection rate is changed at some time interval. We apply the model to the rapid flare of Markarian 501 on July 9, 2005 and obtain the multi-wavelength spectra during the pre-flare and during the flare. Our results show that the time-dependent properties of flares can be reproduced by varying the injection rate of electrons and a clear canonical anti-clockwise-loop can be given.

Abstract:Mrk 421 was repeatedly observed with BeppoSAX in 1997 and 1998. The source showed a very rich phenomenology with remarkable spectral variability. This is the second of two papers presenting the results of a thorough temporal and spectral analysis of all the data available to us, focusing in particular on the flare of April 1998, which was simultaneously observed also at TeV energies. The spectral analysis and correlations are presented in this paper, while the data reduction and timing analysis are the content of the companion paper. The spectral evolution during the flare has been followed over few ks intervals, allowing us to detect for the first time the peak of the synchrotron component shifting to higher energies during the rising phase and then receding. This spectral analysis nicely confirms the delay of the flare at the higher energies, which in Paper I we quantified as a hard lag of a few ks. Furthermore, at the highest energies, evidence is found of variations of the inverse Compton component. The spectral and temporal information obtained challenge the simplest models currently adopted for the (synchrotron) emission and, most important, provide clues on the particle acceleration process. A scenario accounting for all the observational constraints is discussed, where electrons are injected at progressively higher energies during the development of the flare and the achromatic decay is ascribed to the source light crossing time exceeding the particle cooling timescales.
Emitting electrons spectra and acceleration processes in the jet of Mrk 421: from low state to giant flare state

Abstract:We investigate the electron energy distributions (EEDs) and the acceleration processes in the jet of Mrk 421 through fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in different active states in the frame of a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. After assuming two possible EEDs formed in different acceleration models: the shock accelerated power-law with exponential cut-off (PLC) EED and the stochastic turbulence accelerated log-parabolic (LP) EED, we fit the observed SEDs of Mrk 421 in both low and giant flare states by using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method which constrains the model parameters in a more efficient way. Our calculating results indicate that (1) the PLC and LP models give comparably good fits for the SED in low state, but the variations of model parameters from low state to flaring can be reasonably explained only in the case of the PLC in low state; and (2) the LP model gives better fits compared to the PLC model for the SED in flare state, and the intra-day/night variability observed at GeV-TeV bands can be accommodated only in the LP model. The giant flare may be attributed to the stochastic turbulence re-acceleration of the shock accelerated electrons in low state. Therefore, we may conclude that shock acceleration is dominant in low state, while stochastic turbulence acceleration is dominant in flare state. Moreover, our result shows that the extrapolated TeV spectra from the best-fit SEDs from optical through GeV with the two EEDs are different. It should be considered in caution when such extrapolated TeV spectra are used to constrain extragalactic background light (EBL) models.

Abstract:Mkn 421 was repeatedly observed with BeppoSAX in 1997-1998. This is the first of two papers where we present the results of a thorough temporal and spectral analysis of all the data available to us, focusing in particular on the flare of April 1998, which was simultaneously observed also at TeV energies. Here we focus on the time analysis, while the spectral analysis and physical interpretation are presented in the companion paper. The detailed study of the flare in different energy bands reveals very important new results: i) hard photons lag the soft ones by 2-3 ks -a behavior opposite to what is normally found in high energy peak BL Lacs X-ray spectra; ii) the flare light curve is symmetric in the softest X-ray band, while it becomes increasingly asymmetric at higher energies, with the decay being progressively slower than the rise; iii) the flux decay of the flare can be intrinsically achromatic if a stationary underlying emission component is present. The temporal and spectral information obtained challenge the simplest models currently adopted for the (synchrotron) emission and most importantly provide clues on the particle acceleration process.

Abstract:As one of the brightest active blazars in both X-ray and very high energy γ-ray bands, Mrk 501, is very useful for physics associated with jets from active galactic nuclei. The ARGO-YBJ experiment has monitored Mrk 501 for γ-rays above 0.3 TeV since 2007 November. The largest flare since 2005 was observed from 2011 October and lasted until about 2012 April. In this paper, a detailed analysis of this event is reported. During the brightest γ-ray flaring episodes from 2011 October 17 to November 22, an excess of the event rate over 6σ is detected by ARGO-YBJ in the direction of Mrk 501, corresponding to an increase of the γ-ray flux above 1 TeV by a factor of 6.6 ± 2.2 from its steady emission. In particular, the γ-ray flux above 8 TeV is detected with a significance better than 4σ. Based on time-dependent synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) processes, the broadband energy spectrum is interpreted as the emission from an electron energy distribution parameterized with a single power-law function with an exponential cutoff at its high-energy end. The average spectral energy distribution for the steady emission is well described by this simple one-zone SSC model. However, the detection of γ-rays above 8 TeV during the flare challenges this model due to the hardness of the spectra. Correlations between X-rays and γ-rays are also investigated.

