Abstract:Hydrogen is the main chemical component of the solar plasma, and H-ionization determines basic properties of the first adiabatic exponent $\Gamma_1$. Hydrogen ionization remarkably differs from the ionization of other chemicals. Due to the large number concentration, H-ionization causes a very deep lowering of $\Gamma_1$, and the lowering profile appears to be strongly asymmetric and extends over almost the entire solar convective zone. The excited states in the hydrogen atom are modelled with the help of a partition function, which accounts the internal degrees of freedom of the composed particle. A temperature-dependent partition function with an asymptotic cut-off tail is deduced from a solution of the quantum mechanical problem of the hydrogen atom in the plasma. We present a numerical simulation of hydrogen ionization, calculated with two expressions for the partition function, Planck-Larkin (PL) and Starostin-Roerich (SR), respectively. The Hydrogen ionization is shifted toward higher temperature in the SR-case compared to the PL-case. Different models for excited states of the hydrogen atom may change $\Gamma_1$ by as much as $10^{-2}$. The behavior of the $\Gamma_1$ profiles for pure hydrogen resembles `twisted ropes' for the two considered models. This significantly affects the helium ionization and the position of the helium hump. This entanglement of H and He effect gives us a chance to study a role of excited states in the solar plasma.

Partially-ionised two-fluid shocks with collisional and radiative ionisation and recombination -- multi-level hydrogen model

Abstract:Explosive phenomena are known to trigger a wealth of shocks in warm plasma environments, including the solar chromosphere and molecular clouds where the medium consists of both ionised and neutral species. Partial ionisation is critical in determining the behaviour of shocks, since the ions and neutrals locally decouple, allowing for substructure to exist within the shock. Accurately modelling partially ionised shocks requires careful treatment of the ionised and neutral species, and their interactions. Here we study a partially-ionised switch-off slow-mode shock using a multi-level hydrogen model with both collisional and radiative ionisation and recombination rates that are implemented into the two-fluid (P\underline{I}P) code, and study physical parameters that are typical of the solar chromosphere. The multi-level hydrogen model differs significantly from MHD solutions due to the macroscopic thermal energy loss during collisional ionisation. In particular, the plasma temperature both post-shock and within the finite-width is significantly cooler that the post-shock MHD temperature. Furthermore, in the mid to lower chromosphere, shocks feature far greater compression then their single-fluid MHD analogues. The decreased temperature and increased compression reveal the importance of non-equilibrium ionised in the thermal evolution of shocks in partially ionised media. Since partially ionised shocks are not accurately described by the Rankine-Hugoniot shock jump conditions, it may be incorrect to use these to infer properties of lower atmospheric shocks.

Time-dependent Photoionization of Gaseous Nebulae: the Pure Hydrogen Case

Abstract:We study the problem of time-dependent photoionization of low density gaseous nebulae subjected to sudden changes in the intensity of ionizing radiation. To this end, we write a computer code that solves the full time-dependent energy balance, ionization balance, and radiation transfer equations in a self-consistent fashion for a simplified pure hydrogen case. It is shown that changes in the ionizing radiation yield ionization/thermal fronts that propagate through the cloud, but the propagation times and response times to such fronts vary widely and non-linearly from the illuminated face of the cloud to the ionization front (IF). Ionization/thermal fronts are often supersonic, and in slabs initially in pressure equilibrium such fronts yield large pressure imbalances that are likely to produce important dynamical effects in the cloud. Further, we studied the case of periodic variations in the ionizing flux. It is found that the physical conditions of the plasma have complex behaviors that differ from any steady-state solutions. Moreover, even the time average ionization and temperature is different from any steady-state case. This time average is characterized by over-ionization and a broader IF with respect to the steady-state solution for a mean value of the radiation flux. Around the time average of physical conditions there is large dispersion in instantaneous conditions, particularly across the IF, which increases with the period of radiation flux variations. Moreover, the variations in physical conditions are asynchronous along the slab due to the combination of non-linear propagation times for thermal/ionization fronts and equilibration times.

