Abstract:We show in a mean-field calculation that phase diagrams remarkably similar to those recently proposed for the cuprates arise in simple microscopic models of interacting electrons near half-filling. The models are extended Hubbard models with nearest neighbor interaction and correlated hopping. The underdoped region of the phase diagram features $d_{{x^2}-{y^2}}$ density-wave (DDW) order. In a certain regime of temperature and doping, DDW order coexists with antiferromagnetic (AF) order. For larger doping, it coexists with $d_{{x^2}-{y^2}}$ superconductivity (DSC). While phase diagrams of this form are robust, they are not inevitable. For other reasonable values of the coupling constants, drastically different phase diagrams are obtained. We comment on implications for the cuprates.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the nature of the "pseudogap" phenomenon observed in copper - based high - temperature superconductors (cuprates). Specifically, the author explores whether the "pseudogap" can be interpreted as a new ordered state - \(d_{x^2 - y^2}\) density - wave (DDW) order, and studies the behavior of this order in the extended Hubbard model and its interaction and coexistence with other known orders (such as antiferromagnetic order AF and \(d_{x^2 - y^2}\) superconducting order DSC).
### Main problems of the paper
1. **The nature of the "pseudogap"**:
- High - temperature superconductors exhibit the "pseudogap" phenomenon in the under - doped region, that is, the density of low - energy states decreases, similar to the formation of an energy gap in the superconducting state. However, unlike the superconducting state, the "pseudogap" does not obviously correspond to the formation of a certain ordered state.
- The author proposes that the "pseudogap" may be a new ordered state - \(d_{x^2 - y^2}\) density - wave (DDW) order.
2. **Model selection and verification**:
- The author selects an extended Hubbard model, which includes nearest - neighbor interactions and correlated hopping, to study how these effects influence the phase diagram.
- Through the mean - field theory, the author calculates the phase diagrams at different dopings and temperatures, especially the existence of DDW order and its coexistence with AF order and DSC order.
3. **Interpretation of experimental results**:
- The author discusses the consistency between experimental results and theoretical predictions, especially the signs of DDW order observed in elastic neutron scattering experiments.
- The author also explores other experimental results, such as the change of superfluid density with doping, to support the hypothesis of DDW order.
### Main conclusions
- **Similarity of phase diagrams**:
- The phase diagram generated by the extended Hubbard model within a certain range of parameters is very similar to the phase diagram of copper - based high - temperature superconductors observed experimentally.
- In the under - doped region, DDW order corresponds to the "pseudogap" phenomenon in the experiment.
- At higher doping levels, DDW order coexists with DSC order.
- **Stability of DDW order**:
- The author finds that within certain parameter ranges, DDW order is stable and can be reasonably described in the mean - field theory.
- However, DDW order is not inevitable, and different parameter selections will lead to completely different phase diagrams.
- **Interaction with other orders**:
- DDW order can coexist with AF order and DSC order, which is manifested as the coexistence regions of multiple ordered states in the phase diagram.
- The author analyzes the interactions between these orders through Landau - Ginzburg theory and finds that there is a competitive relationship between them.
In conclusion, this paper explores the nature of the "pseudogap" phenomenon through the extended Hubbard model and mean - field theory, proposes DDW order as a possible explanation, and analyzes in detail its behavior in the phase diagram and its interaction with other orders.