Abstract:Abstract Blazars, a subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN), are known to be bright γ-ray sources, frequently exhibiting active (flaring) periods. The blazar PKS 2155-304 is a high synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object located at redshift z = 0.116. On 2006 July 28, an extremely remarkable outburst of VHE γ-ray emission from this blazar was reported by the H.E.S.S. experiment, with an average flux more than 10 times the low-state level. The variability timescale of this extraordinary flare was as short as approximately 200 s. In order to guarantee the transparency of the emission region for TeV photons, the fast variability demands an extremely high Doppler factor δD > 50 of the jet within the classical one-zone model, leading to the so-called ‘Doppler factor crisis’. Here we demonstrate that the stochastic dissipation model, which is a multi-blob scenario for blazars, can self-consistently explain the giant TeV flares of PKS 2155-304 and the low-state emission before and after the flares, in terms of both multi-wavelength spectral and variability characteristics. The required Doppler factor in this model can be as low as 20, which is a reasonable and typical value for blazar jets. The obtained model parameters may shed some light on the physical properties of the relativistic jet.

Abstract:We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the TeV γ-ray blazar Mrk 421 performed during 2002 December and 2003 January. These target of opportunity observations were initiated by the detection of X-ray and TeV γ-ray flares with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the 10 m Whipple γ-ray telescope. The campaign included observational coverage in the radio (University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory), optical (Boltwood, La Palma KVA 0.6 m; WIYN 0.9 m), X-ray (RXTE pointed telescopes), and TeV γ-ray (Whipple and HEGRA) bands. At TeV energies, the observations revealed several flares at intermediate flux levels, peaking between 1 and 1.5 times the flux from the Crab Nebula. While the time-averaged spectrum can be fitted with a single power law of photon index Γ = 2.8 from dNγ/dE ∝ E-Γ, we find some evidence for spectral variability. Confirming earlier results, the campaign reveals a rather loose correlation between the X-ray and TeV γ-ray fluxes. In one case, a very strong X-ray flare is not accompanied by a comparable TeV γ-ray flare. Although the source flux was variable in the optical and radio bands, the sparse sampling of the optical and radio light curves does not allow us to study the correlation properties in detail. We present a simple analysis of the data with a synchrotron self-Compton model, emphasizing that models with very high Doppler factors and low magnetic fields can describe the data.

Abstract:ABSTRACT By studying the variability of blazars across the electromagnetic spectrum, it is possible to resolve the underlying processes responsible for rapid flux increases, so-called flares. We report on an extremely bright X-ray flare in the high-peaked BL Lacertae object Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) that occurred simultaneously with enhanced γ-ray activity detected at very high energies by First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope on 2019 June 9. We triggered an observation with XMM–Newton, which observed the source quasi-continuously for 25 h. We find that the source was in the brightest state ever observed using XMM–Newton, reaching a flux of 2.8 × 10−9 $\mathrm{erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$ over an energy range of 0.3–10 keV. We perform a spectral and timing analysis to reveal the mechanisms of particle acceleration and to search for the shortest source-intrinsic time-scales. Mrk 421 exhibits the typical harder-when-brighter behaviour throughout the observation and shows a clock-wise hysteresis pattern, which indicates that the cooling dominates over the acceleration process. While the X-ray emission in different sub-bands is highly correlated, we can exclude large time lags as the computed z-transformed discrete correlation functions are consistent with a zero lag. We find rapid variability on time-scales of 1 ks for the 0.3–10 keV band and down to 300 s in the hard X-ray band (4–10 keV). Taking these time-scales into account, we discuss different models to explain the observed X-ray flare, and find that a plasmoid-dominated magnetic reconnection process is able to describe our observation best.