The role of partial ionization effects in the chromosphere

Abstract:The energy for the coronal heating must be provided from the convection zone. However, the amount and the method by which this energy is transferred into the corona depend on the properties of the lower atmosphere and the corona itself. We review: (i) how the energy could be built in the lower solar atmosphere, (ii) how this energy is transferred through the solar atmosphere, and (iii) how the energy is finally dissipated in the chromosphere and/or corona. Any mechanism of energy transport has to deal with the various physical processes in the lower atmosphere. We will focus on a physical process that seems to be highly important in the chromosphere and not deeply studied until recently: the ion-neutral interaction effects in the chromosphere. We review the relevance and the role of the partial ionization in the chromosphere and show that this process actually impacts considerably the outer solar atmosphere. We include analysis of our 2.5D radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations with the Bifrost code (Gudiksen et al. 2011 Astron. Astrophys. 531, A154 (doi:10.1051/0004-6361/201116520)) including the partial ionization effects on the chromosphere and corona and thermal conduction along magnetic field lines. The photosphere, chromosphere and transition region are partially ionized and the interaction between ionized particles and neutral particles has important consequences on the magneto-thermodynamics of these layers. The partial ionization effects are treated using generalized Ohm's law, i.e. we consider the Hall term and the ambipolar diffusion (Pedersen dissipation) in the induction equation. The interaction between the different species affects the modelled atmosphere as follows: (i) the ambipolar diffusion dissipates magnetic energy and increases the minimum temperature in the chromosphere and (ii) the upper chromosphere may get heated and expanded over a greater range of heights. These processes reveal appreciable differences between the modelled atmospheres of simulations with and without ion-neutral interaction effects.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of rates of electron impact ionization and two electrons recombination are calculated using Wannier cross section of electron impact ionization of neutral hydrogen atom. Entropy production and power dissipation are derived for the case when the ionization degree deviates from its equilibrium value. This is the special case of the obtained general formula for entropy production accompanying chemical reactions. Damping rate of the sound waves is calculated and the conditions when ionization processes dominate are considered. A quasi-classical approximation for the heating mechanism of solar chromosphere is proposed. Several analogous phenomena for damping rates in liquids and crystals are shortly discussed, for example, deaf sound of a glass of beer or English salt solution. An explicit expression for the second or bulk (or volume) viscosity of hydrogen plasma is calculated from firsts principles. For the first time some second viscosity is calculated from first principles.

Approximations for radiative cooling and heating in the solar chromosphere

Abstract:Context. The radiative energy balance in the solar chromosphere is dominated by strong spectral lines that are formed out of LTE. It is computationally prohibitive to solve the full equations of radiative transfer and statistical equilibrium in 3D time dependent MHD simulations. Aims. To find simple recipes to compute the radiative energy balance in the dominant lines under solar chromospheric conditions. Methods. We use detailed calculations in time-dependent and 2D MHD snapshots to derive empirical formulae for the radiative cooling and heating. Results. The radiative cooling in neutral hydrogen lines and the Lyman continuum, the H and K and intrared triplet lines of singly ionized calcium and the h and k lines of singly ionized magnesium can be written as a product of an optically thin emission (dependent on temperature), an escape probability (dependent on column mass) and an ionization fraction (dependent on temperature). In the cool pockets of the chromosphere the same transitions contribute to the heating of the gas and similar formulae can be derived for these processes. We finally derive a simple recipe for the radiative heating of the chromosphere from incoming coronal radiation. We compare our recipes with the detailed results and comment on the accuracy and applicability of the recipes.

Ionization rates in the heliosheath and in astrosheaths

Abstract:In the heliosphere, especially in the inner heliosheath, mass-, momentum-, and energy loading induced by the ionization of neutral interstellar species plays an important, but for some species, especially Helium, an underestimated role. We discuss the implementation of charge exchange and electron impact processes for interstellar neutral Hydrogen and Helium and their implications for further modeling. Especially, we emphasize the importance of electron impact and a more sophisticated numerical treatment of the charge exchange reactions. Moreover, we discuss the non-resonant charge exchange effects. The rate coefficients are discussed and the influence of the cross-sections in the (M)HD equations for different reactions are revised as well as their representation in the collision integrals. Electron impact is in some regions of the heliosphere, particularly in the heliotail, more effective than charge exchange, and the ionization of neutral interstellar Helium contributes about 40% to the mass- and momentum loading in the inner heliosheath. The charge exchange cross-sections need to be modeled with higher accuracy, especially in view of the latest developments in their description. The ionization of Helium and electron impact ionization of Hydrogen needs to be taken into account for the modeling of the heliosheath and, in general, astrosheaths. Moreover, the charge exchange cross-sections need to be handled in a more sophisticated way, either by developing better analytic approximations or by solving the collision integrals numerically.

Numerical MHD Simulation of the Coupled Evolution of Collisional Plasma and Magnetic Field in the Solar Chromosphere. I. Gradual and Impulsive Energisation

Abstract:The dynamical coupling between the solar chromospheric plasma and magnetic field is investigated by numerically solving a fully self-consistent, two-dimensional initial-value problem for the nonlinear collisional MHD equations including electric resistivity, thermal conduction, and, in some cases, gas-dynamic viscosity. The processes in the contact zone between two horizontal magnetic fields of opposite polarities are considered. The plasma is assumed to be initially motionless and having a temperature of 50,000 K uniform throughout the plasma volume; the characteristic magnetic field corresponds to a plasma $\beta\gtrsim 1$. In a physical-time interval of 17~seconds typically covered by a computational run, the plasma temperature gradually increases by a factor of two to three. Against this background, an impulsive (in 0.1 seconds or less) increase in the current-aligned plasma velocity occurs at the site of the current-layer thinning (sausage-type deformation, or $m=0$ pinch instability). Such a "velocity burst" can be interpreted physically as an event of suprathemal-proton generation. Further development of the sausage instability results in an increase in the kinetic temperature of the protons to high values, even to those observed in flares. The form of our system of MHD equations indicates that such increases are a property of the exact solution of the system at an appropriate choice of the parameters. Magnetic reconnection does not manifest itself in this solution: it would generate flows forbidden by the chosen geometry. Therefore, the pinch-sausage effect can act as an energiser of the upper chromosphere and be an alternative to the magnetic-reconnection process as the producer of flares.

Multifluid modeling of magnetosonic wave propagation in the solar chromosphere -- effects of impact ionization and radiative recombination

Abstract:In order to study chromospheric magnetosonic wave propagation including, for the first time, the effects of ion-neutral interactions in the partially ionized solar chromosphere, we have developed a new multi-fluid computational model, accounting for ionization and recombination reactions in gravitationally stratified magnetized collisional media. The two-fluid model used in our 2D numerical simulations treats neutrals as a separate fluid and considers charged species (electrons and ions) within the resistive MHD approach with Coulomb collisions and anisotropic heat flux determined by Braginskii's transport coefficients. The electromagnetic fields are evolved according to the full Maxwell equations and the solenoidality of the magnetic field is enforced with a hyperbolic divergence cleaning scheme. The initial density and temperature profiles are similar to VAL III chromospheric model in which dynamical, thermal and chemical equilibrium are considered to ensure comparison to existing MHD models and avoid artificial numerical heating. In this initial setup we include simple homogeneous flux tube magnetic field configuration and an external photospheric velocity driver to simulate the propagation of MHD waves in the partially ionized reactive chromosphere. In particular, we investigate the loss of chemical equilibrium and the plasma heating related to the steepening of fast magnetosonic wave fronts in the gravitationally stratified medium.

Ionisation rate and Stark shift of a one-dimensional model of the Hydrogen molecular ion

Abstract:In this paper we study the ionization rate and the Stark shift of a one-dimensional model of the H$_{2}^{+}$ ion. The finding of these two quantities is reduced to the solutions of a complex eigenvalue problem. We solve this problem both numerically and analytically. In the latter case we consider the regime of small external electrostatic fields and small internuclear distances. We find an excellent agreement between the ionization rate computed with the two approaches, even when the approximate result is pushed beyond its expected validity. The ionization rate is very sensitive to small changes of the external electrostatic field, spanning many orders of magnitude for small changes of the intensity of the external field. The dependence of the ionization on the internuclear distance is also studied, as this has a direct connection with experimental methods in molecular physics. It is shown that for large distances the ionization rate saturates, which is a direct consequence of the behavior of the energy eigenvalue with the internuclear distance. The Stark shift is computed and from it we extract the static polarizability of H$_{2}^{+}$ and compare our results with those found by other authors using more sophisticated methods.
Guided Oscillations in Partially Ionised Solar Chromosphere Driven by a Spectrum of Waves