Modeling multiband SEDs and light curves of BL Lacertae using a time-dependent shock-in-jet model

Abstract:The origin of fast flux variability in blazars is a long-standing problem, with many theoretical models proposed to explain it. In this study, we focus on BL Lacertae to model its spectral energy distribution (SED) and broadband light curves using a diffusive shock acceleration process involving multiple mildly relativistic shocks, coupled with a time-dependent radiation transfer code. BL Lacertae was the target of a comprehensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign in early July 2021. We present a detailed investigation of the source's broadband spectral and light curve features using simultaneous observations at optical-UV frequencies with Swift-UVOT, in X-rays with Swift-XRT and AstroSat-SXT/LAXPC, and in gamma-rays with Fermi-LAT, covering the period from July to August 2021 (MJD 59400 to 59450). A fractional variability analysis shows that the source is most variable in gamma-rays, followed by X-rays, UV, and optical. This allowed us to determine the fastest variability time in gamma-rays to be on the order of a few hours. The AstroSat-SXT and LAXPC light curves indicate X-ray variability on the order of a few kiloseconds. Modeling simultaneously the SEDs of low and high flux states of the source and the multiband light curves provided insights into the particle acceleration mechanisms at play. This is the first instance of a physical model that accurately captures the multi-band temporal variability of BL Lacertae, including the hour-scale fluctuations observed during the flare.

Abstract:The blazar Mrk 421 shows frequent, short flares in the TeV energy regime. Due to the fast nature of such episodes, we often fail to obtain sufficient simultaneous information about flux variations in several energy bands. To overcome this lack of multi-wavelength (MWL) coverage, especially for the pre- and post-flare periods, we have set up a monitoring program with the FACT telescope (TeV energies) and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (X-rays). On 2019 June 9, Mrk 421 showed a TeV outburst reaching a flux level of more than two times the flux of the Crab Nebula at TeV energies. We acquired simultaneous data in the X-rays with additional observations by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL. For the first time, we can study a TeV blazar in outburst taking advantage of highly sensitive X-ray data from XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL combined. Our dataset is complemented by pointed radio observations by Effelsberg at GHz frequencies. We present our first results, including the {\gamma}-ray and X-ray light curves, a timing analysis of the X-ray data obtained with XMM-Newton , as well as the radio spectra before, during and after the flare.

Abstract:Using the cross-spectral method, we confirm the existence of the X-ray hard lags discovered with cross-correlation function technique during a large flare of Mrk 421 observed with BeppoSAX. For the 0.1-2 versus 2-10 keV light curves, both methods suggest sub-hour hard lags. In the time domain, the degree of hard lag, i.e. the amplitude of the 3.2-10 keV photons lagging the lower energy ones, tends to increase with the decreasing energy. In the Fourier frequency domain, by investigating the cross-spectra of the 0.1-2/2-10 keV and the 2-3.2/3.2-10 keV pairs of light curves, the flare also shows hard lags at the lowest frequencies. However, with the present data, it is impossible to constrain the dependence of the lags on frequencies even though the detailed simulations demonstrate that the hard lags at the lowest frequencies probed by the flare are not an artefact of sparse sampling, Poisson and red noise. As a possible interpretation, the implication of the hard lags is discussed in the context of the interplay between the (diffusive) acceleration and synchrotron cooling of relativistic electrons responsible for the observed X-ray emission. The energy-dependent hard lags are in agreement with the expectation of an energy-dependent acceleration time-scale. The inferred magnetic field (Bsimilar to0.11 G) is consistent with the value inferred from the spectral energy distributions of the source. Future investigations with higher quality data that show whether or not the time-lags are energy-/frequency-dependent will provide a new constraint on the current models of the TeV blazars.

Abstract:Very-high-energy gamma-ray flares of TeV blazars are generally accompanied by simultaneous flaring activity in X-rays. The recent observations by the Whipple collaboration of an ``orphan'' TeV flare of 1ES 1959+650 (without simultaneous X-ray flare) is very hard to reconcile with the standard leptonic SSC model which is routinely very successfully employed to explain the SED and spectral variability of TeV blazars. In this paper, an alternative scenario is suggested in which the ``orphan'' TeV flare may originate from relativistic protons, interacting with an external photon field supplied by electron-synchrotron radiation reflected off a dilute reflector. While the external photons will be virtually ``invisible'' to the co-moving ultrarelativistic electrons in the jet due to Klein-Nishina effects, their Doppler boosted energy is high enough to excite the $\Delta$ resonance from relativistic protons with Lorentz factors of ~ 10^3 - 10^4. This model is capable of explaining the ``orphan'' TeV flare of 1ES 1959+650 with plausible parameters, thus constraining the number and characteristic energy of relativistic protons in the jet of this blazar.