Abstract:Partial ionised solar plasma has received recently more attention as several processes in the solar atmosphere could not be explained by assuming a fully ionised state. In this study, we investigate the numerically temporal evolution of waves driven by a spectrum of waves in a thin magnetic stratified flux tube. The plasma dynamics is studied considering a two-fluid (charged particles and neutrals) framework, for a frequency regime that is comparable with the collisional frequencies between ions and neutral particles. The evolutionary equations for the two species have been derived analytically, and analytical solutions are obtained considering an initial value problem. Our results show that the charged population oscillates in such a way that an observer would sense a wave propagating with the frequency of the driver, and this signal is followed by a decaying wake that oscillates with the cutoff frequency. Thanks to collisions between ions and neutrals, the wave associated with the neutral species is very rapidly decaying.

Abstract:An initial theoretical attempt to explain the observed decrease of the polytropic/adiabatic index γ in the solar corona has been accomplished. The chemical reactions of the ionization–recombination processes in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) of a solar plasma cocktail containing heavy elements are found to cause 1.1 < γ ≤ 5/3 in the quiet solar atmosphere. It is also shown that the quiet solar atmosphere is in LTE, justifying this theoretical study. This result is obtained by numerically solving the Saha equation and subsequently using a newly derived equation for calculation of the polytropic index from thermodynamic partial derivatives of the enthalpy and pressure with respect to density and temperature. In addition, a comparison measured from spectroscopic observations of propagating slow magnetohydrodynamic waves in coronal loops shows that LTE ionization accounts for a very small part of the observed decrease of γ, meaning that the solar plasma in the active region is not in LTE as expected. However, the observed dependency of higher polytropic index at higher temperatures is confirmed by the current theoretical approach. It is concluded that in order to account for the polytropic index decrease in the active regions of the solar corona, it is necessary for kinetic non-LTE ionization calculations to be performed.

Suprathermal Electrons in the Solar Corona: Can Nonlocal Transport Explain Heliospheric Charge States?

Abstract:There have been several ideas proposed to explain how the Sun's corona is heated and how the solar wind is accelerated. Some models assume that open magnetic field lines are heated by Alfven waves driven by photospheric motions and dissipated after undergoing a turbulent cascade. Other models posit that much of the solar wind's mass and energy is injected via magnetic reconnection from closed coronal loops. The latter idea is motivated by observations of reconnecting jets and also by similarities of ion composition between closed loops and the slow wind. Wave/turbulence models have also succeeded in reproducing observed trends in ion composition signatures versus wind speed. However, the absolute values of the charge-state ratios predicted by those models tended to be too low in comparison with observations. This letter refines these predictions by taking better account of weak Coulomb collisions for coronal electrons, whose thermodynamic properties determine the ion charge states in the low corona. A perturbative description of nonlocal electron transport is applied to an existing set of wave/turbulence models. The resulting electron velocity distributions in the low corona exhibit mild suprathermal tails characterized by "kappa" exponents between 10 and 25. These suprathermal electrons are found to be sufficiently energetic to enhance the charge states of oxygen ions, while maintaining the same relative trend with wind speed that was found when the distribution was assumed to be Maxwellian. The updated wave/turbulence models are in excellent agreement with solar wind ion composition measurements.

The Liquid Metallic Hydrogen Model of the Sun and the Solar Atmosphere VI. Helium in the Chromosphere

Abstract:Molecular hydrogen and hydrides have recently been advanced as vital agents in the generation of emission spectra in the chromosphere. This is a result of the role they play in the formation of condensed hydrogen structures (CHS) within the chromosphere (P.M. Robitaille. The Liquid Metallic Hydrogen Model of the Sun and the Solar Atmosphere IV. On the Nature of the Chromosphere. Progr. Phys., 2013, v. 3, 15–21). Next to hydrogen, helium is perhaps the most intriguing component in this region of the Sun. Much like other elements, which combine with hydrogen to produce hydrides, helium can form the well-known helium hydride molecular ion, HeH+, and the excited neutral helium hydride molecule, HeH*. While HeH+ is hypothesized to be a key cosmological molecule, it's possible presence in the Sun, and that of its excited neutral counterpart, has not been considered. Still, these hydrides are likely to play a role in the synthesis of CHS, as the He I and He II emission lines strongly suggest. In this regard, the study of helium emission spectra can provide insight into the condensed nature of the Sun, especially when considering the 10830 A line associated with the 23P-23S triplet state transition. This line is strong in solar prominences and can be seen clearly on the disk. The excessive population of helium triplet states cannot be adequately explained using the gaseous models, since these states should be depopulated by collisional processes. Conversely, when He-based molecules are used to build CHS in a liquid metallic hydrogen model, an ever increasing population of the 23S and 23P states might be expected. The overpopulation of these triplet states leads to the conclusion that these emission lines are unlikely to be produced through random collisional or photon excitation, as required by the gaseous models. This provides a significant hurdle for these models. Thus, the strong 23P-23S lines and the overpopulation of the helium triplet states provides the thirty-second line of evidence that the Sun is comprised of condensed matter.

XUV exposed, non-hydrostatic hydrogen-rich upper atmospheres of terrestrial planets II: Hydrogen coronae and ion escape

Abstract:We study the interactions between the stellar wind plasma flow of a typical M star, such as GJ 436, and hydrogen-rich upper atmospheres of an Earth-like planet and a "super-Earth" with the radius of 2 R_Earth and a mass of 10 M_Earth, located within the habitable zone at ~0.24 AU. We investigate the formation of extended atomic hydrogen coronae under the influences of the stellar XUV flux (soft X-rays and EUV), stellar wind density and velocity, shape of a planetary obstacle (e.g., magnetosphere, ionopause), and the loss of planetary pick-up ions on the evolution of hydrogen-dominated upper atmospheres. Stellar XUV fluxes which are 1, 10, 50 and 100 times higher compared to that of the present-day Sun are considered and the formation of high-energy neutral hydrogen clouds around the planets due to the charge-exchange reaction under various stellar conditions have been modeled. Charge-exchange between stellar wind protons with planetary hydrogen atoms, and photoionization, leads to the production of initially cold ions of planetary origin. We found that the ion production rates for the studied planets can vary over a wide range, from ~1.0x10^{25} s^{-1} to ~5.3x10^{30} s^{-1}, depending on the stellar wind conditions and the assumed XUV exposure of the upper atmosphere. Our findings indicate that most likely the majority of these planetary ions are picked up by the stellar wind and lost from the planet. Finally, we estimate the long-time non-thermal ion pick-up escape for the studied planets and compare them with the thermal escape. According to our estimates, non-thermal escape of picked up ionized hydrogen atoms over a planet's lifetime varies between ~0.4 Earth ocean equivalent amounts of hydrogen (EO_H) to <3 EO_H and usually is several times smaller in comparison to the thermal atmospheric escape rates.
Ion Heating by a Fast Magnetosonic Turbulence in the Solar Corona

Abstract:Observational data at heliocentric distances of tens of solar radii suggest that fast magnetosonic modes make up a considerable fraction of the solar wind fluctuations. Furthermore, this fraction appears to increase closer to the Sun. We carry out three-dimensional kinetic simulations with particle ions and fluid electrons to evaluate the proton and alpha-particle heating produced by the damping of the fast waves in the solar corona. Realistic parameters at 5 solar radii, including the fluctuation amplitude, are used. We show that, due to the cyclotron resonance, the alphas are heated preferentially perpendicularly to the magnetic field and much more strongly than the protons. The presence of the alpha particles alters the energy partition by reducing the heating of the protons. Nevertheless, the proton heating is sufficient to account for the solar wind acceleration.

Extreme heating of minor ions in imbalanced solar-wind turbulence

Abstract:Minor ions in the solar corona are heated to extreme temperatures, far in excess of those of the electrons and protons that comprise the bulk of the plasma. These highly non-thermal distributions make minor ions sensitive probes of the underlying collisionless heating processes, which are crucial to coronal heating and the creation of the solar wind. The recent discovery of the "helicity barrier" offers a mechanism where imbalanced Alfvénic turbulence in low-beta plasmas preferentially heats protons over electrons, generating high-frequency, proton-cyclotron-resonant fluctuations. We use the hybrid-kinetic particle-in-cell code, Pegasus++, to drive imbalanced Alfvénic turbulence in a 3D low-beta plasma with additional passive ion species, He$^{2+}$ and O$^{5+}$. A helicity barrier naturally develops, followed by clear phase-space signatures of oblique ion-cyclotron-wave heating and Landau-resonant heating from the imbalanced Alfvénic fluctuations. The former results in characteristically arced ion velocity distribution functions, whose non-bi-Maxwellian features are shown by linear ALPS calculations to be critical to the heating process. Additional features include a steep transition-range electromagnetic spectrum, the presence of ion-cyclotron waves propagating in the direction of imbalance, significantly enhanced proton-to-electron heating ratios, anisotropic ion temperatures that are significantly more perpendicular with respect to magnetic field, and extreme heating of heavier species in a manner consistent with empirically derived mass scalings informed by measurements. None of these features are realized in an otherwise equivalent simulation of balanced turbulence. If seen simultaneously in the fast solar wind, these signatures of the helicity barrier would testify to the necessity of incorporating turbulence imbalance in a complete theory for the evolution of the solar wind.

Study Of The Heating Mechanism Of Solar Wind Ions In Coronal Holes

Abstract:Observational results(1,2) obtained by UVCS and SUMER on SOHO provide an excellent opportunity to study the heating and acceleration mechanism of solar wind ions in the solar corona. The heating rate per unit mass for neutral hydrogen is derived from the observed height profiles of the microscopic velocity (derived from EUV line widths) and is found to be about 14 (km/s)(2)/s at 2-3 R.. For Oxygen O+5 the rate is about 120 (km/s)(2)/s. Since the observed microscopic velocity includes thermal motions and wave-related fluid motions, these values may be considered as upper-limit estimates. The heating rate of neutral hydrogen may also be representative for the heating rate of solar wind protons. Although it is now widely believed that the observed heating of O+5 provides evidence for cyclotron-resonance wave heating, no consistent common explanation for the heating rates of both Oxygen and Hydrogen has been proposed. We suggest here a two-step model describing systematically both the heating of the protons and Oxygen ions based on the quasi-linear theory(3). First, the heavy ions absorb almost all the energy of the waves and are preferentially accelerated. Then, because of the Doppler shift and dependence of the resonant frequency of the heavy ions upon their drift speed, these heavy ions become resonant with cyclotron waves at higher wave numbers, at which a considerable number of the protons are also resonant with the waves. This resonance is possible because the protons have a finite plasma beta. The shape of the spectrum at the high wave numbers determines finally how much energy is absorbed by each of the species.
The Equation of State of the Intergalactic Medium After Hydrogen Reionization

Abstract:We use an analytic model to study how inhomogeneous hydrogen reionization affects the temperature distribution of the intergalactic medium (IGM). During this process, the residual energy of each ionizing photon is deposited in the IGM as heat, increasing its temperature to 20,000-30,000 K; subsequent expansion of the Universe then cools the gas. Because reionization most likely proceeds from high to low densities, underdense voids are ionized last, have less time to cool, and are (on average) warmer than mean-density gas immediately after reionization is complete (an "inverted" equation of state). From this initial configuration, the low-density gas cools quickly and eventually returns to a more normal equation of state. The rapidly evolving temperature introduces systematic uncertainties in measurements of the ionizing background at z~6. For example, late reionization implies rapid cooling, so that the ionizing background would have to evolve even more rapidly at z ~5-6 than typically claimed. This degeneracy is difficult to disentangle, because the Lyman-alpha forest probes only a narrow range in densities (over which the gas is nearly isothermal). However, higher Lyman-series transitions probe wider density ranges, sampling different effective temperatures, and offer a new way to measure the IGM equation of state that should work where nearly saturated absorption precludes other methods. This will help to separate evolution in temperature from that in the ionizing background. While more detailed study with hydrodynamic simulations is needed, we show that such measurements could potentially distinguish early and late reionization using only a handful of lines of sight.
